The Aftermath of the Merthyr Rising
Casualties
After the attack on Castle Inn on 3rd June 1831, both sides had many casualties. 16 soldiers had been wounder, 6 of whom had been seriously wounded by the rioters. It is unsure how many rioters were killed as their bodied were taken away for burial in secret, but it is thought that somewhere between 20 and 25 had died and likely many, many more had been injured.
However, there was one particular casualty that caught the attention of the authorities, a Private in the Highlanders named Donald Black. Private Black had been stabbed in the leg during the riot outside the Inn. The weapon used was a bayonet that had been attached to a musket. It had likely been forced from one of the soldiers during the push. Private Black was uncertain who had stabbed him. For this action the authorities wanted blood.
Arrests
On 7th June 1831 the authorities began to clamp down and a search was organised for the main ringleaders and agitators of the rising. This was coordinated with a mass return to work, ensuring that the townsfolk could not protect those who had led them to riot. By the end of the day 18 of the leading rioters had been arrested. But Lewis still remained at large. Eventually he was found hiding in the woods near Hirwaun where the rising had all started with the confiscation of his trunk as payment for debts. He, along with the others arrested, was transported to Cardiff in chains for trial.
The authorities needed to show a strong arm in order to suppress any further riots from happening. They needed to show that these events did not come without punishment. A arrest needed to made in specific relation to the stabbing of Private Black. For this, the blame was placed on a young man from Aberafan named Richard Lewis or as he was known, Dic Penderyn.
William Crawshay II
In late June Crawshay published a pamphlet about the Merthyr Rising entitled The Late Riots at Merthyr Tydfil. In this pamphlet he defended his actions and role in the rising. He claimed that if this had been just to do with wages then the rising would have begun earlier. If it had been just about political reform then why did the rioters attack those on their side? Afterall, Crawshay himself was a vigorous supporter of political reform. Furthermore, if it had only been about the Court of Requests why were the rioters not content to stop at its destruction? Itstead this was a complex series of reasons and factors that caused the rising to spark and grow.
Trials and Sentencing
The rising shook the British establishment, still concerned that tha rioters managed to hold the town in their hands for a week. Strong action was needed against the ringleaders in order to deter others from following their lead. The trials began 13 July 1831, with the express policy to charge those accused not with rioting and revolt but with theft. In all 28 men and women were being tried at the Cardiff Assizes for activities revolving around the Merthyr Rising.
Some of the punishments were lighter than others, although still had some risk with them. Some were convicted to a year’s imprisonment with hard labour. For others the punishments were harsh and severe. Many were sentenced to transportation for 14 years. But with no means to return home unless they made their fortune in Australia they would never seen their families or friends again. Transportation itself could be dangerous with many in the early days dying along the way before they even got to serve their sentence. Others could be worked to the bone, expiring before their sentence was finished. But the prospects were not terrible for all. Some were able to make their fortune after their sentence was complete, becoming part of the successful elite in Australia.
For others the prospects were more severe. They were sentenced to death, but with a recommendation that they were transported for life instead. But the harshest punishments were reserved for the main instigator and agitator Lewsyn yr Heliwr and the suspected soldier stabber Dic Penderyn. They were both sentenced to death. Private Donald Black was uncertain about who had stabbed him but still gave evidence that it was Dic Penderyn. Others testified that they had seen Penderyn stab the soldier, namely a hairdresser named James Abbot and a Special Constable named James Drew, also a hairdresser himself.
Many were furious at this, understanding their reasons for rising. Joseph Tregelles Price, a Quaker ironmaster at Neath near to Aberafan where Penderyn was from, petitioned for the two to have their sentences reprieved. 11,000 signatures were added to his campaign. Evidence had arisen that Abbot and Penderyn had a disagreement before the rising. Others even claimed that Penderyn was no where to be found when Private Black was stabbed, stating that they knew who it was.
Lewis had his sentence reduced to transportation for life by Home Secretary Lord Melbourne. This was likely due to the pressure placed upon the establishment to be lenient to people who had been forced over the edge. As someone who was certainly there, helped instigate the rising and lead the people with his speech, he was certain to face the toughest sentence.
