Discussing THE DEVILS (’71) with Kevin Flanagan by Kimberly Lindbergs
Kevin M. Flanagan received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015 in English/Film studies (his dissertation: The British War Film, 1939-1980: Culture, History, and, Genre). A book based on this project is under contract with Palgrave (part of the Britain and the World series). Flanagan is also the editor of 2009’s Ken Russell: Re-Viewing England's Last Mannerist and he contributed essays and an audio commentary to the critically acclaimed BFI Blu-ray/DVD boxed set Ken Russell: The Great Composers (2016). He is currently editing Edgar Wright: Interviews for the University Press of Mississippi's longstanding Conversations with Filmmakers series of books.
Tumblr media
FIlmStruck: Can you tell readers a little about yourself and how you became interested in Ken Russell's work?
Kevin Flanagan: I'm very much of the video store generation, and my first job and academic interests somehow combined to lead me to Ken Russell's work. When I was 15 or so (this would be around 1998, give or take a year), I remember flipping channels and landing on Bravo's "Five Star Cinema" film, a designation they gave to movies whose rights they had purchased. Other films in this strand that I can remember from the time were THE MEANING OF LIFE (’83) and PATTON (‘70). Anyway, in this particular film, there was an extraordinary sequence that'd I'd stumbled into: a man sitting on a train, with a hand on his head, crouched over in repose, while shadows undulated across his face. I continued watching the film. I gathered it was some kind of artist biography, the story of a composer, but I didn't know his music and was overwhelmed by the images, to the point where I could not really retain the plot. Sadly, our regional TV listings guide did not mention the name of the film, so I was not able to go back and watch the whole thing until years later.
Soon after, I got a job at a video store (Hollywood Video) and began working my way through the back catalog. At the time, I was following recommendations from books like John Stanley's Creature Features or various Leonard Maltin guides. I remember reading about (funnily enough) THE DEVILS (not knowing who Ken Russell was) and renting it, only to be blown away. I had no formal film studies training, nor any critical experience beyond amateur reviews, but I recall thinking that the "look" of the film had a lot in common with the mystery film that I'd been searching for. Certain themes were the same—genius constrained by society, persecution over religious belief—and some actors even seemed familiar (particularly Georgina Hale). I decided to watch as much Russell as I could, and within weeks I'd purchased a VHS of MAHLER (’74) off eBay and realized that at last, I'd found the film that had been haunting me for close to two years! I was soon off to college, where I proceeded to take as many film courses as possible, as none had been available to me in high school. I found my way to cinephilia, film studies, criticism and peripheral things like an interest in serious music all through the lens of Ken Russell!
Tumblr media
FS: Seeing a Ken Russell film for the first time can truly be a transformative experience and it sounds like his work really made an impact on you. You mentioned that your interest in Russell also led to your interest in music, and I know that classical music is often an essential element of the director’s work. How important is music in THE DEVILS and was Russell inspired by any particular composers while he was making the film?
KF: Peter Maxwell Davies (who composed the music for THE DEVILS) had a close relationship to Russell during this time. Russell produced two Davies records, featuring his Fires of London ensemble, that were released in the UK by the Unicorn label: Vesalii Icones and Eight Songs for a Mad King. He is a composer of avant-garde "serious music" that might now be called "classical". Russell was by now notorious—and beloved, in some circles—for his films about musicians. His most recent biopics of composers were on Richard Strauss (DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS [‘70], his last film for the BBC's Omnibus arts strand) and Tchaikovsky (THE MUSIC LOVERS [‘70], a major theatrical film for United Artists), so there is something of their bombast that can be traced to THE DEVILS. But Russell's commission of Davies to do music for THE DEVILS is comparable to his use of Derek Jarman's sets: an unmistakable modernity of detail and dressing, despite enough historically-appropriate elements that do not feel too anachronistic. The music that Davies delivered for the film is angular and angry in a way that is unmistakably contemporary. At times it feels like a Sun Ra improvisation! But the instrumentation is generally period appropriate. So much about Russell's film of THE DEVILS, just like Aldous Huxley's book, walks a fine line between a clear-eyed vision of the past and the inevitable signposting of the present.
Tumblr media
FS: Russell wrote the screenplay for THE DEVILS but as you pointed out, it was based on Aldous Huxley’s non-fiction novel The Devil’s of Loudun. Russell must have found common ground with Huxley since they were both radical thinkers who bucked convention. Both men also grappled with censors who wanted to repress their work. What are some of the differences and similarities between Huxley’s original novel and Russell’s film?
