"According to the criterion of stipend, the haseki, or favorite concubine, enjoyed the greatest status in the imperial harem after the valide sultan. The haseki, a slave concubine and no blood relation to the reigning sultan, ranked higher than the sultan's own sisters and aunts, the princesses of the dynasty." - The Imperial Harem: Women and Sovereignty in the Ottoman Empire by Leslie P. This red and golden kaftan was first worn by Şah Sultan in the twenty-second episode of the third season of Magnificent Century. When she wore it again in the twenty-eighth episode, the kaftan's neckline had been drastically altered. This new version is next seen on Mihrimah Sultan in the eighth episode of the fourth season.
Magnificent Century: Kösem used the kaftan twice, first on Menekşe Hatun in the twenty-sixth episode of the first season and then on Madame Margaret (later Melek Hatun) in the third episode of the second season.

Hatice just straight up doesn't care about her children, huh... Hürrem, Mahidevran, Hafsa Sultan, Şah Sultan they all deeply care about their children and do anything and everything for them but Hatice is out here mourning some dick. I get it, you loved him but you have children!!!! Think about them, they're also an extension of your lost lover, love them!!!!! Instead she's grown bitter and detached

I think Beyhan won't prompt Hatice to seek revenge precisely because she likens her to herself a bit too much*. She knows that Hatice is still grieving, that her wound is way fresh and very staunchly stresses the fact that she needs all possible support she could be given in such a moment. To Beyhan, it's like Hatice isn't even in the state to act on her feelings, because the pain and helplessness are just this big, or at least shouldn't be in that state, because "she has responsibilities", "she has to endure" (E83). She can only dwell on everything and try to process it, rely on "time" to help her heal and take solace in her children just like Beyhan herself has. I feel the reason why Beyhan so firmly insisted for Şah to act before something else happens, before "the dynasty gets destroyed" is not just because she herself can't, but also because in Beyhan's eyes, Şah is the only one who can. If it's about the welfare of the dynasty, Şah is the one who should maintain order, as she is the person who positions herself as unaffected and capable and the rest are away in mourning, 'too lead by their emotions'. If it's about vengeance, Şah is the one who should pursue it for all of their sakes. And as to why she may can't, why she holds back, why she waits, Beyhan can think of one single motive: her sister is afraid to face Hürrem in order not to lose too and, in a more metaphorical sense, afraid to face the cumulative source of hurt itself (that includes his majesty), leaning on her own 'selfish' comfort instead. Just like Beyhan.
*after what happened to Ibrahim, as she understandably couldn't before, no matter how hard Hatice tried to empathize.

Magnificent Century hive mind I once again need your help. I know the names of Nurbanu’s and Selim’s daughters are Ismihan, Gevherhan and Şah. While I can differ their adult selfs, I haven’t been able to identify which one is which when they are kids. So if anyone knows who is who in this picture, that would be very helpful for me.