But somebody had to pay the price, somebody needed to hang. Despite the pleas for his life, Dic Penderyn was sentenced to death, Lord Melbourne refusing to reduce his sentence. on 13 August 1831, Dic Penderyn was taken from his cell at Cardiff Prison to be hung until dead on the gallows at Cardiff Gaol on St. Mary’s Street, Cardiff. He protested his innocence until the day of his death, his final words before his hanging reported to be “O Arglwydd dyma gamwedd” (”O Lord, this is an injustice). When he was dead his body was taken to buried at home, in Aberafan. He was only 23 years old. His body remains in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Aberafan, Port Talbot. He has since become a martyr in Wales to those with left wing leanings and supporters of Welsh independence.

in 1874, a man named Ianto Parker confessed to the stabbing of Private Donald Black to Reverend Evan Evans. Parker confessed on his deathbed in Pennsylvania. He claimed that he fled to America in fear that the authorities would search him out. James Abbot also claimed that he had lied under oath. Despite this, Dic Penderyn had not been exonerated. in 2000, his decedents launched a legal campaign to see him pardoned. Further petitions were conducted in 2015 and 2016, the Minister  of Policing, Crime and Criminal Justice at the time stating that they needed hard evidence for Penderyn to be pardoned. The petition itself only gained 600 signatures, requiring 10,000 in order for it to go to parliament. To this day, Penderyn has not yet been pardoned for crimes he did not commit.
The Great Reform Act
In 1832, the reform crisis came to an end with the passing of the Great Reform Act. While its changes were limited, Methyr did gain some of what it had been fighting for. The town gained an MP. The ironmaster Guest was elected unopposed to the seat. However, the working classes were left feeling betrayed. In the reform crisis they had allied with the middle class with their shared goal o gain the vote and fair political representation. The changed made by the reform act allowed for the middle classes to gain what they had campaigned for but kept the working class from being able to participate on the political stage. The sense of betrayal felt stirred the ashes of the Methyr Rising and other riots and protests that had occurred across the country, the Chartist Movement growing from where the others had fallen.
Further political action
As just started, other movements grew from the ashes of the Merthyr Rising. Gwyn A. Williams has stated that the Merthyr Rising was where ‘the prehistory of the Welsh working class comes to an end. Its history begins’. It has been considered the beginning of a new tradition of political action for the working people of Wales with a string of further unrest following in its wake. It has inspired and influenced further generations of Welsh protest, its figures becoming figure heads of working class social and political movements such as trade unionism, devolution and independence. It has even been mixed with cultural influenced with the Methyr Rising festival being held every year during the anniversary of the rising since 2013. It is a showcase for Welsh talent and culture including music and art mixed with political discussion. Its mission is stated as to celebrate Welsh and working class culture which promoting resistance against inequalities through the use of political discussion and the arts. TOP 100: Take Me Home Tour H/L Moments 2013
Lisa, Jess and I have been getting super excited for the WWA tour and thought a great way to get even more excited would be to go through every H/L moment from the 2013 tour and put them into a top 10 list.
As you can tell by the title of this post, that did not happen. Because guess what! This is the hardest post I've ever had to make because I couldn't pick 10 or 20 or even 50 "essential" moments from this tour.
THINK ABOUT THAT.
We all pine for the days of yore when the Up All Night tour was going strong, and there were a lot of moments I love from that tour. But it was also a much shorter tour and took place over a shorter period of time. It was a case study in teenage love affair: flirting, sex and hearteyes. The Take Me Home tour was different (obviously lol) in that it was much more subdued (partly for unhappy reasons).
But after going through this, I think I might like this tour better, which seems crazy, but once you go through this list (and Lisa's), you'll see that this tour was all about being settled, domestic and fond in the face of what appeared to be pretty extreme measures to have us believe they weren't even friends anymore.
But once you go through this list, I think you'll agree, that nothing that matters has changed.

Let's do this.
