He doesn't miss how red her face gets, or how many moments she needs to compose herself afterward-- Seifer hadn't exactly been playing fair, when he'd lowered his voice and murmured an intimate option for thanking him for saving her life.
The grief from the rest of the squad is worth knowing the effect he's had on Yuna because of it; he keeps a mostly-private, entirely too pleased with himself grin on his face the whole rest of the journey to Macalania Temple.
(He does not particularly enjoy the jarring change in temperature, from pleasant warmth to near-freezing, but inside the temple, the guest quarters are warm, and so are the hot springs he's directed toward, when he asks where he can take a shower.
One towel slung over his shoulder later, he follows the path he was pointed on, into the peaceful quiet of the sequestered springs, and for a little bit, he is actually alone. Able to breathe, to think.
No one's in the first little spring he encounters, steam wafting invitingly off the bubbling, bright blue water; Seifer wastes very little time stripping down to nothing and easing himself into the pool, relief in every fiber of his body as sore, tense, thoroughly-abused muscles welcome the heat.
He almost misses Yuna, head back against a convenient rock and eyes closed as he basks like a damn lizard in the sun, but her footsteps are not entirely silent, and eventually, he opens his eyes again, watching her in the fading twilight.
No one would say the summoner isn't pretty; he watches the line of her body, the swish of the pleats in her skirt, the way her hair moves when she looks around. "Pretty" is probably not the right word-- gorgeous, if one happens to like slight brunettes who aren't afraid to speak their minds.
(And, alas, that is exactly Seifer Almasy's type.)
"Care to join me?" he inquires, voice lazy, making no effort at modesty for her sake. She came out here for the same damn reason he did, judging by the towel in her hands.
"Plenty of room left, if you want."

tseng for the ask meme!
sexuality hc: irrelevant but mostly queer. he's been with women, but has found he prefers men as he gets older.
gender hc: he is gender envy to literally everyone around him.
a ship that i have: tseeve (they are soulmates). HOWEVER, it may surprise you to know that my first ff7 ship ever was tseng/vincent, affectionately known as the verboten otp. why? spicy reasons (they are still so spicy but i don't write it much anymore). another pairing i quite like is cloud/tseng but only post-canon, and i have been known to ship tsengru under very specific conditions.
a brotp: tseng/zack. they're such BROS. also, seph/tseng!
a notp: tseng/aerith (i like the idea of him teaching her how to protect herself, but they have more of an estranged siblings vibe) and tseng/elena (she's 18, he's at least 30, not to mention there's a HUGE power imbalance and again, i can see him mentoring her but romantically? huge no).
random hc: okay so, tseng's family clan back in wutai used to serve as priests at one of the temples of leviathan, but going back even further, they are descendants from spira (specifically, moonflow region when there had been a city there). due to the folly of his ancestors, they became scattered across spira, but ended up being between djose temple and macalania temple.
fast forward back to gaia, and as a result, he learnt quite a few ways of the temple of leviathan. when tseng was (forcibly) moved to midgar, he tried to put it in the past, preferring to move on, however at some point, he lost a tiny statue he had of leviathan (his mother gifted it to him) and as a result, he ends up getting leviathan tattooed across his back so he could still carry her with him wherever he went.
(my other random hc is that post-fight/torture at the hands of the Remnants, he ends up not recovering fully and tends to wear an eyepatch.)
...i actually have a lot of headcanons but i'll stop here.
general opinion: tseng has been my main blorbo for so many years, alongside cait sith and mog. he's such an interesting character, who truly proves that not everything is so black and white within the compilation, and that is no more evident than in his actions. a lot of people tend to lump him in with the rest of the turks or completely ignore his characterisation in favour for louder characters (like reno and rude), only seeing him in a pairing (tsengru) or apparently hunting down zack for shinra (that's not what he was doing oh my god please stop).
anyway, i could talk about him all day.

