Chapter 30: Star Death Reality Show (XIII)
"This place between the back of the head and the neck is very dangerous, it's easy for you to cause a brain hernia and kill the person. Qi Leren looked helpless: "It was all forced out."
"Qianbei is very fierce, almost too much! So handsome!" Du Yue, the fanboy, wore the awestruck expression of a hopeless fan and looked at Qi Leren with stars in his eyes. "Can qianbei teach me? I also want to learn!"
"Well, let’s wait... let’s wait until the show is over," Qi Leren said. "Hurry up and find out if there’s anything important in this basement. Hurry up, Mark may come back soon."
The three men were busy again, especially Dr. Lu, who, like a hamster whose hidden melon seeds had been lost after the sawdust was changed, searched anxiously. He plunked his ass on the ground and looked into the gap under the bookcase, and pulled Du Yue to help when he was met with heavy objects that couldn’t be moved.
Qi Leren looked around the basement. It wasn’t like a private laboratory, but rather a utility room, with cabinets and bookcases everywhere and some metal barrels and strewn about tools in the corner. Qi Leren even saw homemade explosives… This former owner was good at playing around.
Since there were explosives, it wasn’t strange that there had been an explosion here, and the scope of the explosion wasn’t small, which had left the basement a mess, with huge blocks of stones around the collapsed passageway. Although it could be seen that someone had cleaned this passage that led to an unknown location, they still can't do anything about the heavy stones.
Had anyone entered this passage? Had He Yi entered the passage, or were He Yi and Mark both in it?
Considering that the audience voted to prove that Mark had knocked out Xue Jiahui, it seemed that Mark probably hadn’t entered it. With such a thought, the situation at that time was that Mark had tried to go against He Yi. He Yi discovered the passage in the attic, entered the basement, and discovered the explosives. "You can give it a try. Come on, let's go back to Jing Siyu’s house" Qi Leren was also excited.
The three people left Annie knocked out, quickly left the building, and headed for the temporarily unoccupied house of Jing Siyu.

He was worried that there would be some accidents that would make him have to use his skill cards. Although doing so would arouse the suspicion of the audience, it was better than direct exposure.
"I'll go in first and see. Wait here. I'll call you when I get to the other end," Qi Leren said cautiously.
"Be careful, if you’re injured, come back quickly. I’ll curse you to death if you don’t!" Dr. Lu said.
"Qianbei, you can do it! You’re the best!" Du Yue clenched his fists.
Qi Leren felt a little tired. Why were all his little friends so funny? Couldn’t he get better ones?
In the deep and otherworldly green light, Qi Leren took the first step. His footsteps were as light as a prowling cat, and he didn't make a sound. This disturbing color touched his nerves and made him feel that he was in constant danger.
One step, two steps... Qi Leren moved forward, and the uncertainty of stepping on a censor haunted Qi Leren at every moment, making him more alert. He believed in his intuition. He knew he could even accurately sense the threat of flying knives when he was blindfolded, as Chen Baiqi had already confirmed.
And this passage was not safe.
Just when he was thinking about it, his hunch came true!

He could only see the glimmer of hope if he tried his best and gave it a go.
He didn't want to die here, no matter what. He still had too many words to say to Ning Zhou, to tell him of the love he had never dared to express and to let the words hidden in his heart overflow. Even if he died, he couldn't close his eyes peacefully.
He couldn’t let Ning Zhou be sad.
The file was read for the third time and final time.
Qi Leren cleared his brain and drove away all his distractions. His body forgot its exhaustion and weakness in the moment that he finished reading the file. His eyes looked directly at the gate leading to heaven ahead, and he rushed there like lightning.
He didn't think about whether it could be done or the consequences of failure. There was a firm belief that made his soul burn at this moment. Willpower poured energy beyond his limits into his limbs. He was as fast as a meteor. In this dark tunnel, the wind sprinted and rushed to the exit!