KF: Huxley's book is a weird one. It is based on historical issues and people, but it isn't a conventional work of history. It might be thought of as a book of "ideas", in that it has long divergences away from its central narrative and into psychology, philosophy, ecclesiastical doctrine and allusions to the 1940s and 1950s (critics have noted that the book is Huxley's response to HUAC. The author had worked in Hollywood and witnessed what institutional paranoia did to many of his peers). Russell's film is full of ideas, too, but many of them are communicated visually or sub-textually, or through the gestures and camerawork. For example, scholar Christophe van Eeecke has described the film as primarily being a political allegory, and key sequences like the mummer's play that accompanies a character’s execution show the film's capacity to analyze, render grotesque and represent the world in miniature, as an echo to the viewer on its contemporary concerns.
Tumblr media
FS: THE DEVILS was heavily edited when it was released and as far as I know, Warner Bros. has never made a complete and uncut edition of the film available to the public. Why do you think THE DEVILS is still being suppressed and do you think we’ll ever get to see a fully restored version of the film?
KF: Film critic Mark Kermode famously tracked down the extant footage of the film's most famous excised bit, the "Rape of Christ" sequence, and you can view it in his documentary HELL ON EARTH (2004). The BFI have released the film in its longest, officially available U.K. form, and this includes material not in the U.S. theatrical release. I honestly don't know why the film has not been restored to its fullest, since it is a notorious work and I'd imagine would certainly do well if marketed to collectors.
Tumblr media
FS: Despite being difficult to see for many years, THE DEVILS has many admirers. It truly is a cult classic as well as an incredible artistic achievement. Why do you think Russell’s film generates such strong reactions and still resonates with so many viewers?
KF: As you say just now, part of the appeal in the pre-streaming era was that the film was hard to see, so tracking it down made it something of a prized object. For its detractors, the film's mix of sadism, religion and sexuality makes it dangerous. For its fans, the exposure of political hypocrisy, the examination of power and the memorable visualization of hysteria makes it essential. In terms of genre, it is an adaptation, a sort of biopic, a nunsploitation movie and a historical film with comedic elements, so it has that unique "cult" mix that characterizes a ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (’75) or CASABLANCA (’42). One of the best things you can say about it is that it is timely: it was very much of its moment in the early 1970s, but it also spoke to its historical setting and it is still relevant today.

Kimberly Lindbergs on Picnic At Hanging Rock
Kimberly Lindbergs on Picnic At Hanging Rock
Friend of the Gutter Kimberly Lindbergs writes about Picnic at Hanging Rock for Streamline. “In Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), viewers are reminded again and again of the “venomous snakes and poison ants” that populate the Australian outback. Despite these repeated warnings, the reptiles and insects we see are never an actual threat and cause no harm besides pilfering some leftovers…

News Roundup
This week federal prosecutors announced that they have charged the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Robin Hayes, and a political donor who owns an insurance company, Greg Lindberg, with attempting to bribe State Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.  Reports say that Lindberg, along with two associates who also have been charged, met with Causey repeatedly to discuss exchanging campaign donations for favorable treatment with respect to a financial examination that was being conducted on one of Lindberg’s businesses.  Hayes allegedly also attempted to persuade Causey on behalf of Lindberg.  Causey reported the scheme and worked with federal authorities during the investigation; he said this week that the case was complex and that more indictments could be forthcoming.  Keep reading for more news.
Memorial Vandalized.  As the New York Times reports, the Unsung Founders Memorial on UNC campus, dedicated to slaves and African American workers who helped build the university, was vandalized over the weekend with urine and racist language.  Two people have been charged in the incident, one reportedly was affiliated with Heirs to the Confederacy, a group that had supported the Silent Sam statue torn down by protesters last year.
ICE Cooperation.  As the News Roundup has noted, several sheriffs in North Carolina have reduced their cooperation with Federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, with some refusing to honor detainer requests and others ending jail use contracts.  On Wednesday, the state House passed a bill that would require sheriffs to cooperate with ICE detainer requests.  A report from the News & Observer says that the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association does not support the proposed legislation.
Former Judge Charged.  WSOC TV reports that former superior court judge Dan Green recently was arrested in Asheville and charged with sex crimes against a child.  Last year, the State Bar named Green the Citizen Lawyer of 2018 and he previously has served as the chairman of the Democratic Party of Catawba County.
