TOMODACHI NO IMOUTO GA ORE NI DAKE UZAI
https://novelvip.net/tomodachi-no-imouto-ga-ore-ni-dake-uzai
I don’t need any deep relationships. I have no desire for a girlfriend, and I only require one friend who holds any value to me. Ever since I threw out my youth for the sake of efficiency, there is one person who keeps entering the bedroom of Ooboshi Akiteru. She’s neither my little sister nor my friend. She’s nothing more than a bothersome, annoying Kouhai, as well as my friend’s little sister: Kohinata Iroha. “Senpai, let’s go on a date~! Did you think I’d say that~?” Rather than blood, it seems like energy drinks run through her veins. She keeps occupying my bed, and she tries her best to seduce me with whatever method she can play to her favor. She’s a girl who’s constantly annoying and obnoxious around me. Even though I’m busy all day long, she doesn’t care. And in case you’re wondering why all these envious gazes are directed at me, it’s because Iroha is actually really popular. She’s an honor student at our school with top grades to boot, and she’s known for being kind and proper to anyone she meets. …Hey now, why are you only so annoying when you’re around me?
TOMODACHI NO IMOUTO GA ORE NI DAKE UZAI Chapter 1
[ ? Hanamichi’s rebellion, our anuses, the one kicking you is the friend’s little sister ? ]
When I came home from school and entered my bedroom, what immediately entered my line of sight were thighs. A girl with whom I was very familiar was lying on top of my bed, casually tapping her legs to the rhythm. She had selfishly borrowed the newest release of a shounen manga from my bookshelf, and she looked like she was in a good mood.

Reader’s Corner: Frozen 2, Those Not-So Sweet Boys, and My Friend’s Little Sister Has it it for Me!
The Apothecary Diaries, Vol. 1
This is quite a different light novel from what we’re used to seeing. It features a unique setting inspired by a historic Chinese imperial palace, complete with consorts, eunuchs, internal politics, and people of varying levels of morality. The protagonist, Maomao, is a teenage girl and apothecary worker in a red-light district that had been kidnapped and sold into service in the rear palace. She’s also quite the “mad scientist” who likes personally testing poisons and seeing their effects and how much she can handle of them. This does make her ideal for her eventual job as poison tester to one of the consorts, but also gives her a curious streak that gets her involved in all sorts of incidents, as well as draws the attention of the beautiful “eunuch” Jinshi. The book does read like a mystery novel at times, as Maomao figures out more about the reasons behind various incidents, some of which tie in to events later in the book, so just because one “mystery” is solved doesn’t mean it is completely out of the picture. Maomao’s antics also add a lot of comedy to the story, as her constant pursuit of medical knowledge and her overall snarky and amusing observations of story events provide for plenty of entertainment to keep readers interested in everything going on. This combination of a unique and interesting setting, intriguing storylines, and Maomao’s chaos makes this one of the best new light novels I have started, and is definitely recommended for those looking for something different. ~ stardf29
The Apothecary Diaries Vol. 1 is available from J-Novel Club.
Star⇄Crossed!!, Vol. 1
The newest series from Junko, the mangaka behind Kiss Him, Not Me, features the same irreverent humor packaged into a body-switching story line. Chika is a pop idol member of the group, Prince 4 U, and Azusa is his biggest fan. The two find themselves switching bodies due to a heavenly error after she attempts to save him from an accident, and hi-jinks (and a little romance) ensue. Similar to her previously popular series, this one leans toward the outrageous end in its comedy (“God” features prominently as he tries to rectify the error his people—angels?—caused) and also dips in and out between straight romance and yaoi relationships, while establishing compelling characters and a breakneck pace. Highly entertaining, it’s similarities in tone and story to Kiss Him, Not Me ensure that if you like that series, this one is also likely to tickle your fancy. ~ Twwk
Star⇄Crossed!! Vol. 1 is available through Kodansha.
Haru’s Curse
When Haru died, she left behind a devoted and high energy older sister, Natsume, and Togo, a quiet, wealthy fiance. The funeral should have ended their connection, but at Togo’s request, the two start on a peculiar relationship that, guided along by the changing seasons, will take them through challenges of family, grief, and heartbreak. This one-volume work begins from such a painful moment that one would think it would be dark and depressing throughout. And though it is quite moody, Haru’s Curse is also often humorous and features surprising moments of optimism, though always saturated by an authenticity that grounds this manga in real world emotions and choices. The art style is angular and sparse, which was difficult for me to engage with at first, but by the end seemed natural, and even quite beautiful in the few pages that are colored. And the story, as simple as it is, feels complete despite some discomfort the ending brings—though it feels as if this lovely little find, which at one point brought me dangerously close to tears, could only end in the way it does. ~ Twwk
Haru’s Curse is available through Kodansha.
