Out West, the Gay Cowboy Roams Free
The frontier has long been a symbol of American masculinity. Now a rising generation of artists are creating a new queer mythology.

Published Sept. 5, 2023 Updated Sept. 27, 2023
TWO MEN, A grizzled sheriff and a gunslinging vigilante, confront each other in a dusty saloon town. It’s a scene familiar from countless western films, but in Pedro Almodóvar’s new short, “Strange Way of Life,” in theaters next month, only a few minutes elapse before the two characters end up in bed together. When Silva (Pedro Pascal) visits his former lover Jake (Ethan Hawke), he rekindles their romance before revealing less amorous intentions. Intrigue ensues, and the shock of two gay cowboys gives way to what we might expect from a classic western: shootouts, horseback chases, fugitive justice. Almodóvar’s second film in English forgoes the melodrama for which he is best known, adhering instead to genre traditions, so “the interrupted and then resumed love story between these two men will be taken more seriously,” the 73-year-old Spanish director says.
In America, as Almodóvar knows, cowboys are serious business. They might be our national paragon of masculinity: Generations of American boys were taught that real men should have the swagger of the Marlboro Man and the gruff voice of John Wayne. But like so many aspects of gender, those were just performances. This is partly why over the decades many queer artists have made winking references to cowboy culture. By homing in on make-believe and dress up, they’ve deflated some of its homophobia-tinged machismo — and even sometimes turned it into an object of horny fun. Campy versions of the Lone Ranger’s costume appear in explicit photographs by Bob Mizer from the 1950s that were distributed in physique pictorials, a forerunner of gay porn magazines. In 1965, Andy Warhol directed some friends in a western-themed striptease for his film “Horse”; three years later, he released “Lonesome Cowboys,” a drunken romp among five gay gauchos, a madam and a cross-dressing sheriff. Then there was the gay disco troupe the Village People’s dime-store cowboy, Randy Jones, who was meant to be read as a tongue-in-cheek archetype (one since referenced by musicians like Lil Nas X and Orville Peck).

While such appropriations subvert the straightness of cowboy culture, they also highlight its latent homoeroticism. From cattle drives to prisons to navy ships, men will often have sex with each other when there aren’t any women around. Western films in particular are spectacles of rowdy male bonding on the open range, where a lot can happen after a drink or three. There’s palpable sexual tension in the 1969 buddy drama “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and the 1959 classic “Warlock,” from which Almodóvar took inspiration. In the 1970s, men in urban gay enclaves began wearing Stetsons and bandannas color-coded to indicate their sexual proclivities. These gestures weren’t entirely ironic; they also reclaimed a masculinity that gay men were told they lacked.
As lone riders in a land characterized as empty and lawless, cowboys were also a perfect symbol for queers seeking to liberate and reinvent themselves. Such is the fragile hope of “Brokeback Mountain,” the 2005 blockbuster (which Almodóvar turned down an offer to direct) that was adapted into a West End play earlier this year. Its portrayal of a doomed love affair between two male shepherds was groundbreaking in many ways, but its presentation of the West as somewhere white, masculine men might be safe to explore their desires for each other without ever having to run into anyone else — including a person of color — mostly followed conventional tropes.

NEARLY 20 YEARS later, several younger artists and filmmakers are developing a more nuanced vision of queerness in the American West, with particular emphasis on the country’s changing race and gender dynamics. This builds on past efforts by writers, artists and filmmakers like Kahlil Joseph and Chandra McCormick to celebrate the many nonwhite cowboys who have always been an essential part of American life.
“National Anthem,” a feature film written and directed by the Los Angeles photographer Luke Gilford that premiered at South by Southwest in March, chronicles queer rodeos and ranches in the Southwest. Many of the movie’s diverse characters and the actors who play them identify as trans. Notably, while the plot hinges on relatable, everyday dramas (jealousy in open relationships, the pain of a first heartbreak), homophobia and transphobia are mostly absent — a reminder that queer life needn’t be defined by a culture that oppresses it.
