BMW FanFic Rec List: Updated 02/17/24
Tumblr media
I felt it was time to put together a list of my favorite BMW stories. These are the hidden gems that I feel deserve more love.
Tumblr media
All these rec can be found in my AO3 collection and is often updated first.
If you check any of these out, I'm sure the authors would love to hear your thoughts.

Tumblr media
Topanga Meets The World by osced
There are just not enough Topanga-focused fics out there. This one takes a look what was going on with Topanga and her family when she wasn't with Cory.
Tumblr media
Murphy's Fool by darkblueau- This is an incredible look at all the continuity and character inconsistencies we saw in BMW through Eric's eyes.
Very clever.
Tumblr media
Boy Meets Family by Myfavoritefoodissoftpretzels
The boy in this story is Shawn and it takes a closer look at his life with Chet and Virna post "Fishing for Virna". The thing that makes this story so unique is that it keeps the sitcom vibe of the show while dealing with more serious issues. It's rare to see someone follow the show's formula.
Complete with Cory and Shawn antics, this WIP is worth checking out.
Tumblr media
How Can You Blame Me? Growing Up Is Chaotic by @winterlovesong1 - I'm linking to her entire profile because there is just too much Shawn/Angela goodness to pick just one story. Her character study of Shawn is perfection. Her writing has an ethereal quality which make her stories feel like a dream.
Tumblr media
For Those Who Would Wish In Happily Ever Afters by @justanotherpersonwhowrites - this is a WIP that is very much worth checking out. It's a fresh look at Jon and Shawn's relationship post "Cult Fiction". Shawn is spiraling after Virna's letter turns his life upside down. With nowhere left to go, he ends up back at apartment 8.
Aside from the plot itself being engaging, there is an OC introduced who is new to Shawn but not to Jon. If you like Audrey, you'll like Sarah.
Tumblr media
They Say Ignorance Is Bliss by @justanotherpersonwhowrites
Beautiful take on Cory and Shawn's friendship from Cory's POV. Canon inconsistencies are mentioned and given a twist that makes sense. Pre-show set up for this iconic friendship.
Tumblr media
My Own Boy Meets World Reboot by @obscureobsidiandraws - I cannot recommend this one enough and it deserves more attention than it's getting. I can't find a complaint that BMW fans have had over the years that isn't addressed and corrected. While changes have been made to character backgrounds and it's no longer the 90s the heart and humor of the show shines through.
If you like early seasons Eric, you'll definitely want to look into this. Those wanting Jonathan Turner to adopt Shawn will be happy too. Audrey is also a part of the cast, although with a bit of change to her as well. It's been a lot of fun discovering this new version of her.
The series is written in script format, but I encourage you not to skip past it because of that. These scripts are detailed and make me feel like I'm watching the show as I read.
For an idea of what the series will be like, learn about it here and here.
Tumblr media
Let's Get All the Mirrors at the Bottom of the Well by Veillee- set before the show begins, this one shot takes a look at Shawn's life with Stacy and Eddie.
Tumblr media
A Test of Time by The Rising Phoenix- Shawn is struggling with losing Angela so his best friends step in with a distraction that takes him on a journey through NYC.
I love this one for the concept.
Although unfinished on AO3 it is complete on FFN.

