Prompt: Axl finds out that Sean and Sue are engaged, and actually reacts nicely.

Written in Axl’s perspective 😋

Axl was in the kitchen, rummaging through all of the Heck cupboards in search for the right stuff to make himself a sandwich. He slammed shut a cupboard door before likewise closing the refrigerator’s, setting down all of his newly-obtained, edible plunder on the kitchen counter-table. A bag of bread, only a third of the way full. A small container of leftover ham. Three and a half slices of cheese. Some lettuce. A tomato. One bottle of ketchup, almost empty. And one nearly, almost-as-empty bottle of mustard.

Axl sighed happily to himself, breathing in the scent of his pre-conceived sandwich. Peace and quiet at last. He hadn’t had a particularly long day at work (although talking your mouth off about whatever bathroom products your company wanted you to sell next could sometimes take its own disturbing, mental toll). He wasn’t particularly hungry or starving either, but Axl Heck was always up for filling up the endless hole in his stomach.

But mostly, Axl had retreated into the kitchen to avoid his best friend Sean and his sister Sue, who had been dating for a while. A long while. Lately, it seemed like Axl hadn’t been able to escape from the love-stricken couple. If he was in the living room, they’d be sitting next to him on the couch—doing anything but watching the TV. Instead, they’d both be cuddled up real close to one another, whispering and giggling softly into each other’s ears in such a sickening, loving manner that it’d make his stomach turn. If he was in his room, he’d hear their voices coming through the hole in the shared wall to his room—talking to each other non-stop and frequently arguing about which one was the “cuter” in the relationship. If he had finally had enough and fled the house, standing outside in the chilly, winter cold: there they’d be, horsing around and chasing each other out in the icy snow like two hopelessly ill and lost twelve-year-olds. It seemed that, no matter where Axl went, there the dreaded sight of his sister and best friend together would be, too, always holding their hands close; constantly making lame, cheesy puns about fated love and star-crossed romance; and just being completely and absolutely sickenly sweet with each other.

It wasn’t “Donasue’s” (Lexie liked to call the ghastly destined couple that; Axl would never be caught dead using such a hideous word) sickening sweetness, however, that put Axl over the edge the most. Sure, Sue and Sean were cringe-worthy as jack with their “couple-cutesy-ness” and their wildly unstoppable, cheesy, romantic antics, but still, it wasn’t the real reason why Axl wanted to gouge his eyes out and fall over dead whenever his sister and best friend came into view, fingers interlocked like even kingdom come couldn’t separate them. Rather, it was something completely different that made Axl sick, mad, and frustrated—all at once—whenever he saw his best friend and sister enjoying themselves with each other.

It was that every time Axl saw his best friend and sister with one another, he couldn’t help but think that they seemed to fit so well together… That’s what made him so furious and mentally seethe at the very sight of them. Frustration more at himself than anyone else. The discrepancy of the problem made him mad—madder than the fact that he still couldn’t seem to figure out just what his best friend Sean could ever, possibly see in his terribly lame, dork of a sister Sue (although to be fair, Sean had always been the more upstanding, straight-laced, “nice”-guy type between the two of them, no matter how hard Axl had tried to steer the guy in the right direction…) Because for the life of him, Axl Redford Heck, with a scrappy mind made of lightning and a bachelor’s degree in business, honestly couldn’t find anything wrong with his best friend and sister dating each other. Honestly. Whether it be logical, legal, or otherwise. The way his best friend made his sister happy and brought out a wide smile on her face; the way her dorky, overly-cheery self seemed to somehow complete his already pretty perfect, Donahue-y world… Axl just couldn’t come up with an answer. It just wouldn’t come to him, thought Axl with irritation to himself, forcefully cutting open the heart of a tomato. And it probably never would…

The sound of the front door opening and a series of distant, but familiar, giggles made Axl instantly perk up from cutting the last slice of his lone tomato. His head quickly shot up from the cutting board, catching the sight of his best friend and sister entering the kitchen, who had just come in from the freezing, outside cold. Sue and Sean were still fully covered up in their heavy, winter jackets and clothes. The two of them were smiling widely and brightly at each other, bodies and hands linked together like the pair of disgustingly devoted, twisted lovers that they were.

