Are you a boy, are you a girl, or are you just human?

Merel is a boyish girl. Josha is a girly boy.

In the toilets of the local club, where a school party is in full swing, two young people discuss the influence of their gender on life and which category fits.

For decades, it seems that the traditional male/female thinking has come to an end. Yet, it is still unclear what gender or gender neutrality exactly is. What makes a boy a boy and a girl a girl? A performance about the role of gender, intimacy, and social expectations.

Back in 2017, Oostpool Weekend Nijmegen co-hosted "Gender,' a play inside a portable (that's a cargo crate for we USA impaired) with performers from Toneelgroep Oostpool with Theater Sonnevanck. I love it because Josha is amazing, as is Merel Pauw.

So it starts with Josha and Merel sitting outside, and suddenly, he kisses her. She gets weirded out because this isn't what friends do - and she's not into that at all. He reminds her that he saw her kissing a girl, why can't they just go to the prom as boyfriend and girlfriend? She doesn't want to be seen as a trophy - which is why he won't go in by himself because he needs (insert girl on arm) as a partner.

The ensuing discussion is funny and also serious as they change roles; she wants to show him the complications of how it is if she's the guy and he's the girl. He challenges her assumption that he needs make-up and girly clothes to feel pretty, even with his boy clothes, he's pretty. Maybe she just ain't got no game. This shocks her, and leads to a discussion about his experience with cross-dressing; he admits when younger his father caught him dressed up and in make-up, but his dad laughed it off as a joke.

IN HIS BACKPACK, Josha keeps a dress, and heels. 0__0

Merel convinces him to put it on; she finds him beautiful - but also hot in a masculine way. When he suggests she try it on, she refuses. She equates it to conforming, adhering to what society wants her to look like, and she's tired of being told what to wear to please a man. Being a 'tomboy' hadn't been easy, she gets rejected by boys and girls, but Josha didn't reject her. In fact, he gets her to put on the dress but hates how it makes her feel. This isn't what he wants at all - BUT ALSO - he wants to wear the dress.

Merel says to him: Imagine how much more relaxed we would be if we didn't have to spend the whole fucking time thinking about what gender expects of us? The stupid thing about gender is that it determines for us how we should be instead of how we really are.

She offers to put on his jacket, draw a mustache on herself, and go to prom with him if he wears the dress. They'll kiss on the dance floor, and it'll be amazing. Sadly, Josha won't do it (or will he??) - his dad would go apeshit. He heads home, leaving her behind with his bag. Left alone, she takes the women's heels out of his bag and puts them on; it's a disaster--she cannot walk in them as well as Josha did - they're HIS heels.
