Everything in the & 196 Video explained

A good place to start for learning 196 culture and understanding some of the stuff we mention is this video, made upon the end of 196, showcasing some of the biggest moments on the sub. Im gonna explain as many of these as possible. First, the history of 196. My source is a post I loosely remember from the person who made 195.

r/195 was a subreddit created by a few roomates living in apartment no. 195 to allow them to share memes easily and save stuff. They didn't set it to private and were suprised when they saw people starting to join. They decided to screw with them by creating the ONE GOLDEN RULE. You must post before you leave. They decided to do this as an experiment for 420 weeks (If I remember correctly.) Alot of fun was had and alot of 196s culture began here , such as Floppa and fanter. People were upset when the experiment ended, the sub had truly struck gold, so its permanent (or so we thought), sequel was created, 196. Its wortg considering, as what was basically an anarchy sub, why didnt it turn into a racist and himophobic shithole like the other ones? Its obviously dependent on the mods. The mods of most anarchy subs create them because they just want a place where they wont face consequences for saying terrible shit. 195 was different, and was moderated by more reasonable people. this is why 196 became the trans friendly space its known as today. Okay, onto the video.

Love of: The two 196 mascots, Floppa and Spronkus. These 2 will show up alot in this video. Spronkus was created in a meme comparing left and right shitposting, where the right is just a racist caricature and the left is "a popular recognisable cartoon character with a gun thay says trans rights and shoots fascits." It also has a gun thats labelled "this is a gun". Spronkus was, infact, not a recognisable cartoon character, but one created by the artist of the meme. It was named and became a 196 mascot, appearing in our r/place image.

The sun: alot of these images are just memes that did well on this sub and fit the lyrics. they explain themselves, theres no more culture to it, I wont mention them in the list from now on.

Came back again: The pillar wars. 196 had a lengthly battle over an image of different pillar types, where people would argue for their favourite pillar.

To make it clear that: When AI filters were just starting to pick up, someone ran their face through a masculinity filter many, many times, and this was the result.

Shame on a martyr: 197 is a place generally recognised as the place that people who liked 196 but got banned for being an asshole go. So its basically 196 but a little more right leaning.

Either perspective of &: First image of Bridget/ Biscuit/ Brisket/ Bucket. One meme where a guy mispelled bridget (Or was it someone who said one of their relatives kept mispronouncing it? Not really important either way) so it became a running joke of Spelling bridget incorrectly. I imagine this was elsewhere on the internet, not just 196.

Dry: Not sure if this is really a 196 culture thing, but its a common joke on 196 that there is nothing dryer than the pussy of Ben Shapiros wife.

& All the &s that we forgot: 196 was known for having microcelebrities, people that were easily recognisable in comments and people know their name. Most notable is Goblinhog, who became a moderator, but the rapid expansion of microcelebs came with monko74 who became one. Alot of people started signing their posts/ comments in a certain way to make them more recognisable.

Leave if you can't stand the thought of it: Not alot to it, 196 mods made the based decision to ban any and all people using the reddit NFT avatars.

New & Old: The new and old images for the sub. Everytime the image changed, it would replace the old one, they would all still be partially transparent. First was that rabbit, then a globe thing was added. The mods did a random choice of who would get to choose the new sub image for a month, and the winner chose a picture of that guy you can faintly see in the new image. It was changed back to the old image and the guy was added at the end of the month. Spronkus also temporarily became the sub icon, before it was added to the full image.

John & Yoko: A heavily edited version of a comic that was used as a frequent meme template on 196. The original joke is that 2 guys and a girl meet their future selves, and one of the guys is suprised to find his future self as a woman.

They took a lesson from their fathers: Explained by the 196 history at the start

Their lives stuck beside every &: The yoshi and toad kissing tattoo was a like goal thing if I remember correctly, "If I get this many likes Ill do this" and they did it. Either that or it was a goal for the sub itself.

