Virat Kohli Continues With Blockbuster Performances In Big Tournaments, Encouraging Signs For India Ahead Of T20 WC
Following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the biggest positive for the franchise and Team India is the form of batter Virat Kohli, who reinvented himself with a more attacking gameplay, especially against spin and once again delivered in a big tournament.
After 15 matches, Virat has ended his IPL campaign as the Orange Cap holder for the most runs in the season. He has scored 741 runs at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69, with a century and five half-centuries. His best score is 113*.
What stands out is his strike rate of 154.69, his best-ever in an IPL season and the total of 38 sixes that he has hit, equalling his six-tally of 2016 IPL in which he had blasted 973 runs in 16 matches with four centuries and seven fifties at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of over 152.
Heading into the ICC T20 World Cup, Virat is the most in-form player in the national side and him playing all games is a no brainer. In the 2023 season of the IPL, he scored 639 runs in 14 matches at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82, with two centuries and six fifties. His best score was 101*.
Combining his statistics across both seasons, he has scored 1,380 runs in 29 innings at an average of 57.50 and a strike rate of 147.43, with three centuries and 11 fifties, best score of 113*. This makes him the most consistent batter across both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, which he has played after India's loss to England in the ICC T20 WC 2022 semifinal by ten wickets, after which, India moved on to youngsters. Virat was only recalled for the series against Afghanistan this year in January, where he scored 29 and 0 in two games.
Virat has also been magnificent for India across all big tournaments, ever since he returned from a break back in August 2022 during the Asia Cup. He had taken a break after months of poor, inconsistent returns with the bat and made an immediate impact in the Asia Cup, scoring 276 runs in five games at an average of 92.00, with a century, two fifties and best score of 122*, then his first century in three years. He ended as the second-highest run-getter in the season.
The 35-year-old took his brilliant form to ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, which he kickstarted with an incredible 82* in 53 balls against Pakistan at a jam-packed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in a tough 160-run chase. He stood tall at the top of the batting charts with 296 runs in six games, average of 98.66 and a strike rate of over 136. Four half-centuries came out of his bat, but he still could not take his team to the title.
After some fine performances across bilateral cricket, Virat proved his undeniable mettle in T20 cricket with 639 runs in IPL 2023, ending as the fourth-highest run-getter even though his side could not make it to the playoffs.
As the focus shifted towards the ODI World Cup in India that year, Virat scored a century in the Asia Cup against Pakistan, ending the tournament with 129 runs in three games at an average of 64.50 and the trophy in his hands.
The Cricket World Cup in India saw Virat delivering an all-time great campaign, smashing records everyday match-day, including breaking his idol Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in a single World Cup and 49 ODI tons. In 11 matches, he scored an unbelievable 765 runs at an average of 95.63, with three centuries and six fifties. His best score was 117, but even then, the gold went to Australia in the final.
Now with a 741-run IPL, Virat has proved himself as a batter to watch out for in the T20 World Cup. Across these big tournaments, he has made 2,846 runs at an average of 71.15, with eight centuries and 23 fifties. His best score has been 122*, which came against Pakistan in the Asia Cup last year.
Since his comeback in Asia Cup 2022, he has scored 3,007 runs in 59 international matches at an average of 58.96, with 10 centuries and 17 fifties. His best score is 186. Including his IPL numbers, he has made 4,387 runs in 88 matches and 92 innings, at an average of 58.49, with 13 centuries and 28 fifties.
With T20 WC coming up, Virat's numbers across all the format look encouraging and all hopes are on him to deliver a title-winning campaign for India.