[ mimi keene | cis woman | she/her | twenty-five ] ——   welcome to grimrose, yasmina abadi. it’s cool that you’re here, you know. haven’t you heard of the history of this place… anyway, how’s being a local who has been in town for twenty years, especially since you spend most of your days as a librarian and radio show host? also, not that it’s a bad thing, of course, but i’ve heard people say you can be a little distrusting more than you are loyal… but that’s just coming from people who are bored here, i promise. to me, you remind me of fake plastic trees by radiohead and the dim lights of the trailer park, years of research of beings not of this earth, and loving mysteries so much she became one. hope to see you around, mina.
full name — yasmina abadi nickname(s) — mina, yas, abadi name meaning — jasmine flower age — twenty-five date of birth — february 19th place of birth — sugar hill, new hampshire  current location — grimrose, new hampshire gender — cis-woman pronouns — she/her sexual orientation — demisexual, queer religion — islam though non practicing / agnostic / it’s complicated occupation — librarian during the day, radioshow host for harbinger cross by night  education level — masters in library science, bachelors in ufology ( yes she did study this !! ) family — arham abadi, serafina lassiter finances — poor spoken languages — arabic, english, some farsi voiceclaim — mimi keene
inspos: velma dinkley (scooby-doo), boo (fleabag), cassie ainsworth (skins), eleven (stranger things), susan storm (fantastic four), waymand wang (everything everywhere all at once), topanga lawrence (boy meets world), willow rosenberg (buffy the vampire slayer), will byers (stranger things), rogue (x-men), alice cullen (twilight lol)
tw: mentions of alcohol abuse but non descriptive, neglectful parents
yasmina was raised by a single father that never really how to father. it hadn’t always been like that, she thinks, but it’s been so long she doesn’t really remember any differently. her mother pushed out of the family because of her dad. it’s just been the two of them, though as yasmina’s gotten older his health has been declining due to his inability of letting go and putting down the drinks. while yasmina is sympathetic that not many of his friends had made it out of the war she still misses her dad and who he used to be.
before he became who he was now he had shared his love and interests of all things cryptids and aliens, wanting to believe that they were so much more than themselves. the two had so much in common when mina was a child, looking up at the stars and wondering why. though as mina grew up the more she had to become to provider for the two of them as her dad’s health was starting to decline and he had become more erratic. but she loved her father, it was them against the world, at least that was what he would say.
they moved to grimrose when property was cheap, but they could only really afford the trailer park but to mina it had been a paradise as it said in the name. she remembers many trips to the forest looking for the entities that would haunt the town but would think that maybe they were misunderstood. not every spirit could truly ever be evil, they all had a story to tell. and if you were to ask her she would claim that she’s seen much of the folklore and absolutely revels in it.
high school wasn’t easy, it was hard to make friends but she excelled by staying late and finishing her homework and extracurricular activities, she managed to graduate a year early than her classmates which helped her in getting her masters degree to work at the library. she had packed up her car quickly after she graduated to take a trip around the states to all the hot spots that claimed to have been alien sightings and paranormal activity, during this small gap year she interviewed a lot of people of what they had seen and started to pick up where her father had left off on his book about ufology. she’s still writing this book to this day.
not long after did she start the process of getting her radio show which is now called harbingers cross, it’s a late night show with not that many listeners but she goes into a deep dive of all the lore that grimrose has to offer, and while it’s not popular it’s very loved by those that do turn in! she frequently tries to get guests on and tell their stories about what they’ve seen in grimrose and does a lot of research into the folklore. the show is her passion project and her pride and joy. her main focus of her radioshow is to give skeptics and people that may not understand some perspective that while their town is different that doesn’t mean that it’s bad.
personality wise she’s a ride or die for anyone that’s close to her, will often make a big batch of whatever she’s cooking and bring it over to whoever that needs it. she can look mean ( due to her resting bitch face ) but she’s just quiet and has a lot of love to give.
headcanons:
she found a stray kitten in the alleyway outside of greasy spoons diner, and decided to take it home and nurse it back to health since it was missing part of it’s leg. she named it bitty and its now a fully healthy cat and pretty much takes it with her everywhere. and i mean literally everywhere. if you’re at the library the cat will be roaming around near her or on her lap.
has performed seances and used a ouija board in the forest no less. not really terrified of much of the folklore honestly has a lot of empathy for all the entities and thinks maybe they could use a friend.
lowkey wants to be possessed??? girl help???
she has a very deep connection to the ghosts that haunt grimrose, she claims she’s a little clairvoyant while that may or may not be true, i’m sure she’s invited plenty of ghosts and is probably haunted but like… who’s to say ya know