Stop the peace: When 196 was at a perceived low point, and Sprokus was on the rise, people came to the conclusion that 196 just wasn't as Gay as it used to be, and it needed to be fixed.

We digress: There was a post (Dont think it was on 196) of a 4 panel comic thats supposed to be something about women moving on from heartbreak or something but the 4th panel was replaced with an image of a shitting toothpaste. Someone commented to ask for the version without the toothpaste and this comment and post was screenshotted and became popular on 196. When the no toothpaste version was posted, the same person asked for a version with the toothpaste. It was a common joke for a while for people to replace the fourth panels, or other panels, of other comics with the toothpaste. This is an amogus version of it. That should be everything, please reblog if Ive missed stuff.

History lesson

In the beginning there was r/195. Initially it was started as a way for like 3 roommates to share memes with each other. Their apartment number? 195.

As with any shitposting subreddit people find it and they shitpost. It grew semi-quickly because of its one rule, you have to post something before you leave.

Naturally there are more secret rules. This is obvious as reddit has some guidlines they like to keep, but the guy who made the subreddit from the beginning also removed things he didn't like. What's important is that they deleted a lot of bigotry. The result of him removing things was of course death threats.

Eventually the threats became too much, it was one person dealing with a hoard of edgy 15 year olds mad that their bigotry was being deleted. The apartments lease already passed so while a new community grew around this subreddit, he decided to hang it up. After a couple hundred days, the expirement ended. 195 was closed.

The community moves next door, to 196. The apartment of awesome.

The decisions those initial creators had stuck with this community, you have to post after scrolling before you leave. The community was already shappen though, the initial creator didn't like bigotry and the likes so that stuck with the new mod team.

During this time of course there's discorse. Wasp discorse, pillar discord, british people discorse. But there was never discorse about lgbtq+. It was common for a while to have posts about kicking terfs out of 196, only for there to be discorse about posting those images for karma farming.

Because of all this, that small preference from an initial guy, 196 was just a safe space for trans and nb and anyone else really (except british people, i think one person got doxxed for being british). Soon enough it just became the spot for them. Trans people attract trans people.

There's a whole lot more that could be added. The cake fucker, the fruit fucker, the pasta fucker (All one person by the way). The love of bridget from guilty gear and the slow brain rot of remembering her name (brisket, bronco, bringo). And lets not forget floppa friday.

In the end the mods decided to private it for now. They use mod tools that will probably break and a lot of problems are going to come out of new API changes from reddit so half the website went dark. The site is basically unusable for what I would check on it with all the subreddits down.

It was nice watching the evolution of 196. I was there from the start and I watched as it became gayer and gayer. I never really posted either (which was against the rule), nor am I trans/gay/secret thing. I'm a straight white male and seeing all the little gay people in my phone find and accept themselves for who they are made me very joyful. It also helped change my thinking to make sure I dont do anything bigoted while out in public.

hi this is for @scrimblocatalogue but you can read if you like tmcblr. otherwise this is not a place of honor no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here etc etc.

silliness under the cut

- okay so there was some silly stuff. gay accusations for the nephew, the whole floppa thing, chewing on wires that made the tech store burn down, all that fun stuff. mostly just a silly goofy guy

- friend dies. he attempts to go help her ghost and, in the process, separates his soul from his body and becomes a sort of medium. and he falls into the hands of a system. so he’s essentially remotely piloting his own body and waking up in this void place, known as Nothing, whenever she sleeps

- said dead friend ends up trying to attack him, killing someone else in the process. racked with guilt he decides to hide out for a bit but ends up being followed by the alternate tormenting his other friend (johnson)

- this causes him to be trapped for three days, before, in an attempt to escape, being physically torn apart and buried. while he’s dead, an alternate of him is created, and torments another friend of his

- the aforementioned system tries to repair him, merging him with some of the ghosts and his own technology in order to bring him back to life. this, of course, is extremely unstable, and shortly after killing the alternate of himself, he starts merging with it as well. this turns him into a partial alt and he ends up attacking lamb 