The first laser beam lit up, and in the next second, more laser lines would be woven into an impassable net at this position, and anyone who tried to cross this barrier would be cut into pieces. The second laser line lit up, but Qi Leren had already rushed to it, jumped up in this extreme sprint, and jumped between the two laser beams. The world was as silent as when he jumped from the boat and his head became submerged beneath the water.
In the moment when he fell heavily to the ground, the alarm came to an abrupt end. Qi Leren didn't realize that he had passed through the corridor. He pushed up from the ground, rolling and crawling, and looked behind him in a panic. The newly formed laser grid sensed that there was no intruder in the corridor and was automatically dissipated and he, who had already pulled off his seat belt, had escaped this nearly inescapable danger.

Animal Crossing Tips!
@therealjacksepticeye I am a true veteran of animal crossing... been playing since I was 7 years old. I figured I could share some tips! (Even though I haven’t played New Horizons, there are some general tips that seem universal) These can be used by anyone new and even if you’re experienced... maybe you’ll learn something new!
So, whenever you get anything new on the island, a fish, a bug, or a fossil, save it and immediately give it to the museum. This will allow you to see each new thing that you have caught and will fill up the museum!
When you’re fishing, don’t run near the water. You’ll scare the fish away! There are sharks in animal crossing, but they’re quite tricky to catch. I imagine you’ll need something better than a flimsy rod. You can tell which ones are sharks because they have a fin sticking out of the water. Sometimes when you fish, trash comes up, so it’s not always a fish.
Trees are quite fun. They have fruit and other things hidden as well. I know in old versions of animal crossing, sometimes furniture would drop out of the trees. The bees are scary but if you outrun them and get into a house fast enough, the risk is well worth it! You can get bell drops and peaches which are a good source of income. Since I know you were already the victim of a bee attack, you can buy medicine to get your eyes back to normal. (As of writing this, you just figured this out :p) Bees come out of beehives that, after you’re done being attacked, are quite profitable.
To clear up some things on the characters, the nook twins talk like that because they are both very excited and while one is talking the other one repeats what they’re saying with enthusiasm. As for the “cheeks” thing, all of the animals will have a nickname for you and sometimes they’ll ask you for one or if you want them to change the nickname they already gave you. Talk to the characters regularly. Sometimes you can catch them talking to each other and hear some interesting conversations. They will give you all of the gossip and even send you on missions.
One annoying thing about Animal Crossing is the time thing. I know when I was small I would want to play animal crossing when I was on the bus, but nothing was open because it was so early in the morning. Same thing for late at night. The only thing you can do for that is to change the time on your switch. Another annoying thing with time is that a lot of times things in the stores don’t restock or change until the next day, so you actually have to wait.
Now I’ll talk about some of the tools!
Shovel: shovels are very useful. There are little stars on the ground that mean something is buried. This can mean that there is either a fossil (which you should take to the museum), a pitfall seed that will make you get stuck in a hole until you click a button a few times (a mild annoyance, but fun for pranks when you’re playing with friends.), or there could be a gyroid (little dancing robot things that a lot of people like to collect, and in some old versions could be given to K.K.), there could also be some furniture, though that happens less often. Shovels can also be used to hit rocks. Rocks have been known in older versions to spit out money and crystals. I imagine that this is what Timmy was talking about with the peaches.
Nets: Nets do what you’d expect. They help you catch bugs. Bugs mostly come out at night and the most rare ones come out at dusk. There are also butterflies during the day, and they’re very pretty. (Remember, bring everything new to Blathers (the museum)!).
Fishing rod: Similar to the net, it’s pretty obvious it catches fish. Same thing with the bugs, the most rare fish come out during dusk and dawn.
Axe: It chops down trees, but I warn that it shouldn’t be done often. You’ll get less peaches if you chop down too many trees!
Watering Can: The watering can can be used for growing flowers from seeds that you can be gifted you you buy. I know that there used to be some mechanics that allowed for cross pollination and some interesting types of flowers!
