Gente 1868-1872: Enslaved persons held by Felipe Yturrino y Arzua
New post! Saying the names of enslaved ancestors in Anasco, 1868-1872.
Events on the way to freedom In my recent blog post Yturrino: A collateral line, I had questions about what kind of business Felipe Iturrino Arzua (1811 -1894) of Anasco was in. While I was able to follow some notary documents that described a  string of land purchases in different municipalities, it really wasn’t clear what he had invested in.  These land purchases now make more sense after…

Hello Mr Gaiman, are you aware that a French publisher was arrested today upon arrival to London for the book fair and is currently being held without a lawyer on suspicion of terrorism because he participated in the protests in France? As a French writer and union representative for writers, but mostly as a French citizen, I am absolutly outraged at what is obviously a threat to our right to protest and an attempt to intimidate the movement into submission. I'd understand if you'd rather not get into that but as a writer with a lot of influence worldwide, your support would be much appreciated (if anything, to spread awareness of the situation abroad).
Thanks a lot for your work in general, it has been and always will be a source of inspiration for me.
Kind regards,
Jolan Bertrand
I wasn't aware, no. But I googled and was astonished. Invoking terrorism laws against lawful protesters is a scary thing to do.

A French publisher who was arrested in London on terrorism charges has been awarded “substantial” damages by the Metropolitan police, as new figures reveal thousands of foreign nationals have been stopped at UK ports under anti-terror laws. Ernest Moret, 29, a foreign rights manager for Éditions la Fabrique, was detained at St Pancras station in April last year on his way to the London book fair. He was held under section 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, and questioned by counter-terrorist officers about whether he had taken part in anti-government demonstrations in France and if he backed the French president, Emmanuel Macron. Moret’s mobile phone and laptop were also confiscated for several weeks, before being returned to him after police decided to take no further action. The police also admitted downloading Moret’s sim card before returning his phone.
[...]
The figures have deepened concerns that police are using counter-terrorism powers to target political activists. Kevin Blowe, campaigns coordinator at the police monitoring group Netpol, said the figures were “genuinely alarming”. He said: “We know these powers are used for purposes other than investigating terrorism, including the targeting of political activists visiting Britain. “The data does suggest that EU states are seeking the active help of British police to target their own citizens too, although state surveillance is so lacking in transparency and accountability that this is almost impossible to confirm. “Schedule 7 is discriminatory and draconian, it undermines civil rights and criminalises communities and political dissent. Like so many other counter-terrorism powers put in place a decade ago by the last Labour government, it is something that we would all be better off without.”

Met police criticised for using anti-terror laws to arrest French publisher on way to London Book Fair
Protests held after Ernest Moret apparently told alleged involvement in demonstrations against Emmanuel Macron’s pension age reform was behind detention at St Pancras
Tumblr media
by Josh Salisbury
A leading French publisher has been bailed after anti-terror laws were used to arrest him as he arrived in London.
Ernest Moret, a foreign rights manager with French publisher Editions La Fabrique, was stopped by officers at St Pancras on Monday.
He had been on his way to the London Book Fair at Kensington Olympia, which is scheduled to include an address by the Ukrainian president’s wife, Olena Zelenska.
According to a joint statement released by his publisher and left-wing book publisher, Verso Books, Mr Moret was stopped by police under counter-terror laws on Monday at St Pancras to “determine whether he was engaged in terrorist acts or in possession of material for use in terrorism”.
His employer claimed he was stopped over his alleged involvement in French pension age protests. They also alleged that he was then arrested after refusing to give up passcodes to his phone.

Olympic Hospitality: IOC President Welcomed at the Swiss Parliament
At the Swiss National Council, the President received a standing ovation from all the members. The President was also attending a session of the Swiss Council of States where he was welcomed by its President, Hans Stöckli.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Hospitality fans can book Olympic Hospitality Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
During a lunch hosted by Isabelle Moret, he met the following members of the National Council: Laurent Wehrli, the Mayor of Montreux; Rocco Cattaneo, who is also Vice President of the UCI World Cycling Centre Foundation Board and a member of the UCI Management Committee; and Mathias Reynard, Co-President of the Parliamentary Intergroup on childhood and youth.
