I loved the symbolism of masks in Badhaai Do.
First, when Shardul is on duty watching a symbolic gay wedding procession, he calls over a dancing, masked man and asks him if he wears a mask because he’s ashamed to show his face. The man pulls off the mask, clearly not ashamed at all. Shardul was initially interpreting the mask in a way that a lot of people do, as a way to hide your identity and/or become somebody else, play a character, etc.
But at the end of the movie the message of the mask changes for Shardul. When he puts one on during the parade, the mask becomes a symbol of him openly accepting and showing who he is instead of hiding it.

Nandita
Tumblr media
Drawn by me
Graphite pencil on paper
I drew Priyanka Chopra as Nandita from the Hindi film, Gunday (2014). I really enjoyed the film, but I still believe Nandita deserved more character development especially in the first half. I got the impression that Bikram and Bala fell in love with her just because she's hot, which made the whole friendship crisis look less serious or tragic. Anyway, I loved how Priyanka Chopra expressed Nandita's mixed feelings and strength within her in this scene.

Jubilee
Tumblr media
First thing first, Jubilee shows you the realism of the Bombay talkies era with an interval by building huge and royal studios, cinema reels, crew chairs, hand painted posters, an ambitious producer with business acumen, smoking pipe, outfits, and so much more. The series in itself is quite symbolic for the purpose of depicting the golden era. Yes, I call it a golden era. I read the show is pretty much inspired by the life of Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. Let’s kickstart.
Praise worthy angles from the entire series that are responsible for the story:
Blazing journeys of 5 characters Roy, Binod, Jay, Niloufer, Walia
The unparalleled fate of 2 studios Khanna studio and Roy studio
The transformations, transitions, and evolving cinema with a blend of crime, love, conspiracy and fame.
Beginning, Rise and Fall
It is commendable to see how the makers combined the most essential attributes of the black and white cinema - Dialogues, Music, Drama and great frames.
The 3 compelling dialogues that summarize Cinema which are crafted beautifully in the film with the scene,
'Power is within this weapon of cinema.'
'Cinema can raise a level by giving the audience a taste of poetry, photography, music and aspirations.'
'Cinema can empower people.'
Let us put the stars on the shoulders of the team. Vikramaditya Motawane, Atul Sabharwal and Soumik Sen are the names. I should say, a gorgeous job on the series by all the teams.
Supposedly it has to be one of the most expensive projects as it costs a fortune to build a city entirely. Especially a city which used to look a certain way but not any more. It is bound to attract criticism, comparisons and judgements. Hence applause for the art department.
Moving to the title, Jubilee. Good one. The word Jubilee was significant in the non-bollywood era. It marked a big success of the film if it reaches Jubilee unlike the crore club where films are less than 2 stars but box office is 200 cr.
Vikramaditya Motawane has created a web series that is uncommon among current subjects. Lots of makers tried to recreate the golden era but most of them went unnoticed. I am fond of Khoya Khoya Chand for the infamous vintage era. However, reaching everybody through OTT through Jubilee with a 10 episode series of 50 minutes is a master thought. That breathing space to judge the success with an olden times ‘interval’ but of a week is outstanding. However, such a big risk.
Mentioning positives of the show to move with. It has a decent Star cast that is not very glittering and glam. Subtle and real. When you cut on the star factor you can actually see through the show and its potential. So I liked the cast to portray that era. Apararshakti Khurana as one of the leads is huge. Names to mention: Wamiqa Gabbi and Prosenjit Chatterjee. I am all praises for Wamiqa Gabbi. Simply Wow. She is a complete package of dance, acting, nakharas, ada and reality. An actress who very clearly takes you to the era of queens like Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, Nutan and the list goes on. She does not imitate anybody. Prosenjit Chatterjee, an innovative and ahead of his time producer who wants to make a mark but probably wishes to stick to what sells on screen with a traditional cinema perspective. The curiosity that both Roy and Niloufer go on building in their own way is really good. Sidhant Gupta’s energy matches the character’s but his acting felt an over-do at times. But when he walks as a star is one act you can’t miss but notice. It shows a mix of stardom and simplicity. Great work there. He is the Guru Dutt effect as a one man show with actor-director qualities. Aditi Rao Hydari is just being herself, a beauty. Ram Kapoor, Shweta Basu are names known for good acting just like that. All the supporting actors have done a celebrated job in their roles. Amazing to watch Arun Govil in a web series. The casting decisions are appreciable. The character Govil plays as a calm father is peaceful for the eyes and ears.