Slingshot: Yes... There is a sling shot. The present you saw floating on a balloon happens when the time on the system ends with the number 4, so like 12:54 etc. They can have some money or some furniture. (Any furniture you don’t like can be sold, btw).
Some tools are more powerful than others, as you have already experienced with “flimsy fishing rod”.
There are a group of people that come later called the Able Sisters. Normally I wouldn’t say anything because you haven’t seen them yet, but I think it’s really important to talk to Sable regularly... it’ll be worth it. (You’ll see what I mean).
Obviously you don’t have to take all or even any of my advice, but I thought I’d offer it. There are a lot of things I haven’t said (which is hard to believe seeing how much I wrote), but it’s true. I can’t wait to see more!

Diary of a Junebug
A magically spooky adventure in the woods
Pippa and Mariposa are back at the camp for a magical adventure! Angie and Willow are with us as well, making it the first of hopefully many fun camping trips for Team Magic. Hopefully next time Luna and Skully - and maybe even Cassie, in an unexpected turn of events.
After having a great time during her first gyroid adventure, Pippa wanted to design her own gyroid themed furniture so she and Daisy Jane have been working on that for the past few months. Then Mariposa got involved with planning the event and it went from a fun scavenger hunt in the campsite to an all out adventure in the Moonlit Woods! So along with collecting gyroids we're also collecting trinkets and herbs for Luna and Skully since the woods are full of them during this time of year.
It's also a good excuse to explore this area since we rarely go out this far. Tom Nook warned us that the Moonlit Woods can be tricky to navigate, which is why I've been kinda avoiding that spot. There's still a lot of places outside the camp we have yet to explore and now that I've gotten familiar with the camping grounds after three years of living here, it's time to venture into the unknown.
I'm glad that Pippa's enjoying the camp. Since she and Almie first made the trip here Almie had been saying that being out here has lifted up her spirits a lot. Visiting the camp, training with Luna, and becoming friends with Mariposa, Angie, and Willow has helped her come out of her shell a lot. Things have been looking bright for her - she's doing well in school, her latest blood work is promising, and she's learning more and more about her magic every day.
Mariposa's the one who brought Team Magic together. Pippa and Angie were sort of loners, Willow part of the popular crowd, and Mariposa's the new kid in town. In the short time she's been in Rosevine, Mariposa has shaken things up for Luna and the gang in ways they never expected. She and Pippa haven't known each other for long but it seems like they've been friends forever!
A lot has happened since I last saw them at Emmaline and Minnie's wedding. Luna and Cassie have reached a truce so now they're trying to reconcile. The gyroid event happened to be perfect timing as Mariposa and the others felt it was best to give the sisters some space and privacy. No one really knows how they feel about Cassie but they're willing to hear her out, especially since she willingly threw away everything she worked hard to help Luna, Skully, and Mariposa. Cassie always struck me as someone who wants to bring out the best in others but at the same time won't hesitate to walk all over them to get ahead.
Angie's been coming out of her shell too. Now she's been doing some training with Luna and her magic has tremendously improved. She and Pippa were the kind of friends who mainly stuck together because they didn't fit in anywhere else. It's not that they didn't get along but they were just kinda shoved to the side and ignored by everyone else. Then Mariposa came along and they became notorious for getting caught up in magical shenanigans. It's good to see her perform spells with confidence!
Willow was an unexpected surprise. She comes from a powerful family so she and her siblings carry the weight of their family name. Before Mariposa came along Willow wasn't exactly friendly towards Pippa and Angie. She didn't antagonize them like some of her friends did but more like gave them the cold shoulder and walked all over them for her own personal gain. Turns out that she and Mariposa started off on the wrong note because Willow felt threatened by her. But after a few more missteps Willow grew to like her, and in turn she made amends with Angie and Pippa.
If the timing of the gyroid event wasn't already good, the fact that Willow's parents are out of town is even better. If her parents were home, they probably wouldn't let her come out here. Good thing Emmy and Eddie aren't strict, plus they like Mariposa so they're more than happy to let their baby sister go out on a week long camping trip, even if she has to hobble around in crutches.