These are in chronological order, because if I had to rank them, I'd stroke out from the pressure. Going by date is a fun way to see that this tour was CONSISTENT. +Traits/Personality+
 - Physical attraction: Scarlett doesn’t much care for how a person views or thinks of her when it comes to physical attraction. She knows she isn’t considered one of the most beautiful women nor that her physique is the best (bust size and rear), but it is quite the pet peev when one downs a woman or man on their physical exteriors in a negative manor. She much more cares for someone else to feel beautiful/handsome, even if it is indeed hard for her to vocalize. Scarlett also isn’t concerned much with exterior physique as compared to the personality of ones self. Of course, it is a nice bonus if she must admit, but not included in the first thought. First impressions are key in this.
 - Adaptable: Any officer/military personnel should have this at all times. Scar has grown quite used to how a situation works and ways to diffuse one.
 - Alert: Despite alcohol limiting this when smashed, alertness is always present. Looking over ones shoulder frequently in case of tails or the slightest out-of-place noise causing a scurry. This can be seen also as paranoia.
 - Calm: Anger can be hidden behind a calm cool and collected exterior. Calm is usually considered in her tone of voice but not always in her actions.
 - Challenging: Challenging authority has always been a big thing for Scar, but that isn’t the only thing considered challenging. It’s very hard to gain her trust, hard to make her outgoing or more extroverted unless drinks are involved.
 - Charming: Of course when liquid courage is involved, Scar is a shameless flirt. Her charm comes from her mannerisms and speech patterns.
 - Curious: She won’t hesitate with her bluntness to ask questions about anything and everything she finds unusual or unique.
 - Flirt: Usually includes pet names of some sort (not too over the top) and subtle movements. This doesn’t include must dirty talk until the bedroom comes into play.
 - Genuine/Good-natured: She attempts to show a smile or crack a joke, small gestures or simple greetings a sign of possible or even encouraged companionship.
 - Honest: Brutally blunt. If a truth must be shared, she will share it in a manor that is in a way uncomfortable or even borderline inconsiderate of those who hear.
 - Intelligent: Despite her quiet demeanor and lack of wordplay, she is quite smart and can hold a decent conversation of intellectual standards.
 - Playful: Either bedroom talk or simply drunk flirting, Scar does have a playful side, though only the right people can bring it out.
 - Self-Reliant: Many years in her life, she has had to be there for her and only her. No one provided a hand and she later in life sees no such need for anyone to do such for her.
 - Witty: Despite communication…lacking…Her speech patterns have a sarcastic or smart-ass reply to them if the time is right or if she’s with the right person. Such replies can be in response to those she dislikes as well.
 - Tense: She does NOT do well in social situations and is quite tense to sudden displays of affection.
+Fun Facts+
 - Foxtrot: Foxtrot was the name of a Irish Setter Scar had adopted before moving to Ireland from Växjö, Sweden. Foxtort, inspired by the letter ‘F’ in the military alphabet, was considered a lacking partner for a hunt by the Swiss, though through careful training and time full of attention, she became one of the best trackers of her doggy time. She still resides with Scar in her London flat.
 - Coffee: Sugar and cream, harvest/autumn time usually has cinnamon or pumpkin spice flavoring.
 - Tea: Any tea will really do but Earl Grey or Oolong are much preferred.
| History |
Born on 13 October, 1986 in Oxford, England, Scarlett Amori Vincent was introduced to the world as the only daughter of Sebastian and Clementine Vincent, residents of Parliament. Complications arose from Clementine and by the morning of 14 October, she was pronounced dead by doctors, complications of giving natural birth for the sixth time finally catching up the the thirty four year old. Deep depression had set in among the family, funeral days later and the child birthed of a now dead woman being seen as a mistake. Mr. Sebastian Vincent returned to work within parliament, close associations with those among the military taking his rank into account of decisions impacting her majesty and her people.
