Now is the time to use positive reinforcement to teach your pup that she'll feel good if she does what you ask. Don't be fooled by arguments that dogs only do what you say because you are "dominant" over them. "Dominance," just like "social status" in human society, is only relevant a small percentage of the time, and has nothing to do with coming when called or not jumping up on visitors. Besides, who wants a relationship based on a power differential instead of love and mutual cooperation? Luckily for us (and our dogs,) positive reinforcement is efficient and effective at teaching our dogs what we want them to do. It leads to highly reliable responses and makes training fun for all involved. What's not to like?

Is there any good resources for dog behavior and training I can look for? Things that don’t advocate “dominance” or “alpha” theory or anything like that.

Karen Pryor, Patricia B. McConnell, and Sophia Yin are all very good sources.

Hi there! I've always been a big fan of your blog, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice? I just adopted a dog in May, hired a trainer and all that but he still isn't a great listener in public (mainly at the park). Do you have any advice or some articles/books/whatever that might help? I just don't know where to start with my training, but I'd like to do it myself now. Thank you!!!!!
Aw, thanks ☺ I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog!
And congratulations on your puppo! It’s amazing how they slot right in like they’ve always been a part of your life!
For all my experience with my own dogs I rarely feel qualified to give training advice. But I’d be happy to pass on a few basic tips. I personally have found Karen Pryor and Patricia B. McConnell’s books (in particular Don’t Shoot the Dog and The Other End of the Leash) to be written in a way that describes the science behind behavioral modification in terms that are accessible even if you don’t have a behavioral science terminology background.
Just like people, some dogs have a harder time focusing than others. I’ve met a few (mostly labs, pitties, doodles, and gun dogs) that I’m not convinced have ever been able to get a single brain cell to focus ever! These dogs can be very frustrating to work with. But they also teach trainers an amazing amount about dog training!
One of the things the very first trainer I worked with, with my very first dog, reinforced in every lesson was the “Three D’s” of dog training. Duration, Distance, and Distractions. The first step is helping the dog understand what it is you are asking of them...teaching the command itself (”sit” means the butt hits the floor and the front feet stay planted on the ground). The next step is to work on Duration (the butt stays on the ground until the handler gives the release word...the behavior is only rewarded if it ends after the release is given). Then we worked on Distance (”sit” means the butt hits the ground and stays there even if handler takes 1 step away, then 2 steps, and so on).
The most difficult of the Three D’s is Distraction (”sit means butt hits the ground and stays until the release command even if there’s something interesting going on over there). “Sit” in the living room is very different to “Sit” in the back yard is very different to “Sit” in the park. Working in a group obedience class builds in a bit of distraction work just because there are other dogs, smells, and noises while still offering some control over the environment. But even if your dog learns to do well in a group class setting, the distractions offered in a public setting where you have zero control over the environment typically need the same kind of gradual exposure and work up that you use when working with intentional distractions in a class setting.
Good luck with your pup!

Synopsis : Ebook The Puppy Primer EPUB / PDF
Dr. McConnell added new information about the benefits of positive reinforcement AND the importance of realistic expectations. For instance, 'sit' while waiting for the food bowl is NOT equivalent to 'sit' when company comes to the door While it's almost twice the size of the original, the book is still easy to read, user-friendly and priced right for trainers and dog owners. It's the perfect guide for positive-based training classes or for new dog owners flying solo.

Can you recommend any books that discusses the idea of "alpha dogs" and how it is incorrect?
I can’t off the top of my head. But here is a brief rundown on the science behind the idea of alpha wolves (and dogs). It’s gonna be long so buckle up!
1947 - Schenkel: Expression studies on wolves
1970 - D. L. Mech - The Wolf: Ecology and Behaviour of an Endangered Species
1971 - Fox: Socio-ecological implications of individual differences in wolf litters: a developmental and evolutionary perspective
Okay so those are the three main (but there are many, many others) works talking about alphas in wolf packs. In the later 1960′s, Schenkel, Mech, and other ecologists put a lot more research into actual wolf pack research. Prior to this, most research on wolf pack dynamics was done on unrelated wolves in captivity (whose behaviours do not reflect the behaviours of related familial units of wolves in the wild).
1967 - Schenkel: Submission: Its Features and Function in the Wolf and Dog
1999 - Mech: Alpha Status, Dominance, and Division of Labor in Wolf Packs
These are the two (arguably) most influential wolf ecologists to exist prior to the twenty-first century, and both of them said hey look maybe we were wrong because that’s how science works. Again, there are tons more articles looking at these dynamics but I’m only linking these two.
Sometime in there, alpha wolf became alpha dog and people used this as an excuse to “dominate” their dogs because hey, it works!
There are several animal behaviour scientists who have been actively working to help put an end to all of the alpha dog situation. Unfortunately, people aren’t willing to let the myth die because dominance “training” shows fast results. But there is still a lot of effort underway!
Noteworthy animal behaviour scientists who might have books to peruse include:
Karen B. Wood
Alexandra Horowitz
Patricia B. McConnell
Clive Wynne*
Emily Blackwell*
John Bradshaw*
(*These are from a google search, I do not have any knowledge or opinion about them or their training methods.)
For more info, here are two terrific articles looking into Cesar Millan’s methods and how they ignore the current, up-to-date science regarding dog training: this one from the human behind why-animals-do-the-thing, and this one written for National Geographic.
Sorry for that super long, extensive history about wolf dynamics and dog training. Hope that helps you in your search! -C

