Decorative Sunday
Last week, we brought you black and white images of 16th century to the early 19th century European decorative lace work from La dentelle ancienne, style et technique by the German lace scholar and collector Alfred von Henneberg, with a foreword by the German art historian Wilhelm Pinder, and published in Paris by the decorative arts publisher A. Calavas for the Librairie des Arts Décoratifs in 1931. This week we present all the color plates from this volume demonstrating the various standard patterns used to make lace designs.
Click on the images to see the captions.  The patterns shown here are called “bud,” “shell,” and “toilé.” The patterns are connected to each other with thread designs known as “brides,” which may be simple or extended. Other terms in the captions are fond de neige, a pattern found in Binche lace, a type of bobbin lace that originated in the town of Binche, Belgium, and “pillow-work,” lacework that is created using the surface of a pillow as its ground.

drop doodle requests in my asks <3
i don’t have enough brain left at the end of the day to think of things to draw, but I need to draw something to stay sane ~~
Here are some things I unexplainably enjoy/want to draw:
- Trollhunters
- Community (NBC show)
- Green Eggs and Ham
- Gravity Falls
- Sofia the First, but only Cedric?? only Cedric
- Puss in Boots

tbh I don’t know what it’s called bc I’ve seen it under a million different names 😭😭 genetic anthropology, paleogenomics, molecular anthropology, etc but essentially I would rlly love to research ancient human DNA :]

podficcing woes
so i says to myself, Self, do you wanna redo some podfic done three years ago with better voice-work, because i know you care about that and also you need a fucking project to keep the weather from driving you crazy?
and Self says, that sounds awesome. hey, do you remember that one from three years ago that's half an hour long, and two fics spliced together because they're closely related and also they're fully SFXed which means you had some extreme dynamic range to deal with when switching scenes and also there's a fucking air raid?
and i say, yeah. shit, that took a long time to do.
we should do that, says Self.
...
...
(Actually it turned out really lovely and I'm looking forward to making it live.)
If you want to see what i'm talking about?

So describing this thing... this is the display of the Digital Audio Workstation I use - those coloured blocks in the middle are visuals of the samples I was working with. Big controls are up in the toolbar overhead. Track specific controls are in that left column - the volume slider bar, for example, and that high-lighted M means the selected track is currently on mute. The bar on the bottom holds Play, Pause, Stop, and Record buttons, a timestamp, and a thumbnail of the project as a whole. Each white block in that thumbnail represents one of the coloured blocks you see on the main screen only all of it, everywhere, all at once.
Yes, that is a quite complicated thumbnail.

perhaps the most unexpected benefit of doing my own t shots is that the same skillset translates really well to loading samples into gels
#I remember back in bio lab 101 being like wow I’m weirdly good at loading dna gels for a beginner#and I became the designated gel loader for my group#but yeah I realize that it’s prob bc I self inject#esp now that I load protein gels and really tiny dna wells#bc it is the same idea of going the right depth into a small target with a fine point#keeping it steady#and releasing the fluid at the right pace#without bubbles#and it’s weird that I’d just pick up gel loading so fast without having former experience#bc when it comes to physical coordination and finesse I tend to take a lot of practice to do things#like I AM capable of fine motor skills but I don’t pick new ones up easily#so I was surprised that I was a natural with gels but then I realized I wasn’t#I just had been doing essentially the same thing for a while prior#and also in a situation where if you mess up you get immediate physical consequences of it hurts more#so yeah. Im getting a good grade in loading gels. something that’s normal to want#like compared to other lab techniques my gel loading just started out so much better#esp in regards to doing it well with speed#a lot of other stuff I can do but I can’t do fast without sacrificing accuracy#like it still takes me forever to pipette out a lot of samples#I’ve gotten much better but I’m still comparatively slow#enough so that If Im doing sterile stuff i either have to do small sections at a time or light the burner#while other people are fast enough to open all the tubes and pipette and close them without issue#but boy I can load a protein gel or dna gel with the maximum amount per well#456 words#lab tag#scopophobua tw