- the system resets him after this fight, trapping him in a new form. not too long after this, he’s once again tricked by johnson, who manipulates him into agreeing to go forward with one of the system’s commands in order to be human

- this. uh. doesn’t work he gets the alternate ripped out of his body and he dies there. in his friends arms. lmao

- another mod brings him back as a ghost, leaving him completely drained and unable to communicate much with anyone. after a while spent like this, he goes to the gods to bargain for his life back. they agree but end up giving him a bunch of curses 

- when he comes back he realizes. that they literally just put him back in his torn-up corpse. he stumbles back to his friend and collapses there

- there’s some messing around for a while and then the system is like well wait a second. this isn’t how the story is supposed to go. i need to fix this myself so it tries to erase the memory of it from dave

- this partly works, because while the memory IS erased he breaks the system while doing it. so now the system is just really pissed at this guy that doesn’t even remember it exists. also it’s starting to self destruct and it knows it needs to be present to salvage the story

- so it does the most logical thing, which is to. slowly possess them. and it works and now there’s this weird supercomputer thing possessing thatcher’s friend. and the longer it spends in his body the more fucked up she gets 

- this of course leads to possessed dave and thatcher fighting, and thatcher manages to win by (checks notes) ripping wires out of his best friend’s back! it does work in the end even if it is a gory mess

- system shuts down and Nothing crumbles down on itself, and we don’t hear from system for a while after that. it’s presumed dead

- so yay! he’s in control again there isn’t anything controlling him against his will. downside is that she’s now frighteningly aware of their place in the narrative but this is never touched on. staying silly

- a lot of the stuff after this is mostly fun filler stuff. baking project gone wrong that dave ends up treating as his son (this cookie thing has been locked in a closet until the end of time), hanging out with the dead god friend (average activity), constant threats on his life, british adam murray accidentally calls him a slur (one of my favorites), dave gets turned into an alternate again for a couple days and speaks in homestuck (one of his cats and johnson does this to him), etc

- everything after this is just nonstop insane btw so buckle up

- uhhh after a while it becomes apparent that oh shit! the corpse thing was actually kind of a big deal. he’s slowly rotting now. whoops

- this gets REALLY BAD and eventually he kind of. sort of. gets to the point where he’s nearly dead but the divine intervention bullshit manages to get him back to semi-normal. also johnson tries to stab out her other eye while he’s unconscious during the repair thing but he fucks off. so now dave’s fine. kind of. surely this will not be a permanent cycle of decay and repair that he goes through for the rest of his life

- shortly afterwards he gets told to come to the church! the one place he has tried to avoid for years due to past experiences! this will certainly not traumatize him further

- it does. meets gabriel for the first time (and gabriel lore is different in this, even if he did still create alternates), calls him a coward, gets another part of his face torn off. you know how it is

- archive is a little broken right now but there’s just some hurt/comfort stuff for a bit. it’s pretty nice actually thatcher and dave interactions make me so ill i sob and cry and die forever. also they watch sharknado together and now he thinks it’s a real documentary 

- uhhh mark gets. sort of kidnapped? it’s hard to explain - by an alternate and dave decides to go help him. this ends up with him facing off another alternate but somehow. he manages to mess with the alternate instead. now i found this kind of funny but something something picking up the habits of the person you hate and using them against other people. or something cause angst only works on tumblr user bonkcreat

- something silly happens after this. but when doesn’t it. anyways remember when i said system was probably dead. i was lying. it’s now stuck in Something (opposite of Nothing. Nothing was this void realm Something is like sensory overload the place) and is trying to reach out again

- it works. and dave goes into it and oh boy! what did you expect it’s the goddamn system again. it tries to get him to hand over control again but something happens with the realm registering him and it practically. spits her back out LMAO

- of course the whole. distortion realm thing messes her up a bit and now he’s some weird radiation spiral angel thing. for a bit. not too long. this happens every day. that wears off pretty fast but during that time he touched the weird missing texture thing that scrambled two of his friends and gets kind of birded. what am i even saying

- uhhhh fun stuff! thatcher dave and ruth interactions, he makes the best of the whole. bird situation which ended today (sort of. you saw the comic), and things are mostly fine. 