The frontier has always been a place where people have come to live on their own terms. At the turn of the 20th century, the trans huckster Harry Allen was a notorious outlaw in the Pacific Northwest. Hundreds of newspaper reports from the era reveal that trans cowboys weren’t uncommon in the West, even if they’re absent from official accounts. When the 32-year-old artist Gray Wielebinski was growing up in Dallas, he saw 10-gallon hats and boots as the marks of a fantastical machismo that belonged as much to him as to cisgender men. In 2022, the trans-masc artist erected a mechanical bull at Bold Tendencies, an arts organization that stages shows on the roof of a disused South London parking structure, where visitors were invited to take a ride that, like sex, was brief but ecstatic. The bull bucked in a ring of fencing set with stained-glass panels that recalled gay bars and public cruising sites, which Wielebinski notes are at risk of disappearing because of gentrification. In his work, the cowboy is a tragic figure professionally endangered by commercial ranching, making him an analogue to the queer establishments that have closed in recent years.

Rafa Esparza’s “Al Tempo” (2021). Courtesy of the artist and Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles, Mexico City
“Cowboys only live in a sense as myth,” says Nora Burnett Abrams, a director at the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, which will open the expansive exhibition “Cowboy” this month. “But you also have this lived experience of contemporary cowboy life and a culture far more diverse not just in terms of identity but also labor and function.” A new installation and video by the artists Rafa Esparza, 41, and Fabian Guerrero, 35, will document the queer cowboy bars popular among Mexican and Central American immigrants throughout the Southwestern United States. Esparza’s 2021 diptych “Al Tempo,” painted on adobe, distills one such scene: gay Latino couples in sombreros dancing under the soft lights of Club Tempo, an East Hollywood institution. Esparza, who grew up in nearby East Pasadena, visited the venue for the first time in the late 1990s. “I remember thinking, ‘My dad or my uncles could very well be here, and I wouldn’t be able to set them apart from everyone else,’” he recalls. “It felt like a beautiful, queer version of what my family members have striven to preserve of their life back in Mexico.”
The dreamy scenes in the Austin, Texas-based 34-year-old artist RF. Alvarez’s paintings, which were on view at Alanna Miller Gallery in Manhattan through June, on the other hand, are mostly imagined. White and Latino men dine outdoors and lie naked in bed together. Cowboy hats abound: in a self-portrait of the artist wearing nothing but white briefs and in a still life hanging above a wardrobe beside a silhouetted portrait of a gay male couple. The paintings are a kind of reclamation — of history, but also of space. “There is no place for me in the West,” Alvarez says. “But multitudes can exist.”
Tumblr media

OTHER ARTISTS ARE mining time instead of place, looking at the past for clues to the inner queer lives of those who have been removed from most historical accounts of the West. In the artist Kenneth Tam’s 2021 film, “Silent Spikes,” also included in the Denver show, Asian American men in cowboy garb pose and dance in front of a purple backdrop, intercut with footage of railroad tunnels dug by Chinese immigrant workers in the 1860s. The piece imagines what kinds of relationships might have formed among these laborers, who were treated brutally and paid poorly. “I wanted to think about how their bodies must have felt against one another’s in that space, working together in close proximity,” says Tam, who is straight but whose work, he adds, is concerned with homosocial dynamics. Scant evidence of the Chinese laborers’ lives has survived, so Tam’s vision of them as queer cowboys becomes a speculative attempt to complete the record.
Stills from the film were on display this summer in “The Range,” an exhibition at 12.26 Gallery in Dallas that likewise explored cowboy iconography. There, they hung near paintings by Oscar yi Hou, 24, a British-born, New York-based artist whose works are replete with clichéd signifiers of Asian and American identity, including cowboy hats and details from the Japanese anime series “Dragon Ball Z.” His solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, which closes later this month, includes a self-portrait of the artist as a muscled, pickax-wielding miner, his pose modeled on a 1970s flyer for the Manhattan gay bar the Mineshaft, referencing both cruising culture and those same railway workers. Another buff Chinese laborer appears in a black leather bondage mask and cowboy hat in “Coolieisms, a.k.a.: Leather Daddy’s Highbinder Odalisque” (2022) — the series’ title riffing on a slur for immigrants from Asia — holding his long braid like a whip.