@braskide : let the story begin
Tumblr media
squall has never been to bevelle.
though he journeyed, it was on a pilgrimage cut short by uncertainty. by doubt, fear, and whispers on the wind of kidnapped summoners and political upheaval. he remembers them stopping in the crystalline forest of macalania. ( ‘We gotta stop for now…somethin’ feels wrong. Just in my gut…we’re gonna stop for a bit. Play it safe. ‘).  the subsequent overturning of temple and faith, of everything spira had built itself upon would prove his father’s words had some basis to them. for safety’s sake, their pilgrimage halted –  and then suddenly there would be nothing to pilgrimage for. purpose had to be sought out once again as father and son turned their back on a journey now ended to soon ( and rightfully so ).
squall had no interest in the overly zealous, rowdy nature of the youth league that oversaw the reconstruction of his home. history – it’s preservation – was their creed, and yet their actions reflected something far more self-serving. he could never be certain, but them – and new yevon they feuded with – both seemed to have such selfish, image-focused ideals backing their pursuits. attempts to appease and create statements seemed interwoven into all of their actions, more so than their belief in their own cause.
belief. faith. where has that gone? spira lacks in it these days.
though who is squall to question such a thing? he, who barely had faith when it was omnipresent. life for him now is side jobs – enough to keep his pockets lined and have a few stories to share with his father.
Tumblr media
how much would traveling to bevelle to request an audience with the high summoner earn him? he crosses the visitor’s threshold of the once holy place he’d never the chance to visit – gazed upon by cloaked officials who very blatantly eye the weaponry at his hip – machina in part, but primarily made of common weapon making material - steel and the like. how bizarre such gazes can still be earned so many years later.
squall clears his throat, " a delivery for the high summoner. the machine faction - gippal - is my employer. "

Ann's first trip through Spira is really just her acquiring her squad, save for two members -
Sue: Ann's starting Guardian
Kaizen: Macalania Travel Agency, first pass through(results in Ann not going to the temple to get Shiva & saves that for the second pass) @warriorsofcrimsonrealms
Kazuko: Thunder Planes, first pass through(happens as she gets stuck by lightning so of course Ann must save her) @iunctura
Laura: Moonflow, first pass through(catches up to ANn while waiting for the Shoopuff) @warriorsofcrimsonrealms
Souji: Mi'ihen Highroad, first pass through(was most likely hired to protect the chocobos, also most likely results in the group fighting the chocobo eater) @akumanoken
Ayato: Luca, first pass through(he is defs still there for the bar skirmish & helps the group save Ann from the Al Bhed) @akumanoken
Lescia: Mushroom Rock Road, second pass through(doesn't officially become a guardian until after Operation Mi'ihen, but she is there throughout said operation) @warriorsofcrimsonrealms
Xaos: Moonflow, second pass through(tries to kidnap Ann, fails, only reason he lives & becomes a guardian is because of the one he kidnapped) @prettyboywarrior

More glimpses of Spira from noclip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just discovered the houses in Besaid Village have wicker screens that can be erected to block off the doors just inside their entrances at night, providing a bit of a porch for shedding wet clothes (It must get a lot of rain; every house has a rainbarrel on the roof.)
Also, I've been providing these without commentary so you can look at the images and discover things on your own,but a few observations on previous photosets:
In the Crusader's Lodge, there's a map of Spira. You've probably caught that, but what I hadn't noticed was the sword rack on the other side of that divider wall, or the inkwell and pen on the "innkeeper" desk. There's also a couple spear racks and the Crusader banner, and piles of food and drink stores against the wall by Gatta's desk.
That ruin on the path from Besaid Village where Kimahri jumps down to haze Tidus? The roots sprawling all over it are really spectacular.
In the Aurochs' Luca locker room, in addition to the ball rack, there's a shelf with folded towels and some binders/books: one is named "SPORTS"; I haven't worked out the others. Also there's posters for past tournaments between the Aurochs and various teams including the Bevelle Bells. And, to my disappointment, I was finally able to read the names on the lockers, but they're just things like Xcdef Yghij Zklmn in Spiran script.