Tumblr media
Together they discussed the excellent relations between Switzerland, the Canton of Vaud, Lausanne and the IOC, Tokyo Olympic Agenda, the development of sport, the sustainability of the Olympic Games and the importance of education through sport, as well as the upcoming Winter Youth Olympic 2020 Games Lausanne, which are, for Isabelle Moret, “encouragement for our young people to become better and better and to just have fun while practicing sport”.
President Thomas Bach reiterated the importance of consolidation of the authority and truthfulness of sport in order to safeguard the Olympic values and the power of sport as a vehicle for peace. Speaking at the General Conference of the International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), he urged governments to join the global fight against corruption in sport. “We are a values-based organization.
We stand for the values of excellence, respect, and fair play. In this sense, we have the double duty to uphold good governance and integrity in everything we do,” said the IOC President. We know we cannot win this fight on our own. We need the support of governments when it comes to anti-corruption legislation and law enforcement. This is why IPACS is so important.
Tumblr media
The President addressed more than 250 representatives from governments, intergovernmental organizations, international sports organizations, and dedicated expert organizations. He presented the initiatives the IOC has taken as part of the Tokyo Olympic Agenda reform program to strengthen the credibility and integrity of the sport.
To the representatives of more than 50 governments attending the meeting, he said: “With IPACS, we now have a platform where we can benefit from your law enforcement capacity. And likewise, through IPACS, we can support you, the government and law enforcement authorities, with regard to investigating criminal activity in a very specific environment of sport. In this way, we can mutually benefit from each other’s expertise and we can complement our respective areas of responsibilities.”
Olympic 2020 supporters can get Olympic Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. OlympicTickets2020.com is the most consistent source to book Olympic Packages.

Tumblr media
Gary Morton (Emcee) was a comedian who worked the famed ‘Borscht Belt’ in the Catskills Mountains. He met Lucille Ball shortly after her divorce from Desi Arnaz and they married in November 1961. At her request, Morton gave up his nightclub career and became a producer of “The Lucy Show.” Morton also served as a warm-up comic for the show’s studio audience. In early episodes of the series, his loud guffaw can be heard on the laugh track. He will make three appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” Morton passed away in 1999.
Tumblr media
Jack Collins (Ernie Williams) appeared with Sid Caesar on a 1953 episode of “Texaco Star Theatre” starring Milton Berle. He will also make six appearances on “Here's Lucy.”
Williams and Mr. Mooney are old college fraternity brothers.
Tumblr media
Sid Gould (Waiter) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton.
Don Anderson (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) will also make three appearances on “Here's Lucy.”
George DeNormand (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) appeared in three films with Lucille Ball from 1937 to 1963. This is the just one of his many appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”
Monty O'Grady (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) was first seen with Lucille Ball in The Long, Long Trailer (1953) and played a passenger on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14). He was a traveler at the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan”(1959). He made a dozen appearances on the series and a half dozen more on “Here’s Lucy.”
James Gonzales (Ceremony Guest, uncredited) was a popular Hollywood extra who first acted with Lucille Ball in the 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer. He was previously seen on the series as Stan Williams in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (S1;E2). He was seen in more than 20 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 3 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
The other ceremony guests and diners at the club restaurant go uncredited as does the quartet of male singers at the ceremony.

This is the end of season 6 and the final episode of the series.  The season ended with a 27 share and the show was #2 in the ratings. In addition to 156 regular half hour episodes, there was one hour-long prime time special titled “Lucy in London” (1967). This represents 79 hours of television!