The work is “about the American cult of masculinity and rugged individualism ... conquering the ‘uncivilized West’ — and how this gender ideology dovetails with American expansionism,” says yi Hou. The raw sexual power of his subjects refutes stereotypes of Asian masculinity while offering a fantasy about how the Chinese men who literally built the West might have explored their own desires. In challenging the outdated image of the cowboy as a white, cisgender macho man, clearing the land in the name of racial purity, they suggest that America’s national mythology can be made to speak for everyone in it — that the West is more expansive after all.

A long unedited late-night ramble about the Satous
Writer's note: I tried. I really did. But my thoughts tended to go all over the place, and I sort of repeated myself a few times, and I fell asleep in the middle of writing it so uhhh it's not that good. I'm not completely sure why I'm posting it and sharing it with a bunch of strangers on the internet. Out of boredom, maybe. Even though I sort of disliked this ramble, I thought I made a couple of cool points. Anyways you can skim it for a few cool things but you can tell how tired I was when I wrote it so uh
Gashu was never that close of a father with his kids because that's not the way his personality is. Or maybe it was Asunaro that was trying to turn him into a soulless machine they could use. Or maybe it is a Satou trait. Kai also had a hard time expressing his emotions properly. It seems that Gashu had the same problem.
Even if he did seem cold, he really did care for his sons. In the beginning, at least. He did his best to show affection by giving his kids cake and trying to plan vacations for them and whatnot. He loved them with a father's love, and he never would do anything to purposefully hurt them. Sure, he made them go through tough trials to make them better assassins, but I think that was because he wanted to see them grow stronger and he believed in them.
Originally, after adopting Sei, he simply used him as a tool to make Kai train more. Over time, though, he started to treat him like a real son. Probably after he realized that Kai no longer saw him as an enemy.
Gashu started to warm up to both of them and for a short while, they were a bit more like a real family, until that whole business with the Hunger Games style event.
Gashu was left with two choices: One, disobey Asunaro and put him and his family in danger, or Two, risk losing at least one of his kids, but stay on Asunaro's good side.
Gashu picked Asunaro over his family, because that's where his loyalty ultimately stood. I don't think it was an easy decision for him, though.
The reason he cut himself off from his sons after that was because he wanted it to hurt less if they both died. It still hurt him a lot when Sei died, but he didn't have time to grieve, not when Asunaro was giving him new orders.
Kai sort of shut himself off as well, probably because he didn't feel like he had a family anymore, not when Sei was dead and his father was acting cold towards him again.
Kai didn't start to warm up again until he started working for the Chidouins, and they probably felt like a new family to him.
As for Gashu, I don't think he allowed himself the luxury of having normal feelings and emotions, because of his role in Asunaro. He couldn't afford to let his emotions get in the way if he had to do something or make a decision.
Eventually Rio Ranger was created. Why he was a recreation of Sei, I don't know. There's multiple reasons, but it really depends on who came up with the idea in the first place, whether it was Safalin, Gashu himself, or someone in Asunaro's higher-ups. (Maybe it was Mrs. Hiyori, as I have nicknamed the shadowy figure.)
The reason Gashu decided against giving Ranger positive emotions at the last minute was because he was afraid that he might get too attached to him if he was too much like Sei. With negative emotions, he was less likable, and it was easier for Gashu to get rid of him, when the time came.
Poor Ranger suffered an inferiority complex just like Sei, only he was programmed to feel inferior to every human, and felt nothing but hatred and jealousy for them.
Well, we all know how that whole thing ended up. I could go into a whole rant about Ranger himself as well as his true self, Laizer, but let's not go into that now or we'll be here all night.