Music is magnificent. Thanks to Amit Trivedi for giving one more album that can be put on loop. The compositions of jubilee prove that even today a melody is possible with sensible ‘Hindi’ lyrics which are louder than the music and each word, chord and instrument is heard and worth a praise. Kudos to Amit Trivedi and Kausar Munir for creating songs that calm people like us can humm. My personal favourites are Voh Tere Mere Ishq, Dariyacha Raja, Na Koi Mera and Saare Ke Saare Akele. Rest you would not like to skip as well. It has the sound of the period it belongs to. The lyrics bear to our usual spoken Hindi language - simple and understood. I can’t put this more straight. Those days were about melody and dialogues that hit the audience.
Dialogues as expected are filled with drama and conviction.
Favourite frame from the series is Jay and Nilo sitting on the road drenched in the rain in front of a theatre under the poster of Baiju Awara. Splendid! You do not have to show intimacy by stripping down and making love. Sometimes it's just the way you sketch love on screen. Quite a romantic frame. Other Mesmerizing frames:
Binod first in front of the fire that also marks the end frame of Roy in front of fire.
Sumitra sitting in front of the mirror in the train.
Roy, sitting in his private screening theatre, calls the man to project the reel.
Jay Khanna in his own studio on the first day against the Taxi cut out.
The last shot of Roy studio with lights dimming symbolizing the fall.
Jay Khanna’s cabin with Taxi Driver Poster of Jay and Nilo.
And the favourite of many, the RK inspired Jay and Niloufer umbrella scene.
I am glad to see one series with no skin show, no kissing at every alternate shot and most importantly close to no violence. Every other show today is either lust or violence with litres of blood flowing. This series is like detox.
Some curiosity creeps in. Was Phone tapping really a thing? Would the show not be as captivating as it was if tapping was not a part of the show? Mysterious.
Coming to an end resembles a Guru Dutt film with a song like Dekhi Zamane ki Yaari. Saare ke Saare Akele went on flipping pages and how heartbreaking every page was!
Looking at Jubilee overall,
What’s remarkable is the tragic ending given to all the characters like most of the yesteryear actors saw. It is not a fictitious act of drama. We have heard stories where either people disappeared from the industry or their demise was not a very pleasant one or some love stories were not as happy as their film’s or their stardom just vanished with a flop. I admire the way fiction was weaved with the inside stories from the film industry. But across 10 episodes we saw a lot of screen time invested in long pauses. Not sure why the typical fame was not shown like ordinary fans gathering around Madan or crowds at the red carpets of premieres. No premieres at all actually. But the pre-independence period, partition and its effect on the cinema industry was precisely connected. The makers very smartly keep awards at bay as filmfare started in 1954 and this story wraps up by 1953. Also, the details that were very well shown were salaried crew, technicians and even actors associated with the studio, the refugee camps, international interventions and the editing on negatives of the reel. What is incredible to see is the grey shade every character gets with situations. It's meticulous writing.
All the characters had a closure but I wonder what happened to Shamsher Walia.
I was waiting for the last ‘The End’ or ‘समाप्त’ after we saw Interval post the 1st batch of 5 episodes. But that did not come. Another season in making? Giving benefit of doubt as the glorious era of cinema has just started in Jubilee. But I must say first is the only first. What follows is to piggyback on the popularity of last success. It loses its charm. I hope the makers continue the legacy if they plan seasons.
To end this I would say Jubilee gives you the pictorial version of the tales and accounts narrated by the legends and insiders. I will not deny that the series seems stretched or sluggish at times but I think establishing the actors and an entire past generation will take its own time.
Jubilee is a must watch for people who believe in the essence of cinema and Hindi film industry of yesterday. It is for obsessed film lovers who have not yet fallen prey to Bollywood’s faux stardom.

Qala and consent!
When I listened to the song everyone on Instagram is obsessed with, and have used to create over a million reels, I had a moment of clarity about its lyrics! I heard Ghodey Pe Sawaar, from Qala on a loop, and I realized its brilliance.
“Dheere dheere
Jatan karne se, dulhaniya ke khulte
Hriday ke dvar hai
Jaane balma ghode pe kyu sawaar hain?”