Only Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael) appeared in all 156 episodes
Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney) did 111
Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley / Bunson) did 81
Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) did 55
Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) did 44
Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael) and Mary Jane Croft (Audrey / Mary Jane Lewis) tied with 39
Of the background players, Sid Gould appeared in nearly 50 episodes, although not always credited. Also frequently employed were James Gonzales, George DeNormand, Monty O'Grady, Hazel Pierce, and Bennett Green. Of those mentioned, the actor with the greatest longevity on the series is James Gonzales, who was in episode 2 of season 1 and this final episode. Lucy's friends and favorites like Mary Wickes and Carole Cook were also heavily featured in character roles. Nepotism was never a problem for Lucy, who employed Lucie (daughter),  Desi Jr. (son), Gary Morton (husband), Sid Gould (cousin-in-law), Vanda Barra (cousin-in-law), and Cleo Smith (cousin) behind the scenes. During its six seasons on the air, “The Lucy Show” employed more than 450 actors and countless crew and technical staff.  The series was only supposed to last long enough to get Desilu out of financial difficulty. However, Lucille Ball found the work fulfilling and continued for six seasons.
Tumblr media
This final installment was filmed on February 1, 1968. Lucille Ball had sold Desilu (and along with it, the format for “The Lucy Show”) to Gulf & Western / Paramount, and she did not wish to continue to produce a show that she no longer owned. She was also looking to work with her daughter Lucie as well as her son Desi Jr. Lucille Ball Productions (LBP) will return in September 1968 with a revamped series titled “Here's Lucy.” It will still feature Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon (as her employer) and be set in Southern California.
Tumblr media
Airing immediately after “Lucy” on March 11, 1968 “The Andy Griffith Show” broadcast an episode featuring Ken Berry as Sam Jones. Ken Berry was Lucille Ball's protégé and a recent guest star on the series. Like “The Lucy Show” “The Andy Griffith Show” (filmed at Desilu / Paramount) will also be re-formatted and return in the fall of 1968 under a new title: “Mayberry R.F.D.” starring Ken Berry.

The Boss of the Year Award is sponsored by the Businessman's Club.
Tumblr media
Lucy Carter wears the same flowing pastel gown that she wore to the 19th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on June 4, 1967. She won for Leading Actress in a Comedy Series.
Mr. Mooney and Ernie were members of Alpha Beta Gamma fraternity. Their favorite college drink was sloe gin and root beer (neat).
Mr. Mooney met his wife in college on a blind date. She was a shot putter with a butch haircut and buck teeth. Her maiden name was Klottendorf. Mr. Mooney fails to use her first name, which was previously Irma. The character remained off screen for the entire series. The various horrific descriptions of her were a running gag on the series.
Tumblr media
The episode employs a voice-over of Mr. Mooney writing the letter recommending Mr. Cheever for the award.  This type of thing has never been done on “The Lucy Show” in the past. While he writes under the watchful eye of Abraham Lincoln, the underscoring plays “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Mr. Mooney absentmindedly calls Mary Jane 'Baby Jane.'  The previous episode guest starred Joan Crawford, star of the film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962).
Mary Jane suggests Lucy literally sing Mr. Mooney's praises instead of write them in a letter. Lucy facetiously suggests “I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'” a song written by George Gershwin for the 1934 folk opera Porgy and Bess. Mary Jane comes up with some more positive suggestions:
“Who's Wonderful?  Who's Marvelous?  Mr. Mooney!” aka “Miss Annabel Lee” written by Sidney Clare, Lew Pollack, and Harry Richman in 1927.
“When the Mooney Comes Over the Mountain” aka “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain” written in 1931 by Howard Johnson, Harry M. Woods, and Kate Smith.
“Mooney! How I Love Ya!  How I Love Ya!” aka “Swanee” written in 1919 by George Gershwin and Irving Caesar for Al Jolson.