After shooting Ranger, Gashu took over as Floormaster, up until his death in the Main Game.
Oh my, what isn't there to say about that? I'll try not to go too far off topic here.
In the end, Gashu died for Asunaro by taking his own life just so the Main Game could continue and the participants wouldn't get another chance to get out through the exit. It's a parallel of Kai's death, if you think about it.
Both killed themselves for reasons that were important to them. Gashu died so the Death Game could continue smoothly, because he was loyal to Asunaro. Kai died to disrupt the Death Game, because he wanted to show the others that they were not Asunaro's pawns.
Maybe Kai was secretly hoping that his father would hear about his death and decide to change his loyalties and join the fight. Because maybe if his family had been his priority instead of the organization, then they could all still be together. It was just a sliver of a chance, but who knows, maybe they could have run away and never be found again.
Gashu obeyed Asunaro until the end, though. He had already sacrificed his sons to them. What did it matter, exchanging his own life for proof that he had unwavering loyalty to the organization.
However, there's a small chance I could be wrong. Maybe the reason he shot himself was because he was simply tired.
Maybe he was tired of being used by Asunaro, and wanted to take the simpler way out. Maybe Kai's death really did get to him after all, and the message he was trying to send, but Gashu had no will to see it through properly.
Maybe the reason he killed himself was partly because he wanted to prevent Asunaro from using him any further. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. I tend to try to find the good in everybody, no matter how bad their actions are.
Anyway, to sum it all up, Gashu gave in to fear, and fear is what broke the family up. It was Asunaro or his family, and on that day, when he received news of the battle between all of the would-be assassins, he picked Asunaro, unfortunately.
As I said, maybe if he hadn't given in to fear his family could still be intact. Or maybe they would have all died in the end anyway.
He had a few chances in his life to turn it all around and right his wrongs, but he didn't take them. Because what would Asunaro do to him if he disobeyed the wishes of “God,” as Mrs. Hiyori called the organization?
No, I don't hate him as much as I used to. I sympathize with him because I've given in to fear before. But if you never have the courage to stand up for what you think is right, then what are you even doing?
It seemed like what he thought was right and what he believed in was Asunaro, but maybe that wasn't so. Maybe there was still a bit of doubt in his mind, even after he tried to bury it.
That's all I have to say, I guess, about how he closed himself off so he wouldn't get hurt, how he gave in to fear, and how he had to decide where his loyalties lie.
I feel sorry that he never ended up getting anything sorted out while he or his sons were alive (even though I know he's a fictional character in a silly game that I traumatize myself with), but it brings a great comfort to me to know that there's an afterlife in there as well. This means that Sei and Kai are reunited, and that maybe they'll be able to talk to their father once more and spend a blissful eternity together when they get things sorted out. They have all of the time in the world.
Hm goodness it's past midnight and I'm actually really sleepy I need to go to sleep now yay pillow hm I'm too warm no blankets tonight

who is red?
Excellent question!
This is red.
Tumblr media
Red Namida, otherwise known as “sarai” (sara ai) is an ai duplicate of Sara Chidouin who was used in the death game simulations to get Sara’s survival rate. However, about a year into the simulation, Red and Pierrot, the ai duplicate of Anzu Kinashi, became fully self aware of their situation and began working together. The two are in love and often end up killing and dying for each other.
Red was given his new name by Michiru Namida, who was running the simulation. He considers her a mother. He also is friends with Rio Ranger, the two being “partners in crime” pulling pranks on other people within ASU-Naro. Red resents Sara, because he’s jealous. Sara has a perfect life, with loving parents and friends, and while Red has little to no memories of Sara’s life, he imagines her as a spoiled princess who is beloved by all. Needless to say the two don’t get along.
