Close-Up Video Shows Texas Floating Barrier Has Circular Saws

The wrecking ball-sized buoys that make up the floating barrier that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott installed in July in the Rio Grande have circular saws between them, according to a video posted by Rep. Sylvia Garcia.

"Appalled by the ongoing cruel and inhumane tactics employed by @GovAbbott at the Texas border," Garcia, a Democrat, wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, alongside the clip. "The situation's reality is unsettling as these buoys' true danger and brutality come to light. We must stop this NOW!"

Mexican authorities said last week that two bodies had been recovered from the river in recent days, including one that was caught in the floating barrier. One body was found stuck in the lines of orange buoys, Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said in a statement on August 2. A second body was recovered about three miles upriver from the buoys, The Associated Press reported.

A repost of the video by Laiken Jordahl, a Southwest conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity, amassed more than 8 million views.

The center is an environmental group where Jordahl works to protect wildlife, ecosystems, and public lands throughout the Southwest desert and U.S-Mexico borderlands, according to its website.

"Abbott has installed circular saws between the Rio Grande border buoys to maim or kill anyone who attempts to climb over," Jordahl wrote in the post. "Two bodies have already been found trapped in the floating barrier. He wants more migrants to die."

Jordahl told Newsweek: "Each day the floating wall, saw blades and concertina wire are allowed to stay up, more migrants will be injured or killed and more wildlife will suffer.

"Governor Abbott is turning this beautiful river into a death trap for people and wildlife. Our wildlands and communities will not be turned into war zones. Abbott must be stopped."

The U.S. Justice Department is suing Abbott over the barrier, after warning that it violates federal law and raises humanitarian concerns for migrants crossing into the country from Mexico. The lawsuit is asking a court to force Texas to remove it.

"We allege that Texas has flouted federal law by installing a barrier in the Rio Grande without obtaining the required federal authorization," Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said in a statement in late July.

"This floating barrier poses threats to navigation and public safety and presents humanitarian concerns. Additionally, the presence of the floating barrier has prompted diplomatic protests by Mexico and risks damaging U.S. foreign policy."

Mexican officials say MS-13 gang members from El Salvador infiltrated a group of migrants that traveled in a caravan from Central America to the country’s border with Texas.

Miguel Riquelme, governor of Mexico’s Coahuila state, said Mara Salvatrucha members were hiding in the group of around 1,600 migrants staying at a federally operated facility in Piedras Negras, Cohauila, and were recently identified by government officials.

“We have data that there are agitators inside the shelter, that there are members of the caravan who are provoking others, some of them belong to the Mara Salvatrucha , some others who bring criminal records in their country and what we have been doing is deporting them directly with Migration,” Riquelme told local reporters, according to an English language translation.

At least twice this past week, a few dozen people violently tried to break out of the heavily guarded facility and fought federal police.

Twenty-seven who took part in the fight were deported, according to Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber, a U.S. law enforcement official who was informed of the removals by Piedras Negras officials.

“They got deported right away,” Schmerber said in a phone call Friday.

Piedras Negras Mayor Claudio Bres on Thursday said 25 people were removed from the country.

The group of migrants arrived on buses in the Mexican border city Feb. 4 and have been held there as they wait to make asylum claims at U.S. ports of entry.

As the word of this new creation traveled, people tried them, loved them and over time, the name changed and Nacho’s “specials” became “special nachos”. The original recipe is printed in the 1954 St. Anne’s Cookbook. The popularity of the new dish spread swiftly throughout Texas and the Southwest and has since gained millions of fans across America. Nachos with an abundance of toppings are often called loaded nachos, super nachos or nachos supreme. MEXICO CITY: Ten suspected cartel gunmen and four police were killed during a daytime shootout on Saturday in a Mexican town near the US border.

The government of the northern state of Coahuila said state police clashed with a group of heavily armed gunmen riding in pickup trucks in the small town of Villa Union, about 40 miles (65 km) southwest of the border city of Piedras Negras.

Standing outside the Villa Union mayor’s bullet-ridden offices, Coahuila governor Miguel Angel Riquelme told reporters the state had acted “decisively” to tackle the gunmen, who he said had entered from the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.

Riquelme said 10 gunmen had been killed, three of them by officers in pursuit of the gang members after the gunfight that claimed the lives of four police and wounded six more.

Around midday, heavy gunfire began ringing out in Villa Union, and a convoy of armed pickup trucks could be seen moving around the town, according to video clips posted by social media users. Others showed plumes of smoke rising from the town.

Reuters could not vouch for their authenticity.

An unspecified number of people were also missing, including some who were at the mayor’s office, the governor said.

Riquelme said authorities had identified 14 vehicles involved in the attacks and seized more than a dozen guns.

In an interview aired on Tuesday, Trump said he planned to designate the cartels as terrorist organizations, sparking concerns the move could serve as a prelude to the United States trying to intervene unilaterally in Mexico.

US Attorney General William Barr is due to visit Mexico next week to discuss cooperation over security.