Dr. Mary Travelbest - Best of Thousand Oaks and First Time Solo Travelers
In this episode: .The FAQ is: How can I travel solo for the first time?
Today’s Destination Thousand Oaks California
Today’s Mistake- Too tired when you get home from a trip and can't find your parking ticket or keys
Travel Advice:   Safety After Dark
In this episode: FAQ How can I travel solo for the first time?
Answer: The first step for traveling solo for the first time is to pick a small destination such as one night in the next state. don't bite off too much because it might be too challenging and you want to be successful.  Plan a 1 Night trip to another town or state and return home the next day to see how you like it. prepare yourself with things to do by yourself, such as going to a movie, shopping, and sleeping well for the night when you wake up in the morning.  then drive home. You will have had your first successful solo trip, which was okay. The next step will be a little more challenging, but you will get there if you try and follow the directions I give you in my travel book, 5 steps to solo travel.
Destination:  Thousand Oaks, California
I took a solo trip to Malibu and Thousand Oaks, California, for a weekend.
There are about a hundred twenty-five thousand residents and 10,000 businesses here in Thousand Oaks, which has existed since the Chumash Indians founded it.
There's a lot to do in the coastal area of California north of Los Angeles. I recommend this kind of Step One travel for those who have never traveled by themselves. Gardens of the World is a destination to enjoy in Thousand Oaks, California.
Gardens of the World is open from Tuesday through Saturday only. it smells great With all these beautiful flowers, gardens, and fresh air here. The drive between Thousand Oaks and Malibu is beautiful. I hope you can take that tour across the top of the mountain, horse farms, wineries, and one-of-a-kind homes. .Windy roads, viewpoints, canyons,  spectacular vistas, and even some forest fire damage along the drive from past years fires.
The Lakes shopping Mall, City Hall, Plaza, and Park are nearby. Thousand Oaks is a small city. I really wanted to visit the Ojai Valley Inn, but they said I needed a reservation. I ended up at the America’s Best Value Inn.
Nearby beaches include Topanga, Dan Blocker, Point Dume, Niklas Canyon
I need to get back here my favorite beaches were El Matador Beach and Zuma Beach in Malibu,
Today’s Mistake: Too tired when you get home from a trip and can't find your parking ticket or keys.
When you return from a long overseas trip, you may be very tired. you may not be able to find your car parking tickets, keys, or both. This happened to my sister on her return from a long European getaway. The lesson learned is keeping your keys and parking ticket in a convenient and memorable location. Before you set on your trip home, have them handy so you will not have to remember where they are. That will save you much stress when you are jet-lagged and tired, and your brain just doesn't want to work.
Today’s Travel Advice:  Safety After Dark
If you are walking around after dark by yourself, do not use earbuds and listen to podcasts or music. Keep your ears, eyes, and all senses aware of your surroundings. Do not drink alcohol or take drugs. Do not walk in dark alleys. Know where you're going ahead of time please. I would like you to arrive safely at your destination.
Check out this Dr Travelbest episode!

The City of stars

Bill Proposed to Ban Skittles and Nerds
A California bill proposed by Rep. Jesse Gabriel would ban processed foods like Skittles and Nerds and other items containing chemicals linked to health problems like cancer and behavioral issues in children. The chemicals are often used to make processed foods last longer, taste better, and appear more appealing. These chemicals have already been banned in the European Union due to studies linking them to health risks, including increased cancer risk, behavioral issues in children, reproductive system harm, and immune system damage. Assemblymember Gabriel's efforts to remove toxic additives from California's food supply are commendable, as children are likely to eat more of these chemicals than adults. The chemicals would be banned by AB 418, which has not been independently evaluated or reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration. If passed, California would be the first state to ban such chemicals. The bill is expected to be heard in committee in the coming weeks. Read more.