My Friend’s Little Sister Has it in for Me! Vol. 1
Akiteru is pretty sure every girl around him holds him in disdain. Whether it’s his best friend’s sister Iroha, who teases him mercilessly, or his uncle’s daughter Mashiro, who was forced to pretend to be his girlfriend and has no intention to act the part when not in public, he can’t imagine that the trope of girls being mean to the guy they like could possibly be true. The reality is, of course, that there’s more to these characters than at first glance, both for Aki and for the readers. The characters definitely make for the highlight of this light novel, especially as they start to help each other out as they learn more about each other. Also, Aki leads a small indie game company, which plays a big part of the story, albeit with more of a focus on the characters’ ambitions rather than the specifics of how the game is made. Overall this is a great read that I’m looking forward to reading more of, and with an anime adaptation coming, it is also a perfect time to check out the source material beforehand. ~ stardf29
My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In For Me! Vol. 1 is available from J-Novel Club.
Those Not-So-Sweet Boys, Vol. 1
Part of the appeal of shoujo is when a series turns the bad boy into a good boy, thereby capturing, well, everything that can be attractive about males in the first place. Well, what about doing that for three central characters? That’s the plot for Those Not-So-Sweet Boys, in which optimistic protagonist, Midori, finds herself tasked with getting three delinquents to coming back to school and being part of the class. There’s nothing ground-breaking here, but much like the most beloved shoujo series, this one is highly engaging by attracting us to all the central characters in the tale. Combined with lovely character designs, it more than makes up for a lack of creativity and detailing, and in fact, judging from volume one, could be the road toward becoming a very, very special series. ~ Twwk
Those Not-So-Sweet Boys, Vol. 1 is available through Kodansha.
Frozen 2
Frozen 2 is, as the title suggests, is a manga adaptation of the Disney film of the same name. It’s a gorgeous, single volume manga by Arina Tanemura, who is well known in the shoujo world and was one of the lead character designers for Idolish7. Her artwork is expressive and encapsulates the characters from the film very well. However, some of the plot is cut for space. If you aren’t familiar with the movie, there may be some confusion. But let’s face it…who is going to read a Frozen 2 manga adaptation besides those who have already seen the movie? I, for one, loved Frozen 2 and also loved this manga adaptation. While it’s rated “Teen,” it is definitely appropriate for younger readers. My nine-year-old read it immediately after me, proving that both the story and this manga have plenty to give for adults and children alike. I’m certainly glad I read it. ~ MDMRN
Frozen 2 is available through Viz.

Manga the Week of 2/10/21
SEAN: Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the manga is so delightful.
Airship has an early digital release of Berserk of Gluttony 2 and the print release of Adachi and Shimamura 4.
Cross Infinite World has a one-shot shoujo light novel, As The Villainess, I Reject These Happy-Bad Endings! (Watashi, Tensei Akuyaku Reijōnanode, Meribaendo wa Soshi sa Sete Itadakimasu!). You can probably guess the plot from the title. This also has material in it that was not in the Japanese volume.
J-Novel Club has two digital debuts. Are You Okay With a Slightly Older Girlfriend? (Choppiri Toshiue Demo Kanojo ni Shite Kuremasu ka?) is from GA Bunko, and is about a couple of high school kids who get together… then he finds she’s actually 12 years older than him. This… could be bad, to be honest, but Japan does love those age gap romances.
ASH: That is true; those stories have been around since at least the 11th century.
SEAN: The other debut just had an anime announced. My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! (Tomodachi no Imouto ga Ore ni dake Uzai) is also GA Bunko, which seems to have given J-Novel Club its non-fantasy romcom titles. A guy is constantly belittled by his friend’s sister. But, when he has to pretend to be the boyfriend of the daughter of his boss, will her real feelings come out? Erm… yeah, I’ll try this too, but these two debuts summarize badly.
Also from J-Novel Club, we get The Bloodline 2, Cooking with Wild Game 11, and Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles 13.
Kaiten Books has a new digital manga release, The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting (Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari). This runs in Micro Magazine’s Comic Ride. It seems like one of those “bruiser guy brought to heel by a tiny little girl” sorts of titles. Cute and funny, in other words.
MICHELLE: Hm.
ASH: Oh, I often enjoy that particular sub-genre.
SEAN: No print debuts for Kodansha, but we do get A Couple of Cuckoos 2, Knight of the Ice 5, Something’s Wrong with Us 5, and The Witch and the Beast 4.
MICHELLE: I need to get caught back up on Knight of the Ice!
ANNA: Me too, I really enjoy this series.
ASH: It has been fun, so far!