“Ick,” Axl immediately said as his sister and best friend made their way farther into the kitchen. He scambled over the kitchen counter-table, reaching for whatever ingredients were already prepared so he could hurriedly throw them together to make his half-finished sandwich. “Guess I’m out of here before the two of you star—”

“Actually, Axl, we kind of wanted to…” Sean started, unusually hesistant. Axl raised a curious eyebrow as his best friend and sister seemed to pass a few nervous, uncertain glances before his sister looked up at his best friend again, giving him a sure, but still skeptical nod.

“… wanted to tell you something,” Sue finished with a tense strain in her voice, hugging Sean closer and still holding her boyfriend’s hand.

Axl’s eyebrow rose higher as he watched his sister and best friend momentarily bring their heads together and start whispering to one another—something about who should tell who what first and how they should go about telling it—before the two distraught lovers seemed to have reached a final, unanimous decision and returned their attention forward, staring uncertainly at him.

Axl’s perplexity only increased as he witnessed the doubtful, nervous glances of the two people before him suddenly transform into bright, beaming smiles as they both raised their interlocked arms.

“WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!!” the two of them shouted, Sean proudly holding up Sue’s hand. Axl’s eyes immediately recognized a small, shiny ring glittering around his sister’s fourth finger.

“We’re engaged!!” Sue clarified with delight. She was clearly excited, jumping up and down beside her boyfriend's—err, fiancé’s—side. The blissful glee and joy spread throughout her body and face as it was apparent she couldn’t keep her secret or contain her excitement anymore.

“… Oh,” Axl replied slowly. He put down his plate, wiping his hands. “Well then, I guess congratulations are in order!” He quickly rounded the counter-table, hurrying up to his sister and best friend while offering his right hand. “Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! Yay!”

After shaking Sean’s hand and also attempting to congratulate Sue by hastily reaching out to her and giving her a very brief, half-hug, Axl had already regained his usually casual, care-free momentum, looking to his best friend and sister with wide satisfaction and happiness.

“So, what’s next? Hey, I’m gonna be your best man, right?” Axl asked with eager cheerfulness. And a little bit of carefulness, too, in case he wasn’t going to get picked…

Sean smiled, nodding and answering with a definite, emphatic “yes” as Axl smiled back brightly.

“Great! Oh—have you guys set a date yet?” Axl continued, firing away. He was about to turn around to grab his half-done sandwich and snag a bite to eat before Sue piped up with a very worried, concerned look on her face.

“W—W—Wait, hold it!” Sue interrupted with great alarm in her voice. Axl turned to look at his sister with confusion, Sue returning it with the same stare of puzzlement—plus some confounded doubt. “Something’s not right here.” Sue crossed her arms, giving Axl a highly skeptical look. “Sooooo you’re not mad at us for getting engaged… and you’re not going to make a bigger deal out of this?? Like when we first got together and you threw that temper-tantrum about ‘how bad parenting is going to end the world’? Or when you wouldn’t let us sit together on the couch and would constantly call Mom or Dad to make us stop sitting next to each other? Or when we announced that we were ‘officially’ dating and you’d start waving your hands and make puking noises every time we came into the room??”

“What? No!! Why would I do that?” Axl answered with strong, and seemingly honest, astonishment on his face. Sue and Sean narrowed their eyes and increased their intense, nervous gaze at him, but Axl just shook his head and leaned against the table as he continued to speak. “No, I mean… I know I can be a bit over-reactive sometimes, but… Iunno, I think… I might actually be kind of cool, you know, with the idea of you guys hanging out—err, being this way—with each other…” Axl offered up the smallest, most nervous and shyest of smiles while his sister gave him an openly surprised look and his best friend raised a tentative eyebrow.