[Slowly slowly
Express our affection, Bride’s heart would
Open its doors
Wonder why dearest is mounted on the saddle of urgency?]

You know, the more I think about Kajol's "Tribhanga", the more I think
This old lady ain't s*** as a mother
Let me explain. Again, spoilers ahead if you haven't seen the movie and want to.
Tribhanga stars Kajol as the daughter of a famous writer who she just finds out is now in a coma. However, she hates her guts and the movie goes through a series of flashbacks telling us why. And even though it sorta justifies the woman's actions at the end, I can't help making a list of reasons why this lady's trash as a mom
The first thing we find out is this lady is obsessed with her writing, to the point where her mother-in-law took care of the house and kids more than she did. And before you say it, no, she is not justified for neglecting her house and family because she's a career oriented woman. The woman pushed her husband away at every chance of romance, didn't want to do anything in the house but write, and she even wanted to move out of the house because her mother-in-law complained that she's always writing and wouldn't even notice if her kids were dying. Like I get that's taking it extreme, but seeing how little she did in the flashbacks we've seen, the audience is kinda forced to think it's warranted. And when her husband said "The kids are happy here, we can't just up and leave", this lady looks him dead in the eye and says "What about MY happiness?" and proceeded to take the kids.
Yes, you read right, SHE took the kids. The same lady that had zero time for them when Dad and grandma were taking care of them just up and became a single parent. At first I was more forgiving because later when little Kajol called the dad and wanted to move back with him, he tried reasoning with her saying he'd be too busy working and grandma would be too old to take care of them. This sounded like the two of them at least talked a little and said "Oh yeah, it's best if they live with you" but you can tell by his reaction to her walking out with the kids that this was a spur of the moment thing and he had little say in it.
And let's not forget that she would spend the rest of the kids' lives letting them have the impression that dad is trash because he never came to get them when in reality he literally never stopped thinking of them to the point where this man was old with Alzheimer's and still had them on his mind 24/7. And did you notice that there's zero evidence that this man was a bad father? This lady alienated her kids from him because SHE was offended.
Oh and it gets worse. Remember how I said she would push this man away at every romantic opportunity? Yeah, the woman would justify it by saying she never had passion with him so she found it with her new boyfriend. Yeah sure, just brush the man off every time he makes an effort and blame HIM for the lack of passion in your life. But wait, we're not talking about bad spousing, we're talking bad parenting
Anyway, mother of the year here brought in a new boyfriend with little to no regard for her kids' safety and he ends up molesting little Kajol right under this woman's nose. Yup, her kid closed off from her when this dude showed up and she didn't even know her kid got molested in her house until years later when Kajol made a book about it. Seriously, tell me why Natural Guardianship, the concept that moms should automatically get sole custody of the kids, is still a thing when s*** like THIS happens?!?
And don't go saying it wasn't her fault. SHE took the kids when SHE wasn't happy, SHE brought this guy into the house, and SHE spent so little time talking to her kid that didn't feel safe going to her with this even though SHE should've been one of the first to know! If this isn't neglect, it sure as hell is endangering the welfare of her child
And it's not like it ended when Kajol hit adulthood. Tell me why this lady heard noises coming from her pregnant daughter's apartment and the first thing she does is check on the boyfriend? And lo and behold, Kajol was getting abused by this man and barely managed to get him out of there. When she threw the old lady out too, I wanted to get up and start clapping because she had that coming.
That ending high-key felt forced because even though this lady said she regrets everything, it doesn't justify anything she did. In fact, I can't even take the regret seriously after this narcissist said "I wish my kids were one of my characters, then I could write them as I wished."
The movie was alright to watch but this character makes Rose "I let my sisters try to kill everyone" Quartz look like a good mom. Not all moms are good ones, and this movie shows what happens when you let them get away with the s*** they do.
As a mom, this lady was not s***

Brilliant Con Artists in Indian Movies
Dolly Ki Doli (2015)
Tumblr media
We all only hear of girls being money diggers by sceptical mothers and mothers-in-law, but the main character in this film made it her profession and got a kick out of it. Starring Sonam Kapoor as Dolly, the girl running marriage scams in the towns of North India, it entails her getting married to potentially well-off boys and then running away with valuables on the first night of their marriage. From wealthy landlord families to simple-minded business owners, she loots them all and disappears with her fake family. When a police officer catches up to her antics after a few prominent families, he plans to set a trap for her to fall into.
