By far the most swag I've ever amassed at one con (and that's not including the two tote bags and tees I picked up too!). Huge thanks to @legendsconsortium for hosting a truly legendary celebration of all things Star Wars Expanded Universe. I've already made it 2/3 through Craig Miller's book, and I managed to snag the last hardcover copy of Jon Bongiorno's Supernatural Encounters. That's gonna be fun to whip out at the local pubs.

My main outfit for the weekend was Shadows of the Empire Luke, but as soon as I'd heard there'd be a cantina party I knew I was gonna have to rep my man's hot chocolate obsession, so Bachelor Party Luke got a little turnt on his favorite beverage, lol.
I had a blast at LegendsCon and I'm watching your career with great interest!

Listeners to this weeks forthcoming episode of Making Tracks will hear all about Legends Con, the first running of which takes place at the Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, California over the weekend of September 9th - 10th 2023. There's also a Kickstarter running to facilitate further guests, which needs the support of the wider literature community to see it reach target by 26th June, a week from today. The Legends Consortium announces their first LegendsCon, a fan-run convention focused on celebrating the Star Wars Expanded Universe books, comics, games, and other media that are now known as Legends. The show will feature vendors, artists, authors and other special guests all focused on Expanded Universe media. LegendsCon is open to all ages and will be held September 9th and 10th, 2023 at the Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, California. The convention is organized and run by fans of the Expanded Universe (Legends), and is not affiliated, sponsored or run by Lucasfilm LTD. All proceeds from LegendsCon will be donated to The Peter Mayhew Foundation, a 501(c)(3) founded by the late Peter and Angie Mayhew. The Mayhew Foundation is devoted to the alleviation of disease, pain, suffering, and the financial toll brought on by life’s traumatic events. “With this convention, we seek to create an event that brings together fans in an environment that fosters positivity and inclusivity while we celebrate our love of Legends material,” stated Katherine Winchell, Legends Consortium Executive Director. Creators who have contributed to the stories and history of the Star Wars Expanded Universe including Randy Stradley, Matthew Stover, Corinna Bechko, Sean Stewart, Barbara Hambly, and Abel Peña will be appearing at LegendsCon to meet with fans, sign autographs, and participate in panels throughout the weekend. The three panel halls featured at LegendsCon will also house fan-led panels, a small fanfilm festival, trivia contests, a costume contest, a fashion show, and live performances. Additionally, a reception will be held on the evening of Saturday, September 9th featuring hors d'oeuvres, a bar and exclusive swag. Tickets for LegendsCon are on sale now through EventBrite, and you can provide additional support though Kickstarter through June 26th, or via Kofi.com for a variety of perks and rewards. Donations provided to our Kickstarter campaign will help fund the appearance of more special guests at the event, as well as other exciting additions. Applications for fanfilms, fan panels, fan booths, costume contest, and fashion show can be found on the programming page of the LegendsCon website. Media badge applications for press, content creators and professionals are open through July 1st. FebruarOC - Kaedmon
oh my god fam we did it we made it to the end of the month!!! And so to close it off, I'm going to talk about my Jedi OC Kaedmon because I've already talked about Uriah and ended kiss week with a drabble for them, so why not also end FebruarOC with Kaedmon.
She was created on the tail end of listening to AMCA pod talking about their trip to the Halcyon (the immersive SW experience at disney world) and they were talking about the value of LARP vs something where it is a designed as family vacation and the varying degrees of interest in becoming a character.
So then I looked up SW LARPs in my area and good news there is one up in the PNW so, look out Washington, I'm lookin right at you.
When I drew her back for OC-tober (back when she was the newest character and now I have at least three new ones smh) I didn't have a name for her, but then I decided to use an old name that I've had for... not LARP characters exactly, but I was toying with the idea for using it when I was in the SCA and then again as a steampunk character thing for an RP that never took off (I ended up changing the general conceit, and that's what became Mutiny) but I still did a costume for. So I decided to give it to the Jedi OC i started making for LARP purposes! Just to continue the tradition.
I decided to make her from Naboo MOSTLY because at LegendsCon in September I bought a Naboo Royal Sabacc deck from Hyperspace Props (you should DEFINITELY check out what they offer their stuff is GREAT), and so like, let's go Naboo, right? I was also thinking a lot of embroidery on things (specifically in a Slavic cultural concept), and I have a pair of pirate-esque costume pants with little eyelets on the side that I wanted to do embroidery around the eyelets and went "oh, naboo designs would be cool!".
And tadaa, the general concept of her was born!
Now, you might go "Mab, I thought you hate the Jedi order, why are you making a Jedi OC?" and well, you're right I do hate the Jedi Order but Jedi/force users outside of the order are some of my favorite characters. Rebels is my all time favorite show and also I love Cal Kestis, so like. You take the honor and concepts and remove the way that the order is depicted and implemented and there you go, that's better. It's the same reason I like Paladins, because there's a degree of guilt with the freedom that's fun to explore, you know? And I would love to see more Jedi in a post order-66 setting in which they get to explore what using their powers means for them, now that they're not in a war they shouldn't have been generals/commanders in, but you get the added benefit of needing to not be public about it. (Unless you're Cal Kestis.)
Another thing I really wanted when doing the original costume design was just to allow a Jedi or just a character in general in SW have a visible disability/need an accessibility device. Sure you have plo koon who needs a breathing apparatus because his species can't function on most worlds, but what about someone who needs a respirator to help breathe even on their home planet? SW is NOTORIOUS about villainizing disabilities (shoutouts to everyone who headcanons Ezra's funny little armor thing as a mobility device you're the real ones) (give Cere back her cane from the concept art YOU COWARDS!!!) and I wanted the excuse to use a respirator mask for a costume piece partly for covid safety and partly because it would be bad-ass. My breathing issues are minor, all things considered (though really I should get an inhaler), but they're still issues. To Kaedmon, I give you my asthma, but make it worse!
For her, she was 17 when the clone wars ended, and was up for consideration for getting knighted. Except that the clone squadron she was with locked her in somewhere and pumped in like, particulates or a toxin or something and while she was able to cut her way out, she couldn't get immediate medical attention and it ended up causing permanent damage to her lungs, so she needs a breathing apparatus to help her get enough oxygen. And she can exist without it depending on how strenuous the task, but it makes functioning far easier.
I haven't figured out how she knows she's from naboo because of normal jedi things, but she goes back there after order-66 (she is able to sneak on planet during padme's funeral because there's so many people coming), and she spends a few years living with her cousin. But then she leaves to join the Rebellion!
She becomes a Fulcrum agent of a sorts, and has a crew that she works with on the regular to do jobs. Vleewa is her best friend and "handler" for a lack of a better word. Kaite is making a medic OC, and so they're probably going to be on the crew too just for shenanigans.
She prefers to keep her Jedi abilities on the DL, and it's really not until much later into the war that she begins to use them with more frequency -- characters like Cal and Cere have their exploits reach her pretty early on, and it's all likelihood that she would have met Kanan and Ezra on Yavin, and she knew Ahsoka from the get-go as Fulcrum. And so seeing them make these big moves and sacrifices really makes her think about her place in all of it, and boy that guilt eats her up inside! So she makes more and more of a show of it despite how much she doesn't like her memories of being in the order and the clone wars. Sure, she lost a lot, but she has an obligation to help people!
Anyway if you have a TCW/rebellion-era SW OC, I'd love to meet them and maybe we can have shenanigans together 8) I'm also looking forward to creating a larp outfit and maybe getting the chance to participate one year!
The drabble will be on a separate post and will go up in full here! :) Thanks again everyone for putting up with 29 days of me talking about characters!!!!