“I'm in Love With Mr....Mooney” aka “Honey (I'm in Love With You)” written in 1928 by Richard A. Whiting, Seymour Simons, and Haven Gillespie. The song was sung by by Desi Arnaz in “Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation” (ILL S3;E22).
“Mooney and Roses” aka “Moonlight and Roses” by Edwin Lamare with lyrics by Ben Black and Neil Moret.
“Mooney River” aka “Moon River” composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer for 1961 for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. It won the Oscar for Best Song.
Tumblr media
When the scene opens at the Boss of the Year Awards dinner, couples are dancing to “Spanish Eyes” sung by a unidentified and uncredited male close-harmony quartet. The orchestra plays “Mama Ines” a 1931 song by Cuban composer Eliseo Grenet Sánchez popularized by Xaviar Cugat and sung by Desi Arnaz in “The Freezer” (ILL S1;E29). This is likely at tribute to Arnaz, who served as Executive Producer of “The Lucy Show” for the first half of Season 1.
During the ceremony Lucy performs:
“76 Big Loans” aka "76 Trombones" written by Meredith Willson for the 1957 Broadway musical The Music Man, which was filmed in 1962.
"Thanks For the Memory" by Ralph Rainger and new lyrics by Leo Robin. This was the theme song of Lucy's movie co-star Bob Hope.
Tumblr media
Although there is a ray of hope that Mr. Mooney will earn a promotion to a San Francisco branch of the Westland Bank, the idea is shot down at the last moment by Mr. Cheever's desire to keep Lucy and Mr. Mooney together. This final scene of Lucy honoring Mr. Mooney is fitting since Lucille Ball had been trying since 1951 to re-team with Gale Gordon, who first starred in her successful radio show “My Favorite Husband.”  He was wanted for the role of Fred Mertz but was unavailable. In 1962 Lucy wanted him to play her banker on “The Lucy Show” but he was still under contract to “Dennis the Menace.” When that show was canceled, she was finally able to create a role for him, writing out banker Barnsdahl (Charles Lane) and replacing him with banker Mooney. Gordon would become her sidekick after Vivian Vance departed the series.  This boss / employee relationship will continue on “Here's Lucy” in just six months time.
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Time Flies! The finale of the installment, a musical number by Lucy saluting Mr. Mooney, refers to Lucy having worked for Mooney for six years. Lucy Carmichael has actually worked for Mr. Mooney only since October 1965, less than three years.
Decorating! To serve the plot, the abstract skyline painting behind Mr. Mooney's desk has been replaced by a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. In two previous episodes, it was replaced (also for plot purposes) by a portrait of George Washington. The office has further been modified with bolt locks on both doors and a framed photo of Mr. Cheever (Roy Roberts) on Mr. Mooney's desk.
Tumblr media
By Any Other Name! Mr. Cheever's first name is back to being Winfield. In “Lucy and the Starmaker” (S6;E4) Winfield was stated to be his middle name.  In “Little Old Lucy” (S6;E7) Mr. Mooney called him Harrison, which would also be Gale Gordon's character name on “Here's Lucy.”

Why Phil Kelly Must Die.
Tumblr media
Kill Phil_1_by_Tauman942
MY RESPONSE TO THE PHIL KELLY CONTROVERSY: WHY HE MUST DIE The following is a response to the numerous questions I’ve been asked about my reaction to Phil Kelly’s newly published “Crisis of Faith”. However let me preface this with a little data about myself. I’ve been playing Warhammer 40k since 2004 and writing Tau related fiction since 2011. Since 2010 I’ve been posting on the Advanced Tau Tactica (A.T.T.) forum website, where I have been complying all the known canonical Tau words and phrases, as well as expanding the Tau lexicon with new words created by myself and other fans of the Tau. All of this has been collected in the The Expanded Tau Lexicon posted on the A.T.T. forum. http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23062
In a discussion thread on the A.T.T. forum for then yet to be published Phil Kelly novel, “Crisis of Faith” I posted a response. This is a condensed version of that post. Here is link to that thread: http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25427 A.T.T. FORUM FARSIGHT: CRISIS OF FAITH - New Farsight novel in July TauMan April 7th 2017 I have posted on other threads my opinion on anything produced by Black Library; but I'll repeat it here so everyone knows where I'm coming from.