A fresh idea for the serious commitment that marriage is believed to be in India, this film was entertaining to the end of how she played her part well. While Sonam Kapoor is not well received through her work, this film was exemplary with a few other films. The idea was novel to me when it was released, I nevertheless believe it is easy to get away with a similar scam, as marriage is a sensitive and elaborate process between families with not many serious qualifications needed. While it is a light-hearted film about a charming con girl, marriage scams are authentic leaving its victims with serious consequences.
Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl (2011)
Tumblr media
One of my first films on con artists, this film too glorifies the illegal profession. With Ranveer Singh as the lead, we first see him scamming a girl to fall in love with him while convincing her father to buy his property from a fake owner. We then see him run a painting scam with a businesswoman, only for her to get conned by him. In her rage at being fired, the businesswoman teams up with other women conned by the same man and plans revenge to get back their money.
Having presented the same topic in college, I stand by my statement, that India is one of the top ten on a list of countries with the most frauds and scams. This movie was charming, convincing us of how good-looking he was that we almost forgave him for his crimes. But in reality, this film, however unintentional, glorified the actions of a con artist. It was one of my favourite films to rewatch, and it still is, not just for the story but for the empowered victims and gave them a course of action. While the tactics are hard to replicate in reality, the film is still entertaining.
Players (2012)
Tumblr media
Another classic in this list, this film has a brilliant execution of their elaborate plan of subjective justice for their lives. Initially planning to steal gold with a unique team of individuals, the film spins out of trajectory when their plan goes unfinished. The film then picks off from a different perspective, and with every turn in the movie we zoom out to see that there was a bigger picture than the one we saw before and believed. The film was mindblowing with the nuances added to the plot that made it gripping every single time, and with stereotypes that were not all that unique but still had humane characters.
Having a specific aesthetic through the direction and actors that were skilled and very specific to the character roles, this film is entertaining and compelling until the very end. Being over a decade old, it might initially seem cliche for today’s standard and yet it has a timeless value repetitively ingrained throughout. The film focuses heavily on loyalty and doing right by what is morally expected of someone, even though it is a conflicting topic in this genre of the film. ‘Players’ was thrilling with a sense of humour while keeping us on the edge of our seats on what could unravel next.
Vaastu Prakara (2014)
Tumblr media
One of the first films by Rakshith Shetty, this film is a bag of laughs and drama. While conning is not the leading theme here, it is ruled by romance and them deceiving one family for their own reasons. Two men come together for a profession deeply dependent on faith and indigenous science, though their beliefs are inconsistent for the same. With a job that brings romance to one and work to do for both, they both go on a trial of their skills.
With seasoned actors like Ananth Nag and Sudha Rani, this film is an amusing punch. It is easily a family watch despite the romance and the humour. It also highlights the generational gap most people experience with their parents and children. With a controversial director, this film had its fans and critics having unique opinions, but I’d like to point out they only presented a perspective, not the reality.
Roy (2015)
Tumblr media
Creating enormous buzz when it came out, this film was a paradox to the audience until someone dissected the storyline to make it sensible. With enchanting directions and captivating actors playing enigmatic characters, the storyline makes sense but somehow leaves a vital dot that needs to be connected that suddenly makes sense in the very end. It starts with a story of an art thief falling in love and changing his direction with another parallel of a filmmaker who meets a captivating woman and connects with her. The rest of the film takes us on a journey that none of us can predict.
With its enchanting music, dreamy visuals and ensnaring plotline, this film is one for an evening that requires contemplation on the experience it was. While the story is not original or unique, the narration and direction of the story makes it distinctive. Somewhat appearing to break the fourth wall of the cinema, this film gives a perspective peek into the lives of the storytellers we regularly consume from.
Special 26 (2013)
Tumblr media
Based on a real story, this film entails the time of individuals fraudulently posing as government officers and raiding corrupt politicians and local businessmen. Getting away with it was the easy part, with them being quickly followed and chased by the legal government officials, fleeing them in minutes and having a solid system. It was based on the heist in 1987, where they even interviewed the people for the heist, making it seem like they were actual officers, involving real police authorities for support during the raids.