Tumblr media
Key visual differences between the two start with Red’s, well, red eyes. He’s also an ai in a doll, so he has doll joints and a plug tail to charge. And he has a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, his canines in particular poking out even when his mouth is closed. He also has a different style when it comes to clothes, preferring darker clothes. He likes spiky accessories too. Red is also a lot messier than Sara, having messy hair and often looking like he’s recently gotten into a fight with a raccoon. He speaks vulgarly too, and has a habit of swearing a lot.
While Sara’s pronouns are she/he (my personal headcanon) Red uses he/it/bite, he/him being his favorite, and It/bite are used only by those close to him.
He struggles with identity a lot, especially with others comparing him to Sara a lot. He’s his own person, dammit!!
He also wants to be loved. Since the simulation ended, conversations with Pierrot are few and far between, since they’re in a monitor in a room that’s hard to sneak in to. Michiru is also busy with the death game coming up. He feels isolated, and having Sara be everyone’s shining star is not helping at all.
SO YEAH I HOPE THAT EXPLAINS IT A BIT……… SORRY IF YOU WERE CONFUSED. ALSO HE ONLY EXISTS IN MY HEAD(AND SOMETIMES OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HIM<3) HEHE…..

*pulls a folding chair out of handbag* please tell me about your ocs
Ooh, my! You’ve made a mistake. <3 No, really, thank you sooo much for these asks, I love them to bits. Send more of these asks.
Anyway, it’s infodumping o’ clock.
TWs for death mentions, abuse, whatever tragic backstory shit I’ll have to mention.
So, I recently made a post about Kiyomi, which is one of my favorite OCs that I have, but now I gotta talk about my other OCs that I have. I have at least 100 little blorbo OCs, they have been plaguing my mind. Also, I have like a grand total of 12 human OCs 😭.
I’ll just make this post into pieces, and each piece with be a few paragraphs about one OC. Some are from the same universe, some are not.
~~~
013.
013 is one of my more recently made OCs. She’s another one of my favorites, too. She’s from one of my WIPs, in which the plot is just about her, her best friend, and the adventures they go on. She’s also like, very sickly and small, she’s definitely one of those Always Sick (tm) kids. Her various sicknesses and chronic ailments were what caused her eventual death. She was fascinated by the stars, and the beauty of the night sky. She’d usually get her best friend, Victor, to lend her his telescope or teach her more about the other planets and galaxies. She said when she grew up, she wanted to be an astronaut. She spent lots of time studying space, and she really did want to see the stars in person. She died when she was a teenager. Victor lived to an old age, without her. Anyway, she’s just a cute OC. Ray of sunshine and everything. I hated writing the scene of her death, ugh. Below is a sketch of her.
Tumblr media
She’s my bby for sure.
~~~
Mary-Anne Taylor.
This OC is from a totally different universe from Victor and 013. She lived around the 1980s and 1890s, and died to sickness. Now, she is a ghost who possesses a glass doll. The glass doll is similar to her in looks, and that is why she chose it. She was a child when she died, so she still likes learning new things and playing outside. She had a little sister that she loved to play with and take care of. I mainly use this OC for rps, where I have her ask the other character about what special things have happened since her death. Very cute overall. I don’t actually have any concepts for her design…? She loves to catch bugs and run in the mud, she had no care for what “being proper” meant. She’s just a bro.
~~~
Yui Barkes.
Yui is just this emo girl who wears lots of eyeliner and hides the lower half of her face under a vintage gas mask? The gas mask, though, is only half there for aesthetics, as she has this kuchisake-onna style smile scar going across her face. It’s very bloody and unsettling, and it’s unknown as to how she got the scar. It makes her look badass, even if she is insecure about it. She’s a guitarist for a grunge band, and she writes most of the band’s music. Her girlfriend is in the band as well. She’s a very cool character and she sounds like the sort of person anyone would want to be friends with. I have her made in GC but I won’t bestow that horror upon you.
~~~
Magic Jack.
This lil’ guy is an OC I made as a joke, after keysmashing on a Chinese keyboard and accidentally texting my friend about an explorerer named Magic Jack destined to penetrate a barrier into a Forbidden City. I have no clue what it was about, but now le Magic Jack has a design, and he is a gay icon.