How to Prepare Your Dog to Be Left at Home Alone (Again)
Whether your dog is new or old, these tips will help ease its transition from lockdown to normal life.
By Jen A. Miller
May 27, 2020
Did you get a new dog during the coronavirus lockdown? Or has your long-time four-legged companion gotten used to having you home?
“Dogs are highly social, which is why we get along with them so well,” said Patricia B. McConnell, certified applied animal behaviorist and author of “The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs.” “If all the sudden, they go from ‘everybody home all the time’ to ‘nobody home all day long,’ it can lead to some serious behavioral problems.”
This can mean accidents in the house, chewing on the furniture when you are away, or worse.
Want to avoid that? Here’s how to transition to a new normal, for both of you.
Start Leaving
The members of your household probably haven’t left the house for an extended period of time for what, weeks? Months? The 17 years this quarantine has felt like? So, start transitioning as cities and states reopen by leaving a little bit at a time. But not for too long. Start “unbelievably slow,” said Dr. McConnell. Leave a handful of treats on the ground and, while the dog is eating them, “everybody walks out the door,” she said. Come back in five seconds. Next time, leave for 10 seconds, then walk to the mailbox and back, then take a longer walk or a long drive.
Make sure you are mimicking the routine you’ll have when you go back to work: Get your wallet and keys, leave through the door you’ll go through. This way, the dog gets used to the cues that mean you are leaving — and coming back in through the same spot.
Give Your Dog a Safe Space
Make sure your dog is left in a safe space that it knows — and don’t lock it in a room that’s unfamiliar. That safe space might be a crate, though not all dogs like being in a crate. (My first dog, a Jack Russell terrier, loved her crate; the dog I have now, a cattle dog mix, couldn’t be bothered.) Other dogs are just fine being left to lie wherever in the house they want.
The best space for your dog may not be one with a view either, said Sarah Wilson, dog trainer and author of “My Smart Puppy: Fun, Effective and Easy Puppy Training,” especially if your dog barks a lot. “When they’re screaming out the window at everyone who’s going by, their brains are flooded with all of this confusing and upsetting brain chemistry, which doesn’t go away on its own instantly,” she said. “It’s not a game for them when they’re barking hysterically out the window.” If a crate doesn’t work for that dog, it may work to use a baby gate to keep it in a room it likes, but without access to a window.
Make a New Plan for Entertaining Your Dog
If your dog has gotten used to walks every four or five hours, what’s going to happen when that’s not an easy option? Can you come home to walk the dog? Will you hire a dog walker, or take your dog to a doggie daycare?
Dr. McConnell suggests you figure out how you’re going to engage your dogs’ brain if the level of physical exercise you are currently providing it is not an option. You can teach them new tricks, or try new walking routes, which engages their brains because dogs will work to analyze new smells.
“Even if it’s just once or twice a week, pop your dog in the car and go somewhere different,” said Dr. McConnell.
Look for Troubling Behavior — But Don’t Punish
Dogs with separation anxiety may go to the bathroom in the house, or chew or rip up things that are not their toys. But don’t punish the dog when you come home, said Katherine A. Houpt, professor emeritus of behavior medicine at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, because dogs will forget what they did and by then they will “no longer associate punishment with the action.”
Your dog may also get clingy and follow you around the house, pace when it thinks you’re leaving or drool. That also means the dog is experiencing separation anxiety and you need to work a little bit more to help it.
If you are frustrated or feel like nothing is working, reach out for help. Call your veterinarian to make sure that nothing is physically wrong with your dog. If it is behavioral, then your veterinarian may recommend calling a dog trainer or animal behaviorist. Dr. McConnell said to look for a certified applied animal behaviorist or a certified professional dog trainer. Trainers should use positive reinforcement instead of force and coercion.
Your veterinarian may also recommend anti-anxiety medication for your dog, if the anxiety persists despite making the recommended changes. You may also consider anti-anxiety medications if your dog’s behavior is causing harm even if it’s not destructive — such as if your dog’s barking is annoying your neighbors to an extreme degree.