Scarlett Amori, soon known by the name of Salvador was raised much like the boys within her family. Military barking and demands to learn the ways of politics followed by harsh beatings if the superior was disrespected by the younger’s. By the age of thirteen, ‘Salvador’ entered her rebellious age, taking time out to escape among the night after curfew and meet with boys and girls her family would furthermore disapprove of. On 9 February, 1999, at 6:30 am, William Herrick Vincent, was pronounced dead after a head on collision on his way from his dormitory to his first class of the day.  The family mourned, but Scarlett was absent from the funeral despite William being one of the only brothers that didn’t see her as a mistake.
By the age of sixteen in early January,2002 , Scarlett was working a part-time job with threat of being thrown out of the family. She did this without her family knowing until July when she was to enlist in the Royal Marines. After the application was accepted with parent approval, Scarlett was sent off to training and by the end of the year was being listed for departure to the war.  At this point, she was forced to grow up quicker than most teenagers were, taking the position of Under Officer among her commanders.
By her second tour in the year of 2004, Scarlett earned the rank of Second Lieutenant, promoted from Officer Cadet during her first tour. In 2005 she gained the rank of Lieutenant. In her sixth tour, Scarlett was recruited by the British Special Ops (Special Reconnaissance Regiment) to become a commander of a small division/cell consisting of eight people. By 2012, Scarlett rose from the ranks of Captain to Lieutenant-General within the army, remaining in the position of Commander within SRR.
In January of 2013 after her final leave from the British forces and resigned from her former position, Scarlett moved from the Middle East to Ireland, starting her first six months of hunting with her new partner picked up from a mission in Växjö, Sweden, a Irish Setter named Foxtrot. The hunting started smoothly before the transition to Scotland occurred on 7 July, 2013. By 2 February, 2014, Scarlett returned to London in hopes of finding a new and rather more permanent job. Moving to London, she applied for a position of Inspector among Scotland Yard (Metropolitan Police Service) under the head of the Homicide/Suicide unit. She’s been working with them until current, breaks and time off taken for request missions from the British government.

Man Utd: Has strategy changed and is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the driving force?
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returns to Norway with his Manchester United team for the first time, for a friendly match against his home town team Kristiansund in Oslo. With less than two weeks until the Premier League season starts - and only two friendlies remaining - Solskjaer has yet to make any big-name signings, a significant departure from the approach of his predecessors. Also absent have been avoidable headlines and controversies. Instead, the 46-year-old has gone about his work in a quiet, understated way, completely at odds with the tenures of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal. The status of those two men within the game ensured United were box office, even if the actual team were not. So, have United really changed their strategy - and, if so, is Solskjaer at the heart of it? No big names for the sake of it When Zinedine Zidane seemingly sounded the death knell for Gareth Bale's Real Madrid career, it was informative how quickly word came out of United that they would not be in the market for the Welshman. Bale to United stories have been a staple part of every summer transfer window since before he left Tottenham for Real Madrid in 2013. It is not that Solskjaer is against signing big names but they have to fit his preferred way of playing. Angel di Maria, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and, more recently, Alexis Sanchez have all been bought despite, seemingly, their style being at odds with the manager's philosophy. Big money has been spent on others - Memphis Depay, Radamel Falcao, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and current squad member Fred - all of whom lacked either the fitness, ability or application for the task in front of them. Bale's China move called of by Real Madrid Solskjaer wants a squad of younger, motivated players - very much in keeping with how Sir Alex Ferguson managed. As was the case with Mourinho and Van Gaal, he will choose his targets in conjunction with the recruitment department. It will then be up to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and head of corporate development Matt Judge to do the deals. Solskjaer is keen to bring young talent through into his Manchester United squad Mourinho and Woodward ended up at loggerheads this time last year, when the former wanted to sell Anthony Martial and buy a central defender and the latter blocked the Frenchman's sale and then determined there was no attainable target better than the centre-backs United already had. Over the past week, Nicky Butt has also had an upgrade to head of first-team development. The Treble-winning former