[ID: Two GIFs from Lupin III: The First (2019). Lupin tips his hat. Zenigata tips his own hat in response, with some kind of enamored expression on his face. End ID.]

In Lupin III: The First, Lupin said that he would see Laetitia again in 5 years. That movie came out in 2019... so I better be seeing a Lupin III: The Second coming out in 2024.

Finally took time and watched Lupin III: The First after owning it for like, 2 years.
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed what they did with this movie. They managed to make something that could reach already existing fans of the franchise while also creating a good introduction to these characters for people discovering this series for the first time.
So some background, my first introduction to Lupin was through Part II on Adult Swim and it didn't really make me interested. I don't know if it was a "wrong place, wrong time" sort of thing but I just wasn't won over. However, funny enough, outside of the show there was still just something about the style of the characters that spoke to me. I wasn't fucking with the show and yet here I was looking for figures of the characters online so there was something sparked there. Part IV is what completely hooked me in the end and if this film was my first exposure to the "Lupiniverse" it would have gotten me too. You especially don't turn the car around after that laser scene.
Tumblr media
One of the things about Lupin when you're already into it, however, is you can strongly feel the history of the characters and you feel it in this movie.
Tumblr media
The main thing I have to gush about of course though is the animation. The style and animation was stunning as all hell. It was already impressive seeing it on those posters and in trailers but when actually watching the film it stands out even more. Ultimately it was better than doing a live action adaptation. It's a combination of the little details live action could bring while also never losing every animated movement and charm of the series making it the best of both worlds.

lupin iii: the first looks better than any american produced 3d animated film bc its actually animated and not just mo-capped to hell and back (in fact not at all) or striving to look realistic (and in doing so, looks realistic and organic to the world it has created).
godzilla in godzilla minus one is so effective and look so good despite the budget/limitations because the director is actually someone involved with, and good at, directing animation (the same director for the film mentioned above) , who understands how to make that look good
putting aside the (valuable and not untrue) critiques of the film industry, especially in japan, its almost like things will be good if you actually put the right people on the job who understand what the fuck theyre doing and what theyre working with

I can't believe I rewatched The First only to see in which wrist Lupin keeps his weird spy watch thing. Turns out the answer is both wrists. Yeah it changes place. Constantly. Between scenes, too, to the point where it doesn't even make sense. Why is it so imperative you wear it on your left wrist during the first day you met Laetitia, then switch to the right wrist while sneaking around the boat, and THEN how the hell did you switch it after you got the diary? You're not even ambidextruous, you're a cosmic horror

We need to go back and appreciate how Lupin the First was able to hit this weirdly perfect mixture of realistic detail with stylized characters and animation. It also unabashedly embraces the physics and silliness that comes with the Lupin series while also being able to handle dramatic and threatening moments very well.

A Year of Lupin
Part 4
Part IV: The Italian Adventure
My favorite series of the Lupin franchise. The adventures mainly take place in Italy, and I absolutely love it! The main story went from one place to another, and the side stories were incredible. The opening of this Lupin is the best version of the Lupin theme. The animation style is so creative along with the color palette. The Japanese and English cast were brilliant. The music score of Yuji Ohno is amazing as always, but it's not included in the English dub. I recommend watching both to get the best of both worlds but also, I really love this Lupin so much.

Part V: Misadventures in France
Lupin is back with modern technology. The stories are treated like episodes themselves with multiple episodes telling the main story. The filler episodes are also great where we see Lupin in different jacket colors. I'm not a fan with certain things in the series like the treatment of Ami and the finale didn't feel complete with quick resolutions. The references in this series were good, but when they were a part of a main story, I didn't like that. Still, the concept of Lupin being in the social media wasn't bad. I just wish some things were done better. Everything from the cast, music, and animation is the same as before: wonderful.

Prison of the Past
This special blew my expectations. I love this style of the animation, the story was incredible with its action along with the lore of the county the gang are in, and some characters in this special were great. It's on the same level as Tokyo Crisis; I have a lot of fun watching a prison break, royalty mysteries, and stolen treasure.