Zuma Beach
If you're looking for a great spot to sunbathe in Malibu, then Zuma Beach is an excellent choice. It's a wide stretch of clean, sandy beach that's consistently ranked among the best in Southern California, and it's also a popular destination for surfers.
It's also an ideal place to watch the sunset, and if you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of whales in the winter months!
You'll find plenty of parking at the beach and there are lifeguards to keep you safe, as well as a number of food stands. There's also a boardwalk that runs the length of the beach and makes it an ideal location for romantic walks at sunset.
The sands of Zuma Beach are soft and smooth, and they're perfect for building sand castles or swimming in the warm ocean. There are a number of volleyball nets available, as well as beach games and activities for children.
There are a variety of water sports available at Zuma Beach, including surfing, bodyboarding, and swimming. You can even snorkel to see sand dollars, sea urchins, and kelp. You'll want to be aware of rip currents in the area, though.
If you're looking for a less crowded beach, try Dan Blocker Beach (known as Corral Beach by locals). It's a small, county-owned beach that doesn't get much traffic in the summer, so it's easy to enjoy a day at the shore without having to worry about other people.
You'll also want to check out El Matador Beach, which is one of the best beaches in Malibu to watch the sun set over the horizon. There are a number of rocks that create stunning contrasts between the crashing waves and the soft sands.
Another great beach to visit is Las Tunas Beach, which is a narrow, rocky beach that offers a scenic backdrop for beachwalkers in the eastern end of Malibu. This undeveloped stretch of beach is a popular fishing and scuba diving spot throughout the year, with a parking lot offered along Pacific Coast Highway.
Other beaches nearby include Point Dume, which is a secluded bluff with amazing views of the Santa Monica Bay and is a great spot for whale watching in the winter. The area is home to a number of hiking trails, as well as tide pools full of sea anemones, crabs, and mussels.
There's also a small Westward Beach located next to Zuma Beach, which is another good option for a casual day at the shore.
A few other notable beaches in the area include Topanga Beach, Leo Carrillo State Park, and Malibu Lagoon. Each of these beaches has its own special appeal, and each is a must-visit for anyone in the Los Angeles area who wants to enjoy a day on the beach.
There are many other hidden beaches in Malibu, too, and you should take the time to discover them. These beaches might not be as famous as their more famous neighbors, but they're still a beautiful place to spend a few hours with the family or take your significant other on a date.

@queencvbra {werewolf AU} gets a starter from Sam LaRusso { The Bonsai Badass }
The camping had been all her dad’s idea. As soon as mom heard the words ‘set up camp’ and ‘tent spikes’ she was out. Sam didn’t exactly blame her, she’d much prefer a cabin in El Capitan Canyon, something with hot running water and maybe even a television. But she and her father always found something meditative about the woods.
But Sam was only enough now to get her own tent, of course. So after a long day of hiking in Topanga State Park, doing some training, and attempting as close as you could get to shinrin-yoku forest bathing in Southern California, it was finally time for sleep. After s’mores and hot cocoa of course.
A few hours into a pretty quiet night, she woke with a grumble, regretting drinking so much cocoa before bed. Trying to maintain her tired status as much as possible, she shuffled blindly around the tent for a moment or two before finding a flashlight, her jacket, and some boots. The world was so quiet and blue at this hour of night, but she found her way to the camping facilities and back without issue- until she heard what sounded like several heavy footsteps and the snap of a twig.
“H-hello?”
Maybe it was just an animal... but the walking sounded like something on two legs. It was probably just another camper or hiker up for reasons all their own. Still, Sam shone the flashlight around the forest surrounding her, looking in a mix of curiosity and fear as she trundled back towards her tent, hoping she could fall back asleep pretty quickly.