- also there’s stuff going on with. johnson right now but dave hasn’t been tied into that lore yet so that’s for another time

anyways. that’s only one half of the bullshit i’ve been doing for several months. love this gay ass roleplay and i hate it with a passion. i’m so ill okay goodbye

The Big Floppa of Giarre

Visited my mum yesterday to sort out photos to send to a roofer/repairer for a quote to fix up water damage to her investment property.  A visit is never a simple drop by exercise.  The custom is prepare yourself for a few hours to wizz by and to be inundated with stories of the glory days of Mum’s past beaus and possible suitors.  Just one glance and she was marriage material, but all became fruitless due to controlling family members or just her plain distain of certain individuals.  Arranged marriages, short engagements, seeking approval and permission from parents was all the rage in Sicily in the 50 and 60′s.  You could even marry someone already in Australia or America whilst still in Sicily, proxy brides.  None of this getting to know one another prior.  I suppose you can debate whether or not this works but there is no denying that it does and it is something still present in many cultures today.  Anyway I kinda get sick of those stories.   I hear the same ones over and over.  However yesterday there was a change in course for storytelling with something finally new and not so depressing.  I’ve been raised by depressing stories. Its in my DNA which maybe  explains my preference for depressing songs.....

Back to the Big Floppa of Giarre.  The big floppar by the way isn’t a person or what ever one may insinuate. It was actually a pleasant discussion about our last visit to Sicily in 1998.  Mum and Dad had arrived in Sicily about a month earlier than us.  They were both staying with my great Aunty initially.  My great Aunt all welcoming and controlling.  Happy they were there, however complained about their water usage.  It was getting to the stage in which mum tried in vain to wash their clothes in the dead of night.   Only to find her standing behind keeping a watchful eye on how much water was heading down the drain.  It all got a bit too much.  So she rang back to Australia, got my brother to chase up a friend who owns a property available for holiday rental in Riposto.  So my brother got the details from Rita, called back claiming that he was just checking in on the travellers, whilst passing on the details of the new accommodation plans.  A second language comes in handy in many situations.  Directions were given to collect the keys from a jeweller shop in Giarre.

So my parents make their way to Giarre, completely forgetting the siesta spell, which meant a few hours sitting in a shaded pedestrian seat.  Finally after the lunchtime curfew they approached the shop and they were greeted by an enormous cat on a leash.  I question mum at this stage of our conversation, “What a big fat Ginger cat?”, making the assumption that it was something like Garfield, too much lasagna...yada yada....  No mum replied, this cat was furious it growled it would put a guard dog to shame.  Immediately my mind whirled to an instagram video my son showed me of a Lynx called Big Floppa which has a huge following.   (Especially the video in which the Lynx has a go at a lawnmower.  Wild cats and modern devices recipe for disaster in my books. )  “ Mum its not a domestic cat”, quickly googling a photo on my phone.  “Did it look like this?” “ Yes! “

 Wow that jeweller was way ahead...a Lynx for a pet who needs security cameras etc.  Can also understand how Rita felt at ease keeping her keys at a Jeweler instead of a run of the mill real estate agent.  Now this was a story that piqued my interest.

Above the internet sensation.

The place at Riposto was amazing, void of any mod cons.  Made from Basalt from the volcano and rendered, wrought iron front door entrance which lead to a staircase with rooms upstairs, faded frescos on the high ceilings. All of this made up for the shit plumbing. So showering was under a trickle of water, no dishwasher or washing machine.  This was done in the outside tub hence less water usage which would of impressed my Great Aunt.....  I would definitely stay there again however I know the meeting with Big Floppa would never eventuate as he would be long gone.