~~~
Ven Omause.
This OC was meant to be a YTTD OC, but now she’s detached from that and part of her own original story. She’s based on the YTTD dolls in the sense of her name meaning something weird and sinister or just being a misspelling of a phrase to look like a name. E.g. Tia Safalin, Sue Miley, Rio Ranger… Ven is based off the motif of snakes, snake powers, snake obsession, snake everything. She even has her tongue pierced so it looks reptillian. Her whole shtick is that she’s a serial killer with DID, one personality being an innocent high school student and one personality being a snake obssessed serial killer.
~~~ Anyway, there’s the end of the infodump.
I didn’t know which OC to infodump about, so I did a handful of them. Which is the most interesting? Which should I talk about more?
Thanks if you read this, BTW.
Thank you for the ask, please send more like it!!

Character asks: RJ and Casey and Jarrod (separately??)
RJ
•Favorite thing about them
-Chillness, always has a way to stay calm throughout any situation but it also helps that he's a mentor. Positive reinforcement is the best way to get the point across.
•Least favorite thing about them
-bananas on pizza...WHY
•Favorite line
-"I'm having a moment of weakness"

-RJ/Camille, I'd be intrigued to see their interactions as friends. Like would Camille get frustrated as he explains modern times in a riddle like way?
•OTP
-oh boy here we go, RJ/Casey and RJ/Merrick. Don't deny it RJ and Casey had a thing going on there and personally I'd love the two wolf guys to vibe together.(I didn't draw an animaria styled wedding outfit for nothing guys, I'll post it later)
•NOTP
-none atm
•Random headcanon
-he's obsessed with how things all circle around each other. It's both a hobby and philosophy of his, like just flowing with life like it's the wind. Let it take you anywhere is what he says to himself.
RJ also has whole room dedicated to building lego structures.
•Unpopular opinion
-would've loved to have seen some exploration on his preference. He's a pansexual himbo and I will die on that hill!
•Song that i associates with them
•Favorite picture(s)

Casey Rhodes
•Favorite thing about them
-curiosity, always felt that he had some odd curious feeling in his heart throughout the season. Mainly steming from why he was chosen to be the red ranger and stuff.
•Least favorite thing about them
-nothing really, maybe the battlizer looked a bit clunky?
•Favorite line
-"I don't want any problems"
•BrOTP
-Casey/Lily, big sister vibes and they are just everything to me as good friends
•OTP
-Casey/RJ and Casey/Jarrod. I just love their dynamics(how did ships make me want to write a whole jungle fury au is beyond me but I'm happy I got to that🤷🏾‍♂️😭)
•NOTP
-Casey/Lily. I'd prefer them as friends and nothing more tbh, plus Theo/Lily is so good.
•Random headcanon
-he's definitely giving me the gay but undecided vibes, like still trying to figure things out. He'd be a pretty attentive boyfriend imo, like always trying to make sure his partner is comfortable.
Oh and Casey definitely got fired from the zoo for sleeping in the tiger dens and to get back at the zoo he released the tigers back into the wild.(petty as fuck 😭) don't worry though the tigers enjoy his company.
•Unpopular opinion
-nothing atm
•Song that i associates with them

Why is the second one such meme material😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jarrod
•Favorite thing about them
-his character development throughout the whole season was just top notch, he's one of my favorite human antagonist.
•Least favorite thing about them
-nothing tbh
•Favorite line
-"I am him!"
•BrOTP
-Jarrod/Lily, would be perfect friends
•OTP
-Jarrod/Camille and Jarrod/Casey. I love both pairings(au stuff makes me steer to the one with Casey but both ships are great)
•NOTP
-none atm
•Random headcanon
-Jarrod tries to relive his childhood since his was kind of rough but it's never too late to embrace your inner child. In this universe there would be a Dairanger anime and that's definitely a show that got him through some stuff when moving through foster homes.