“I mean, look,” Axl started, taking a deep breath. He shifted a little in his position against the table as he motioned to the loving couple, starting with Sean. “Not to make this weird or anything, but you and I go way back—like, since we were kids or whenever our moms decided to set us up on those lame, kiddy ‘playdates’ or whatever. And… out of my whole group of friends, you’re the most loyal, honest, and trustworthy guy I know—I mean, other than myself, of course! No, but seriously, dude, you’re the best; you’ve always had my back, and I know I wouldn’t mind giving up mine for yours…” Axl turned to his sister. “And Sue, you’re… a dork… but, I think… that’s part of what makes you so great, too. I mean, between you, Brick, and myself, you’re probably the nicest one out of all three of us… You’re always too cheerful, sweet, and wayyyyy too optimistic for your own good, which is totally a dorky thing to do and can be really annoying—sometimes—but, I think… all of that dorkiness is probably what ultimately makes you a very caring, happy, and awesome person to be around.” Axl sighed deeply and shrugged. “So yeah, I dunno. I guess I was just thinking about how I kind of liked seeing the nicest guy and the sweetest girl I know coming together… which, in a way, I think, kinda makes you guys perfect for each other…”

As the eldest Heck finished his little speech, he looked to his best friend and sister, waiting for a response. But Sean was just staring at him with widely surprised eyes as he held Sue, who only had her mouth open in utter shock.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is,” Axl stated, clapping his hands together, “if there’s any two people who are going to spend the rest of their lives together, I’m glad it’s my best friend…” Axl turned to look at Sue. “And my little sister,” he finished with a smile.

“Aaaww, Axl, that’s SOOOO SWEET!!” Sue exclaimed, flying forward. And before Axl could protest or do anything to stop this pair of sickening, twisted lovers, it was already too late—they had both already brought their arms around him, locking him into a very tight, firm, and loving embrace.

“Thanks, Ax-man,” Sean said, patting Axl on the back as the latter found himself suffocating from the cozy warmth of his best friend and sister’s double-hug.

“S—So,” Axl coughed as the very grateful, clearly touched couple finally let him go. Axl casually waved to the motley arrangement of foods scattered about the kitchen counter-table, affecting the fine, smooth flair of a business associate. “Could I interest the newly-engaged couple in a little pre-celebratory, post-engagement party??” Axl gave a sharp, playful grin as his hopeful pair of customers looked on. “There’s only a slice and half of cheese left, but that’s fine—you guys can share!”

Sue and Sean smiled, the happily “sold-to” couple nodding brightly as they came forward and joined Axl around the Hecks’ kitchen counter-table. The trio of brother, sister, and best friend then all gladly came together to merrily enjoy some ultimately okay-tasting, half-finished ham sandwiches—and to happily discuss their exciting future ahead.

I’M SO, SO, SO SORRY I WASN’T ABLE TO GET THIS DONE BY THIS PAST WEEKEND LIKE I SAID WOULD LEOL. FAMILY AND CHRISTMAS STUFF CAME UP SO I KIND OF SLACKED OFF A BIT AND TOOK IT EASY LOLOLOL. BUT HEY, at least I got it out on Tuesday, which is when the show would typically come out if it wasn’t on a break :‘33 My next one should be up by the end of the week-end-ish, too, but y'all just ignore me and don’t believe anything I say from now on leoleol. Anyways, on to the “real” a/n’s stuff:

WHOO!! Can’t believe we’ve made it to the 10th prompt!! WOW… never thought I’d make it this far in terms of writing out and “publishing” a story… especially one that’s a fanfiction lololol :‘33c  Hope y'all are enjoying the stories so far!! leoleol~