Maester Mika's ship has paddlewheels as well as sails.
The street vender in Luca Square, who I believe was Al Bhed, has Luca Goers and Al Bhed Psyches t-shirts for sale. a "blitzball" magazine, baseball caps, team posters and pennants.
Rin's Travel Agency offers "Free Rooms." Does that mean "rooms available," or does the Church of Yevon subsidize an Al Bhed businessman to keep couriers and other travelers from being killed by fiends? The latter sounds like typical Yevon hypocrisy and a nice racket for Rin.
After Operation Mi'ihen fails, the Al Bhed's ginormous laser canon (same kind of guns Cid fits on the airship) lies broken across the lefthand side of the beach; Auron's standing in its shadow. Right after the disaster, there's corpses or something blocking the way so you can't go back, but soon that barrier is removed so you can use the fallen gun as a ramp up to Mushroom Rock Road.
The shoopuf's body is dimly visible underwater. (In general, anytime there's something visible underwater, or there's a reflection, it's actually a complete model on the other side of the water/glass, flipped if it needs to be a mirror image.)
Is Macalania Temple another airship?
When the party falls through the ice at Macalania Lake, they land on the miscellaneous debris stuck on Sin's head. From above, you can see its two fins looming in the background.
In Bevelle, the chamber where the guard pushes Tidus into the water side of the Via Purifico also has the gate to Yuna's side and the door to Jecht's cell. if Braska hadn't freed Jecht, that might've been where he was headed.
The Tower of Light of Bevelle, atop which Yuna's wedding took place, rises up behind Bevelle's main gates, visible from the Highbridge.
Yojimbo's Fayth is sealed with ribbons that read "Seal."
If you've ever seen a fayth statue of Jecht, it's a phenomenal piece of fanart that's been floating around on the web for over a decade. It's not in-game.