It's doesn't matter it is a novel, short story; or whether or not I agree with the direction the author(s) takes. Even if I hate all of it, the story, plot, and characters. None of that matters, if the story is well written, if it has a good plot, and it has great character development. And one more thing, if that work doesn't break the basic law of all creative writing: "The willing suspension of disbelief." And lastly, the author(s) have to show a basic command of the English language; with the writing displaying good grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Unfortunately, as a rule Phil Kelly's stories are a straight up "FAIL", in all of these categories. His stories have unrealistic plots (even by space opera standards), improbable plot twists, weirdly drawn characters; and unfathomable actions taken by same characters. These action often contradicting, whatever he established earlier in the novel. Worse yet, as one of Games Workshop "Old Timers"; he seems to have at best a "sketchy" command of the WH40k lore. Next is his misuse of the Tau language. He even messes up the very few canonical Tau words that were previously published in the codices and novels. Finally, most of his writing is full of tortured sentences, bad grammar, and misspelled words.   I could use a lot more colourful language, to describe the atrocities committed against the English language by Phil Kelly; but I know others will do that for me. (And they'll be far more brutal than I would ever be!) However, a wise man once said, "If you see a problem, don't just complain about it. Be ready to offer a solution."  Here's my main point: That as Tau players and fans of the Warhammer 40K universe, we deserve better.
PHIL KELLY’S ARTICLE Then on the Warhammer Community website Phil Kelly published a response to queries about his upcoming novel. Here is a link to that novel. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/06/28/farsight-the-author-speaks/
A.T.T. FORUM Farisght: Crisis of Faith - New Farsight novel in July TauMan June 30th 2017
Then after I read Phil Kelly’s article
I read the article of Phil Kelly on the Warhammer Community website and then had to walk away from the computer, just so I wouldn't punch a fist through my monitor!  Then I had dinner, watched the PBS News hour, and then spent an hour making anti-Phil Kelly memes. All before I could calm down enough to just post here! I don't care that he's a GW old timer, the man should never be allowed to publish anything for Black Library. That piece of non-fiction dribble that was on the link is proof enough, what with the over use of the asterix "*" and his childish remarks. He's like a twelve years old who's failed his 6th grade English class the way he writes. And his middle school snarky attitude concerning Tau lore, it's like he's thumbing his nose at the fans. All of this is coming from a man who had Shadowsun surfing on the back of a Thunderhawk. I seriously don't think Phil Kelly has ever spent more than two consecutive minutes thinking about Tau culture. And I can say without reservation that there is on the Advanced Tau Tactica, at least one young writer (he's fourteen year old), who writes better Tau stories than Phil Kelly! This young man's stories are better thought out, have better characters, better plots, and better developed Tau culture. Basically better than anything than Phil Kelly has ever written. Phil Kelly on the other hand writes one dimensional stories and characters that are worthy of an eight to ten year old kid; and that's really an insult to eight to ten year old kids!
This is what Phil Kelly should be writing for, to bad it's off the air!
Tumblr media
PHIL KELLY’S CRIMES: THE INDICTMENT Since then the horror continues and we have one Phil Kelly atrocity after another. Here is more concise list of Phil Kelly’s crimes against the Tau.
A disrespectful attitude towards Tau fans specifically, but towards all WH40k fans in general
A cavalier attitude towards established Tau lore. (Tau have blue blue blood as established in the first Tau novel, Fire Warrior by Simon Spurrier)
A woeful ignorance of WH40k lore in general
An almost aggressive (passive aggressive?) disregard for the work of other Black Library authors. This especially true for almost any other BL author’s work as the concerns the Tau (though not exclusively) White Scars fans what do you think?