Also an important update: so after having reached the 10th story, I’ve gone back and counted how many prompts I have left to finish. Turns out, I have exactly 16 submitted prompts that I have left to plan, write out, and post. My ideal goal is to finish all of them by the time the show’s winter break is over—yes, I know that is an overly ambitious goal; at most, I’ll probably be able to write and post about 4-6 over the break. At any rate, once I’ve finished all of these prompts, we’ll have a total of 26 stories by the end of this collection of one-shots. As a result, I have also decided to write an additional 4 stories—of my own idea and liking—which will nicely round out this series of ficlets to a total of 30 (unless I get any other crazy ideas hahaha; hopefully I won’t :v *fingers crossed*). So yeah, that’s kind of my plan right now and what y'all can expect to look forward to :333 The self-composed prompts will be randomly interspersed within the 26 requested ones—just whenever I feel inspired or find the motivation to write (although I already have some ideas listed out… >:pp). In fact, the next one will probably be a self-composed fic unless I change my mind last-minute (it’s the extra one I wrote for this story).

‘Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision’ Award Recipient Announced

(PRESS RELEASE) CHICAGO, IL — The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness (NCCVEH) has announced the recipient of the seventh annual “Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award” as Ms. Shavette L. Turner, vice president, Children’s Vision Services at Prevent Blindness Georgia (PBGA), in recognition of her leadership and expansion of the “Children’s Vision Services of Prevent Blindness Georgia” program. The award will be formally presented at the NCCVEH Annual Meeting, to be held virtually, on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021.

The highest honor that the NCCVEH bestows, the Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award recognizes significant efforts by an individual or group of individuals to improve public health approaches for children’s vision and eye health at the state or national level. The award was established in 2014 by the Advisory Committee of the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness to commemorate Bonnie Strickland and her groundbreaking work to establish a comprehensive system for children’s vision in the U.S. She served as Director of the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, before her retirement in 2014.

Ms. Turner has been named as the 2021 Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award recipient for her unique approach to helping disadvantaged and underserved youth across Georgia access vision and eye care, with emphasis in Hall County where there is a significantly large Latinx population who experience barriers to eye care. She observed the significantly high rate of children who did not pass a certified vision screening (23 percent) in Hall County, compared with the state average of 8 – 10 percent. She also observed that many children were not receiving the follow-up care they needed when she returned for screening the next year and some children’s vision had deteriorated.

“Shavette Turner began to advocate for us to put even more efforts to ‘complete the circle of care’ of children—to not be content to vision screen and refer, but to work even harder to help provide access to follow-up eye exams for the children who do not pass vision screenings and to provide eyeglasses for those who needed them,” said Jill Thornton, President and CEO of PBGA.

Turner employed a variety of methods to break through the many barriers to eyecare – coordinating the assistance of more than 200 volunteers. She leveraged resources from Prevent Blindness, as well as the local eye care community, Univision, United Healthcare and National Vision, Inc. to provide services for a vulnerable group of immigrant children who were not receiving needed eye care services.

Turner and her team of volunteers provided vision screenings to every elementary school child in the county school system – 9,005 children in 20 elementary schools from kindergarten through 5th grades. For the 1,665 who did not pass the vision screening, all were invited for free comprehensive eye exams and were eligible to receive free prescription eyeglasses, if needed. Eye examinations were provided during Saturday clinics thanks to the donation of time and talent from pediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists and Spanish-language translators. Additionally, Turner secured in-kind donations of equipment, eye drops, and fabrication of prescription eyeglasses. As a result, 93 children were identified as having Amblyopia and almost 300 students are starting the school year in brand new glasses thanks to Turner’s efforts.

“The children of Hall County hold a special place in my heart. I know that every school day, these children face language barriers and sit for special placement testing as a result. Not being vision ready to learn was something I knew we could do something about,” said Turner. “Our vision provider partners came through for us in a major way, and we’re grateful.”

