BNHA “Rewatch”: Episode 58 “Special Episode! Save the World with Love!”
mysterylover123
So I’m breaking the established formula a bit here. First, I’m watching this ep out of order, since it’s supposed to be an intro for the movie and take place between Season 2 and 3. Second - I actually haven’t seen this episode before, hence the ‘rewatch’ in quotes. I have no idea what happens in it other than a vague plot outline, so here you go: My unspoiled reactions to Episode 58!
Why do I picture All Might and Deku’s Voice Actors saying these lines at producer gunpoint?
Make my Story! While it’s not my favorite OP, the above image might be my favorite shot from any of the 5.
“All Might, You’re on the Exposition Network! Let’s watch this stuff you already know!” Also why does Midnight take a catty dig at All Might’s age? That’s so mean!
David Shield can effing get it. I’ll elaborate more in the movie but dayum.
Oh so that’s what’s going on. “Summer classes for those who want em”. So let’s see who’s acting OOC in order to appear in the ep, shall we?
OK this ain’t so bad. Basically the Dekusquad + Bakugo.
LOL that look when he hears the words ‘capture villain’
All Might’s fanboy trio aka the OT3!
Why is Uraraka hitting on All Might all of a sudden? Holy crap she really is trying to be just like Deku!
The Dekusquad + Bakugou have to figure out what’s going on. OK. We’ll see where this goes.
Holy Crap Bakugo not freaking out about Deku taking the lead, now you know it’s filler. Also, Kacchaco shippers must love that calm and easygoing interaction there.
Cutie!
All Might plays a weirdly good bad guy. Also that’s his villain costume from the OVA!
Hoo boy. Filler Bakugo is blowing up over being forced to wait around. Uh, Filler Kacchan, it was your idea to have Uraraka scope out the situation first! Matter of fact, why wasn’t that just Deku’s idea? Way more in character, and then Katsuki’s outburst would be more in-character for him too.
They go blasting and discover...duh duh duh...All Might Villain edition is dead? Uh, ok...
So Bakugo is chastising Uraraka with ‘how could you miss the villain getting killed, scout?” and she’s like “your smoke got in the way”. I still feel like this exchange is a little odd...I guess I picture Uraraka being sassier if Baku ever pulled this line on her in canon.
Deku points out that they need to conduct interrogations and for some reason this doesn’t piss off Bakugo.
Inspector Todoroki is confused, as is the audience. Locked room mystery!
So we proceed with CSI: UA as we learn that nobody could’ve escaped apparently so one of the three suspects must be the killer.
Todoroki and Bakugou argue about who plays Good cop or Bad Cop for a while (obviously Kacchan is the latter). This feels like a freaking Scooby Doo episode.
Detective Deku ponders. That big hero brain is thinking. Go Deku!
His foil meanwhile is as usual screaming about Bad Cop methods.
Oh ho? A wild BKDK moment appears! “You’ve got an idea, don’t you?” Someone knows his S/O
“Elementary, my dear Watson. Allow me to explain.”
Apparently Deku has deduced the perp is Midnight. Where he’s pulling this out of I have no idea.
Caption this.
Why are they playing that super serious OST from Shoto Todoroki Origin over this doofy episode? That OST belongs with soul-shredding tragedy, not Deku’s Scooby Doo account of whodunit.
WTF AM I WATCHING WHY ARE WE HAVING THIS BIG EMOTIONAL FEST OVER A FICTIONAL SCENARIO THAT DOESN’T EVEN EXIST WHY IS TSUYU CRYING WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?!?!
I’m with you, Bakugo.
Aizawa’s saying Deku did good; I’m assuming another shoe is about to drop, but in the meantime let me fangirl over how totes adorbs Deku is.
Aizawa reveals All Might tricked em all and got away. OK whatever.
Bakugo is so annoyed by this twist he screams loud enough to shatter glass. Once again I’m with him.
Melissa sends AM an exposition email and he goes to fetch Deku for the movie.
How is this not normal for him now?
haha Deku would be so adorably annoying to live with. I love this visualization.
“C’mon young Midoriya we’re gonna miss the movie!” “Hai!”
So that’s Episode 58. It’s about as silly as I thought it’d be, and there’s really not much you’re missing if you skip this one and go straight to the movie. There were a couple of fun moments, but it honestly feels like peak filler, everything that makes filler feel a little off and strange. I feel like there could’ve been a better way to setup the movie - tie it into the PLE perhaps? - and I probably won’t rewatch this one. Still glad to have now official seen all BNHA eps tho! Tomorrow: DA MOVIE.
BKDK CORNER:
So Filler BKDK and Filler Bakugou always feel a little bit off to me, mostly because either Bakugo doesn’t react to any of his usual Deku-related triggers, or becuase he’s just mad for no explained reason. I’ll talk more about that with the movie and Episode 39, but it’s present here too. Still, I did like them writing Baku as being like “Of course Deku has some plan.” That seems like something he might say, though in a much more begrudging way.
BEST GIRL OF THE EP: Melissa Shield!
RANKER: Ranking the BNHA extra material
4. OVA 2: Training of the Dead
3. OVA 3: All Might Rising
2. The Movie: 2 Heroes
1. OVA 1: Jump Festa! Rescue Training!
(we’ll see where Movie 2 falls, it might be the best of them all).