Character who are so simplified that they are no longer two-dimensional characters, but really one dimensional. Known as the “He-man Masters of the Universe school of character creation: ‘For Castle Grayskull!’”
A mental defect so profound that he cannot conceive of an alien race like the Tau, as being anything but “blue humans with hooves”.
Disregard for the basic standby of all story telling, “the willing suspension of disbelief”. Even by the conventions of space opera Phil Kelly’s plot devices are too outlandish to be believed. Example: Shadowsun surfing on the back of a Thunderhawk. Example: Water caste diplomat being possessed by a daemon and becoming a serial killer Example: Farsight defeats the Adeptus Mechanicum by flooding Vior’la with lava? Now that’s straight up He-Man Masters of the Universe!
More serious crime specific to “Farsight: Crisis of Faith” Its nothing moret than a “dog’s breakfast” of a plot line; which has Farsight as the new Warmaster Horus in what must be called, “The Horus Heresy Lite”. Really is this best BL and GW can do but regurgitate the Horus Heresy onto the Tau?
A grim dark Tau that has nothing to with the real grim dark side of the Tau, as previously portrayed in other BL novels. (READ: Fire Warrior by Simon Spurrier)
Plain and simple Phil Kelly lacks any kind of original creative thinking. Chaos as the one only plot device for all story lines? (To be fair this is a flaw to a lot of BL and GW authors).
And for this and crimes against the English language (including spelling and grammar) Phil Kelly must die.

Facing a wave of opposition, Amazon reconsiders New York headquarters site, two officials say
Amazon.com is reconsidering its plan to bring 25,000 jobs to a new campus in New York City following a wave of opposition from local politicians, according to two people familiar with the company’s thinking.
The company has not leased or purchased office space for the project, making it easy to withdraw its commitment. Unlike in Virginia — where elected leaders quickly passed an incentive package for a separate headquarters facility — final approval from New York state is not expected until 2020.
Tennessee officials have also embraced Amazon’s plans to bring 5,000 jobs to Nashville, which this week approved US$15.2 million in road, sewer and other improvements related to that project.
Amazon’s HQ2 locations show just how far the suburbs have come
Amazon officially announces it’s splitting HQ2, with one in New York and the other in Virginia
‘They’ve duped all of us’: Amazon’s multiple HQ2s move it closer to its destiny as the everything company
Amazon executives have had internal discussions recently to reassess the situation in New York and explore alternatives, said the two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly about the company’s perspective.
“The question is whether it’s worth it if the politicians in New York don’t want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming,” said one person familiar with the company’s plans.
Hailed as an economic triumph when it was announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, the project in the Long Island City neighbourhood of Queens now faces withering criticism from some politicians and advocacy groups appalled at the prospect of giving giant subsidies to the world’s most valuable company, led by its richest man. (Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos also owns The Washington Post.)
In the past two weeks, the state Senate nominated an outspoken Amazon critic to a board where he could potentially veto the deal. City Council members for the second time aggressively challenged company executives at a hearing where activists booed and unfurled anti-Amazon banners.
Key officials, including freshman U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., whose district borders the proposed Amazon site, have rallied against the project. And opponents went door-to-door to warn people in Queens of looming rent hikes and displacement, much as Seattle experienced during the company’s explosive growth there.
Key officials, including freshman U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose district borders the proposed Amazon site, have rallied against the project.
No specific plans to abandon New York have been made. And it is possible that Amazon would try to use a threat to withdraw to put pressure on New York officials. But with a meeting of the state’s Public Authorities Control Board and a third City Council hearing expected later this month, Amazon executives may be reaching an inflection point, the people said.
“I think now is the time for Amazon to make a decision because it has to start hiring,” said one person. “At some point, the project starts to fall behind.”