All Eyes Are on the Skies over Topanga Canyon
Topanga Canyon, just outside Los Angeles, is the site of one of the most active UFO flaps in history. Huge objects have been reported gliding silently in the steep ravines, structured craft hover over isolated cabins and homes, and a rash of abductions have startled researchers. Strange, unearthly animals have been sighted. The Topanga Messenger even featured a story on a local family who had been harassed by a huge “ship” with bright lights.
I lived in Topanga Canyon for four years, right at the height of the UFO sightings. Often, while driving home from work at two a.m., I got an uneasy feeling that something was watching me and had plans to land in the road before pulling me out of the car. I put the jitters down to an overactive imagination from reading one too many UFO books, but upon arriving home, I always checked my watch to make sure there was no “missing time.”
Early one morning while driving Topanga Canyon Road in a thick fog with a friend, we saw a blinking yellow light that seemed to come from everywhere. It was so bright that we could see the outline of sagebrush crowning a hill ahead of us. We braced for our long-awaited encounter. As we rounded a corner, the glow became almost blinding. I slowed the car to a crawl until we saw the light coming from behind a tree near the road. We shielded our eyes and peeked out between our fingers at . . . a beer sign that had been left on at the local bar.
And the rest of the time I lived in the canyon, I didn’t see a thing. But plenty of other people did. Topanga became known as such a hot spot for saucer spotters that it began to resemble scenes from Close Encounters. Most of the sightings tended to cluster near the town center or the state park area just up the hill. Author and investigator Preston Dennett wrote a book on the period entitled, appropriately enough, UFOs Over Topanga Canyon, published in 1999. He described hundreds of sightings and closer encounters that began in June 1992 (barely two months after I moved out) and continued unabated for almost two years. One couple had so many visits over the period that they could just about predict when what appeared to be a craft would show up across the street from their home, hovering over a field of scrub brush. Strangely moving lights would dart around the canyon almost nightly. Dennett led a television crew out to the state park area one evening, accompanied by a group who claimed to be able to summon UFOs at will. They shined flashlights and even a laser beam heavenward and waited. Some in the group became excited and called attention to a slow-moving, amber light that appeared across the valley. The TV crew managed to get a few minutes of footage before the enigmatic object sank lazily out of sight below the ridgeline. Residents also reported military-type helicopters searching the area after UFO sightings.
Why would flying saucers take such an interest in Topanga Canyon? Dennett has his own theory: “I looked at other UFO hotspots, like Hudson Valley, New York, which is a rural area next to a large city. Like Topanga Canyon it’s isolated there: deep canyons, lots of wilderness . . . I think that UFOs use the area as a base. They hide there and study the population like hunters using a ‘blind,’ so that they can observe and be concealed by the local topography.”
Sometimes maybe, the inhabitants of the strange floating objects came out for a closer look around. In his book, Dennett reports the experience of Mimi Smith, who was driving in the area one night in November of 1994 when she stopped to watch what looked like a sheep crossing the road. “It was shaped like a sheep,” she said later, “and its head was around and placed lower on its body, and it appeared almost as if it had waggled on some kind of spring. . . . it moved like it glided along. As it looked at it, I saw that its eyes . . . were like holes with nothing there. You could see through. If you looked at the thing’s eyes, you could see the fence posts in back of it.” Smith saw the same unnerving specter a few months later in the same location.
Dennett says that sightings continue in the canyon, but don’t run out there with a lawn chair. The UFOs are not as predictable as they were in the early ‘90s. -GB

Corbin Canyon Park
Corbin Canyon Park in Woodland Hills, California, offers the perfect place to enjoy a nice walk and a bit of nature. Located within the Santa Monica Mountains, this area is a beautiful place to spend the day. It is home to native plants, a variety of wildflowers, and wildlife, such as quails, mule deer, wild mustard, and beetles.
The park is open year-round and has ample room for pets. Visitors can take a hike or bike on the many trails. During summer, it can get hot, so make sure to wear long sleeves and socks to prevent tick bites. You may also want to bring a water bottle and sunblock. If you are planning a longer trip, you can extend your walk by taking a side trip along the Winnetka Ridge Trail, which is nearby.
Corbin Canyon Park is located in Los Angeles County and is part of Topanga State Park. It is situated in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. This is a great location for spring and fall hiking. The trails are easy to follow, but they require some elevation gain. For the most part, they are flat, making them a good choice for novice hikers.
The main trailhead is located in the southern part of Woodland Hills. Parking is available both sides of the street. However, you will need to use US-101 to access the trailhead. Once you arrive, you can drive down to the trailhead and start your hike.
The trailhead is near the intersection of Tampa Avenue and Corbin Avenue. It is three quarters of a mile from the Santa Monica Mountains. Alternatively, you can start your hike at the trailhead at the end of Corbin Avenue. Depending on where you are starting from, you may choose to start your hike from the trailhead on the east side of the canyon or the west side.
The Corbin Canyon Park trail has a few sections that are unmarked, and the trails aren't well-maintained. While this makes it challenging to stay on course, it does offer plenty of scenery and diverse vegetation. There are two options for a loop, which are about 2.05 miles long. One route starts at the end of Corbin Avenue and ends at the trailhead on the west side of the canyon.
In addition to hiking, visitors can also enjoy a stroll through the botanical garden. This area is dotted with many trees and bushes, and the main attraction is the "Evolution Walk" featuring a path that leads to a small hill that is covered with a mother of pearl plant.
Another option for hiking is the Hidden Valley Trail. It is located in a 328-acre valley and is ideal for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It has a large expanse of prairie-like grasslands in the beginning, but it gradually turns into a lush, chaparral-covered desert terrain in the higher elevations.
Although the Hidden Valley Trail doesn't offer much in the way of amenities, it is a beautiful way to explore the topography of the area. If you're looking for a more challenging hike, you can also try the Corbin Canyon Trail, which has approximately 150 feet of elevation gain.
