The Rise and Impact of India’s Pro Kabaddi League
Tumblr media
In 2014, a revolution quietly began in the Indian sports arena, not on the cricket pitch, but on the kabaddi mat. This was the year the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) was launched, an initiative that would transform an age-old sport into a national sensation. As I delve into the story of PKL, it's a narrative of innovation, growth, and the reimagining of a traditional sport.
The Visionaries Behind the League
The seeds of this transformation were sown by Mashal Sports Pvt. Ltd, co-founded by Anand Mahindra and Charu Sharma in 1994. Their vision was clear: to elevate kabaddi to an international standard. This vision was shared and supported by the broadcasting giant Disney Star, which helped bring the sport into the living rooms of millions. The inaugural edition of PKL in 2014 marked a turning point, not just for kabaddi but for Indian sports broadcasting.
Expanding Horizons
The expansion of PKL has been nothing short of phenomenal. In its fifth edition, the league added four new teams - Gujarat Giants, Haryana Steelers, Tamil Thalaivas, and U.P. Yoddhas. This expansion made PKL India's largest sports league in terms of geographical representation and the number of teams. It was a bold move that paid off, intensifying the competition and enhancing the excitement around kabaddi.
Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 Highlights
As we approach Season 10, the excitement is palpable. The league is returning to its home-and-away format for the first time since the pandemic, and the anticipation among fans and players is sky-high. Teams like U Mumba are witnessing a 60% increase in brand sponsorships, a clear indicator of the league's growing appeal.
Brand Engagement and Economic Impact
The economic impact of PKL is significant. Brands, especially those targeting audiences in tier two and tier three cities, are flocking to the league. Investment in sponsorships is soaring, with some brands committing up to Rs 2.5 crore. This surge in brand engagement is not just about numbers; it reflects a deeper shift in how brands view sports marketing in India.
Impact of Pro Kabaddi League on Indian Sports
With a viewership of 222 million in its last season, PKL stands as the second most-watched sports league in India, trailing only the IPL. This 17.5% increase in viewership from the previous season underscores the league's growing popularity. It's a testament to how PKL has captured the imagination of the nation, transcending the urban-rural divide.
Team Strategies and Innovations
Teams in PKL are not just playing kabaddi; they are redefining sports marketing. Take Puneri Paltan, for example. Their focus on social media, fan engagement, and influencer marketing is a blueprint for how sports teams can amplify their reach and connect with fans in the digital age.
Brand Sponsorships in the Pro Kabaddi League
The story of brand sponsorships in PKL is a fascinating one. From traditional sectors like cement and fertilizers to modern industries like EV and gaming, the league has attracted a diverse range of sponsors. This shift not only highlights the league's wide appeal but also its potential as a lucrative platform for brand visibility and engagement.
The Future of Kabaddi
Looking ahead, the league is not just resting on its laurels. There's talk of starting a women's version of the league, a move that would further elevate the sport. The success of PKL has shown that there's a vast, untapped potential in traditional sports when they are repackaged and marketed with a modern twist.
The Pro Kabaddi League is more than just a sports league; it's a cultural phenomenon that has redefined the landscape of Indian sports. It has shown that with the right mix of vision, innovation, and marketing, even a traditional sport like kabaddi can become a national obsession. As we gear up for Season 10, one thing is clear: the kabaddi mat is set for more thrilling action, and the nation is ready to cheer. The story of PKL is not just about sports; it's about the power of transformation and the endless possibilities that lie within the realms of passion and innovation.

