Tribute 796.
Tribute to Actor Rajesh Khanna 796
Today, I am compelled to feature another fascinating personality from the Bollywood film industry, none other than the late Rajesh Khanna, in my blogs. Four decades ago, his dominance in Bollywood was not an exaggeration. He held the title of the first superstar and the highest-paid actor for nearly a decade. Known for his versatile acting and stylish looks, he left a significant impact on cine fans. His films were infused with enchanting songs, music, compelling stories, and, above all, wonderful cinematography.
The collaboration between the late director Shakti Samanta, music stalwart S.D. Burman, and Rajesh Khanna's performances created magic in the industry that no one can deny. Working with top-class actors and directors like the late Manmohan Desai and Raj Khosla added to his illustrious career. Shakti Samanta played a crucial role in giving Rajesh Khanna a breakthrough and establishing his stardom.
Among the many memorable films to his credit, I've personally enjoyed classics such as Bawarchi, Anand, Aradhana, Kati Patang, Andaz, Sachaa Jhutha, Dushman, Amar Prem, Apna Desh, and others that slip my mind at the moment. Even though he has left us, his memorable songs and films remain a testament to his talent. Rajesh Khanna received numerous accolades, including a feature in the popular Outlook magazine, recognizing him as one of the outstanding stars of his time.
Remembered as one of the finest and most charming actors by millions of fans, I am pleased to pay tribute to this stalwart.
K. Ragavan. 11-12-23 Until we meet again next week.

A TALE OF 2 GENIUSES: RAJESH & RAHUL
Didya know that Rajesh Khanna, aside of being the magical actor, was also a proficient musician!? Yup, accounts from his school & college friends infact reveal he was a quite a drums & bongo player himself! And twas this interest in music, that brought him close to R. D. Burman from the very start of his career, & whom he regarded & continued to regard till the end as as one of his best friends, in & outside of films. This blog is about how some of their off-film camaraderie accidentally resulted in some o' legendary works of cinema! It so happened that the 2 were returning home via flight, from Pahalgam in Kashmir, after shooting for Rajesh's 3rd film 'Baharon ke sapne'. Now R. D. had a peculiar habit of randomly extemporaneously blurting out some original tune at the instant or moment of inspiration anywhere. So also here, just as the flight took off from Pahalgam, Pancham took off on his own humming spree, belting out some really melodious tunes. Infact one such tune was so catchy, that Rajesh immediately took a note of it, & asked Pancham to use it for his next film! But Pancham being the habitual original hummer, took it as mere compliment from a friend, & didn't care too much to remember. Cut to just couple of yrs down the line, Rajesh Khanna already the biggest ever superstar of Hindi cinema, from his 1969 rampage of 6 straight all-time blockbusters in year, & his jodi with R. D. Burman already legendary, were working on their project 'Kati Patang' with director Shakti Samanta, in their music studios ("Tis a known fact how they'd all appreciate Khanna being around the studios during music recordings, having the fine musical taste & ability he had. Though 'tis said, from unconfirmed sources, Khanna always avoided any recording sessions where his duets would be sung ie when Lata Mangeshkar would be performing). So on one such solo recording sitting, the trio kept banging their heads for the right tune, for a situational song which demanded a waltz like meter. Just then Rajesh suddenly remembered this tune Pancham had hummed on that Pahalgam flight years back, & how it fit perfectly with this situation! Problem being, Pancham had forgotten all about it! But Rajesh didn't give up, & began trying to search his memory for that exact tune, & actually came up with it, to great applause from the directors! Know which song it resulted in?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxrEISBLhY0 Similarly, on another gallivanting vacation in Kashmir, as the duo were coming down the stairs of a Shiva temple, the temple bell sounds invoked another spontaneous Pancham humming spree. One such tune again caught Rajesh's amazement, who catching hold of Pancham, asked him to pls remember his tune this time, & use it well! The 2 had a hearty laugh, to which Pancham assured him he wouldn't just use the tune, but gift the melody as tribute to his friend, in his very next film! Know which song we're talking about!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpy0UzbHNr0 Jai Jai!

"Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya Jaate jaate mithha Mithha gham de gaya Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya"
Remembering Qamar Jalalabadi today on his 21st death anniversary (09/01/2003).
He was an amazing poet and lyricist for Hindi movie songs. Born Om Prakash Bhandari in 1917 in Jalalabad, near Amritsar, he started writing Urdu poetry at just seven years old. Even without support at home, he found encouragement from a traveling poet, Amar, who gave him the pen name Qamar, meaning 'moon', and added 'Jalalabadi' from his hometown.
After finishing school in Amritsar, he wrote for Lahore newspapers like Daily Milap and Daily Pratap. Moving to Pune in the 1940s, he started his film career. His first big hit was in the 1942 movie Zamindar. The song "Duniya me garibonko aaraam nahi milta" became a big hit.
He then went to Bombay, writing songs for almost 40 years. Famous singers like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar sang his songs, and he worked with composers like S.D. Burman. Some of his hits include "sunti nahi duniya kabhi fariyaad kissi ki" and "Dil kis liye rota hai".
Some of his memorable songs from his early include "sunti nahi duniya kabhi fariyaad kissi ki" (Renuka, 1947) and the ghazal "Dil kis liye rota hai...pyar ki duniya me, aisa hi hota hai" (sung by Naseem Banu for the film Mulaquat in 1947). The noted dancer Sitara Devi performed some of his songs in Chand (1944). Chand was one of the earliest of Qamarji's successful and memorable films.
As a lyricist, Qamar Jalalabadi was very versatile. On one hand he wrote mesmeric duets like "sun meri saanwari mujhko kahin tum bhool na jana…" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi (film: Aansoo 1953) and on the other hand he penned comic relief songs like “khush hai zamana aaj pehli tarikh hai” endured with full throttle gusto by Kishore Kumar (film: Pehli Tarikh-1954). This song turned into veritable anthem and was played on Radio Ceylon on the first of every month for decades, and it probably still is.
The film Howrah Bridge (1954) skyrocketed his career as lyricist to unpredescented heights. Songs like "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" (Geeta Dutt) and "aaiye meherbaan, baithiye janejaan…." (Asha Bhonsle) became highly popular. In his long career span he worked for several Film Companies like; Prabhat Film Company, Pancholi Pictures, Filmistan Ltd., Famous Pictures, Minerva Movietone, Prakash Pictures, Wadia Films Ltd., Filmkar Ltd., Sippy Films, N.C Sippy Films, Shri Shakti Films, Mitra Productions and many more.
He worked with many film companies and was a founder member of the Film Writers Association & IPRS in Mumbai. He also read poetry at mushairas across India. A true legend, his work still inspires many.