Although she can't go climbing and running around, Willow didn't miss out too much on the fun. Not too long after the wedding shenanigans happened and Willow managed to save the day but took a nasty fall in the process. Basically, she landed in a way that not only badly broke her leg but also messed up her back a bit as well. So for a couple weeks she had to use a wheelchair until her legs felt normal again and since last week she's only needed crutches to get around.
We arrived at the woods around 9 so we can make the most out of the day. The thing with these gyroids is that they're easy to miss, especially in a place like the Moonlit Woods. Rare gyroids are always in places that are either difficult to navigate or hard to get to, which is why they're rare. I've rarely come across gyroids that can glow and I've never seen gyroids that can turn transparent like a ghost. It seems fitting for something like that to only be found in a place like the Moonlit Woods.
What I've learned about the woods is that you can't let it outsmart you. Another reason why the stars have aligned for this event is because of Team Magic. Whatever challenges the woods throws at us, the girls always find a way.
Angie's the expert at herbal magic, no cluster of overgrown weeds and thorns is too difficult for her to untangle. Like I said, she's really improved with her magic, especially since discovering not too long ago that she has an innate connection with plants. I can also see that Mariposa has been taking Luna's training to heart, connecting with nature and conjuring spells with the elements. Pippa's magic is different from Willow and Angie's because she's not a witch like they are, but like Mariposa she's found ways to apply Luna's guidance with what works for her. The three of them make a great team!
While searching for treasures, we came across a bunch of signs scattered throughout the woods. We got curious so Mariposa and Pippa decided to try and translate the symbols. The codes turned out to be clues left behind by someone who embarked on a quest to find the ultra rare cocostar tree. Of course, we had to go out and find the tree too because none of us can resist a quest!
According to an old journal left in a log by the explorer, the cocostar tree is a valuable resource. The bark can be used for tea and potions, the tea is believed to relax those in distress and extreme emotional turmoil as well as stomach troubles in general. The fruit of the tree is edible, the taste described as sweet with a browned caramel flavor, good to pair with sweet and savory foods. The leaves are also edible and is said to have a distinct, bittersweet flavor that's good for cooking and making tea.
What puts many off from exploring the woods is how unpredictable it is to navigate. Retracing your steps would drive you crazy because the paths always change. A lot of things about the woods don't make much sense so we just have to accept that. In this case, it makes the adventure a lot more fun!
So while collecting gyroids, we stocked up on berries. Mariposa carved light glyphs in the dirt so we can see where we're going. Angie was able to communicate with the plants and use them as a guide. Willow used her crutches to test out some areas that looked like they might be full of pitfall seeds, saving us a lot of trouble in the process. Pippa researched the codes and puzzles scattered throughout the woods.
By putting our heads together, we managed to find the elusive cocostar tree! Mariposa was the first to spot the tree, a happy accident as she misfired a light orb while we were fighting off vines that ambushed us in the dark. The explorer was right, the tree is massive! The fruit is unlike anything I've ever seen before - it looks more like a fancy dessert than something that grew from a tree. Because the tree's so big, there's more than enough fruit for us to experiment with and for the girls to take back to Rosevine. It took a lot of work, but we did it!
Getting out of the Moonlit Woods was an adventure itself. Since we didn't expect to go on a cocostar tree quest, I wasn't sure how we were gonna lug all this stuff out. Of course, Team Magic found a way to carry the extra stuff that can't fit into backpacks. We'll be back in a couple days to retrieve more gyroids and maybe go on another quest if we stumble across something.
As soon as we got back to the camp, we got to work crafting gyroid stuff and trying out the cocostars. Pippa and Daisy Jane really outdid themselves with the gyroid designs and now the others want to help plan future events. Looks like the camp's all set for gyroid events in the next few months. I can't wait to see what kind of designs the others will come up with!
After spending all day in the woods, it's nice to hang out at the campsite and relax. Since Angie and Willow didn't really get to explore the hangout spots today, that's what we're gonna do tomorrow.

