Not... getting soft. Just... didn’t eat much beforehand.

*The cold air helps his head some and he straightens up. Still leaning on Lettie, though not as heavily as before. Still tipsy, but able to think clearly. Looks a little sheepish.*

Rarely do before acts. Wouldn’t do much good if the flying trapeze artist got sick while in midair, huh?

It just hit hard, that’s all.

*As they walk on, he becomes much less reliant on Lettie. Still somewhat woozy, but manages to straighten to the point that the only support she’s got on him is a hand in his. Smiles and brings her hand to his lips in thanks, nothing more than a friendly gesture, before letting go.*

*Listens fondly to Barnum’s words, sympathetic toward the ringmaster, but not pitiful. Much of the troupe knows how much Barnum hates to be pitied over the recent separation.*

*He starts to frown, though, as the conversation suddenly shifts from Barnum to himself.*

A lady?

At present, the only lady I’ve got waiting for me at home is Luna.

*He shrugs*

I’m sure they’re out there, I just haven’t bothered to look. Companionship would be nice, but I’ve Luna for now — and what better joy can a man be greeted with than an overly eager Labrador waiting for his return home?

*Chuckles.*

As soon as I’ve time in my life for a woman, Barnum, I’ll let you know.

Top left: Willow, foster. Dalmatian mix. Deaf. Available for adoption!

Top right: Spot and Mike! Spot is adopted and gets picked up next week. Mike is available for adoption. Blue heeler mixes.

Bottom left: Althea Jane [Thea]. She's a boxer/pittie mix I went and rescued off of death row because the shelter contacted me and begged me to help her. She has had a very bad, abusive life and she is still afraid of me sometimes but she is a gentle giant. So sweet. So loving. Available for adoption!

Bottom right: these three dogs are MINE. The girl with the white head is Bailey. Koki is the boy beneath her, with the brindle face and pointy ears. The black and white dog with the long shaggy hair on the right by herself is Luna, who was my very first doggo! All three of them are half-pit. Luna has some border collie and rottie. Bailey has lab and rottie. Koki has chow and gray wolf!! All 3 were rescues. I found Koki and Luna as babies abandoned on the street. Bailey was a foster fail. She was abandoned at a dollar general.

They all live at my house currently and it is a circus. Someone please adopt Willow, Thea, and Mikey lol.

BIO

She’s an only child, having been raised by her uncle losing both of her parents when she was still just a baby. Her mother during childbirth and her father an an unfortunate accident. As a child Jade was very inquisitive, always fascinated in particular with the moon itself, and how it had power over them all. So much so that she was given the nickname of Luna because of it.

As she grew she found herself drifting ever closer to the circus, something she went to see every year as a pup. Her uncle doing everything he could to get her there so she could see the acts herself. She had a knack for the arts, dancing and gymnastics were things she came to really excel at. Her uncle would do what he could to foster that love, even though he knew nothing about either of the things. Her dream was to become a performer like the ones she’s seen when the circus started.

Eventually she would join them, making a spot for herself among their ranks, and she couldn’t be happier. It keeps her busy and safe, the two things her uncle wanted the most for her.

Buckle in, folks! This post is going to be a long one.

Elephant Nature Park changed our lives. Thank you for the recommendation, Shannon! I am 1000% confident we made the right choice in spending the money we did on this sanctuary. I actually don't even know how to sum our week up in this blog post because nothing I write will ever do it justice.

I held back tears on multiple occasions: as we watched real footage from the park elephants' past lives, and unfortunately, also as we watched other elephants being mistreated the exact same way in real-time just a few minutes down the road from ENP. Maybe I'm just fortunate to be educated on this topic, but I can't help but feel some resentment towards the tourists who STILL. RIDE. ELEPHANTS. I mean, come on. It's almost 2020 and you still don't know riding elephants is bad? That being said, I learned a lot of new information... like how bad 99% of elephant tourism companies are. As I'm sure many of you already know -- riding elephants, circus elephants, dancing elephants, street begging elephants, polo elephants, elephants that "paint".. those are all terrible. But the thing that really gets to me is that companies recognize that tourists are becoming more aware of this/would rather spend their money on ethical options, so they falsely advertise their programs as humane and beneficial when they are far from it. There are sadly many so-called sanctuaries that mistreat the elephants behind tourists' backs, or put the tourists' photo needs before the needs of the elephant. A perfect example of this is elephant bathing: a seemingly harmless excursion, as elephants love being in the water... right? In reality, the mahouts will force the elephants to go into the cold water repeatedly throughout the day with new rounds of people throwing buckets of water on them & taking photos. The elephants would never be in the water this long/often if it were up to them, and sometimes they get hypothermia because their bodies are not adjusted to spending prolonged periods of time in these temperatures. Not only that, but the elephants wouldn't let people touch them all day long without having had their spirit broken as a baby -- a process I encourage you to look up if you've never heard about it. I had no idea elephant tourism was so bad and I thought I was pretty educated on the topic, so I'm sure there are loads of other people who have no idea it's this bad, either.

I could go on for ages about animal mistreatment in tourism. Don't even get me started on the Tiger Kingdom 😤

On a more positive note, ENP was the closest thing to heaven on earth for the animals and it was so refreshing to see. There were rescued water buffalos, cows, horses, cats, dogs, and elephants roaming around. The closest we got to the elephants was to feed them treats, as shown. This was only done once and it was the only time we got to touch an elephant throughout the entire week. I couldn't have been happier to just watch them do their thing from afar, knowing they're happy being elephants and not forced into a situation they don't want to be in.

ENP's dog rescue program shelters over 480 dogs right now. Most of the pups were saved from the dog meat trade, puppy mills, natural disasters, or being left near-dead after being run over/neglected/abused. My heart was warmed by how much love is given to every animal at ENP.

We had the honour of meeting Lek, the founder of the park. She is truly a hero and the role model I never knew I had until hearing her story. She gave up everything for this park and dedicated her entire life to these amazing creatures. She told Mat and me that we're free to visit the affiliated park in Cambodia if we get the chance even though it's not open to the public yet. We're already planning on coming back to ENP to help volunteer with the dogs as they are so short-staffed and we fell in love with every single dog we met (we spent our free time walking them).

And the cats..... I loved the cats!!!! So many sassy cats, cuddly cats, fluffy cats, stub-tailed cats... and still none as fat as Freddie ;)

If this week confirmed one thing, it's that I most definitely prefer animals over people. I think I remember the names of MAYBE 5 volunteers, but I already miss Tuna, Luna, Ruff, Rustie, Old Man, Monday, Today, Peanut, King, Fox Mumma, Lucky, Saza, Sydney, and every other animal I met.