I might remember incorrectly,so correct me if I am wrong, but it was said that she was in service for 6 years. That could be referring to six years of being Kalfa, which would mean she received rank in 1516,that would make sense as it would mean Mahidevran and Gulshah, were already there, Mustafa was born and their relationship would start at that time. It also explains how close Nigar, Daye and sumbul are, they could have served them back in Manisa. However, she would not receive rank as soon as she arrived, I can imagine her spending some time in harem as a potential concubine, where Daye noticed her for hard working and intelligent nature, bonded and she introduced her as harem kalfa. That would mean she was in harem as a regular concubine for some time.
Another question is when she was kidnapped. Considering she spent good enough time in her motherland to remember it, even learn russian from her grandmother and being still fluent after all those years, I would assume she was around Hurrem's age, when kidnapped. In the best case scenario, she would have been bought immediately and spent little to no time in the slave market,so to add this up: around 17 years of her time in motherland + several years as Çarye ( it should include time to get used to the new environment, learn Turkish and gain mutual trust and bond to high ranking servant, possibly Daye, with whom she has mother-daugther relationship) + 6 years of her time as kalfa and her age by the time of 1522 would be about 25+ in my opinion, making her birth date 1497 or possibly(even likely) earlier. That would mean she gave birth in late thirties/yearly forties(considering it was actually common in the Ottoman empire and even quite the average age of harem servants to marry and give birth), that would mean she married for the first time some time before and she would have been around 40 or bit above when she was set to marry again, which again would have been normal in ottoman empire, especially if it was urgent. So she could have been in her late 40's, early 50's, when she died. Gray marks are actually quite deceiving in the show, pre time skip Gulfem, Mahidevran, sah and Suleyman have no gray markings despite Mahidevran being 44-45, Gulfem a bit older and Sah and Suleyman even greater In age, while Hafsa had her own hair even in her sixties. Gray markings actually appeared only after timeskip, possibly to keep up with Hurrem, whose actress was changed, while others remained the same. Even Fidan hatun got gray markings despite being quite young compared to others, as she arrived in harem when Hurrem married suleyman, her friend Fatma was Mustafa's favourite, so she was somewhere close to their age, that would make her no more than 30 yeas after time skip and in late 30's, when she for gray markings. So, even if Nigar was in late 40's yearly 50's, she would not get Gray marks.
In the show, Hatice was married for six months before she widowed, if I remember correctly. Proper time for an ottoman princess to marry was 17 years, that is actually the age when Shah, Hurrem and Suleyman considered marrying Mihrimah off, so if that happened to Hatice, that would make her only 17-18 in 1520. I can imagine, Hafsa setting her marriage as soon as she reached the proper age, so she would not "fade away in sadness", in her mind that would have been right decision to make, so I would say she was not even 20 in 1520. I'd estimate her date of birth to be 1501 or more likely 1502.
Fatma could be younger than Hatice, as she represents herself as younger than Hurrem, so at any rate she would have been born after 1503, that would also explain why she mentions Hatice so much, but not other sisters, who were probably much older than her.

This silver necklace was first worn by Hatice Sultan in the twenty-sixth episode of the second season of Magnificent Century. It was also worn by Efsun Hatun four episodes later with an additional pendant attached to it. The necklace appeared again on Nurbanu Sultan in the third episode of the fourth season, as well as briefly on Nurbanu's daughter Şah Sultan in the final episode of the series.
The necklace was also worn by Atike Sultan in the first episode of the second season of Magnificent Century: Kösem.

What is your favourite Şah Sultan scene?
Hello!
A really pleasurable question, thank you!🥰 I am sorry you had to wait soo long for my reply, but now I have some days off work and intend to be more active on tumblr (hopefully ;).
I am first and foremost a sucker for anything Sah/Hatice - I adore their complicated yet heartwarming dynamic - there is plenty of tension also due to the clash of their personalities, but also a lot of care and moving on past their differences. The episode where Hati is missing and Şah worries so much about her is a great one for that. Plus their last conversation when they decide together that no matter what blood is thicker than water and they hug. And I love Şah's look in that one, the hairdo looks so good on her, i had to include a pic / thanks to Plami for reminding me of that one <3/
Tumblr media
Also a small moment Sol reminded me of - when she and Gülfem go in the carriage and are attacked by bandits, Şah is her normal tough and calm self when the bandit threatens her, but when the bandit goes after Gülfem, her facade immediately visibly drops and she becomes very anxious.. I truly love these moments when she breaks from this “cool and unmoved” mode. And I generally love such small moments for the characters in the show, you can always notice new details upon each rewatch :)
Sah being all momma bear to Esmahan, particularly when her daughter was recovering from her head injury
Sah interceding on Mustafa’s behalf to Suleiman and then being the supportive aunt together with Hatice and giving him advice (and all the while her distress was also visible)
The moment during Mihrimah’s wedding when she voiced her own pain connected with having been forced to marry the man of her parents choosing and speaking for all her sisters too at the same time, it’s a very meaningful small moment for her, revealing that even a pragmatic like her was hurt by being unable to choose her partner in life (which also led to her feelings of jealousy Hatice was given a chance once).
Her last scene and saying goodbye to Mercan - her disillusionment with power games, her resolution to retire and find inner peace elsewhere, her quiet pain yet still revealing her emotions in subtle way
For badass Sah, I loved her in that intrigue that she set up against Hürrem to push her to enthrone Bayezid, she truly carried it out like a professional
Şah standing up to Lutfi and calling him out on what he did to that prostitute