Eyes wide, alert, totally aware of everything, everyone, all that goes on around you. Miss nothing, nothing missed; your eyes, your intuition, your senses and abilities are in tune with the world. To get passed you is next to impossible, to trick, deceive, to manipulate for gain isn’t even an option. Those who wish to try are in for a rude awakening, just keep walking deception; there’s nothing to see over here… You’ve got your eye on me, I’ve got my eyes on you.
Asleep…
Eyes wide shut, can’t see a thing. Closed to an environment, blinking yet still can’t see a thing. Right in front of you, are you freaking blind? What was that, did something or someone just pass me by? Claim to watch out, yet everything gets beyond your field of view. Stand there, try to stay focused, don’t miss it, I see it, really I do. Perhaps glasses will help, maybe contacts, blink again, one two three; whoops didn’t see it as it passed you by again.
Adaze…
Watery, blurry, can’t seem to focus. Eyes not all there. You see some but not all, blinking clears the veil for a moment, but the dull crusty film comes back with a vengeance. Claim to notice, be aware, on your toes. Sometimes it’s true, while others, didn’t you catch that; it’s right in front of your noise. Can’t catch em all, the eyes can be tricked, move to fast or even to slow; leaving you questioning your visual senses.

Deeds That Beckon
This sermon was drastically revised from a previous version to fold in a discussion about how individualism and paternalism -- two hallmarks of white supremacy culture -- affect the way we understand our religious history. We must unpack that history in order to repair the damage that is our heritage and claim the positive mission of justice and kindness that is also our heritage. Delivered to the UU Church of Silver Spring, November 25, 2018, by the Rev. Lyn Cox.
As Unitarian Universalists, we need stories that help us, on an emotional and metaphorical level, understand who we are and how to live in the world. Our history provides those myths. Stories about admirable Unitarian Universalists are grown from seeds of historical accuracy, yet they are family stories. When we study our prophetic ancestors and take up the path of service in our own generation, we are becoming part of that mythic story.
The seminary I attended invited us into one such story. My school was named after Thomas Starr King, a minister who served both Universalist and Unitarian congregations in the 1840s through the 1860s. He got a lot done. Thomas Starr King was about five feet tall. One of his famous quotes is, “though I weigh only 120 pounds, when I am mad I weigh a ton.”
As a nature writer, he persuaded people of the importance of preserving places like the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Yosemite Valley in the West. His accounts were published in the Boston Evening Transcript. He has two mountains named after him, one in New Hampshire and one in California’s Sierra Nevada.
He helped the Unitarian church in San Francisco grow into their mission as a vital congregation involved in the life of the city. Starr King was a vocal abolitionist. When the Civil War broke out, he traveled up and down California, speaking to everyone from miners to legislators about joining the Union instead of the Confederacy or trying to become a separate country.
When I lived in California and walked the hills of San Francisco, sometimes I would think, “If Thomas Starr King could hike up the mountains, I can, too.” Visiting Yosemite, I could see his point about the landscape being the scenic equivalent of Beethoven’s ninth symphony. Acts of service are like moveable temples, places where we can go to greet the spirits of our beloved ancestors, both blood ancestors and chosen ancestors.
Individualism and White Supremacy Culture
The story of Thomas Starr King can function as a UU religious story, bringing connection and inspiration, and a way to enter the story through acts of service. Even so, it’s worthwhile to go back and take another look at the stories that are important to us through the lens of white supremacy culture.
White supremacy culture is a system of oppression that uses everything from social norms to cultural narratives to corporate policy to federal law to maintain the privilege of one group over all other groups. White supremacy functions even in the absence of people who self-identify as racists. By design, the power and operating rules of white supremacy are unnoticed by most of the people who benefit from it.