United midfielder will work closely with Solskjaer to decide which players are capable of moving from the junior ranks to the senior. The former England midfielder will be responsible for steering each one through the transition. Developing and recruiting the right players is one thing, getting rid of those he deems surplus to requirements is quite another. It remains to be seen whether the "baby-faced assassin" can cull stars in the brutal way his former boss did with such regularity, but there is evidence he can use the carrot and stick approach to positive effect. It is understood Jesse Lingard was given a severe dressing down over a controversial summer social media post. Yet, rather than react badly, the England international has responded by putting in a series of outstanding performances in training. Solskjaer has noted how 26-year-old Lingard finishes either top, or close to it, in many of the individual tasks. He has been willing to forgive, therefore, an indiscretion he puts down to the exuberance of youth, confident his harsh words will ensure it won't be repeated. What will Solskjaer's Man Utd look like? The Solskjaer-stikk: The wrestling move named after Ole's dad Over the past five years it has not always been obvious how United intended to play. Either the system changed, or personnel arrived who did not appear to fit a particular pattern. It was not scattergun but at times it did appear that signings, sometimes for big money, were made without sufficient thought being put into how they would fit the overall team shape. United were supposed to be appointing a technical director to address these recruitment flaws, though that is still to happen. Even without a role now in place at many of Europe's elite clubs, Solskjaer has his own clear idea of how he wants his team to play. Four at the back, two deep in midfield, three attacking in front of that and a centre-forward. Crucially, he wants them all to have pace and he wants players who can interchange. New £15m signing Daniel James may be viewed, even by some at Old Trafford, as a bit of a gamble - but he fits Solskjaer's template. And on tour the Wales winger was a significant threat, though his final ball was not always up to scratch. James arrived from Swansea on 12 June - Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka became United's second summer signing just over two weeks later Eight times in four games James was sent flying by opponents not quick enough to stop him, and three of those instances involved Tottenham's Moussa Sissoko. "Pre-season is not about results," said Solskjaer. "It is about finding a style that suits the players. We've made good strides towards becoming the team we want to be." It was informative also to see how Marcus Rashford and Martial interchanged positions. Both were used as the main striker, as well as wide in the line of three in behind, and Solskjaer has been working to make them more of a goal threat. Rashford's highest club tally for a season is 13. Martial's is 17 but that was in his 2015-16 debut campaign. Those figures need to rise. Romelu Lukaku, for all his obvious faults, has scored 27 and 15 in his two seasons with the Old Trafford club. Solskjaer's wrestling past and formative years Tough training at the Waca When United set off on their four-match tour of Australia and Asia on 7 July, there were more questions than answers surrounding Solskjaer and his team. Some of the questions remain. Will Lukaku leave? Will Harry Maguire arrive from Leicester City? What is going to happen with Paul Pogba? Are United going to sign a new midfield player? However, over the 20 days they were away, some aspects of Solskjaer's management became obvious; as well as the formation he prefers, there was his own work ethic and the demands placed on his players, as well as his trust in youth. At the end of last season, when United's encouraging response to a change of manager gave way to a series of disappointing performances that culminated in an away draw at Huddersfield - who had taken four points from their previous 23 Premier League games - and a home defeat by already-relegated Cardiff, Solskjaer knew his squad were simply not fit enough for the front-foot style he wanted to implement. United addressed that problem at the historic Waca cricket ground in Perth, which they used as their training base during an 11-day stay in Western Australia. Training sessions have included extra high-intensity sessions this summer Solskjaer scheduled 14 training sessions over 10 days. All but three were closed to the media but it was not unusual to see the famous floodlights shining across the eastern part of the city as United's players were put through their paces. Virtually every player took part in every session. The one notable exception was Lukaku, who did not play a single minute in United's four tour games because of injury. The sessions themselves could change and match days were lighter, as would be the case at virtually every club. Interestingly though, high-intensity work rose by 50% on the previous summer. During the two games in Australia, against Perth Glory and Leeds United, total distance covered rose by 10%, although, in the heat and humidity of Singapore and Shanghai that