Ay man, what do you make of Odin having more recorded names related to him as a war deity than any of his other roles? Was reading a survey of them recently and was surprised to read this when I'd though his magick/galdr titles were more common.
Personally, one of the things I find interesting is that many of the names can be read in battle contexts and that the thread that runs through many of them which are non-battle is also strife-related, excitation, or fury related. Bluntly, it doesn’t surprise me that the wodh, in the context of arousal/stirring up is, or becomes, associated with battle given historical context when these names were recorded. Particularly when we look at the aristocracy/leadership class, having poems/sagas/stories composed about one’s deeds is an excellent way to be remembered/elevated, to draw people to you, and to site yourself as part of a lineage. My personal take is that is we look at so-called Celtic and Norse art, we see a lot of blurring of the lines and distinctions we moderns have. Think of all the intricate knot-work, the way depictions of animals and humans are entwined, or even the practice of kennings - metaphors are not mere pretty language here, but a kind of acknowledgement of entwined qualities. Think about pre-Linnean categorizations of the world, and we see a lot more connection based on similarity and resemblance; things are not just “like” a thing, the things share qualities, and it is these qualities which link them.  For the Norse, or at least those who had sagas, poems etc commissioned about them, battle was part of their identity. It was a place where they their poets and followers, noted something akin to their god. So it’s not surprising that the warrior-leader identity generates a lot of battlenames. We can see this happen in Christianity in the medieval period too, and also in some of the warlike associations in the Bible (I don’t know Hebrew so I can’t comment on Jewish takes in the Torah.) Do I think more names of one type makes a deity “more” a battle god than a poetry/magic god? No. I don’t think it’s that simple, and it’s why I shy away from calling gods/spirits gods/spirits of a given type or domain as much as I can. Material about given numinous beings is always going to be human-based, and filtered through socio-cultural and socio-historical contexts which influence what comes down to us after all.  Every so often, I go back to this paper and think on it - An Eye for Odin? Divine Role-Playing in the Age of Sutton Hoo - because of the notion that some of these leaders, as well as perhaps claiming lineage or patronage from the god, may occasionally have embodied or manifested the god in a given instantiation, and I’m not sure they manifested the weird queer sorcerer bit publicly, but neither is that aspect erased from the poetic corpus we have