New Judges Appointed.  Governor Roy Cooper announced several appointments to judicial positions around the state this week.  Ellen Shelly was appointed as a District Court Judge in District 29A, Kimberly Gasperson-Justice was appointed as a District Court Judge in District 29B, and Bob R. Cherry was appointed as District Court Judge in District 3B.
Courthouse Shooting.  WRAL reports that two people have been arrested following a shooting outside the Durham County Courthouse on Wednesday morning.  The shooting occurred at 9:30 a.m., with the victim collapsing at the main entrance of the building before being taken to the hospital where he was in serious but stable condition.  Equaan Straiter and Jordan Armand Terrell have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Running Safe.  This week runners in Guilford County were alerted to a person in the vicinity of popular running trails near Old battleground Road who was naked except for a jacket and sneakers.  Police searched the area but did not locate the person.  The incident is a good reminder to be aware of your surroundings while exercising alone outdoors as the weather warms up.

Folk Horror & Filmmaking: An Interview with Sean Garland by Kimberly Lindbergs
I recently asked director Sean Garland (BANSHEE BLACKTOP, AN IRISH GHOST STORY (2016) and NOKOTAHEART [2011]) a few questions about his filmmaking career. He also shares some Halloween streaming recommendations for FilmStruck subscribers that should appeal to discerning horror enthusiasts.
FILMSTRUCK: Could you tell readers a little bit about your background and how you became interested in filmmaking?
SEAN GARLAND: Well I grew up in a predominantly working-class North Dublin household where there was always a stream of activity. Three Irish sisters and three Irish brothers in one relatively small suburban house. My Ma had a quiet, encyclopedic knowledge of old movies and dad squirrelled us away in the dark of a Dublin cinema as often as possible to keep us preoccupied. I was the youngest, so I got to see a lot of films beyond my years. John Guillermin’s 1976 remake of KING KONG always comes to mind. I recall seeing it vividly in the cinema, with John Barry’s score washing over me, but I must have been only 4 or 5. The Christian Brothers school I attended (until I was 12) would often have a pop-up cinema on Fridays but they’d project the most random and irreverent films. One week it’d be HERBIE GOES BANANAS (’80) followed by Philip Kaufman’s INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (’78). Another week THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT (’74) followed by John Badham’s 1979 version of DRACULA. I was pretty young but old enough to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life after sitting up and watching JAWS (’75) with my Da one night on Irish TV.
I painted a fair bit back then, wrote short stories and always had a book in my hand. Two books in particular set me on a path in my teens: Michael Pye’s and Linda Myles’s The Movie Brats and Peter Nicholl’s Fantastic Cinema. It wasn’t enough anymore to immerse myself in other people’s movies, so I started shooting my own short stories on my sister’s video camera, which she brought home from London. It was the Ark of the Covenant to me, and Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan had shown the world you could be Irish and make great, impactful films for an international audience. Times were changing, so after leaving college after my first year (finding film studies too generic and unadventurous to ever be exciting) I came into contact with Jim Sheridan by sheer happenstance and somehow convinced him to give me a break. I got a job as a production assistant on IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER (’93) and, after a long stint travelling in the States and living in Los Angeles I finally elected to make my first short film, THE MAJESTY OF THE HAUNT (’96). We shot it on Super 16mm in County Wicklow for a pittance, a stone’s throw from where John Boorman shot EXCALIBUR (’81).
Tumblr media
FS: Who are some of the filmmakers that inspired you to start making your own movies?
SJG: When I was younger, the filmmakers that inspired me where chiefly within the pages of those two books (The Movie Brats & Fantastic Cinema). It was the Spielbergs, Carpenters and Cronenbergs, the Hal Ashbys and Terrence Malicks of the world that made me pursue a career as a director, but as I got older my tastes diversified. Pretty soon I was watching everything I could get my hands on. Ken Russell, Polanski, Roeg, Parker, Tarkovsky, Schlesinger, Michael Mann, Ridley Scott, Lumet, Leone, all the greats. I fell willingly down the rabbit hole let’s just say. I mean I loved David Lean, but I also overdosed on Romero— that kind of thing. That sense of discovery never really ends, don’t you think? Watching movies is still the best film school money can buy. One is always going to stumble upon a film or a particular filmmaker that slipped your net then resets your palette. It’s healthy. It keeps one intrigued and humble.