When Subtext Is Text, Musings On Ferus Olin
It's the end of Pride month, and Legends Con Executive Director Katherine is taking the opportunity to talk about one of her favorite characters (and most recent cosplays), Ferus Olin. Ferus is one of the canonically queer characters in the Star Wars Legends timeline; and is, in her humble opinion, one of the most interesting representations of a queer character within the Star Wars universe.
Ferus comes from the Jude Watson books, first appearing in her Jedi Quest series and later leading the series Last of the Jedi. He also appeared in the Rebel Force series as a supporting character. All three of these series are Scholastic chapter books, published between the years of 2001 and 2010. They are progressive for their time in many ways, but are ultimately also a product of their time in how Ferus as a queer character is defined on the page. The line between subtext and text can be debated, but we have author confirmation via Twitter that Ferus is gay and married to Roan Lands. Roan was referred to as Ferus's "partner" throughout the Last of the Jedi and Rebel Force series. With these books being written throughout the 2000s, that was the current terminology used for gay couples at the time- and marriage was not even a legal option within the United States.
The term partner is really only the beginning of the signs we see in-text that Ferus and Roan are a couple. The most interesting of those to me is this passage from the first book in the Last of the Jedi series. Obi-Wan has just rescued Roan from Imperial prison after both Ferus and Roan were arrested for leading rebel activities and separated within the prison. As part of the misadventures that occurred with Obi-Wan and Ferus after that, they are forced to temporarily leave behind the planet Bellassa where Ferus had been living with Roan. While in space Ferus and Obi-Wan talk about how Ferus resigned from the Jedi Order (that’s another story entirely, I don’t want to get too off track here)
“It doesn’t matter,” Ferus said. “I walked away. It was the most difficult thing I ever had to do, but in a way I’m glad it happened.”
“You’re still a Jedi, Ferus.”
“No,” Ferus said slowly. “I’m not. I can never really be a Jedi again. Not just because I left the Order.” He looked back in the direction of Bellassa. “I have attachments.”
“Once there was something I wanted, something forbidden by the Jedi code,” Obi-Wan said. “Qui-Gon said something to me then. He said, maybe in a different galaxy things will change. The Jedi will change. Here is the change Ferus. And I think… in the new order, attachments will be a strength. Maybe this is how the galaxy will be saved. So yes, you are still a Jedi.”
Obi-Wan is referring to events of the Jedi Apprentice books, also by Jude Watson, where he entered a brief romance with one of his fellow Padawans, Siri Tachi. Obi-Wan and Siri decided to end their relationship due to the Jedi code, which led to that conversation with Qui-Gon. In the text this is Ferus saying that his relationship with Roan is outside the bounds of the Jedi code, and Obi-Wan draws a parallel to a romantic relationship of his own. I personally would call this plain text rather than subtext based on both the context in-universe and the context that this was written in 2005.
Throughout the story there are more signs that while subtle, Ferus and Roan’s relationship is romantic. It's the way they tease each other, care for each other, and little snippets about their life together-