Past recipients of the Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award include Logan Newman, founder of the East High School Vision Care Program; Anne L. Coleman, MD, MPH, UCLA Stein Eye Institute; the Vision in Preschoolers (VIP) Study Group; Richard Bunner, retired from the Ohio Department of Health; Sean P. Donahue, MD, PhD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Vanderbilt University; the Illinois Eye Institute (IEI) at Princeton Vision Clinic; and the Pediatric Physicians’ Organization at Children’s (PPOC).

Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, added, “The work that Shavette Turner has done, and continues to do, to provide children with the bright and healthy future they deserve through access to quality eyecare, is truly inspiring. We look forward to working with her and her team to learn her best practices so we can expand those to children’s vision programs across the country.”

Global birth season study links environment with disease risk

Studies have shown that babies born in winter tend to have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes at some point, while fall babies have a greater lifetime risk of depression. What might explain these curious connections? In a new analysis of health information from more than 10 million patients living in three countries and five different climates, data scientists have found that a woman's exposure to certain seasonal or environmental factors during pregnancy may affect her offspring's lifetime disease risk.

Sunday night, in front of an estimated 25,000 fans watching in-person from Las Vegas and more tuning in live on television across North America, action sports superstar Travis Pastrana celebrated Evel Knievel during the unprecedentedHISTORY® live event, “Evel Live.”

Travis Pastrana Jumps Caesars Palace Fountains as Tribute to Evel Knievel

Produced in partnership with Nitro Circus, “Evel Live” saw Pastrana pay homage to Knievel’s legacy as he set out to recreate three of the American legend’s most iconic jumps. Pastrana pushed the limits even further though, breaking Knievel’s famous car and Greyhound bus jump records before completing the epic Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life 50 years ago. Shortly after Pastrana took a celebratory dive into the Caesars Palace fountains to cap off the night, #EvelLive trended at #1 on Twitter.

“I’m thrilled to have had this opportunity to honor Evel Knievel, whose guts and showmanship created the foundation for action sports,” Travis Pastrana said afterward. “Evel pushed himself and flew further on a motorcycle than anyone thought possible. So with this modern day tribute, we wanted to bridge generations – from my parent’s generation who was inspired by Evel to the generation after me who may not know much about the original stuntmen who paved the way – HISTORY® and Nitro Circus wanted to show just how incredible his accomplishments were. To be able to do that in Las Vegas and at Caesars Palace, where Evel’s legend was born, is so awesome.”

In just three hours and under the pressure of a live TV broadcast, Pastrana first topped Knievel’s 1973 jump over 50 crushed cars by soaring more than 143 feet in the air over 52 vehicles. Then he surpassed Knievel’s 1975 jump over 14 buses, flying nearly four stories high and covering a jaw-dropping 192 feet to clear 16 modern-day Greyhound buses. In order to make room for the massive setup, these jumps required the production teams from HISTORY® and Nitro Circus to take over the space behind Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, Paris Las Vegas and Bally’s Las Vegas.

Afterward, Pastrana took to the streets with a police escort to ride to the Caesars Palace jump site. Fans quickly lined Las Vegas Boulevard, exchanging high-fives with Pastrana from taxis and the side of the road as anticipation for the finale built. The motorcade quickly closed The Strip.

Then Pastrana faced the Caesars Palace fountain jump that nearly took Knievel’s life a half-century ago after his infamous crash. As if that wasn’t daunting enough, given the expansion of Caesars Palace since Knievel’s ill-fated attempt, Pastrana had only a 200-foot run-in to accelerate to the 70-mph speed necessary to clear the fountain. Pastrana also had to contend with stifling heat reaching 102 degrees and, just before the event, potential thunderstorms. Even in ideal conditions and if he hit his speed marks perfectly, Pastrana would land with just a few feet to spare. But, after arcing over the fountains, Pastrana touched safely down on the landing ramp to the roaring crowd and a flash of pyrotechnics.