Tumblr media
FS: I absolutely agree. That sense of discovery and the desire to share my findings with others is what inspired me to start writing about cinema. Before you began making films you worked with other Irish filmmakers including Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan as a production assistant. What was that experience like?
SJG: I worked with Jim on IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER but never had the pleasure of working alongside Neil. My work on INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (’94) included pre-production just weeks before the bulk of the shoot in New Orleans. It was a straightforward gig really. I was to assist a handful of stuntmen who were rigging up Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt for the vampire flight sequences, which sadly never made the cut. I was just 20, fairly green and newly arrived in L.A. I was happy to get a job and never dreamed I’d be working alongside names like that months after rocking up in L.A. But what made the experience even more surreal and memorable for me was that it all took place at Stan Winston’s Studios. I’d gushingly arrive at least an hour before the crew in the morning and roam the workshops, chat to the staff and hang out in Stan’s display room where he kept his creations. I remember him being a very jovial, approachable man. As for the experience of working with Jim, I remember the first few weeks being something of a baptism of fire if I’m honest. Not because of Jim but because I was the new kid on the block, young and impressionable, but I soon toughened up and started to enjoy it. Jim was unerringly gracious though I probably drove him up the wall requesting to see the rushes and stand alongside the camera. He worked with cast and crew entirely without ego and that stuck with me for years.
Tumblr media
FS: I haven’t had a chance to see your first film (ABBOT’S APPROACH, ’00) but I believe it takes place in Ireland as does your most recent film, BANSHEE BLACKTOP, AN IRISH GHOST STORY. The latter film features some stunning location photography and incorporates elements of Irish mythology and folktales. How has your background and upbringing influenced your work and do you plan to make any more movies set in Ireland?
SJG: Anybody who's grown up in Ireland feels an intuitive vein of storytelling in their heritage. It's in the conversational tone of the people, the music you hear and the landscape that’s never too far from the city. You feel more Irish abroad because, until you leave, you don't realize you carry all that inside you on some instinctive level. So I've always returned to Ireland between other projects to make films and always will. BANSHEE BLACKTOP, AN IRISH GHOST STORY was an opportunity to indulge that connection with a lifelong love of slow-burn, atmosphere-laden ghost stories. BANSHEE BLACKTOP was always going to feel oblique and unsettling. It was never going to please the gore hounds or those who like their horror-fare readymade and jump-scared. It was non-horror films that served as inspiration while I was shooting: NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (‘55), WALKABOUT (‘71), PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (’75).
Tumblr media
FS: FilmStruck, in association with Criterion, has a wide variety of horror films available to stream this month in anticipation of Halloween, including some films that could fall under the folk horror banner such the Val Lewton classic ISLE OF THE DEAD (‘45) and the Japanese film KURONEKO (‘68). What are some of the horror films currently on FilmStruck that you would recommend readers watch this Halloween?
SJG: Well, right out the gate I’d pluck SPIRITS OF THE DEAD (‘68) off the shelf, if only to experience Fellini’s genuinely unforgettable “Toby Dammit” segment. I think it’s actually my favorite short film. I’d follow that up with ONIBABA (‘64), surely one of the greatest horror films ever made. And then, just to blindside myself, I’d treat myself to another queasy viewing of the hugely underrated THE NIGHTCOMERS (‘71), which I didn’t expect to warm up to upon my first viewing but was pleasantly...well, blindsided. It’s not THE INNOCENTS (‘61) but it’s a worthy ‘prequel’.

Observing the Elements with Caleb Deschanel: THE BLACK STALLION by Kimberly Lindbergs
In THE BLACK STALLION (’79), an 11-year-old boy (the wonderful Kelly Reno, who performs all of his own stunts) befriends a wild black stallion after he and the horse are both shipwrecked on a remote island. When the boy is finally rescued, the stallion returns home with him and the two become inseparable companions before entering the high stakes world of professional horse racing. This children’s classic contains very little dialogue and as a result, cinematographer Caleb Deschanel becomes the storyteller. His camera boldly employs the four elements (FIRE, WATER, AIR and EARTH) to tell this timeless tale, which allows viewers to experience a child’s sense of awe and wonderment in his natural surroundings. I hope the following images will illustrate why THE BLACK STALLION earned Deschanel numerous award nominations for his cinematography.