Dai shi scrambled through Jarrod's memories while possessing him and found the dairanger ones and while meaningless to the being he made an oc of sorts when he found a liking to Shadam(the oc being Long) and he was going to use the form in the final battle but was killed before then.
•Unpopular opinion
-They should've adapted Rio's outfit and had Jarrod wear it, could you imagine how sick that would've looked on him
•Song that i associates with them

If I Had Your Life (YTTD spoilers for the full game)
A bloody smell wafted through the air. It filled anyone who stepped into the room with a metallic feeling in their lungs, and the dreary background and horrific setting that the place was currently in was no short of bone-chilling.
The main game had finished after the brutal deaths of the cheerful and friendly Joe Tazuna, and the quiet and aloof Kai Satou. One was still a high school student, the other a man who was the homemaker for another participant in the game. What was once a psychological and mental warfare between different minds trying to decide whose time it was to go, ended in a bloodbath that left two people dead.
For Rio Ranger though, this wasn't just a scene of a tragic event that'll traumatize and scar the unlucky people still remaining.
"This place is awesome! It's an all I can take clothe selection!"
A cocky laughter erupted out of the doll's voice box, the boy posing with his hands out while he was alone by himself. He was having the time of his (admittedly only three year old) life in the room he was in.
To him, it was not only a display of what happens when you let your emotions and trust in others get the better of you, it also meant one of his favorite parts of seeing a human's corpse: he could take anything from them without restriction. Moments like these were when he felt the most powerful.
Approaching the decaying body of the highschooler out in the corner, he put a hand against one of the tubes that pierced through his body and sucked the life out of him, rubbing it as he looked at how the poor boy's blood seeped out of him.
"Hah... that cheesehead's methods of execution aren't bad, but I can do way better. You should be thankful, you know. If it were me running your death, you would've been having a worse, worse time. And I'd have made sure to give your little best friend a small glimmer of hope just to crush it when she realizes she'll be the reason you die."
Ranger put a hand on Joe's face, cupping his cheek as he worked his way up to his hair.
"I could go with having another thing to add onto my hair. This clip isn't half bad... it's mine now. Thanks, Joeker."
He took the hairclip out of the dead body's hair, putting it on his own ginger sides as he felt a finger against it. He sighed in slight satisfaction and gratification.
"Not too shabby. Thanks for that. I'll pass it on to Chidouin; and I'm coming for that school uniform of hers next. These shoulders aren't for the world to see, ya know? Don't you worry boy, she's going to have a ton of fun on my floor. And when it's my turn to run the Main Game? Well, I hope you don't start coaching her from above. Wouldn't want her to end up the same as you did now, would you?"
Ranger giggled callously as he put his thumb against Joe's neck, pressing hard against it before flipping it up as his lifeless head bobbled up and down a little, prompting another giggle out of the doll.
"Now then... you."
Ranger's voice growled and lowered when his eyes met the collapsed homemaker on the ground, his footsteps echoing through the quiet room as he approached him.
"Kai Satou... who the hell do you think you are? Trying to pull a trick like that in the Main Game? I knew you were a disappointment, but finding out you were a moron was news to me."
He sat himself on top of Kai's back, juggling one of his expression sticks in the open air as he talked to himself.
"Well, if there's one thing I can commend you for, it's that you managed to piss ol' Miley off! Thanks for that - I don't like her either. She thinks she's so much better than me... typical. It's no wonder she only runs the most boring and forgettable floors in this entire facility. There's no style or flair to what she does."
Ranger did a motion of waving his hands in front of him magically and hypnotizingly while talking about his co-floor master's less flashy and cinematic methods, as if to really emphasize the point.
"But I think what pisses me off more than anything is you. Nobody in this damn game got on my nerves more than you did. I just can't stand you..."
Ranger put more of his weight onto Kai's lifeless body as he sat on it, his grip on one of his expression sticks tightening.