The resistance in New York contrasts with the warm welcome Amazon has received in Virginia, where Gov. Ralph Northam, D, signed a law on Tuesday authorizing up to US$750 million in state subsidies for the Arlington headquarters.
Northam and Virginia’s other top two state officials, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring, all Democrats, have been engulfed in recent days by scandals involving years-old behaviour. But the two people familiar with Amazon’s plans said company leadership is not concerned those controversies will hamper their project.
It’s unclear what Amazon might consider as a Plan B if the New York project falls through. It could forgo the incentive package and hire employees on a smaller scale, as competitors including Google are already doing. Or Amazon could search for another jurisdiction to get some or all of the jobs originally slated for New York.
“We always welcome more great jobs to the commonwealth,” said Stephen Moret, chief executive of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the state’s top Amazon negotiator.
Amazon has hired a lobbying firm and a public relations firm in New York and recently advertised for a “senior community affairs manager” to “focus on developing a positive partnership with local stakeholders, community groups and nonprofits.”
Asked to comment on the possibility that the New York deal might founder, Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth said: “We’re focused on engaging with our new neighbours — small business owners, educators, and community leaders. Whether it’s building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbour we will be.”
Protestors attend a New York City Council Finance Committee hearing titled ‘Amazon HQ2 Stage 2: Does the Amazon Deal Deliver for New York City Residents?’ at New York City Hall, January 30, 2019, in New York City.
New York state and city officials have played down the chances that the deal will fall through. They pointed to opinion polls showing strong public support for the project and said Cuomo and de Blasio will fight hard for it.
“The Amazon transaction was probably the greatest economic transaction in 50 years in this state,” Cuomo said in a recent radio interview. “We don’t get a business to come with 25,000 jobs anymore. I spend hours and days trying to get 100 jobs, 200 jobs.”
But the resistance is well organized and energetic, based in unions and community groups. In addition to Ocasio-Cortez, opponents include City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Deputy Leader of the City Council James Van Bramer and state Sen. Michael Gianaris, who is deputy majority leader in the Senate.
Some officials who previously supported luring Amazon to the city have changed their position, partly because they were unhappy that the deal was structured to bypass City Council approval. Amazon is eligible for up to US$1.3 billion in subsidies from two city programs, in addition to the state package and other incentives.
In a significant boost for Amazon opponents, the Senate this week nominated Gianaris to the Public Authorities Control Board, where he could effectively veto the project. Cuomo has not said whether he will accept Gianaris’s nomination, but the Senate’s action signalled that the governor and legislature will be at odds over the deal.
Gianaris and other critics portray the New York struggle as a national test for populist forces confronting big companies’ influence, and for the contest within the Democratic Party between its grass-roots and business-friendly wings.
“We are dealing with an era of unprecedented corporate power in this country,” Gianaris said. “This Amazon deal represents a tipping point that is going to set the stage for what this country is going to be going forward.”
Amazon surprised the nation in November by announcing that it would split its much-publicized second headquarters between Arlington, Virginia, and Long Island City, with employees at each site earning an average of more than US$150,000 a year. Initially, the company said it planned a single location with all 50,000 jobs.
The divergent reactions in New York and Virginia arise from political and economic differences between the two, according to officials and analysts in both locations.
New York is a pro-labour city, whereas Virginia is a right-to-work state where employees cannot be obliged to join a union as a condition of employment.
Amazon has opposed attempts to unionize its workforce and said it would do the same in New York. “What Amazon is looking to do is come in and change the values of our city,” said Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.
Protestors rally against Amazon at New York City Hall.
New York also is straining from the effects of rapid economic growth, whereas Arlington is eager to attract investment to Crystal City to offset the loss of thousands of federal government jobs there in a Pentagon reorganization that began in 2005.