fell slightly in matches against Inter Milan and Tottenham. Although most certainly not a return to the old days of going on long runs to build up endurance, Solskjaer does place value on running and expects an element of this in most aspects of training, even during tactical drills. There were more gym sessions and more preventative work on the hamstring and groin areas, in addition to a greater amount of core strengthening work. This might be viewed as routine stuff. But Solskjaer felt he had to address the fitness of his squad as a matter of urgency. In his view, Mourinho had built it to counter attack, not to dominate and press as sides such as Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham do, and which he feels United's tradition demands. By its nature, this requires greater fitness, allied, in theory, to better technical ability. It is no surprise City are one of the Premier League's most hard-working sides, in addition to the most skilful. "We've been working on intensity and pressing," said Solskjaer. "We've got players who like to be on the front foot and we want that to continue." The transfers that could happen by deadline day Watch: Man Utd youngsters ease past Rangers The peace project The one other aspect of this Manchester United pre-season that has fundamentally changed from the last is that club officials no longer need to be concerned about what the manager is going to say to the media. It may not be much use for the journalists who travelled to cover their trip but Solskjaer does not do public confrontation. The Norwegian is very much a disciple of Tottenham counterpart Mauricio Pochettino who, after the two sides had played in Shanghai last week, told the press there was no point asking him about potential signings, or even those he might sell, because it was a club matter and any information would be released on the official website. Neither will Solskjaer publicly criticise Woodward or even United's decision to organise a long overseas tour - in truth no manager likes them - because he views it as counter-productive. None of this guarantees United will win matches, which is, in the end, how Solskjaer will be judged. And, with just over a week left before the English transfer window closes, his squad is still not the one he wants. Lukaku seems certain to leave. A new central defender - specifically Maguire - is the top target but there are alternatives, and one will surely come in. Confidence has been expressed often that Pogba will remain at the club but if he did leave for Real Madrid or Juventus, the Frenchman would need replacing. Either way, further strengthening in midfield is possible. Some senior squad men may go as Solskjaer intends to use younger players, such as striker Mason Greenwood, in the Europa League rather than pack his team with experienced ones who cannot get a game in the Premier League. Whatever the eventual make-up of the squad, the Norwegian will have the final say: "There won't be any players here I don't want." Of course, there remains a large degree of uncertainty over United and Solskjaer given how last season finished. Given the reset United appear to have undergone, it will also be interesting to discover what targets Woodward - and by extension the Glazer family - will judge Solskjaer by. In every season the club has failed to qualify for the following season's Champions League, the manager who started it has lost their job at some point. If they miss out again this term, penalty clauses will cost them sponsorship money from Adidas. Yet, unlike with Solskjaer's three predecessors, Woodward is acutely aware that if things go wrong again, it will not affect the Norwegian's status amongst the club's fans. If anything, it will shine a light even more sharply on how he is running the Old Trafford outfit. There is no clear road ahead. It was suggested in a private conversation in Australia that if United started the season without further reinforcements, they would need good fortune at the start of the campaign in order to avoid major difficulties. As yet, and not for a lack of trying, additions are yet to be made. However, 12 months after they approached a new campaign with the manager in conflict with the club, Old Trafford officials can at least be assured that this time around there is a unity of purpose between the man in charge of the team and the one in charge of the purse strings. Best and not so best of prince Philip
The Montreal Gazette printed this today to 'honour' Phil in his retirement. It's a whole bunch of quotes from him throughout the years. Not meant as an opinion, just as some weird info 1. "British women can’t cook” (in Britain in 1966). 2. “What do you gargle with, pebbles?” (speaking to singer Tom Jones after the 1969 Royal Variety Performance). 3. “I declare this thing open, whatever it is.” (on a visit to Canada in 1969) 4. “Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed.” (during the 1981 recession) 5. “If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it.” (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting). 6. “It looks like a tart’s bedroom.” (on seeing plans for the Duke and Duchess of York’s house at Sunninghill Park in 1988) 7. “Yak, yak, yak; come on get a move on.” (shouted from the deck of Britannia in Belize in 1994 to the Queen who was chatting to her hosts on the quayside) 8. “You are a woman, aren’t you?”