Interesting e-mail discussion by Jay Subramanyam on SJ Yahoo group
Dear Shri Murthy Sir,
I wanted to respond to this mail of yours earlier but couldn't as I wanted to send in my response in detail. You have made a very interesting and a wonderfully balanced study of the last but the most controversial phase of S-J as a duo on which, theorists and music aficionados have submitted a whole roster of views and opinions. Yours of course, was (as always is) a most pragmatic view but there are so many who, with less reason and more out of convenience, have stated over the years that S-J's stocks had begun to plummet even before Jai expired so tragically in '71.
And I must say hats off to you for having highlighted Dada Burman's amazing resurgence during this very period â€" '69 -'71 when he gave some of most exquisite scores ever heard in Hindi cinema. While we talk about the trio of duos â€" SJ, KA and LP and their monopoly, Dada who rarely believed in hype or signing films by the dozen, quietly and unobtrusively came up with a slew of scores which were nothing short of remarkable â€" `Aradhana', `Prem Pujari', `Talash', `Gambler', Ishq Par Zor Naheen', `Sharmilee' and to an extent, `Jyoti'. Undoubtedly, for quality, Dada was the musical torch-bearer and not the trio of duos, during this period. As they say, once a genius, always a genius.
As for Jai hitting the bottle, I on a personal level would exercise circumspection on the issue as no such evidence has been unearthed that it had to do with his professional upheavals. Surely the vivisections that marked Jai's personal life in the later years did have their own repercussions but according those who were close to him, including Hasrat, it was primarily a force of habit, which led to Jai's chronic alcoholism and eventually took on alarming proportions.
I agree with you totally with regard to almost 2/3rds of your post. If you would allow me Sir, I have a slightly different take on the point that you have raised towards the end â€" that the big banners, who were queing to sign S-J earlier, were now deserting them, one by one. If you look at it closely, among the established producer/directors, J. Om Prakash, Subodh Mukherjee & L.V. Prasad (although his assistant and later an independent director, T. Prakash Rao stood by S-J) were perhaps, the only ones who shifted loyalties wholesale. Besides these, there was Mohan Kumar, who had also worked with Madan ji [`Anpadh', `Aap Ki Parchaiyan'] initially so he cannot be called an S-J regular as such, just as there were others like Ramanand Sagar and Kishore Sahu who did work with S-J in a couple of films but then they worked with the likes of Anil da, Salil da, Chitragupta as well, so here again, it wasn't exactly a case of their deserting the duo as such.
Besides let us remember that for a handful of those who left S-J, there were several big time producers/directors who were rock steady in their partnership with them right till the end â€" Raj ji himself, F.C. Mehra, Lekh Tandon, Bhappi Sonie, Aatmaram, K. Shanker, T. Prakash Rao and Ajit Chakraborty. These were as big names in the film fraternity as anybody else during that period. And for good measure, there were those who after a brief sabbatical, returned to the S-J fold during this very '69-'71 phase [something which had been pointed out so very rightly by Abhay ji] â€" Kishore Sahu [with `Sindoor' which was later shelved], Raja Nawathe [with `Bhai Bhai'], Ramanna [with `Aankh Michaoli'], Shridhar [with `Dharti' and Duniya Kya Jaane'] and to top them all, even J. Om Prakash, who was the first of the major filmmakers to have drifted away, came back to S-J [with `Aankhon Aankhon Mein']. Even the prestigious AVM banner came back to S-J after almost a  decade with `Main Sundar Hoon', which was their biggest hit in years. In addition, we had G.P. Sippy and Shakti Samanta, both among the front-runners, who were working with S-J right till the end with `Andaz' and `Jaane Anjaane', respectively. Plus, there were those fringe filmmakers who were fast coming up like Deven Verma [starting with `Yakeen'], Shyam Behl [starting with `Duniya'], Sohanlal Kanwar [starting with `Pehchaan'], Rajendra Bhatia [starting with `Kanyadaan'], M.C. Ramamurthy [starting with `Sachchai'] and Satish Wagle [starting with `Pyar Hi Pyar'] who had just about started their partnerships with S-J (each of them repeated S-J in their subsequent films) and would surely have continued with them had Jai not expired so suddenly. Then there were new filmmakers whose loyalties were never towards S-J, who were now filtering in â€" like Ravindra Dave and Kewal Kashyap, both K-A loyalists at one stage, who started working with the duo with
`Nagina' [that was shelved] and `Chori Chori', respectively; Tejnath Zar, who used to work with the low-key Bipin Babul, now took S-J for `Vachan' [launched in 1970] and subsequently for `Garam Khoon'; Hari Walia who did some films with Roshan, shifted towards S-J with `Latt Saheb' and `Door Naheen Manzil'. Finally, there were some like Pachchi and P.N. Arora, who may not have been staunch S-J loyalists but were with them for a major part.
Thus, as we can see there was neither a dearth of prominent banners or quality work for S-J at any stage right until 1971 and a majority of their regular producers/directors never really left them. Though on occasion, everybody is entitled to look around a bit. As said earlier, S-J even by that '70-'71 stage, had cultivated a whole new set of prominent/upcoming filmmakers, besides still having their loyal supporters, so at no stage, did they ever go out of reckoning/lose their standing in the market. Yes, as you have rightly said, their quality of works now compared a bit infavouably with their past but at that stage as school-goers, we just enjoyed what we heard. It is with age & experience that you learn to look back and do a critical analysis.
As for S-J losing their numero-uno status, I think this business of identifying Nos 1, 2 and 3 was as much a tight-rope walk then as it is today in the case of the three ruling Khans of Bollywood â€" Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir. One hit and the press is tom-toming about one of the three as the current No.1. I wonder who has framed rules to the effect that if one goes up, the other has to mandatorily come down. Can't people just co-exist in the popularity sweepstakes? I wouldn't for a moment think that S-J were anywhere other than the top even as late as September, 1971.
  Regards,
  Jay

Aye dil deewane
Khel hai kya jane
Dard bhara ye

Bhool gaya kya
Bhool ke bhi hai
Mujhko yaad zara sa

Ab sochoon tumhe
Yaad nehi hai
Ab sonchoo nahi bhule…..