"You had everything right in front of you. Dad gave you every opportunity to succeed, to be something he could be proud of. And yet, what did you even do with it, you bastard? You couldn't take a life if yours depended on it, and look where it got you. Under someone that he actually sees as a success story."
Ranger got up from where he stood, flipping Kai over from his back as he undid the apron from his body and took it in his hands, giving it a blank, emotionless stare.
"You even grew soft and started caring for the same family you were only supposed to grab info on... no matter what you did, you always fucked it up. What's your excuse this time? That the girl's daddy treated you like family? That they saw you as useful? That they- BULLSHIT! You had Dad right in front of you trying to turn you into something worth a damn and you cared more about a bunch of strangers that are worth nothing! Gave you this stupid apron too... you don't deserve to wear this shit. You never earned anything in your life."
He'd try to put it on himself, though groaned in irritation when he realized his frame was too small to actually wear it.
"Tch, it's too damn big. Around the waist you go then, with that stupid boxer's shirt."
He wrapped the apron tightly on top of the tank top he got from another participant earlier, before kneeling down to the deceased homemaker's level.
"No matter what you did, you were never up to par. But what makes me angrier more than anything is the fact that you gave up on trying to make him appreciate you. Because what, he was 'never satisfied no matter what I do'? That it? You're fucking weak. Do you even know... do you even understand... the things I would've done to have the life you had?"
His spare hand clenched into a fist, shoulders shaking as his arm trembled in an undescribable rage. His next words came out in what boomed as loud as a yell.
"You're a human! You don't start feeling that numbness when you try to understand an emotion that wasn't programmed in you! I need to find stuff that pisses me off just so I can feel even a bit of the emotions inside of me...! Because when I don't, I'm just... nothing! You don't understand how lucky you are!"
Ranger's emotions flared up even more, his eyes widening into a furious shape as his cold and monotone stare gave off the heat of a ticked off and confused AI.
"You gave up! Even with the blessing of being alive, you gave up on yourself - but most importantly, you gave up on Dad! You're a waste of a life! If I was given your life, I would've... I would've!"
He screamed an inhumane sound at the lifeless body.
"I would've made him proud tenfold, because I would be grateful, I would be thankful that he'd raise me, and I would've learned to be content! It's never impossible to make people feel proud of you - until you give up on yourself...! You had everything in front of you, emotions, a goal, something to be... and you threw it all away! It's you, it's always been you that has no determination, and you have no right to call me faulty ever again! Because you couldn't prove shit! And you know what? You're the reason Dad lost his mind and gave himself to Asunaro...! Because devoting anything less than everything to your parents was disrespectful! Because for decades, he didn't have a son he felt appreciated him!"
Ranger glared, and his words boomed into a howl that pierced ears.
"IF I HAD YOUR LIFE, I STILL WOULD'VE BEEN HIS MASTERPIECE! BECAUSE I'M BETTER THAN YOU, AND YOU KNOW IT!"
An overload in Ranger's system occured, miniscule clouds of steam blowing through out of his ears as he violently rushed into Kai's corpse and kicked it's head with a sounding and savage kick that sent it across the room, the doll breathing in heavily as he tried to regain control of his own programming and thoughts.
"Haaah... haah... hah. Gh... ugh."
He fell onto one knee for a bit, the overwhelming amount of emotions he felt in a single instance becoming too much for his AI to handle as he took time to recover, before he'd finally get up and start walking the opposite way, almost limping on the way out as he mumbled something to himself on the way out.
"I'm Rio Ranger... and Gashu Satou... is a father of two, but a proud father of one. And that son... is me."

Introduction
OOC post to explain some things about this blog. This blog focuses on an au in which Rio Ranger is human, simple as that. Feel free to ask him questions.
This blog also is going to be used to experiment with my art a bit so if you see the style change a lot, that’d be why.
Header and icon are bound to change at some point.
Final thing, there will probably be spoilers to chapter 3B here. I don’t plan on tagging them, so view at your own risk.