Revisiting Religion in Final Fantasy X
I've been replaying Final Fantasy X recently, and it's been interesting to both play a game I loved growing up and in some ways grew up with as I replayed it several times over my life till now. I've since started studying religion and theology in grad school, and I started thinking about how much religion plays a role in FF games. FFX shows it most prominently, and it's certainly accepted by a pretty large part of the fanbase that the game is critical of religion.
That being said, I noticed something when Tidus arrives in Besaid, and encounters the Yevonite religion for the first time (and apparently religion in general). Tidus never really criticizes the temple or the teachings of Yevon, even though he's irreverent to the extent of breaking into the Cloister of Trials and admitting that he's never prayed before. He also remarks that he senses a "gentleness" coming from the aeon Valefor when Yuna summons her for the first time. Tidus isn't really hostile to religion, and even in latter parts of the game, he never criticizes Yuna or anyone else for believing in Yevon. He even gives Auron a little grief for not being more respectful in Guadosalam; and when the party falls to the lake bottom in Macalania, he says "Praise be to Yevon; that's what I would have said, if I was a follower of Yevon". This, despite having just witnessed easily the most blatant display of priestly corruption in Seymour's murder of his father. It's not to say that Tidus is sympathetic to Yevon, but more that his retrospective in Zanarkand isn't in the least marked by an animosity toward religious figures.
The reason I'm pointing all this out is that while it's true that FFX presents a narrative that is critical of religious figures in-universe, I've come to the conclusion that it would be mistake to assert that the game's basic posture is criticality towards religion. It's certainly not the extent to which such a position appears in Persona or Shin Megami Tensei games (which is a whole other conversation). In fact, I would go so far as to say that FFX actually is very pro-religion to an extent, but is more solidly critical of corruption and moral complacency. I see this most in Tidus and Yuna's relationship, as their growth as characters explains much about what core values and messages lie at the heart of the game.
Tidus, as the self-insert main character with a personality, is kind of like our lens on Spira. He is always very empathetic toward and considerate of Yuna's feelings about Yevon and the path of being a summoner. Yes, he doesn't know the truth about the Final Summoning till quite late, but he never denies what the pilgrimage does for the summoner. Even while not always jibing with its rules about machina, self-sacrifice and authority/tradition, Tidus doesn't deny the more basic religious beliefs of Yevonites. His retrospective narration doesn't really focus on religion at all, either.
To be fair, I might be stretching it a bit here, since the personal values of Yevonites are never truly explained beyond the necessity of the pilgrimage and a reverence for summoners. But what we do see: caring for the wounded, praying for others, the processing of death through the sending, and the way feelings are foregrounded in the reality of beings (ex. the dream of the fayth), tell us a lot about the religiosity of Spirans in general (and not even just Yevonites).
And really, what confirms my perspective more than anything else, is that because this is a fantasy RPG, all the magic and summoning is 100% real. There's no room to debate that summoning, mysticism and prayer are not essential parts of this society, in a way that directs all blame for suffering to human fallibility (such as in Mika, Seymour and Yu Yevon). Even post-Bevelle, Yuna's spirit is never broken, and even more so when the party fights Yunalesca. Yuna never ceases to be motivated by her determination to save Spira from Sin, to help people and to believe in her guardians to walk beside her. She continues to entreat the fayth at temples in spite of her wavering trust in the institution that sanctioned her pilgrimage in the first place. The fact that the fayth themselves are unconcerned with Yevon as an institution and continue to empower summoners should say a great deal, as they seem to enter into a kind of spiritual relationship with the summoner through prayer. In Auron's own words: "The fayth are the ones that give power to the summoners. Not the temples or the teachings."
That might seem like instrumentalization on Auron's part, but I think his resentment at some level has little to do with Yevon's teachings, and more to do with its duplicity in the face of immense tragedy and willingness to deceive the people with false hope. His faith Braska and Jecht, his past as a warrior monk and his troubled friendship with Kinoc all seem to point to Auron being disillusioned with Yevon for its complacency and moral bankruptcy than for the practices of faith and the effort of fighting against Sin/sin. Rikku too, despite being Al Bhed and routinely despised by Yevon, never actually feels a revulsion to Yevon's teachings but rather the way that people blithely accept others' sacrifice as a means to their own (temporary) happiness. I stress values and practices not because they're closely followed by everyone, but because Yevon's clergy doesn't fully assent to them themselves and feels free to delude the people. To me, that is the core conflict in FFX: dreams/hope VS nihilism/resignation.
In this regard, Mika is the most obvious perversion of religious authority in his cynicism toward the living and the very reality of death itself. How can you take him seriously about being reconciled to Spira's being full of death, when he himself doesn't fully die? Yunalesca, more than even Mika, is the living/undead symbol of a kind of nihilistic morality that Spira has succumbed to in the face of tremendous despair (i.e. Sin). Seymour represents the darkest consequence of that nihilism: someone who would actually annihilate Spira in the belief that it would liberate its people. Yu Yevon is the origin of Spira's woes, and is literally a shadow of his hatred for Bevelle and the desire to protect Zanarkand. It's a pretty stark commentary on the way that an inability to be moral and care about others can twist the collective moral compass, and how true faith and hope (as in Yuna/Tidus) offers a way forward.
Even though the Final Summoning is "false hope" and one that covered up Spira's suffering, the fayth themselves continue to be present. When you revisit the fayth in each temple, it kind of affirms that Yuna (and Tidus, in a way, through his connection to Bahamut) does in fact have some kind spiritual purpose in fighting Sin. Heck, even the way that Belgemine sticks around in spite of having failed to defeat Sin, seems to drive home that faith and belief is important in the world of Spira. It makes it difficult (at least for me) to believe that the substantive spirituality of Yevon and Spira doesn't matter. And while there's more I could say about what FFX ultimately teaches about religion in a more theological way (esp. through the talk of dreams and the fayth), I think I'll leave it there for now.