This electrifying event paid tribute to Evel Knievel in every possible detail. From Pastrana riding a Indian Scout FTR750, a modern day evolution of the flat track motorcycles of the past — and very different from the modern-day dirt bikes Pastrana usually rides – to the white leather suit and helmet decked out in American stars and stripes just like Knievel’s classic livery, these specifics illuminate how much Knievel achieved and the impact he has had on generations of fans.

“Evel Live” launched HISTORY’s second annual “Car Week” in breathtaking fashion. Upcoming “Car Week” programming includes “Hot Rods and Muscle Cars” (Monday, July 9), “Truck Wars” (Tuesday, July 10), “Speed Demons” (Wednesday, July 11) and “Hot Wheels: 50th Anniversary Special” (Thursday, July 12). North America can look forward to more daredevil thrills from Travis Pastrana and Nitro Circus this fall with the world debut of the “You Got This” tour, kicking off September 28. Pastrana will also throttle up on four wheels when he competes in the inaugural Nitro Rallycross, part of the groundbreaking Nitro World Games action sports competition, coming to Salt Lake City on September 22 and 23. Then in Spring 2019, Nitro Circus returns to Las Vegas in a big way, launching its first-ever resident stage show at Bally’s Las Vegas.

10 Things Your Eye Doctor Won't Tell You

A trip to the eye doctor isn't as simple as it seems. How to see clearly the next time you go in to read the charts. 1. "Optometrist, ophthalmologist -- what does it really matter?" For years it was as plain as that big "E" on the wall: Optometrists, who have a doctor of optometry degree, checked you for glasses, and ophthalmologists, who are M.D.s, treated you for eye diseases. But the lines have blurred, so to speak. Over the past two decades, all 50 states have widened rules to allow optometrists to treat many of the same medical conditions that M.D.s do. In Oklahoma, despite protests from the American Medical Association, optometrists can now perform some surgeries, too. While optometrists say that their degree now covers all the skills needed to treat eye diseases, many M.D.s still argue it's no substitute for medical school. Which should you use? A rule of thumb: For regular checkups and problems affecting the outside of the eye, such as allergies or dry eye, an optometrist is sufficient. (Two sites for locating good ones: the American Academy of Optometry's, and the American Optometric Association's.) But if you experience symptoms such as loss of vision or flashing light, or if your optometrist finds signs of a cataract or macular degeneration, it merits a visit to an M.D. 2. "Hang on, just a few more tests. Papa needs a new speedboat." Whether you see an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, most people should get their eyes checked about every two years, according to the AOA. A few tests are evergreen: the trusty eye chart, which gives a basic idea of what you can see; a refraction test, in which you look through a machine to determine your exact prescription needs; a cover test, using a paddle, which reveals how well your eye muscles work together; a test for glaucoma; and a "slit lamp" examination and retinal exam, which look for diseases inside your eye. But some "routine" tests for otherwise healthy patients are probably unnecessary -- especially if they're not included in the basic exam fee. A "visual field examination," in which a machine is used to check side vision, may be one such test, says Walter Beebe, M.D., a cornea specialist in Dallas. It can pick up advanced glaucoma or a brain tumor, he says, but unless symptoms or other signs warrant it, the test is probably not necessary. Another potential overkill fee: "photography of the eye." Many doctors will encourage it on the first visit, but, Beebe says, some want to repeat it every time. "It's hard to make a case for upwards of $100 for everybody who walks through the door," he says. 3. "Those $20 drugstore specs just might do the trick." It's a relatively minor but annoying sign of middle age: Small print starts to get a little blurry, making those stock tables maddeningly hard to read. The medical term is presbyopia, a hardening of the crystalline lens, and it's becoming more common as a nation of aging baby boomers start squinting their way through dinner menus. The solution many people quietly opt for is those drugstore reading glasses, which help magnify vision for a low-impact $10 or $20, versus five or 10 times that for prescription glasses. The problem with "drugstore readers" or "cheaters," says San Diego optician Carter Shrum, is that since they're mass-produced, the