(In Kenya, in 1984, after accepting a small gift from a local woman) 9. “If the man had succeeded in abducting Anne, she would have given him a hell of a time while in captivity.” (On a gunman who tried to kidnap the Princess Royal in 1974) 10. “We didn’t have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, asking ‘Are you all right? Are you sure you don’t have a ghastly problem?’ You just got on with it.” (about the Second World War commenting on modern stress counselling for servicemen in 1995) 11. “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?” (to a driving instructor in Oban, Scotland, during a 1995 walkabout) 12. “If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?” (in 1996, amid calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shooting) 13. “Bloody silly fool!” (in 1997, referring to a Cambridge University car park attendant who did not recognize him) 14. “It looks as if it was put in by an Indian.” (pointing at an old-fashioned fusebox in a factory near Edinburgh in 1999) 15. “Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf.” (to young deaf people in Cardiff, in 1999, referring to a school’s steel band) 16. “They must be out of their minds.” (in the Solomon Islands, in 1982, when he was told that the annual population growth was 5 per cent) 17. “If you stay here much longer, you’ll all be slitty-eyed.” (to British students in China, during the 1986 state visit) 18. “Your country is one of the most notorious centres of trading in endangered species in the world.” (in Thailand, in 1991, after accepting a conservation award) 19. “Oh no, I might catch some ghastly disease.” (in Australia, in 1992, when asked to stroke a Koala bear) 20. “You can’t have been here that long – you haven’t got a pot belly.” (to a Briton in Budapest, Hungary, in 1993) 21. “Aren’t most of you descended from pirates?” (to a wealthy islander in the Cayman Islands in 1994) 22. “You managed not to get eaten, then?” (suggesting to a student in 1998 who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea that tribes there were still cannibals) 23. In Germany, in 1997, he welcomed German Chancellor Helmut Kohl at a trade fair as “Reichskanzler” — the last German leader who used the title was Adolf Hitler. 24. “You’re too fat to be an astronaut.” (to 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Philip he wanted to go into space. Most Runs in ODI Cricket by Indian Players
Most Runs in ODI: This decade has been a riveting one for Indian cricket, especially in the ODI format. It started with batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar becoming the first man to score a double hundred in ODI cricket, when he smashed an ethereal 200* off just 147 balls against South Africa.
Then India won the 2011 World Cup, with MS Dhoni playing a captain's knock in the summit clash and leading from the front. An entire country of a billion-plus erupted in unbridled joy.
India tasted more success after that, winning the 2013 Champions Trophy in England too. But then the two subsequent World Cups ended in disappointment, with India getting knocked out in the semi-finals of both the 2015 and 2019 editions.
This decade has also seen the retirement of many legends of Indian cricket from the ODI format, including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh.
But the greatest story of the decade has been the emergence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as batting powerhouses. The two men have taken the cricketing world by storm, smashing bowling attacks across the world with disdain.
In this article, let us look at 5 Indian batsmen with the most runs in ODI in this decade.
#5 Suresh Raina
Tumblr media
Most Runs in ODI: Suresh Raina has played 144 matches for India in this decade and scored 3718 runs at an average of 35.40, including 3 hundreds and 23 fifties. Raina’s first hundred of the decade came in the year 2010 when he scored 106 against Sri Lanka at Dhaka. However, the classy innings went in vain as Sri Lanka romped home by 4 wickets.
His second hundred of the decade came in Cardiff in the year 2014. Raina’s whirlwind 100, scored off just 75 balls, enabled India to thrash the hosts by 133 runs.
His final century of the decade came during the 2015 World Cup, when he scored 110* to help India beat Zimbabwe by 6 wickets.
Raina last played an ODI for India on 17 July 2018.
#4 Shikhar Dhawan
Tumblr media
Most Runs in ODI: Shikhar Dhawan has formed a formidable partnership alongside Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. The dynamic left-hander has played 133 matches for India this decade and scored 5518 runs at an average of 44.50. He has also registered 17 hundreds and 27 fifties this decade.
Dhawan scored two magnificent hundreds in the 2013 Champions Trophy, against South Africa and the West Indies, and played a pivotal role in India clinching the title. He also slammed a match-winning 137 against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.
The left-hander conjured a stunning 117 against Australia in the 2019 World Cup, but his stint in England was cut short due to injury.