This film was an enormous success in the theatres and the television when it was released, well-known for the story and the work of prominent actors. While the film seems like an adaptation of a Robin Hood figure, taking black money from corrupt individuals, the money does not flow out to the people as the original story goes. The brilliant execution of the raids, the plot twists and the stunning performance by the actors are unmatched. With a very Indian touch to the film theme and the art of conning being perceptible from the beginning, this film is exceptional.
Drive (2019)
Tumblr media
With distinctively bad ratings, this film is a good watch for the first time. Starring Sushanth Singh Rajput and a few other stars from Bollywood, it was refilmed several times to fit into the genre of OTT Platforms. The film starts with a buzz, a corrupt politician hiding her money in the Rastrapathi Bhavan only to hear rumours that it could be stolen by the “King”. With steep conflicts and two officers dispatched to dissolve this situation, the film pans to a group of individuals dabbling in illegal car racing who encounter another mysterious character who offers help with everything and nothing.
With innumerable plot twists and characters revealing their identities layer by layer, this film is mind-boggling and undeniably fictional. The film is like a meld of Dhoom and the Race series, with cliche themes of adrenaline pump and complex characters coming together for the impossible. While the mix is not invalid, somehow the film does not pack the punch either series did. The chase is thrilling, and this film is absolutely recommended to people who love the adrenaline rush. The car races are the icing of the film.
Operation Alamelamma (2017)
Tumblr media
A truly underrated gem from the Kannada film industry, this film was hilarious with an excellent plan that was successfully executed. The film starts with a simple man who casually picks up a luggage bag on the street only to get hauled into a kidnapping case making him the prime suspect. Claiming to have picked the bag out of curiosity, the man ends up on a road trip with the police officials scrambling to find the son of a businessman. The story has flashbacks and unique characters, everything coming together in the end with an unimaginable tale.
I was enamoured by this film, not having seen anything like this in any other films of any language. The characters not being con artists in reality, the film is ingenious and out of the ordinary. With nearly all the actors being underrated, the reception was limited amongst the audiences with barely any fame, making it a hidden jewel. The language and setting are local to South Indians and could be a fresh perspective to the prospective global audience. Having very down-to-earth characters and a story that leaves us speechless, this film is like no other.
Race series (2008, 2013,2018)
Tumblr media
The first Race film was groundbreaking setting standards high in the con artists and heist experts genre of films, with the second film surpassing the first film with the buzz created. With nearly terrible ratings for the third film, I promptly ignored its existence while rewatching the first two. The film mafia groups, complex familiaes with hidden crimes and agendas, and a plottwist to leave us all in shock. The first film came with a lot of twists and turns, mostly involving family drama between two ambitious brothers. The second film features one of the said brothers and he many heists he gets involved in with a very well-known business tychoon to make money.
Being very young when I first watched both the films, the adrenaline rush and the exciting plot left me entalled in its brilliance. Having rewatched it recently, I can certainly find plenty of faults in the films, but nonetheless, it is fast paced and takes us on a race to the end with the exhilaring story. The films are creative thats for sure, but the characters never seem to evolve which is both good and bad for the story. Race was always a classic in this genre of films, with con artists living the best life while also having incredible music, and each of their entrances with alluring romances.
Dhoom series (2004, 2006, 2013)
Tumblr media
If anything could beat the Race series in its brilliance, its these three films. While the Race series highlighted the cons and the heists from the perspective of the con artists, these three films takes a wider shot including the storyline of the infamous two cops in the three films while also letting us in on the con artists lives behind the crimes. The thieves here are called just the ame and pan out from just India to South and North America with the crimes being greater than the one featured before.
The first film involves heists that are local but frustrating enough to the police officials who are unable to catch them on their own, having to bring in special officers to deduce the mind of this unique crime group. The second film however brings in an artistic persective to the tale with the con artist not just being excellant at his job, but also being a master of disguises. The last film involves Aamir Khan taking the stage as a circus entertainer, brought by his father in the same profession sworn to revenge for a bitter past and brilliant plans for the American Banks.
The plots were incredible, unique to each con artist and with endings that are unpredictable every time. The films have stayed imprinted on my mind from a young age, and while it glorifies the crime it also show us the incredible amount of commitment and hardwork that actualy goes behind it. With visuals that blow our minds and avant-garde technology, the films are sure to blow our minds and leave us reeling for more.
