Amazing Adventures in Auntieing #3
Traveling with kids is different. Travelling with other people, even, is different. I hadn’t done that in a while either, but with kids… not since my best friend and I came to this area with her daughter, who was then an infant! They have so much energy, want to be entertained by television or otherwise… definitely different! The space here has been very helpful, since it’s big enough I can…

What I Learned in Canada, One
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somebody asked me, yesterday, what I would wish for if I had one wish. It wasn’t that hard to come up with, even though it may be something else altogether tomorrow: If I could, I would move both my families – all the Allmans and Joys and Leonardos and Tilleys and Fords from Out West and all the Bodys and Blounts and Baileys and Eatons from Back East – to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Most…

Post 10
For project 2 I’m going to do a branding and label for our home-brewed mead.
Tumblr media
I found these small bottle that I love, originally from Tofino distillery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My most fleshed out idea is Midnight Mead, a space-themed brand. I plan to use textured darker paper, and fill the above-logo area with constellations of honeycombs and flavour relevant illustrations.
The bottom part would have the info about the flavour and size etc. I’d like to print black on the dark paper, and then use heat embossing powder to make that stand out. I need to test this method first of course, but it could turn out really neat.
Tumblr media
My other idea doesn’t have a brand name, and is quite different from the first. This label would still be textured but much lighter, like a yellowed parchment. The labels are honeycomb shaped, but could have a more organic shape along one edge to better match the illustrations which would be the focus here.

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #363 - Tofino Distillery Lavender Mint Gin
DISTILLERY NOTES
A seasonal favourite, this Gin draws inspiration from the Organic Lavender fields in France where it is harvested. It boasts heavy floral notes with a smooth touch of mint.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
Found this little number from Tofino Distillery at Tudor House Liquor Store, not that I need anymore gins; but what's one more. This has a big floral whop on the nose balanced with that very terroir driven Tofino aroma of cut pine and sea breeze, the palate doubles down on that with textural fragrance of lavender and the bite of menthol from the mint.
Alcohol - 45% / 90 proof
Color - Clear
Nose - Classic Tofino terroir driven aromas of cut cedar and sea air with wafts of lavender and hints of mint
Taste - Starts with the classic West coast Gin notes of their house gin, piney, bright botanicals and then slides into soft lavender and menthol mint
Finish - The lavender is predominant in flavor with the spice of mint in the background
Best Enjoyed - Bees Knees variation

Guide to the Best Breweries & Wineries on Vancouver Island
Where to sip and swirl from Victoria to Tofino.PHILLIPS BREWING & MALTING CO. - Founded by a group of “beer-loving adventurers,” this Victoria-based, award-winning brewery has flourished into one of the Capitol City’s finest, with a tasting room, soda company, distillery and the only malting facility of its kind in Canada. Patriarch Matt Phillips malts his own barley, working with local farmers to increase the creativity of their recipes. Among Phillips’ many offerings are lagers, ales, IPAs and Pilsners, including Blue Buck, Hop Circle IPA and the aptly named Amnesiac Double IPA. Catch the brewing action from the family-friendly Tasting Room, where the knowledgeable staff loves to talk beer and find the perfect label for the craft beer lover’s discerning palate. RIOT BREWING CO. - Located in the seaside town of Chemainus, BC, Riot Brewing Co. is famous not only for its incredible selection of craft beers but for its murals, artist-designed labels, outdoor kid and dog-friendly patio, and incredible skate park. A destination for the whole family to enjoy for the afternoon, the brewery also hosts open mic events, kitchen parties, live music and comedy shows. Order a picnic lunch or pizza from one of the neighboring restaurants to pair with Lipslide Lager, Life Partners Pale Ale or Working Class Hero Dark Mild, awarded gold at the 2018 World Beer Cup. HOYNE BREWING CO. - Hoyne Brewing Company has been brewing fine craft beer in Victoria since 2011, led by Sean Hoyne, a master of his craft since 1989. Flavourful, interesting selections include its famed Hoyne Pilsner, Alpha Acid IPA, Helios and Appleton E.S.B. Stop in to the standing-room only tap room on Bridge Street for a sampler and to browse label collaborations designed by local artists. CHURCH & STATE WINES - Located just 15 minutes from Victoria, Church & State Wines Brentwood is Vancouver Island’s largest and most prolific winery, offering a true Pacific Northwest experience. Pouring award-winning wines from both its island and Okanagan vineyards, Church & State is a must for visitors to the island, featuring a Tasting Bar and Bistro, open from March to December, pairing locally inspired cuisine with award-winning wines. The winery also offers an incredible setting for tours and private events of all styles and sizes. UNSWORTH VINEYARDS - Nestled in the Cowichan Valley between Victoria and Nanaimo, Unsworth Vineyards is a family-owned winery handcrafting award-winning wines in the island’s Mediterranean-like microclimate. Farming 12 acres of grape varieties, the winery uses small production by design to craft exceptional wines. Visit the tasting room, stroll the grounds and gardens overlooking the winery, and enjoy exceptional pairings in the Unsworth Restaurant. TOFINO BREWING CO. - A trip to Tofino wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Tofino Brewing Co., which brews small batch craft beer using malted barley and Pacific Northwest Hops. Aimed at being a positive addition to the oceanside destination, the brewery operates in a sustainable and locally focused manner. The tasting room is open daily serving flights of their staples and seasonal brews, including Tuff Session Ale, Hoppin Cretin IPA and Kelp Stout.     Guide to the Best Breweries & Wineries on Vancouver Island published first on https://real-estate-sg.weebly.com/