Dhawan's last ODI match was against the West Indies in August 2019, where he scored a run-a-ball 36.
#3 MS Dhoni
Tumblr media
Most Runs in ODI: The legendary MS Dhoni has featured in 196 matches for India in this decade and scored 5640 runs at an excellent average of 50.35. Dhoni has also notched up four hundreds and 39 fifties during this decade.
The most important knock played by Dhoni in this decade was the magical 91* he conjured in the final of the 2011 World Cup. Coming in to bat at the fall of Kohli’s wicket, Dhoni scored a whirlwind 91*, led from the front and enabled India to lift the trophy.
Dhoni’s other memorable knocks this decade include a magnificent 113* against Pakistan in a losing cause. Coming in to bat with India tottering at 27/5, Dhoni’s hundred propelled the side to a total of 227.
His final century of this decade came in the year 2017 against England. Dhoni scored 134 and took India to a huge total of 381 runs, enabling the hosts to edge past England by 15 runs.
His last ODI this decade was on 10 July 2019, in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup. Even though he scored a half-century, India went down to New Zealand by 18 runs.
#2 Rohit Sharma
Tumblr media
Most Runs in ODI: One of the biggest success stories of this decade has been the emergence of Rohit Sharma as a match-winner for India. ‘The Hitman’ has played 177 matches for India in this decade and scored a staggering 7991 runs, including 27 hundreds and 38 fifties.
Rohit has smashed as many as three double hundreds in this decade. His 264 against Sri Lanka in the year 2014 is the highest individual score of all time in ODI cricket. He has also crossed the 150-run mark 7 times in this decade.
Rohit almost literally owned the 2019 World Cup. The right-handed batsman became the first man in history to score five hundreds in a single edition of the multi-nation event, and ended the tournament with a staggering tally of 648 runs.
Rohit’s last ODI match was against the West Indies in August 2019, where he was run out for 10 runs.
#1 Virat Kohli
Tumblr media
Most Runs in ODI: Virat Kohli has emerged as the monarch of all that he has surveyed this decade. The batting maestro has dismantled bowling attacks across the world with stunning regularity, and is already considered by many as one of the greatest batsmen of all time.
The numbers generated by Kohli this decade send the mind into a tizzy. In the 224 matches that the batting maestro has played, he has scored 11036 runs, including a whopping 42 hundreds and 51 fifties. That means he has crossed the 50-run mark 93 times in this decade alone. He is the only Indian Batsman to place his name in the list of most runs in ODI 2018.
Kohli has also broken a plethora of records in this period, including becoming the fastest to 10000 runs in ODIs, notching up the highest number of centuries in chases and scoring the most runs by an Indian batsman in a bilateral ODI series.
Kohli still has several years ahead of him, and if he can continue in the same vein he will likely go past most of Sachin Tendulkar’s big ticket records.

BOXINGEGO FIRST LOOK: ANTHONY JOSHUA VS ALEXANDER POVETKIN TALE OF THE TAPE AND STATISTICS. NETWORK: SKYSPORTS/DAZN DATE: Saturday, September 22, 2018 TIME: WEIGHT CLASS: HEAVYWEIGHT PRESENTED BY: MATCHROOM BOXING/ DAZN UNDERCARD: World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua OBE has signed a new promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing. The new deal will see the undefeated Heavyweight king fight on Sky Sports Box Office for at least another three years, starting with his unification blockbuster with Russian powerhouse Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium on September 22. The 28-year-old sensation produced the performance of a lifetime to claim the WBA title against modern legend Wladimir Klitschko in an unforgettable battle in front of a post-w*r record crowd on 90,000 at England’s national stadium in April 2017. We have created history together and we are dedicated to keeping the UK scene in high demand for all boxers and boxing fans, but for me personally, the journey is nowhere near finished yet.” Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Managing Director, said: “I am delighted to extend our promotional agreement with Anthony and also extend his relationship with Sky Sports. “Anthony is a huge part of the Matchroom family and we have been with him from the debut to unifying the World Heavyweight titles. Since AJ turned professional with Matchroom on Sky five years ago, we have been there every step of the way.
