I’m looking at getting into watches with an automatic watch, probably automatic, in the range of $500 or less. Are there any brands or features you’d recommend looking into or avoiding?
Inflation has damaged the $300-$500 automatic range a bit, but there are still options from Orient (many options), Citizen (Promaster Dive), and Seiko (most of the Seiko 5 line). You can also find a few entry-level Hamiltons around $500, pushing into the $600-$700 range. With few exceptions, Swiss-made automatics generally don't get below this price point.
I would avoid microbrands just because it can make resale difficult and many of the popular microbrands have only been around for ~5 years or less. They almost all use proven automatic movements from Sellita, Miyota, or ETA, so servicing is rarely an issue -- it's mostly just about resale if your tastes change down the road.
As far as features, I think date is the most useful complication. Just be careful about setting the date because most automatic movements get "weird" if you set the date between 9pm and 3am. So always set the time first, making sure you've advanced past midnight, then set the date. Or if you know you're in the Bad Zone, move out of it, set the date, then advance it.

The whole production process for the collection is carried out in Switzerland, where it is conceived, quality-controlled, and assembled to the highest standards. Lawfully protected and used as a quality seal is the Swiss Made brand. We use Automatic Swiss Watches movements from Sellita and STP; these movements are carefully chosen to complement the aesthetics of the particular watch type. Due to the high quality of their manually crafted mechanisms and materials, Swiss watches may be worn for many lives. Everything is created internally, in collaboration with the founder, technical developers, design partners, and artists. Accurate forms are used in the collection's cautious construction. From the watch's casing to its clasp, crown, and tiniest component. Details matter a lot.
The technical, dimensional, and aesthetic qualities of every component of the Original Watches are rigorously scrutinised before admission. The final Swiss product must pass hundreds of manual controls, including tests for the cases' water resistance under pressure, levelness of the hands, form, colour, and dimensions. Of course, if you're willing to spend a little more, there are even more exceptional options available to you. Like the Rado Coupole Classic Automatic, which offers a minimalist aesthetic and a straightforward functionality that will pair nicely with anything from a business casual ensemble to jeans and a T-shirt.