Is Lupin Still Burning?
The OVA is a celebration the 50th anniversary of Lupin Part 1, Is Lupin Burning. They reuse the same premise but add time travel that can affect Lupin's future. It's pretty cool to see how far Lupin has come as a franchise with the animation evolving and the bond that the gang share will always be the same.
Tumblr media
Lupin the Third: The First
The first Lupin movie in CG, and it was delightful. I was worried that the CG wouldn't be good, but they have made it so good to translate the antics and expressions that the Lupin universe has. It wasn't stiff and basic; it was fluid and detailed. The story was good, and both sub & dub cast were incredible. Laetitia was so sweet, and I hope she gets to excel in Boston University.
Tumblr media
Part VI
The most recent of the Lupin franchise where Lupin cross paths with Sherlock Holmes and his mother. There were two story arcs in this show, and I think it could have worked if they didn't have a lot of filler episodes. There were unanswered things that were never mentioned again; however, I like the finale better than Part 5. The animation was mostly fine, but all those CG cars were terrible. The cast were great, and for the Japanese cast, I enjoy Akio Otsuka's performance as Jigen. I'm glad they gave a farewell to Kiyoshi Kobayashi. Overall, it was good series and can't wait to see the gang again.

Basic Visual Analysis! Because I can. You could probably glean what I’m about to say just by looking at the above image, but if you want to read some words, here they are:
Lupin stands at the center, staring down the audience. [He's the star.] The Fiat [“Home”] is just behind, underpinning the character lineup. The placement of Lupin and the Fiat together at the center indicates a system of organization where characters closer to the core occupy an overall more dominant position in the show’s hierarchy than characters at the periphery. (This may sound obvious, but it’s actually not always the case. Contrast against the second group shot in the film, where there's no Fiat, OR against the end of the Part IV OP where the Fiat is at the left.)
Jigen and Goemon occupy the first tier, immediately flanking Lupin. Both of their bodies are angled slightly outwards. [Equivalence. Balance.] Jigen is at the viewer’s right [1st] and Goemon is at the viewer's left [2nd]. (← Remember it’s a Japanese film. Right to left.) Jigen and Goemon each share half their pose with Lupin. [Visual echo. Mutual Influence.] The repetition of Jigen’s pose is more exact. [Again, he's 1st.]
The center of the Fiat [“Home”] is offset from the center of the shot [Lupin]. The car’s apparent midline instead falls between Lupin and Jigen. [Compromise. Interdependence.] The front of the Fiat is angled towards Jigen. He leans back against its hood, slouching out of the lineup and minimizing himself. His position eclipses the driver’s side windshield. [Jigen is the driver. It may be Lupin’s show and Lupin’s car, but if the Fiat is “home”, then it’s really Jigen who decides where home is.]
Fujiko and Zenigata stand in mirrored poses at the periphery. Fujiko’s arm is positioned to match Zenigata’s coat collar. [They’re more similar than they might appear.] Both of them are angled far enough outward that their backs are turned to Lupin. [They’re his enemy-friends.] Despite the position of his feet/body, Zenigata turns his face to meet the viewer head-on. Meanwhile, Fujiko’s face remains in profile. [Honesty vs Deception.] Fujiko is positioned at the left with Goemon. They overlap. [Connection.] This leaves Zenigata at the right, next to the negative space Jigen has left behind. [Zenigata unmistakably occupies the lowest rung of the hierarchy, the first to be excluded from the in-group.]
This shot appears on screen for three seconds, during which you can grasp all this information intuitively. A picture is worth a thousand words, baby.

I love the animation style! They are the one that did all of the Sonic movies. I hope the production company will thrive and make more!
Lupin III: The First is a 2019 Japanese 3D CGI-animated comedy action-adventure heist film based on the Lupin the Third franchise created by Monkey Punch. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, it was animated by Marza Animation Planet and TMS Entertainment, and is the first 3DCG installment in the franchise. The film stars Kanichi Kurita as Lupin III, Kiyoshi Kobayashi as gunman Daisuke Jigen, Daisuke Namikawa as samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII, Miyuki Sawashiro as Fujiko Mine, and Kōichi Yamadera as Interpol detective Zenigata.

Jigen in CGI is really hot! And how you finally get to see his eyes sometimes is so awesome. Because their are always hidden. :)

You go to the cinema, to watch Lupin III: The Second. You buy yourself the ticket and some popcorn, and then, when the time comes, you enter your room expecting to have a jolly time. You sit through the ads with great impatience. You don't give a fuck about the newest movie Scramble Dangle stars on. The Second starts. As you gaze upon the screen, your eyes squint and you frown: Lupin's chin scruff has become scruffier, and now there is a pseudo-moustache forming. It is irrelevant to the plot, but you go home thinking about it.
Three years later, you repeat the process. Again you notice the same phoenomenon. Then another three years, then another three, until you realize that no one in the cast has made the slighest remark about the stereotypical 17th century French moustache the CGI model now wears at all times.
