We have some interesting bits of trivia this week for Cutie Honey episode 10: “The Castle of Illusion Smothered in Fog.”
Screenwriter: Susumu Takaku
Art Director: Eiji Ito
Animation Director: Takeshi Shirato
Director: Takeshi Shirato
Junpei’s lovey-dovey sleep talk is apparently referencing Chiyo Okumura’s 1969 song, Koi no Dorei or “Slave to Love.”
When Honey holds a mirror to Miharu’s face, she’s so frightened by her own reflection, she runs away screaming for her mother. This gag is actually lifted from the original manga. Honey doesn’t do this to Miharu but rather the hideous gang leader of St. Chapel Academy, Sukeban Naoko. We’ll talk more about Naoko for episode 22’s trivia post.
The animation director for this episode was Takeshi Shirato, who was also heavily involved with Devilman, Mazinger Z and Dororon Enma-kun. Honey’s hunchback disguise is based on the character Demon from Mazinger Z episode 29, which also featured Shirato as the animation director.
You may have noticed Cutter Claw is the one Panther Claw whose name doesn’t reflect any of her powers or abilities. Originally, her hair was supposed to act as a giant pair of scissors. The animation staff probably didn’t want to have two scissor-themed villains in the show and thus Cutter Claw became a shapeshifting illusionist instead.

So in the GO games the characters have their years by their names and other info and I find that pretty interesting?? I don’t think the games prior to the GO ones had the years on the character mini profile. I tend to forget who is in what year sometimes and the ina11 wiki doesn’t have their years listed (I think). Anyway, if you’re curious about who is in what year/grade here’s a (long) list of inazuma characters. It mostly contains GO characters but since you can recruit some characters from the original series I added them on here to.
Not every character has a year, some are labeled ??? or ADULT (Akizora Challengers/Golden Oldies team). Most of the aliea characters are under ??? and Toramaru is to (but we all know he’s younger so-). Also, these are only from Light/Shadow. I haven’t played CS yet so none of those characters are on here.

We're at the home stretch now! Let's take a look at Cutie Honey episode 21: "A Black Shadow Stands in the Green Field."
Screenwriter: Keisuke Fujikawa
Art Director: Iwamitsu Ito
Animation Director: Takeshi Shirato
Director: Yoichi Kominato
Miharu and Pochi have no problem recognizing Honey while she’s transformed as Hurricane Honey. This is very strange considering Junpei, Danbei and several Panther Claw subordinates couldn’t see through this specific disguise in earlier episodes. Pochi didn't even recognized Hurricane Honey back in episode 11 either.
Also, in this episode only, Pochi is voiced by Isamu Tanonaka who would go on to voice the Principal of Paradise Academy.
Twin Panther One is voiced by Sachiko Chijimatsu, who has had a role in every early Toei magical girl series dating all the way back to Sally the Witch in 1966. Twin Panther Two is voiced by Rihoko Yoshida, who previously voiced Honey’s best friend, Natsuko. Chijimatsu and Yoshida would go on to play “sisters” in Majokko Megu-chan.
Technically, this is the only episode where Honey does not appear as Honey Kisaragi. However, in episode 17, she inexplicably appeared with brown hair.
One of the key animators on this episode was Kazuhide Tomonaga, who would go on to handle the famous car chase scene in Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro.

The last two episodes of Devilman were handled by animation director Takeshi Shirato (白土武), who was heavily involved with the series. Shirato also did the character designs for Miyo, Muzan, and possibly Lala. He’d also go on to do exclusive artwork for the Devilman Roman Album.
What’s interesting is that Shirato made Akira look extremely different in the last episode. The above screencaps are from episode 38 and 39. Akira’s appearance in 38 is very inline with how he’s typically drawn in Shirato’s episodes. On the other hand, the last episode is overly detailed and more “mature” looking. It also makes me wonder if he was trying to go for Kazuo Komatsubara’s style (who did the character designs) or Go Nagai’s style? Akira is the only character to look drastically different in the final episode.
Here’s a comparison of how the characters look in the first episode (handled by Komatsubara) vs. the final episode (by Shirato):
Something else I find interesting... a lot of Go Nagai series that Toei produced had the same animation director for the last two episodes. Devilman, Cutie Honey, Dororon Enma-kun, Getter Robo G and even Majokko Tickle followed this “system.” It’s really weird and I wish I knew why.