[ad_1] Arjun Deshwal supports Pink Panthers, the raider with the most raid points and the defender with the most tackle points were both on the Jaipur-based team. Ninth Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) season began on October 7, 2022, and lasted two months, taking place at four different locations. In contrast to the prior season, spectators were permitted to watch the game live, and the league stages were split among three locations. The first leg was held in Bengaluru, with the second leg taking place in Pune, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The only team that didn’t advance to the playoffs but still finished in the top four and made it to the semifinals in season 9 was Tamil Thalaivas. Tamil Thalaivas, which debuted in season 5, has only ever placed last or in the bottom two. The Pink Panthers main raider, Pawan Sehrawat, was sidelined for the whole season after suffering an injury in the first game. Things grew worse for the southern team when Sagar, the right corner defender, was hurt in the latter stages of the league stage. Even though the team lost two key players, Ashan Kumar supported each player’s performance rather than depending on their brilliance. The void left by Pawan Sehrawat was filled by a teenage prodigy named Narender Kandola. For the Tamil Thalaivas, Narender Kandola recorded 243 raid points in a single season (the record was previously held by Ajay Thakur) Pink Panthers. Read More: Best cover teams for Pro Kabaddi Season 9 Auctions In the PKL’s history Pink Panthers, Pawan Sehrawat was the most expensive purchase and made history. The most expensive purchase in the PKL’s inaugural season was roughly 14 lakh rupees, but as the league has expanded quickly, players are now in a solid financial position. Pawan paid a staggering 2.26 crores to Tamil Thalaivas. The top bids in PKL season nine went to Bengaluru Bulls for Vikash Kandola (1.7 crores), Puneri Paltan for Fazel Athrachali (1.38 crores), and U Mumba for Guman Singh (1.25 crores). Twenty international players were present as opposed to 24 (in season 8) after each organization had used up its two-player allotment. Best Raiders Mr. Arjun Deshwal Raid Points: 296 | Matches: 24 After leading the Jaipur Pink Panthers in raid points the previous season, Arjun Deshwal was retained by the team. The raider was four points short of reaching the legendary 300 raid points milestone, which has only been attained by a select few players in the past (Pardeep Narwal, Pawan Sehrawat, and Naveen Kumar). He was the sole raider in 80% of the games, scoring 100 raid points more than the next-best raider from Jaipur (Ajith Kumar).Pink Panthers  Bharat Hooda There were 23 matches and 279 raid points. Bharat scored around 130 raid points while under Pawan Sehrawat’s supervision in the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League. After Pawan Sehrawat changed bases, Bharat assumed the lead raiding position in the presence of seasoned raider Vikash Kandola (2nd costliest buy in season 9). Naveen Kumar Raid Points: 254 | Matches: 23 Naveen Kumar got out to a strong start in the season, scoring nine straight Super 10, but he lost his mojo in the middle. In the last round of league play, he made a great recovery and led Dabang Delhi KC to a fourth straight playoff position. Best defenders Ankush Rathee matches: 24; tackle points: 89 Ankush Rathee had 89 tackle points in his first PKL season and had help from veteran defenders Sunil Kumar and Sahul Kumar. The Jaipur Pink Panthers were the only team in PKL season 9 to have three defenders who scored 50 or more tackle points. According to the match, an old saying goes, “Raiders win your matches, but defenders win you titles.”Pink Panthers Mohammad Reza Chiyana 20 matches; 84 tackle points Due to outside circumstances, Chiyanedh missed the first two matches but has since played consistently. He is the only defender in history to accumulate 16 tackle points in a single game, all of which came from super tackles. The Iranian carried on where
he had left off the season before and was once more listed among the top three tacklers in terms of points. During the ninth season of the Vivo Pro Kabaddi League, Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh improved as a defender. Chiyaneh set the season record for most tackle points (16 points) in a single game with 84 tackle points Pink Panthers. Read More: Who are the best young test captains in history? Saurabh Nandal (Bengaluru Bulls) Matches: 24; Tackle Points: 72 Together with left-corner defender Aman, Saurabh Nandal combined for 72 tackle points. For the third straight season, Saurabh has led the Bengaluru Bulls’ defense with solid performance. Bharat made sure the Bulls successfully collected raid points, and Saurabh Nandal engaged the opposing team’s raiders. In the ninth season of the Vivo Pro Kabaddi league, Nadal’s 72 tackle points helped the Bulls place in the semifinals. Top 10 Best and Most Handsome Kabaddi Players
Kabaddi is a game originated in ancient India. It’s such a thrilling sport to watch as an audience but sadly kabaddi players in India are still to be known on that level where we have taken cricketers as fans. Kabaddi has some basic rules. There are 7 players on each side and is played for a duration of 40 minutes with a 5 minutes break.
