White- necked Rockfowl
Tumblr media
"I saw a picture of it in a book and was appalled at how bad the art was. Then I looked it up and realised that it actually looks like that! Plasters its nest to the rock in caves or overhanging rocks. Prefers getting there by hopping rather than flying." "Their colorful art deco-esque face masks make them look like no other extant bird."
Submitted as 'Yellow-headed Picathartes'
Going into the latin name of this species, Picathartes comes from 'pica' for magpie and 'cathartes' for vulture, and gymnoceohalus means 'naked head'. Since this genus was originally thought to ve a member of the crow family, it makes sense they'd give the new genus name some tie to corvids.
Picathartes live in rocky jungles of southern West Africa, preferring to nest on cliffs or in caves by hanging their mud nests from the walls. They can be colonial nesters, but often are antagonistic towards their neighbors and their chicks.
Picathartes have a wide ranging diet of insects, but they also seem to show preference for following army-ant swarms and picking off insects that are trying to flee the ants. When feeding nestlings, it seems they prefer to catch frogs and lizards rather than just insects.
Interestingly, this species is one that helped launch David Attenborough's career. Another presenter was supoosed to go and film a show (Zoo Quest; 1954) documenting the capture of animals for zoos. When the original presenter fell ill, Attenborough took his place and launched his career as a narrator.

random ask: what is your go-to daily drink? your special occasion drink? detail delightful, recipe spectacular.
∧,,,∧ (  ̳• · • ̳) /    づ♡ I love you drinks [you're pretty cool though]
Alas poor Yorick, I am so boring. My usual drinks are tea (white no sugar; daily) and coffee (flat white; less frequent, but still often). Sometimes I will be a tiny bit more fancy and have chai or hot chocolate. All of the hot beverages, really.
Special occasion drink is a Vietnamese iced coffee (basically coffee with condensed milk and ice). I am too scared to attempt making one myself, and if I was successful I'd have a serious problem on my hands because I would never stop having them. So, special occasion drink it stays.
(I think you're pretty cool too)

Not me looking at this guy for a solid 5 minutes trying to figure out wheter he's AI generator, or he just looks like an unpolished 3d blender model.

Turns out it's the second one and they're called White-necked rockfowls, scientifically Picathartes (from latin meaning magpie vulture) Gymnocephalus (from greek meaning naked head). Their taxonomy jumped around many a bird families: crows and starlings to name a few. However now, with the closely related grey-necked rockfowl, they make up the separate Picathartidae family.

random ask: what is your absolute most favorite food ever? the one that you wish you could summon at will with no prep required and also need everyone around you to try and also love (but not so much that there's none left for you)?
I am a sad little carb gremlin and I love pastries! Meat pies specifically, as I am annoyingly Australian. They've been my safe-food since forever, and I have had a lifelong obsession. It's pretty bogan of me and a little embarrassing, but oh well.
The best one I ever had was actually at a renaissance fair a few years ago. I went back several times in later years but could never find the same stall again :(
The thing I would actually want other people to try was a mango float I had at a dessert bar I frequent with my partner - absolutely blew my mind. Oh my goddd it was so so so good. If they didn't change their menu every month, I would never get anything else from there. Instead, I must patiently wait and vibrate until they decide to bring it back.