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #278 - Tofino Distillery Beach Fire
DISTILLERY NOTES
Our one and only "Beach Fire" cinnamon spirit is a truly unique product made from our bourbon base, drawing inspiration from some more commonly found cinnamon style products.
This lighter alcohol spirit is distinct, pulling its sweetness from the high corn mash as well as the addition of organic cane sugar, while delivering all the warmth and astringency of real organic cinnamon.
Originally designed to be passed around the bonfire, it also doubles as a flask-filler on the ski hill because it's great as a straight up sipper.
In the winter months it can be added to hot apple cider or hot cocoa and even some hibiscus iced (or not) tea.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
A craft take on that liqueur that everyone loves on the snow fields, it rhymes with Lirecall. I don't love cinnamon in anyway but I can see this by the fire off the shore of Tofino, it comes in sweet cinnamon roll and then the cinnamon spice just dries out leaves you wanting to more.
Alcohol - 36% / 72 proof
Color - Dark cola brown
Nose - Just bold cinnamon, dry and aromatic
Taste - Sweet cinnamon on the front palate and then dries right out and leaves you lingering
Finish - Cinnamon, cinnamon, cinnamon
Best Enjoyed - Chilled on the beach

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #239 - Tofino Distillery Limoncello
DISTILLERY NOTES
This nod to the classic Italian liqueur does not stray far from its inspiration. A precise combination of organic lemons and cane sugar come together to create this distinctly lemon-yellow tipple.
Using only the zest of the lemons makes this liqueur bright but not tart, while the organic cane sugar allows for a natural sweetness and creates a velvety texture.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
I have a guilty pleasure in Limoncello because it reminds of childhood. Tofino Distillery Limoncello is gorgeously balanced with bright, acidic high notes of fresh peel and lemon sweetness. Long and flavorful, aromatic lemon, sweet citrus just lasts forever on the palate.
Alcohol - 28.5% / 57 proof
Color -Lemonade
Nose - Sour sweet lemonade on the nose
Taste - I described this as suburban lemonade stand and I am going to stand by that. Not overly sweet, sour lemonade all the way through
Finish - Sour, tart lemons
Best Enjoyed - On the rocks topped with soda

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #229 - Odd Society Salal Gin Haida Gwaii
DISTILLERY NOTES
Salal Gin is Odd Society’s answer to British Sloe Gin. Since sloe berries aren’t native to Canada, we hit upon salal as our local equivalent. We had high hopes of releasing “vast” quantities this year but it was a dry season and salal berries and foragers were not plentiful. Luckily, Alexander McNaughton, a forager based in Tofino, was able to gather some for us, as well as Barbara, a resident of the Sunshine Coast.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
The second release of this year's Salal Gin from Odd Society is same but different from the first release from Powell River. While the Powell River was a umami bomb wrapped in berries, this one blows up with berries on berries on berries, not cloying sweet, balanced Wallflower Gin with a myriad of berries from blueberry pie to sticky haskap and blackcurrant.
Alcohol - 30% / 60 proof
Color - Deep purple
Nose - Spectrum of berries from stewed blueberry pie to fresh blackcurrant and haskap
Taste - Balanced flavors with the gin, fresh and forward. The gin works with the fruity sweetness of the berries and allows both of them to shine
Finish - Dry gin botanicals, high and bright berry with little to no residual sweetness
Best Enjoyed - Would love to see this in a gimlet

BC Spirits "Spirits a Day" #218 - Odd Society Spirits Salal Gin Powell River
DISTILLERY NOTES
Salal Gin is Odd Society’s answer to British Sloe Gin. Since sloe berries aren’t native to Canada, we hit upon salal as our local equivalent. We had high hopes of releasing “vast” quantities this year but it was a dry season and salal berries and foragers were not plentiful. Luckily, Alexander McNaughton, a forager based in Tofino, was able to gather some for us, as well as Barbara, a resident of the Sunshine Coast.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
The first batch of this years Odd Society Spirits cult Salal Gin is made from Salal berries from Powell River. Earthy, almost umami notes balance out the strong black currants, Haskap, blueberry notes. I can’t wait to do a side by side taste of these three batches. A true expression and exploration of terroir this year.
Alcohol - 30% / 60 proof
Color - Deep purple
Nose - Blackcurrant, umami earthy notes and hints of blueberries and haskap
Taste - Bursts of blackcurrant, haskap and blueberries with a lingering savory earthiness that balances out the sweetness
Finish - Dry and tannic berry notes with that long earthy notes
Best Enjoyed - Try it in a gimlet

BC Spirits "Spirit a Day" #111 - Tofino Distillery West Coast Gin
DISTILLERY NOTES
Traditional West Coast Style Gin.  Our take on this classic is well rounded with a blend of floral, woods and citrus notes.
BC SPIRITS NOTES
Tofino Distillery really nails the terroir of Tofino and distills it into a bottle. Pine, sea air, bright complex botanicals makes for a fantastic gin that if you love Tofino and that sea side village feeling, you need this.
Alcohol - 45% / 90 Proof
Color - Clear
Nose - Woody juniper and forest floor
Taste - Deep flavors of woody juniper, warm spices with a great representation of Tofino, forest and sea air.
Finish - Long piney juniper with undertones of warm spices
Best Enjoyed - Ballsy Martini with Beaufort Vermouth and orange bitters

Review #50 - Citrus Off!
After doing the "Spirit of the Day" with Gillespie's Fine Spirits Lemoncello, I had a call to tackle more limoncellos in BC. I did a tasting way back in the beginning , but it was time for an update. So I did for the first weekly tasting that I have done in some time. Start by tackling some new buys, Moonshine Spirits Citrus Gin, Arbutus Distillery Limoncello, Tofino Distillery Limoncello along with some old favorites in Wood's Limoncello and the underrated Legend Distilling Manitou.
