BABY MONEY (2021) Preview of home invasion crime thriller
BABY MONEY (2021) Preview of home invasion crime thriller
‘A mother would do anything’
Baby Money is a 2021 American crime thriller in which a home invasion turns into a bloody shootout leaving one of the thieves trapped.
Co-directed by Mikhael Bassilli and Luc Walpoth – both making their feature debut – from a screenplay co-written by Bassilli and MJ Palo. Produced by Mikhael Bassilli, Brandon Henry Rodriguez, Luc Walpoth and Nick Zuvic.
The movie…
Girl, you are boring. You’re a whole unseasoned chicken.
Starring: Laila Odom, Golden Brooks, Jennifer Freeman, Taja V. Simpson
Plot Synopsis: After Cara's friends give her a new look for a night out during the holidays, she has a romantic encounter with a man on an elevator, only to find out he's dating her overbearing boss. (x)
In My Humble Opinion: During the first ten minutes of Kiss Me for Christmas, I was like, “I have definitely seen this exact movie before.” Then I read the plot synopsis and it pinged for me. It seemed like Kiss Me for Christmas was a remake of the 2011 ION movie A Christmas Kiss. The loglines are very similar: A “boring” assistant who wears glasses becomes glamorous for a night and shares a kiss in a broken down elevator with a mysterious handsome gentleman only to find out the next day that he’s the boyfriend of her nightmare boss. Shenanigans ensue. True love. So on and so forth.
I was amused because it felt like we were coming full circle. Finally we are remaking Christmas movies we have seen before! ION pictures no less! I was ready to chalk this up as a slightly more energetic remake, give it 2.5 stars and call it a day.
Except then I checked the credits and didn’t see A Christmas Kiss credited anywhere. There was no reference to it or its original writer in the credits for Kiss Me for Christmas at any point throughout the two credit sequences. So for a moment, I was like, “Am I crazy? Is this not supposed to be a remake?”
So I did what I never thought I would do and rewatched the first twenty minutes of A Christmas Kiss and if Kiss Me for Christmas is not a sanctioned remake, than frankly I feel like there is a really good case to be made that it’s plagiarized because the opening story beats are so incredibly similar with only some slight modifications.
In both movies: the assistant is told she’s boring and her friends make her up until she’s “unrecognizable” for a night on the town. She’s initially waylaid from joining her friends because a boss sends a last minute text asking her to fix the heat in her apartment. She goes over there and gets stuck in a broken down elevator with a handsome stranger. They talk about “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. The elevator shakes again and they kiss. She runs away. The next day she goes to work, her boss is self-centered and rude and she finds out her boss’s boyfriend is the man she kissed the night before. The boss’s wealthy boyfriend doesn’t recognize her because she’s wearing glasses and is once again not glamorous.
Sure, there are some differences. In Kiss Me for Christmas, there is a mysterious doorman who seemingly grants wishes. In A Christmas Kiss, the wealthy philanthropist boyfriend still seems to be connected with his family, while in Kiss Me for Christmas the wealthy philanthropist boyfriend grew up in a series of group homes. Kiss Me for Christmas also has the love interest take his shirt off before the impromptu kiss while A Christmas Kiss has the love interest keep all of his layers on. Still. Is that enough of a difference?
There aren’t enough differences to make me feel comfortable. Maybe there’s some behind-the-scenes legal transaction I don’t know about. Maybe everything has been cleared and the original A Christmas Kiss writers don’t want to be credited, or it’s not copyrighted or something. It is 5:00 AM and now is not the time to launch a full investigation into the potential plagiarism of made-for-TV Christmas movies on channels and streaming services nobody really watches or covers.
I can still be uncomfortable with the idea of it though. I can still feel like there’s something sketchy going on here. So until I am informed otherwise, I’m going to give this movie one star. Is this how teachers feel when turnitin.com lights up red? Because I hate it. I really, really do.
Watch If: You know he’s the one when he listens to podcasts, if you speak like a pedestrian or if you won’t take pictures with anyone who looks like overtime on a Tuesday.
Skip If: You have levels of real, if your favorite past time is taking naps or if you are named Cleatus.
Final Rating: ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Fear the Walking Dead’s talented star Danay Garcia has joined the cast of an upcoming feature film that begins shooting later this month.
Danay Garcia is having a great year. From her role as Luciana on Fear the Walking Dead to the warm reception for her short film The Cure, Garcia has been doing well and now the multi-talented actress is adding to her impressive resume after being cast in an upcoming feature film.
According to her publicist, Garcia has been cast in Dead End as “Minny”, a getaway driver working to help her partner to escape a Los Angeles neighborhood in police lockdown. Not only is it incredibly dangerous work, but Minny is pregnant and her pregnancy raises the stakes even higher.
Dead End also stars Michael Drayer, Travis Hammer and Taja V. Simpson, with a script from Mikhail Bassilli and MJ Palo and directors Bassilli and Luc Walpoth. The movie is set to begin shooting in Los Angeles in mid-September.
Garcia’s short film The Cure (La cura) opened the Baja California International Film Festival in June, and most recently it was featured at the Shorts Mexico Film Festival in Mexico City in early September. The film focuses on a small Mexican village struck down by a terrifying and mysterious disease. The local priest has to reconcile matters of faith when it comes to seeking out a cure for his people, but it could come at a terrible cost. The film was written and co-directed by Garcia, and it was produced by her production company This Is Happening.
Luciana has been the heart and soul of Fear the Walking Dead since the show’s second season when Nick Clark arrived at La Colonia. Since crash landing in the middle Texas in season 5, it was Luciana who helped young Dylan see that they were trying to help. Now she’s working to keep Tank Town running under the threat of Logan and his henchmen.

With only a few episodes remaining in season 5 of Fear the Walking Dead, the stakes are higher than ever for Luciana and her friends. Tune in on Sundays at 9pm to see what happens, and watch for Danay Garcia in Dead End sometime in 2020 or 2021.
