Rise of the Guardians and The Little Engine That Could are the same movie (sort of)

Today I made my friends scream. Not like... painfully... but they were disturbed. 

Basically, I told them that The Little Engine That Could (the movie from 2011 specifically) is just Rise of the Guardians with a Thomas & Friends aesthetic.

I probably already lost you there, so let me explain:

So you start with a simple premise - there are entities that the average person cannot see, many of which devote their lives to children. In ROTG this would refer to the Guardians themselves, and in TLETC this is referring to the trains who travel through the tunnels to bring toys to the human world.

Our main characters? A blue protagonist (with puppy eyes for some reason) who is not a full fledged member of whatever group that serves children in their universe. For Jack, he’s been alone for 300 years and only knows of the Guardians, but for Little Engine she has always been “too small” to be a dream hauler and has to stay in Dreamland.

[spoilers beyond this point (but really, they came out years ago so I don't know who's going to be spoiled.) Better to be safe]

But suddenly! Something happens; balance is tipped and the group can’t perform their jobs for the children because of various mishaps (tunnels collapsing in TLETC - Pitch ruining centers in ROTG).

Now the protagonist must help/get help from some random, dorky brunette boy in a vest. And for some reason he slips on ice and is in the snow a lot.

Then magic happens. That stuff is actually unique to each movie, though I guess Little Engine did have a whole scene where she’s all “I’m gonna fly,” and Jack can actually fly.

Then, at some point or another, the blue magical protagonist doubts their own ability to help, and a nightmare character (The Nightmare Train in TLETC and Pitch in ROTG) comes and tries to reason with them. In Little E.’s case she does actually trust him, but Jack doesn’t trust Pitch. That detail doesn’t really matter because they both beat the nightmare character in the end and get back to their respective brunette kids in vests.

And finally, in the end they become part of that group that brings joy to children and prove themselves trustworthy, all while the brunette boy has to face his fear and yell “I’m not afraid of you!” or something similar while his friend(s) watch him defeat the antagonist(s).

And that’s just plot-wise. For characters we also have a bunch of connections. Here’s what I can say:

Little Engine = Jack - blue magic protagonist who wants to prove themself and be accepted.

Nightmare Train = Pitch - must I explain this one?

Richard = Jamie - young brunette kid who gets bullied sometimes, wears vests, likes dorky stuff like trains and robots, is a “believer” who is friends with the blue protagonist, and is always out in the snow for some reason. Bonus: Throws things at the bad guy (Pitch or the bullies).

Jillian = Tooth - one of the sole female characters who is actually really cool and nice.

Ace = Sandy - one of the only braincells who gets stuff done. Flies and is mute, and ultimately helps the blue magic protagonist in defeating the nightmare character. They also make the same angry face...

Bev = North - kinda the unofficial leader who organizes everything and who you really just want to hug because they’re so cheery??

Hudson = Bunny - an angry, animal-looking pile of angst who has a “for me?” moment at some point and learns the value of friendship or something (I think,,, I haven’t seen TLETC in a while). Also... “ANNOYING??” / “RABBIT??” in British and Australian accents respectively.

Major = Baby Tooth - idk it kinda works? Maybe not, but I can see some similarities with the loyalty and sacrifice and stuff.

Marcus = Literally any of Jamie’s friends would work

Tower = definitely Phil - I mean seriously... do I have to explain? Tower runs the rails in Dreamland and Phil runs the Workshop at the Pole. They’re also both always annoyed.

And for the life of me I don’t know who Bud and Lou would be, but they give me elf vibes.

(Don’t ask me who the other trains would be. I have some ideas but they feel like stretches.)

Honorable mentions:

And there you have it! ROTG and TLETC are the same movie with different aesthetics. Thanks for sticking with me through this train wreck. Oh I’m so funny. Now go get yourself some blue clothes, a brunette child in a vest, and some recklessness! You’ll get to the spirits realm some day!

Have you seen the Little Engine that could movie (and I’m talking the original cartoon one with megatron and Optimus primes voice actors, not the newer cgi abomination)? Man that was a weird movie!

I actually remember enjoying a real banger of an animated movie. There was at least one talking train, big and orange? but there were a shitload of such vehicles. The songs slapped, by kindergarten standards. Same era. Damn, can't remember a word, but I miss it.