Here we talk about top 10 kabaddi players in India and abroad who have not missed any chance to showcase their talent and extraordinary skills on an International level.
Tumblr media
Pardeep Narwal:
Pardeep Narwal was born on Feb 16, 1997. He hails from Haryana and currently plays for the Indian national kabaddi team. Pardeep also plays for Patna Pirates in the Pro Kabaddi League(PKL). He is currently one of the biggest sensations amongst the Kabaddi players in India. This 21-year-old helped Patna Pirates win the title(third time) in the last season of Pro Kabaddi League 2017. He even became the best raider of that season.
Pardeep is also titled as “Dubki King”, a move where the raider ducks low off the ground and then launches himself up to escape from the grip of the opponent and earn some points. His 8 point raid against Haryana steelers in season 5 of pro kabaddi league is one big golden moment of his career.
Manjeet Chillar:
Manjeet Chillar is an all-rounder and hence is named as “One man army” due to his amazing all-around skills. He was also a part of the Indian Kabaddi team where they won a gold at the Asian Games 2014. His signature move is Block where the defender places himself in the raider’s way and blocks his way between him and the half line.
Fazel Atrachali:
One of the handsome kabaddi players, this Iranian defender is one deadly player to look out for. He has the skill to hold down any raider within no time. He got famous after being a part of  U Mumba who won the PKL title in season 2. His signature move is Dash which is an aggressive move in which a defender sprints across the mat and using his force the raider out of the boundary.
Anup Kumar:
He has been a part of the Indian Kabaddi team when they earned Asian gold medals in 2010 and 2014. Anup is the captain of Jaipur Pink Panthers in PKL. He is known for his strategies and was the highest scorer in season 1 of PKL where he scored 169 points. He is known for “toe touch”, a move which involves the extension of the leg to touch the feet of the defender’s feet with just his toes.
Sandeep Narwal:
Sandeep was a defender first but then went on to become an all-rounder after brushing his raiding skills. He is one of the few all-rounders who has 200+ points in both raid and tackle points. His signature move is also Block, same as of Manjeet Chillar.
Meraj Sheykh:
Meraj is easily one of the best all-rounders in the currently playing in PKL. His both tackling and raiding skills are something to watch out for. He is an Iranian all-rounder who has lead the Iranian kabaddi team in various tournaments. His signature move is scorpion kick in which the raider turns towards the midline and then makes a sudden motion of leg up to touch the defender just like a scorpion would attack to sting.
Nitin Tomar:
This 23-year-old raider came into light after he literally rescued India in a do or die raid at the Kabaddi World Cup 2016 against Iran and ultimately won the game. He was the highest scorer for his side, Up yoddha in season 5 of PKL with a total of 177 points. His signature move is “running hand touch”, it’s a sudden move of moving towards the defender whilst stretching the whole body to touch the defender in a quick motion with his hands.
Rohit Kumar:
Rohit Kumar is one of the handsome kabaddi players in India, started his PkL journey with a bang. He scored a total of 109 points for Patna Pirates. He rose to fame after single-handedly picking up 32 points against Up Yoddha in season 5. His signature move is the “frog jump” the raider launches himself off the ground to touch the defenders and lands beyond their reach and get back to his side.
Jang Kun Lee:
Jang is a Korean Raider who has a record for earning the most points by any overseas player in Pro Kabaddi. He has captained the Republic of Korea’s Kabaddi team for various international tournaments. His signature move is “Kick” which involves extending the leg instead of your hand to touch the defender as quickly as possible.
Ajay Thakur:
The current captain of the India Kabaddi Team needs no introduction. His stunning performance is one of the main reasons behind the victory of India at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. He was the top raider of that tournament. His experience also helped India win a Gold at the Incheon Asian Games 2014. With over 14 years of experience, he has always been a treat to watch for Kabaddi fans. He is currently leading Tamil Thalaivas in season 6 of PKL. His signature move: Frog jump.