Even when we have a story about someone like Thomas Starr King, who dedicated his life to causes like ecological preservation and abolition of slavery, we have to ask ourselves about what ways the form of the story we are telling upholds white supremacy culture. Sometimes oppression is baked in from the beginning, with our admired ancestors working against justice in certain facets while making progress in other facets. Sometimes the white supremacy culture is in our retelling, in the details we emphasize or the details we forget.
Tema Okun from the organization dRworks has published a guide to recognizing fifteen characteristics of white supremacy culture. Okun focuses on the unspoken norms that maintain the status quo, even in organizations devoted to justice. One of the characteristics of white supremacy culture that Okun describes is individualism. Organizations that are under the influence of individualism have difficulties with working in teams. Individuals believe they are responsible for solving the problems of the organization alone. There is an emphasis on individual recognition and credit, leading to isolation and competition. Few resources are devoted to developing skills in how to cooperate.
The way we UU’s typically tell the story of Thomas Starr King is steeped in individualism. He did do important things, but a lot of his impact was through organizing and teamwork, and those are the strategies that are hard to replicate based on the mythology that we carry on in his memory. He didn’t just go around preaching on street corners, he traveled to speak with and work with coherent groups of people from different social classes and walks of life. He made a difference because of the way he was able to get outside his comfort zone and work with teams, not by his preaching skills alone.
The way history is taught and discussed in general is susceptible to this pitfall, and the way we talk about Unitarian Universalist history in particular is vulnerable to individualism. Sometimes our quick introductions focus on famous Unitarian Universalists, trying to make our religious movement more familiar by reminding people of its famous adherents.
One of the most famous UU’s is Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote an essay called “Self-Reliance” in 1841. In his memory, I worry that Unitarian Universalism has taken individualism to a place that limits our mutual accountability and our responsibilities to the most vulnerable among us. I appreciate Emerson’s healthy skepticism toward the way things have always been done. Emerson’s suggestion that sometimes social expectations are not the most important value is important for our anti-racism work, because you have to push back on politeness at least a little bit if you are challenging white supremacy. And. It is important not to let our admiration for Emerson’s “Self-Reliance” prevent us from being in covenant with each other, being loving in our truth-telling, and opening ourselves up to learning new ways of cooperation.
Contrast the image of Emerson as a poet who stands apart, an individualist hero, with what we know about another writer, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Harper was born into a family of free Black educators in Baltimore in 1825. She joined the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia in 1870, and also maintained her membership in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Like Emerson, Williams wrote poems, essays, and lectures. She also wrote short stories and novels. Like Emerson, she wrote about personal development and used her writing to promote social causes. Unlike Emerson, Harper also wrote about responsibility to the community, and she practiced it in concrete ways. In her 1855 article, “A Factor in Human Progress,” she spoke of “the science of a true life of joy and trust in God, of God-like forgiveness and divine self-surrender.” Harper worked in her community feeding the poor and mentoring youth. She was part of several groups who moved toward progress together, for women’s suffrage and for Black suffrage, against lynching, for peace. We learn from her legacy that a writer can be a literary voice and also be a leader who encourages cooperation, solidarity, and true relationship with the people who are most impacted by oppression.
Individualism has its good points, yet there is more to Unitarian Universalist history and more to our current character and potential than we can access through that doorway alone. Hyper-individualism maintains white supremacy culture when it prevents us from getting outside ourselves and building relationships with interfaith partner and community partner organizations. Hyper-individualism privileges the lone dissenter to the point where it is hard to put personal preferences aside so that congregations can work one one thing together. Hyper-individualism leads us to celebrate only the heroic faces of social justice, forgetting to gather in those who are called to work behind the scenes. There is a place in this congregation, this faith, and in the movement for people with many different talents and ways of being. As we study the past, may we celebrate the groups and movements as well as the superstars, knowing that progress is a team effort.
Deeds That Beckon Us To Be Transformed
In addition to individualism, another characteristic of white supremacy culture we can explore in our UU history is paternalism. Paternalism is a cultural norm in which “those with power think they are capable of making decisions for and in the interests of those without power” (Okun). This characteristic is tricky, because paternalism can feel like compassion, yet there are times when paternalism got in the way of true progress. Impact is more important than intention.