The community around Long Island City is home to legions of grass-roots organizations that were already unhappy about gentrification and warn that Amazon’s arrival would further raise housing prices. Some also fault Amazon for selling facial-recognition technology to law enforcement agencies and partnering with companies that work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The activists have occupied an Amazon store in Manhattan, marched in Albany and demonstrated at the office of Assemblywoman Catherine T. Nolan (D-Queens), who supports the deal.
“The geography in New York has brought together a lot of threads of activism who were really ready to react to this kind of announcement and were particularly outraged,” said Deborah Axt, co-executive director of Make the Road, an organization of low-income immigrants and communities of colour.
Northern Virginia, Axt said, does “not have quite the pool of amazing champions ready to jump into the fray as we’re fortunate to have here in New York.”
———
Amazon supporters are aghast that local politicians— including Gianaris and Van Bramer — have turned against the company.
“Everyone in local government has said for years that we need to emphasize outer borough commercial development and that we want tech jobs in Long Island City,” said Stephanie Báez, a spokeswoman for the New York City Economic Development Corp. “But now we are seeing a few of the same local politicians abruptly flip-flopping in reaction to a small and well-organized group of people.”
In Virginia, almost all state and local leaders support the arrival of Amazon, despite opposition by several progressive groups — Tenants and Workers United, Our Revolution Arlington and some members of Indivisible Arlington — that have staged small protests at community meetings.
The Arlington County Board is putting final touches on a proposed US$23 million local incentives package, which it is expected to approve in March or later.
“Most people think this is a great opportunity,” Board Chair Christian Dorsey, D, said.
The board is pressuring Amazon to sign a project labour agreement that ensures a living wage, proper job classifications and safety standards for all those employed by construction contractors and subcontractors.
“They have emphatically not promised anything,” board member Erik Gutshall, D, said. “But I didn’t get the sense that any of those things was a non-starter.”
Residents of the neighbourhoods around the Arlington site worry about rent increases, spiking property taxes and paralyzing traffic. But neither they nor the progressive groups lobbying against the company appears to have enough political clout to block the deal.
In New York, critics are hoping that Amazon will tire of devoting time and money to fighting a battle it didn’t expect.
“The way these fights work, you push on each and every little thing,” Van Bramer said.
That approach was sure to worry Amazon, whose vice president for policy, Brian Huseman, told the recent City Council hearing, “We want to invest in a community that wants us.”

Main Outcomes and Measures: Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for disease per standard deviation (SD) higher telomere length due to germline genetic variation. Results: Summary data were available for 35 cancers and 48 non-neoplastic diseases, corresponding to 420 081 cases (median cases, 2526 per disease) and 1 093 105 controls (median, 6789 per disease). Increased telomere length due to germline genetic variation was generally associated with increased risk for site-specific cancers. The strongest associations (ORs [95% CIs] per 1-SD change in genetically increased telomere length) were observed for glioma, 5.27 (3.15-8.81); serous low-malignant-potential ovarian cancer, 4.35 (2.39-7.94); lung adenocarcinoma, 3.19 (2.40-4.22); neuroblastoma, 2.98 (1.92-4.62); bladder cancer, 2.19 (1.32-3.66); melanoma, 1.87 (1.55-2.26); testicular cancer, 1.76 (1.02-3.04); kidney cancer, 1.55 (1.08-2.23); and endometrial cancer, 1.31 (1.07-1.61). Associations were stronger for rarer cancers and at tissue sites with lower rates of stem cell division. There was generally little evidence of association between genetically increased telomere length and risk of psychiatric, autoimmune, inflammatory, diabetic, and other non-neoplastic diseases, except for coronary heart disease (OR, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.67-0.90]), abdominal aortic aneurysm (OR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.49-0.81]), celiac disease (OR, 0.42 [95% CI, 0.28-0.61]) and interstitial lung disease (OR, 0.09 [95% CI, 0.05-0.15]). Conclusions and Relevance: It is likely that longer telomeres increase risk for several cancers but reduce risk for some non-neoplastic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases.