magnifying strength is the same for both eyes and is usually centered within each lens. That may be bad for you if that centering doesn't correspond well with the shape of your face or if, like many people, you have a different refractive error in each eye. And like any mass-produced product, says Minnesota optometrist Kerry Beebe, some readers are better than others. A good eye doctor can suggest which ones are best for your situation, Beebe says, or he can analyze them "to check that the powers are what and where they're supposed to be." 4. "These lenses will make your head swim." If you need bifocals but can't bear the idea of wearing lenses with etched-in lines, you have another option. Progressive lenses offer varied lens strengths like bifocals, but the varying prescriptions are graduated, so they're invisible to anyone but the wearer. Other than cost ($200 or more for the lenses alone), some progressives have a major drawback: They can be difficult to get used to, causing dizziness, headaches, even teeth grinding as the eyes adjust. When San Diego human resources director Debi Ives first tried them, she got dizzy, had trouble focusing and lost her balance on the stairs. "I couldn't see where my feet were going," she says. Adjusting to progressives can take from a few minutes to two weeks or longer; if you experience problems, have your glasses checked to ensure they were ground and fitted properly -- a good reason to ask about return and repair policies before you buy. A misplacement of the "near" zone, for example, can make a big difference. When Ives tried progressives again a year later, this time using larger lenses with less variation between zones, she was recoached on "pointing with her nose," rather than shifting her eyes to see different objects. "I've had much more success," she says. 5. "I have zero intention of handing over your contact lens prescription." Since the late 1970s, eye doctors have been required by law to hand over your eyeglass prescription after an exam so that you can buy glasses wherever you want. It wasn't until early 2004 that they had to do the same with contact lens scripts. Under the new law, a doctor can no longer require you to buy lenses from his office once the exam-and-fitting stage is complete. Char Pagar, an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission, points out that a contact lens prescription still isn't ready for release after an initial exam the way glasses are, but often requires one follow-up to ensure that the proposed lenses are right for you. However, "once the doctor is willing to sell you the lenses," Pagar says, "that fitting is complete." But not all doctors are readily handing over the scripts. Some, Shrum says, "will lead patients into the dispensing place and hand (the prescription) to a person working there." If your doctor balks at giving you your script, first remind him of the law; if you still meet with resistance, you can file a complaint at www.ftc.gov. In October 2004 the FTC sent warning letters to 25 lens prescribers and sellers who were allegedly violating the rule. 6. "Of course your child needs glasses. He's squinting, isn't he?" If your child is straining to see the chalkboard, don't assume glasses are the answer. Unfortunately, too many eye doctors do. A 2004 study by Vanderbilt University professor and pediatric ophthalmologist Sean P. Donahue found kids were more likely to be prescribed unnecessary glasses if they saw an optometrist or general ophthalmologist than if they went to a pediatric ophthalmologist. Donahue estimates almost one in five kids who wear glasses don't need them. Worse, superfluous glasses may cause headaches or even legitimate vision problems. A pediatric ophthalmologist is attuned to how kids' eyes develop, says David Granet, M.D., director of pediatric ophthalmology at UC-San Diego. "You have to understand those changes, or you can do the wrong thing." Rather than taking your child to your eye doctor, he says, let the pediatrician examine him during annual checkups and refer you to a specialist if needed; to locate specialists in your area, click here (scroll down to the map). If your child ultimately needs glasses, avoid mass retailers and use a shop specializing in kids' glasses since fitting their frames can be tricky. 