Okay, so I've touched on what the Guado do to keep the Farplane up and running here. While it's not mandatory to read, it does tie into this headcanon a little.
The Farplane became unstable shortly after Yuna sent Sin & the Aeons. The sheer amount of pyreflies from Sin alone caused the barrier that the Guado set up to stretch and become really thin, almost to the point of breaking. The Farplene wasn't designed to have that many souls sent to it at once. The Sending at Kilika? Fine, no problem. Operation Mi'ihen? Getting a bit risky there, but the Farplane could cope. Sending what is essentially a giant shell made out of hundreds of thounds (millions? billions?) of pyreflies? Nope, sorry, the Farplane can't handle that. Maybe if it had come in bursts, the Farplane might've been able to hold all of them, but not all at once. Maybe if the Guado had been there, knowing full well the Farplane was going to get a massive influx of pyreflies, they could've strengthened their barriers to ensure the Farplane could take it.
But it didn't come in bursts & the Guado weren't there. Which meant the Farplane got pretty unstable, pretty quickly.
The barrier they'd created couldn't keep up with the amount of pyreflies that was coming into it, and with nobody there to strengthen it, the barrier got stretched too thin. Small bursts of pyreflies would routinely start leaking out of the 6 'windows' and main entrance. The sheer amount of the pyreflies in the Farplane created an almost fog like haze, it would've been like the Zanarkand ruins in terms of memories popping up every 5 seconds, it would've affected people's memories akin to 'Sin's Toxin' level of forgetting, fiends run the risk of forming (and escaping) because the barrier's so thin. Thankfully someone noticed this was going on in the Guado's absence (as they'd already exiled themselves to Macalania by the end of X) and decided to seal of the Farplane in the interest of Spira's safety.
But that's not the end of it. X-2 rolls around, and Shuyin, being the little angry little shit that he is, decides to burrow tunnels from the Fayth statues to the Farplane, which releases a ton of the pyreflies and subsequently the fiends. Not only that, Vegnagun also escapes to the depths of the Farplane, absorbing quite a lot of energy from the Farplane itself via the pyreflies left within it. Both of these actions made the Farplane even more unstable.
The only silver lining to this (if you could even call it that), was that it meant the pyreflies that had been lingering since Sin's sending had a way to escape that wasn't through the barrier that the Guado put up. Shuyin's hatred is what corrupts the souls in the Farplane, as well as the Aeons, and causes them to overflow from the holes in the temples. The energy that Vegnagun absorbed also meant quite a lot of the pyreflies were absorbed in the process too. If the fiends had escaped from the entrance in Guadosalam, the filmy barrer that the Guado had created would've been torn, and pyreflies would've started spilling out. Guadosalam probably would've been turned into a mini Zanarkand, with the same lethality.
After the Guado move back into Guadosalam, one of the first things Tromell did was ensure the Farplane was completely stabalised. The remaining Guado (Tromell included) thankfully knew the sealing/barrier magics needed to restore the barriers around the entrance. It took a bit of time to do, considering how weak the magic had become around the entrance, but they manage to get it fully operational within a couple months. Yet, even once he was certain the problem had resolved itself, Tromell was still hesitant to let people in again, but eventually did so.

The perturbed look on her face clearly denied Seymour's advances. She much rather camp out in the Thunder Plains without a tent or her guardians. My FFX verse is simple.
Tatsumi.  Summoner.  Djose home temple.  Although I do go back and forth a little on making him Guado.... so in that case, Macalania is more obviously suited.  But something about Djose is very important to me here so that’s what’s keeping me out of it.
Hinata & Yuuta.  Al Bhed.  They’re going to be the absolute best blitzball players you’ve ever seen.
Souma.  Guardian definitely, but I haven’t decided if summoner Keito or Kanata.
Mayoi.  Mixed race Al Bhed.  Ask me what this means if I write anything about him & Tatsumi because whew.
Rei.  All you need to know is he is definitely, totally, soooo not unsent.  lingering regrets who

Closing the confessional behind her Yuna smooths out her skirt, folding both hands in her lap as she readies to confess her sins to the priest of macalania temple.
“Forgive me father, for I have sinned. It has been two weeks since my last confession…” Yuna. Takes a deep breath then expels.
“I…took pleasure in myself 5 times since last week, and again today. I would like to recite a prayer with you, if I may?”
Normally whenever he presented himself to relieve another temple priest, he assumed, much like his other fellow priests, did do without deep curiosity. Acceptance, verbal forgiveness, and a send the lower yevonite about their way. Comfort for citizens of unknown faces within a safe space.
This confession...
Heat flooded the maester's face, the prominent veins of his face turning an unsightly shade of bright purple. Twas not so much the confession, but the confessor. The soft, timid voice of Lady Yuna which touched his ears this time leaving him without breath and his resolution shaken.
Tumblr media
He should continue as always, but Yuna would surely in turn recognize his own voice. Their relationship need no more of a damper.
Without a word, Seymour exited his side of the enclosed space and signaled the closest priest to sit with the woman inside and pray. Too stunned for protest, the man merely nodded as the maester quickly disappeared.
Closing the curtain behind him, the new priest cleared his throat. "All is well, child. Let us pray."