SEAN: Digitally, the debut is Boss’s Wife (Gokukon ~Chou Dekiai Yakuza to Keiyaku Kekkon!?~), which runs in Ane Friend. A girl with a huge debt runs into a former classmate… who turns out to be a yakuza. He’ll buy her debt if she becomes his bride. Can she be a Yakuza wife? Man, the summaries this week are just brutal.
MICHELLE: I swore I thought this one looked kind of fun, but this summary is making me rethink that assessment.
SEAN: Also digitally: Ashidaka: The Iron Hero 2, the 28th and final volume of Domestic Girlfriend, the 12th and final volume of Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret Ambition, Peach Boy Riverside 4, Saint Young Men 9, Tokyo Revengers 19, and We Must Never Fall in Love 6.
One Peace has a 12th volume of Hinamatsuri.
A debut yuri manga from Seven Seas, Even Though We’re Adults (Otona ni Natte mo). From the creator of Aoi Hana and Wandering Son, this josei title runs in Kodansha’s Kiss magazine. A woman meets an old friend, they go out and more… then she finds the friend has a husband. Didn’t this sort of drama stop in high school? This one I’m definitely excited for.
MICHELLE: Me, too!
ANNA: This sounds interesting.
ASH: I’ve really been looking forward to this one.
MELINDA: I’d read anything from this creator, so count me in!
SEAN: There’s also a 12th Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho.
Square Enix has a 2nd volume of The Apothecary Diaries manga.
ASH: I still need to read the first volume, but i’m fairly confident this is a series I will greatly enjoy.
MELINDA: I have a soft spot for Square Enix basically always, and I need to get around to this, too.
SEAN: SuBLime has a new title, MADK. It runs in Printemps Shuppan’s BL magazine Canna, and MADK stands for Motsu Akuma to Danshi Koukousei. Seems to be rather bloody and violent, and has demons.
ASH: I am intrigued!
MELINDA: I like everything in this description, so yes!
SEAN: There’s a 10th volume of Finder’s Deluxe Edition, subtitled Honeymoon, and Given 5 from SuBLime as well.
ASH: I’m a volume or so behind on Given; this would be a good opportunity for me to catch up.
SEAN: Viz has Frozen 2: the Manga, a tie-in I would normally ignore except it’s by Arina Tanemura. Don’t expect an Idol Dreams crossover.
ANNA: I’m normally all about any Arina Tanemura manga but not sure I’m super stoked for a Frozen adaptation.
SEAN: Viz also has Fullmetal Alchemist: Fullmetal Edition 12, Hayate the Combat Butler 37, Komi Can’t Communicate 11, Pokemon Adventures Collector’s Edition 6, and A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow 6.
MELINDA: Always here for new readers getting into Fullmetal Alchemist (or long-time fans expanding their collections), so I’ll always cheer for that!
SEAN: And Yen has some stragglers from January that got bumped. Including a debut, the manga version of The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat. The LN of this came out at the end of December. The manga runs in Kadokawa’s Young Ace Up.
And finally, after what I swear were 6 or 7 delays, the 4th manga volume of I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level.
Since we’ve no place to go, what manga are you reading?

My Friend's Little Sister Has It In for Me, anime in arrivo per la light novel
My Friend's Little Sister Has It In for Me!).
youtube
Per la serie è stato confermato lo stesso cast che ha recitato nei drama CD:
Akiteru Ohboshi: Haruki Ishiya (Jin Mazama in Seton Academy: Join the Pack!)
