Gente 1868-1872: Enslaved persons held by Felipe Yturrino y Arzua
New post! Saying the names of enslaved ancestors in Anasco, 1868-1872.
Events on the way to freedom
In my recent blog post Yturrino: A collateral line, I had questions about what kind of business Felipe Iturrino Arzua (1811 -1894) of Anasco was in. While I was able to follow some notary documents that described a string of land purchases in different municipalities, it really wasn’t clear what he had invested in.
These land purchases now make more sense after…

#OTD in 1820 – Birth of Thomas Sweeny in Co Cork. He was a soldier who served in the Mexican-American War and then was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Thomas William Sweeny was born in Co Cork on 25 December 1820. He immigrated to the United States in 1833. In 1846, he enlisted as a second lieutenant in the 2nd New York Volunteers and fought under General Winfield Scott in Mexico. Sweeny was wounded in the groin at the Battle of Cerro Gordo, and his right arm was so badly injured at the Battle of Churubusco that it had to be amputated. His…

11/25/23.
Sam Setzer (The Sam Setzer Group) is a Los Angeles, California based musician. His Bandcamp footprint dates back to 2015. "Phone Song" caught my ear enough to peruse the Bandcamp page, and I saw that Nic Hessler (Catwalk and several releases on YAY! Records and Captured Tracks).
This was enough for me to listen to the entire 7". Then I went back and listened to Catwalk. Finally, I gave Nic Hessler's eponymous LP another listen. I feel like Setzer's vocals remind me a bit of J Mascis while the music can recall the jangle of Teenage Fanclub.
This 7" is released by Cerro Gordo Recordings.

Watching the Cerro Gordo movie and I've seen clips and such but like
Brent crying over The American Hotel burning down had me in tears. The way his voice cracked when the boys asked to stay there, not knowing it burned down TWO DAYS before they arrived.
I really wish I could donate right now, I'll definitely try in the future.
Here is the link for it if anyone is interested in donating!

Cerro Gordo Ghost Town Day Trip High Above the Owens Valley
In the Inyo Mountains high above the Owens Valley, Cerro Gordo Ghost Town, a once-booming mining town, sits abandoned and alone. It wasn’t always this way. Throughout the 1800s, Cerro Gordo (or the “Fat Hill”) was pumping out thousands of tons of high-grade silver, lead, and other metals. Pablos Flores made the first significant silver discovery near Buena Vista Peak. Not long after, hundreds of…

Built on a rock outcropping above Cerro Gordo Road in Santa Fe, La Capilla de San Ysidro Labrador honors San Isidro Labrador, the eleventh-century patron saint of farmers. The chapel was built by Lorenzo López in 1928, using stones from his property and mud from the acequia.
