Honor Human Rights Day By Protecting The Rohingya
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/honor-human-rights-day-by-protecting-the-rohingya/
Honor Human Rights Day By Protecting The Rohingya
The coronavirus pandemic has pushed the Rohingya refugees into an even more vulnerable situation. … [] The Rohingya community faces the challenge of living in overcrowded and flimsy shelters with up to ten or more people in one room. (Photo by Kazi Salahuddin Razu/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
Seventy-two years ago, today, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Just three years after the end of World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt led the effort to produce this document, which broke new ground in two ways. First, it universalized human rights, meaning that it affirmed that everyone is born with core rights. Rights are not bestowed by governments. Second, its internationalized rights, adding these issues to the global diplomatic agenda and encouraging governments to act collectively wherever gross abuses are occurring. Roosevelt called the Universal Declaration a “Magna Carta for all mankind.” But she warned that implementing these rights globally would be daunting, especially in distant places, beyond public attention and international scrutiny.
Perhaps nowhere on earth has this gap between theory and practice been more painful in recent years than in the mistreatment of the Rohingya, an ethnic and Muslim minority in Myanmar. Beginning decades ago, the government of Myanmar, formerly Burma, began targeting these people. More recently, its weaponized Facebook to spread disinformation about the Rohingya in Rakhine State where most were living.
In 2016 and 2017, in response to ragtag Rohingya militants, the Myanmar military and their proxies began attacking Rohingya civilians, raping women, and burning down thousands of homes. In 2018, a United Nations human rights report classified the orchestrated campaign of violence a genocide. Desperate to escape these attacks, more than 700,000 Rohingya fled to relative safety in neighboring Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government allowed them to enter, for which it deserves great credit, but then packed them into massive and unsustainable refugee camps, for which it does not.
I visited those refugee camps two years ago as part of a delegation organized by Robert Kennedy Human Rights, an organization on whose board I serve. Located near the town of Cox’s Bazar, with an estimated one million refugees, the camps are cumulatively the largest in the world. Built on a series of muddy hillsides, this teeming sea of humanity braces for safety when monsoon rains flood the camp, as they do each year, leaving thousands of people at risk, and damaging scores of tent-like encampments.
Life in these camps also is taking a crushing emotional and psychological toll. This is extensively documented in a new report from Fortify Rights, a leading human rights group in the region. Based on a two-year field study, it reveals that “88.7 percent of Rohingya refugees experienced symptoms of depression, 84 percent experienced symptoms of emotional distress, and 61.2 percent experienced symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.”
However tenuous things are in Cox’s Bazar, life for tens of thousands of these refugees is about to take a turn for the worse. Late last week, the Government of Bangladesh began a long planned forced resettlement of up to 100,000 Rohingya refugees to a remote island called Bhasan Char. Located in the Bay of Bengal, 20 miles off the coast, it is a three-hour boat ride away from the mainland. Bhasan Char is little more than a giant sandbar, susceptible to frequent and often severe flooding. In the last several years, the government has built prison-like housing for the refugees and prohibited journalists or human rights organizations from visiting the island. The Guardian obtained video footage of the island, which revealed that “families will be housed in concrete breeze-block rooms, which measure two meters by two and a half meters and have small barred windows. There is one bathroom per block, with each block made up of around 25 housing units.” Serious questions also have been raised about access to health care on the island, given its distance from the mainland.
In characteristically careful language last week, the UN Refugee Agency challenged the transfer, urging that “any relocations to Bhasan Char should be preceded by comprehensive technical protection assessments.” This study would review the safety, feasibility and sustainability of this location and access to assistance and services from the mainland. The UN has made clear that despite its repeated offers to undertake this type of assessment, the Bangladeshi government has refused to let it do so.
The government has assured the United Nations and others that only those who wish to be transferred will be moved to Bhasan Char. Already it is clear that this is not the case. Fortify Rights interviewed several families who were designated for transfer against their will. One family was told by a camp leader “you have to go to the island.” They refused and told Fortify Rights “we are now hiding.”
Three things now need to happen. First, donor governments, including the United States, must weigh in strongly and collectively urging the government to halt these transfers until the UN Refugee Agency is able to conduct its comprehensive review. The message needs to be clear: If the government does not comply with this very reasonable request, future aid may be imperiled.
Second, the UN and key foreign governments should redouble their efforts to assist the government of Bangladesh and donate substantial funds to support alternative relocation sites within the country, sites that are more sustainable and secure.
Finally, while peaceful repatriation to Myanmar is the best long-term solution, it will not happen soon. That’s because the same military and security forces that committed the wholesale attacks against the Rohingya are still in place. Instead, Western states should develop a coordinated offer to resettle a meaningful number of Rohingya refugees in their countries, relieving some of the burden on an already financially strapped Bangladesh. While in the past, the government of Bangladesh has consistently refused this type of third-country resettlement, this is the time for the United States and other states to pursue it.
When the Universal Declaration was adopted, Eleanor Roosevelt posed a simple question: “Where do human rights begin?”. She suggested close to home, in “the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.” As we commemorate the Universal Declaration today in places close to our own homes, the Rohingya refugees also need to be the focal point of our attention and collective action.

Yola to Perform at American Music Awards 2022!
Tumblr media
Yola continues her meteoric rise with the confirmation of her performance at the ‘2022 American Music Awards,’ which  will air live from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu. Yola will be the SONG OF THE SOUL featured performer, which spotlights an emerging, mission-driven artist that has inspired change and invoked social justice through their lyrics. To celebrate the honor, she will share an electrifying rendition of her song, “Break The Bough.”      Written in 2013 following her mother’s funeral, it is a homage to her mother, sharing an imagination of her afterlife. Her poetic lyrics are a wish for her late mother to find a joy she couldn’t find on earth, and an anthem for anyone dealing with complicated grief. With a genre bending mix of R&B, soul and classic pop, the performance is set to be one of the most epic of the evening.
Commenting on this landmark moment Yola stated, “I have long dreamed of performing at the American Music Awards, and honored to be included during the “SONG OF THE SOUL” moment. ‘Break The Bough’ creates a loving false construct of what I hope my mother experienced in her afterlife. A mix of all the things she held dear and brought her happiness during her life. Specifically, her pre-windrush Barbados childhood, disco and Sci-fi.” Yola added, “I hope the song brings a little peace and joy to anyone who has lost someone close to them regardless of how challenging the relationship may have been.”
The song featured on her pivotal sophomore album, “Stand For Myself,” which was twice GRAMMY nominated, making her a six-time GRAMMY nominee. “Stand For Myself” drew widespread critical acclaim.
The Black British genre fluid superstar this year made her acting debut when she portrayed Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama “Elvis,” who is played by Austin Butler, alongside Tom Hanks, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Alton Mason. Her role received widespread praise with support from New York Magazine, Rolling Stone and Harper’s Bazaar.
Yola has since continued her meteoric rise. From joining The Recording Academy®'s Black Music Collective (BMC) Leadership Council alongside H.E.R. and Mickey Guyton to making her debut at Coachella, Yola defines her path and dashes expectation in her wake. Yola also recently appeared on a special CBS Saturday session at D.C’s historic Lincoln Theater. Watch her performance of “Stand For Myself” here.