Iroha Kohinata: Sayumi Suzushiro (Uruka Takemoto in Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai)
Mashiro Tsukinomori: Tomori Kusunoki (Natsume in Deca-Dence)
Ozuma Kohinata: Soma Saito (Adlet Mayer in Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
Sumire Kageishi: Kana Hanazawa (Ichika Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets)

Reader’s Corner: Solo Leveling, Horimiya, and Love in Focus
My Best Friend’s Little Sister Has it in for Me, Vol. 1
Ten or fifteen years ago, I was involved in a roleplay writing community. For those that haven’t participated before, the idea is that an admin sets up a scenario (sometimes quite intricate) and players join as characters, taking turns posting paragraphs from their characters’ perspectives and jointly advancing the story. There’s no realistic foundation and little consistency in these roleplays, but if the writers are good, the story is a whole lot of fun. My Sister’s Best Friend Has it in for Me is a lot like those stories—there’s virtually no attempt to create a sense of realism, a story the reader can put himself into, but the tale is so entertaining that it hardly matters. It’s also a little difficult to describe, as this volume is quite ambitious, beginning as the story of a most “average” boy who feels that every girl, including the titular one, Iroha, hates him, before introducing another hater / love interest, Mashiro, who happens to be the daughter he must fake date in order to secure a job for himself and his secret game app development group. Whew, chew on all that. The shenanigans and the protagonist, Aki, are set as purely in the world of tropes as that summary is, but the swift action and frequent dialogue keep the volume extremely engaging (even if I found the fanservice and foul language a little off-putting), but there’s this, too—interludes are used effectively, revealing character insights and even turning the plot suddenly, and when combined with an unexpected reveal toward the end of the volume, emphasize how competent the author, Ghost Mikawa, is. This is a fun tale, written for fans of anime love comedies, but with surprisingly energy and just maybe some unexpected and strong intent. ~ Twwk
My Best Friend’s Little Sister Has it in for Me is published by J-Novel Club.*
Many Are Called
Recently, I was looking through the manga that I own and wanted to see if I hadn’t covered any for Reader’s Corner. To my surprise, I forgot about this manga, Many Are Called, which is based on the biblical text of Matthew 25: 1-13. I had started it a while back, so I determined to finally complete it and give my thoughts, even though it’s already been covered here. The story starts off with Christ sharing to several of his disciples the parable of the ten virgins and then the story of the king who requests guests to come to his banquet. It’s a well illustrated action-drama with the prince going out to save the princess, akin to Christ rescuing His bride from evil. As Twwk mentioned in his review, I would have liked this to be a multiple volume manga to see the characters fleshed out more and given more scenes. Still, after turning the last page, I thanked God for the read and I hope more manga like this is produced soon. I recommend getting a copy if you want something fresh and inspiring. – Samuru
Many Are Called is published by Manga Hero.
Love in Focus, Vol. 2
While I enjoyed volume one of Love in Focus for the most part, I can say that I enjoyed its sequel even more! It continues right after the declaration at the end of the previous volume and into a certain someone making their feelings known, and another experiencing new feelings. With that, I will say my favorite part was seeing the natural progression of Mako realizing she has feelings for a certain someone. I thought it was very well done; I was worried that it would be rushed, but it was far from it! I also really enjoyed getting a backstory chapter about Kei! It was eye-opening to see how he met Mako and realized when he first started loving her, as well as seeing his family dynamics. The photography aspect also continues to be a fun theme to read about, and I loved the little tip that was woven in the story. Though this series hasn’t had very strong cliff hangers, the slightly cliff hanger-y ending has me very interested in seeing what happens in the conclusion of this series! ~ Laura A. Grace
Love in Focus is published by Kodansha.
Solo Leveling, Vol. 2 (Light Novel)
A sneaky good read, Solo Leveling approaches the grimdark isekai genre (without technically being an isekai) with unexpected dramatic elements, slowly unfolding a tale that hasn’t quite revealed itself yet, but is a whole lot closer to it after volume two with the appearance of a new character who has an intimate connection to Jin Woo and a more international story than first anticipated. However, 90% of the story remains firmly set in Jin Woo’s quests and campaigns as he grows exceptionally in power while making partnerships and enemies along the way. And unlike many similar series, the protagonist himself is the most interesting character, complicated and realistic, caring and twisted. With that foundation, the addition of the interesting “game” mechanics and new skills that Jin Woo develops adds further layers to the story, which reads like a wholly original work instead of as a simple adaptation. There’s also a heavy Korean tone to the series, both in the story details (names, meals, locations) and in the it’s general approach, which varies considerably from a Japanese light novel or manga. While I can’t say I’ll finish the story—the moral quandaries of Jin Woo’s choices are both engaging and off-putting—I will say that I breezed through the 300+ page novel in just a couple of days, and am anticipating volume three as well. ~ Twwk
Solo Leveling is published by Yen Press.*
Horimiya, Vol. 1
Several seasons now removed from the stylish anime, and witnessing (and reading about) how the story was rushed through its one cour, I decided to pick up volume one of the manga on which Horimiya was adapted. And indeed, although the story about the connection that develops between the popular Hori and gloomy Miyamura (who both hide unsuspecting parts of themselves) is generally the same, as much of volume one was covered almost panel by panel in the adaptation, there are already significant differences showing—portions cut out, important characterization missed, and items placed out of order. It makes for a read that’s both familiar and new. There’s a loveliness to this story, a strong heart, and plenty of humor as well—all enough to interest me in continuing with the manga, even if I already know how it all ends. ~ Twwk
Horimiya is published by Yen Press.*
=====
Reader’s Corner is our way of embracing the wonderful world of manga, light novels, and visual novels, creative works intimately related to anime but with a magic all their own. Each week, our writers provide their thoughts on the works their reading—both those recently released as we keep you informed of newly published works and older titles that you might find as magical (or in some cases, reprehensible) as we do.