WPL: Sutherland Will Add A Lot Of Firepower To Our Team, Says DC Captain Lanning
Premier League: Ahead of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 season, Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning believes the inclusion of all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, who the side roped in for Rs 2 crore at the auction, will add a lot more firepower to the team.
Annabel recently starred in Australia’s one-off Test against South Africa, making a double century and taking a five-wicket haul in the hosts’ win by an innings and 242 runs at Perth. "She comes into the team in hot form. I have played a lot of cricket with her and she’s a great addition, both with the bat and the ball.”
“She has matured a lot on and off the field over the past 12 months. She will add a lot of depth, a lot of firepower to our team and I am excited to see how things go,” said Meg to broadcasters JioCinema ahead of the tournament.
Lanning, Australia's multiple times World Cup-winning, was the leading run-scorer in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023, amassing 345 runs in nine matches for the Delhi Capitals.
Though Meg retired from international cricket last year, she is keen to get the Capitals win WPL 2024 after being runners-up last time. "It will be nice to contribute like I did last year. But my number one priority is to win the tournament and help Delhi win the tournament. So obviously as a batter I need to make some runs.
"That’s the plan I am looking forward to. I have always enjoyed playing in India and it’s going to be tough. You’ve got some good bowlers out there and there’s no hiding these days as everybody knows what you do. So we’ll go out there, have some fun and see what happens."
Asked about how DC dealt with the finale loss, Meg said: "Obviously, we would have loved to win and we got reasonably close to that. We didn’t make as many runs as we would have liked to. We had to fight really hard with the ball and Mumbai were just too good in the end. But to play such good cricket throughout was great. Hopefully we can go one better this year."
Meg also feels she has evolved a lot over the years as a captain in the shortest format. "I am a very different captain now then what I was at the start. A lot of it has got to do with instinct especially in T20 cricket. It changes so quickly and you always need to stay a step ahead.
"So, it’s always a good challenge for me to think about what the batters may be trying to do, and plan with the bowlers accordingly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You have got to expect to fail a fair bit and expect things not to go right, but that’s the game and you need to work out the road ahead."
She also had something to say on her vice-captain Jemimah Rodrigues. "She’s got a lot of talent obviously. She plays her music as well. She brings a lot of energy. It’s actually hard to get her attention on the field.
"Sometimes, she’s dancing for the crowd and performing for them. I had my challenges trying to get hold of her but it’s nice to see her enjoying herself. So, let’s see how it goes this year."
Speaking about the preparations for WPL 2024, Meg explained: "Everybody looks like they have improved and they are enjoying their cricket and are ready for the start of the season. We know each other a lot better than we did last year and we’ve got a reasonably similar squad as well. Hopefully that will mean we’ll be able to play well."
With Delhi being one of the two venues alongside Bengaluru for WPL 2024, Meg is excited to play in front of DC’s home crowd. "I have played once in Delhi a number of years ago, so we are relying on some local knowledge. Generally, for T20 cricket in India, the tracks are pretty flat, targets hard to defend but good for batting.
"We are really pumped to play in front of our home fans. We really felt the support last year playing in Mumbai, but playing in front of our fans is something the group is looking forward to."
Meg signed off by revealing bits from her life post international cricket retirement, including working in a cafe. "It’s been good to be a little bit quieter, little bit slower pace, but I am ready to get back into the WPL. I have still been playing some domestic cricket back home, just trying to get ready for the tournaments I am playing in.
"I worked at a café for about eight weeks, mainly just taking the coffees out. I would have loved to have been a barista but that may have been my next step. I do like my coffee and I have been to a few cafes in my town. I thought I’ll go and check it out from a different perspective and it was something I enjoyed doing."

The WPL 2023 made a big difference in women’s cricket’s standing around the world.

MI finished only behind DC, the league leaders, on net run rate, but nonetheless managed to secure second place in the WPL 2023 points standings. DC put on a strong showing in eight games, taking home two losses and winning six to total 12 points at a run rate of +1.856. MI, on the other hand, also scored 12 points, but their slightly lower run rate of +1.711 allowed them to take second place.
DC advanced straight to the final as the table leaders, while MI had to beat UP Warriorz’s challenge in the Eliminator to get to the championship match. With eight points, the UP Warriorz under Alyssa Healy’s leadership placed third in the standings and advanced to the postseason.
With four points, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), led by Indian batsman Smriti Mandhana, took fourth place among the other teams. In their eight games, RCB won just two and lost six, making it a challenging season. Before they won the competition for the first time, they went through a five-game losing streak.
The Gujarat Giants, who finished with four points at the bottom of the table, had a dismal first season under the direction of Australian Beth Mooney. With only two victories in eight games, the Gujarat team’s season didn’t conclude as they would have liked.