7. "You can get glasses waaaay cheaper at Wal-Mart..." Since brand-new prescription glasses can easily cost hundreds of dollars, a good number of savvy consumers take their prescriptions elsewhere, often to mass chains or warehouse stores, looking for a break on price. And more often than not, they get it. A 2001 Consumer Reports study found that glasses averaged about $200 at independent shops and small eyecare chains and $180 at large chains and discounters. Within the latter category, some retailers offer even lower prices: The median cost of glasses at Wal-Mart, for example, is $140. But what do you give up when you go the megastore route? Some selection, particularly among the higher-end merchandise, more-personalized service, and that's about it. And what about shopping for frames on the Internet? Judy Reggio, a stay-at-home mother in Cranford, N.J., was hit with a serious jolt of buyer's remorse when she spotted her brand-new $400 DKNY frames for $100 less on a Web retailer's site. But the truth is, she's better off having paid the extra money. Ordering glasses online can be unduly complicated (do you really want to attempt to measure your own pupil distances?), and the nuances of a well-made pair of glasses are best handled at a literal bricks-and-mortar store, where you get a hands-on fitting and can more conveniently come back for adjustments. No matter where you shop for glasses, though, be sure your lenses are ground and fitted by a professional optician. To verify that you're dealing with a reputable outfit, look for technicians who have been certified by the American Board of Opticianry/National Contact Lens Examiners, which requires rigorous testing. 8. "...but whatever you do, don't skimp on the extras." When Brian Wade, a teacher in L.A., bought new glasses last year, he got scratch-resistant, polycarbonate lenses and paid $45 extra for an antiglare coating. But a few months later, his lenses were covered with scratches. He took them back to his optometrist and learned that the antiglare he chose was vulnerable to scratching regardless of the quality of lens beneath it. The technology behind coatings has improved a great deal in the past decade, says Janice Jurkus, a professor at the Illinois College of Optometry, but overall, "you get what you pay for." At the very least, look for a one-year warranty on coatings, Shrum says. Frames should be covered for defects for at least 90 days, but ideally, a full year. And paying a little extra, Shrum adds, can reap big rewards. Most vision-care plans, he says, cover a $75 frame, but if you spend as little as $25 more, "you'll get a three-times-better frame." Frames in the $100 to $150 range, he says, are typically made more carefully, with stronger plastic or metal, and hold their shape better. But anything over $200, experts agree, means you're likely paying for style or a designer name. 9. "My laser needs a tune-up." Laser surgery -- the most common form of refractive surgery, which alters the eye to correct vision -- continues to boom. In 2004 some 854,000 Americans had refractive surgery -- a 26% jump since 2001, according to Jobson Optical Research. While many people are under the impression that the laser surgery known as Lasik is a uniform procedure, in reality, several different companies make the lasers used in the procedure, and not all of them are created equal. Laser manufacturer Visx, which has the largest U.S. market share, is well regarded by many doctors. But even with the best equipment, surgeons must be consistent in getting their lasers updated regularly to help guarantee safe, precise performance. So when shopping for a laser surgeon, ask doctors how often they have to perform retreatments or enhancements -- as well as how often they have their laser upgraded. (In most cases, the answer should be at least once a year.) Two good places to check out laser options: the FDA's informational site at www.fda.gov/cdrh/lasik and www.SurgicalEyes.org. 10. "Nothing lasts forever -- not even laser surgery." Some studies of the newest forms of Lasik put your odds of 20/20-or-better vision at roughly 94 to 98%. Still, up to 10% of Lasik patients need a follow-up procedure or enhancement. But even with an enhancement, don't count on perfect vision forever. As the eyes age, you may still need reading glasses. Matt Wapner had Lasik in 1998, and his vision improved from 20/400 to 20/10 -- better than perfect. Shortly after, he started seeing halos at night and within a few years had regressed to 20/40. A lawyer in Hoboken, N.J., Wapner has since reverted to glasses. "I see so much crisper with glasses that I've started wearing them all the time," he says. While new versions of Lasik likely offer better long-term results than that, talk to your doctor about expectations. "If a patient says, 'I want to see as well as I do with glasses and want it guaranteed,' that's unrealistic," Kerry Beebe says. "A realistic expectation is that you'll be less dependent on your glasses."