If we want a positive example of accountable, grounded, not-paternalistic leadership in our UU history, consider Fannie Barrier Williams. She was an organizer, lecturer, journalist, artist, and musician. She was born in 1855 to one of the few Black families in Brockport, New York. She is most famous for her work in Chicago, where she belonged to All Souls Unitarian Church. Williams made strides in integration through the establishment of the Provident Hospital, joining the Chicago Woman’s Club, and serving on the Board of the Chicago Public Library. She also worked within the African American community. She helped start the National Association of Colored Women, which, through their 200 local clubs, provided child care centers, classes, employment bureaus, and savings banks. There are models among our UU ancestors that disrupt paternalism, if we seek them out.
The compassion that gets mixed up with paternalism might be a good impulse that gets misdirected. So let’s start with what’s good. Being true to compassion means meeting challenges and growing from them, allowing our minds and hearts to be transformed.
Dorothea Dix found that out when she entered the East Cambridge Jail as a teacher in 1841. Dix was horrified by what she saw. The jail was unheated. All of the residents were housed together: people who had been convicted of crimes, people with mental illness, children with developmental disabilities, all mixed together in unfurnished, unsanitary quarters. The only thing the residents had in common was that society had given up on them.
Using her contacts in Boston, Dix got a court order for heat and other improvements at the jail. She then set about a systemic investigation of jails and almshouses in Massachusetts, making personal visits to document conditions. She said, “what I assert in fact, I must see for myself.” She read about mental illness and treatment and interviewed physicians. She gave her data to a politically connected friend who presented her findings to the Massachusetts legislature. After some attempts at denial and misdirection, funding came through to modernize the State Mental Hospital at Worcester. Dix followed the same pattern in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Hospitals sprung up in her wake.
OK, so all of that is great; however, in our continuing efforts at health care reform and mental health care and accessibility, we would need to do things differently today. Dorothea Dix did try to understand the experience of the people who were most impacted by incarceration, but she did not hold that all people have equal inherent worth. For instance, she did not think that slavery was wrong, she thought that white people were actually superior to Black people. She also harbored prejudice against Roman Catholics, and she regarded people with mental illness as helpless. Compassion is good. Deciding that you and people like you have to take leadership in compassionate change because you are better than the people you want to help is problematic.
Today, trying to undo the legacy of paternalism, we are called support the leadership and voices of the people who are most impacted. We can work with coalitions led by people who are formerly incarcerated and their families. We can support organizations like ADAPT, led by people with disabilities; the organization is even now fighting for the right of people with disabilities to live in the community rather than in institutions. The legacy of paternalism gives a heroic glow to our ancestors who struggled for others, but it is time for us to learn new skills of struggling alongside neighboring communities, learning how to accept the leadership of people who know the most about the issues they are facing.
The path of service spurs us to many kinds of transformation. We meet challenges and build skills we didn’t have before. We gain awareness of a timeless spiritual truth, which is our oneness. Reflecting on history and our own experience, taking in the lessons of dismantling individualism and paternalism, the transformation that compassion brings becomes a spiritual as well as an ethical reality.

Collective kindness is a tradition worth growing. Role models from UU history and from our own congregation help us to place ourselves on a path with a past, yet a path where we have a choice going into the future. The practice of compassion is a tradition we receive, nurture, and share with the next generation. May we find our place in the mythic story of UUism. May we be transformed. Plastic: Next to the burning of fossil fuels, it represents one of the greatest environmental threats facing the planet.
Researchers estimate that since 1950, more than 8.3 billion metric tons of the stuff has been produced, more than one ton for every person currently on the planet. Once used, much of it is burned. The rest winds up in landfills or in the ocean, where it can take up to five centuries to fully decompose. In the meantime, it poses a threat to wildlife and, through potentially carcinogenic microplastics that enter the food chain, us too.
London-based startup FabricNano is targeting this scourge with a new kind of manufacturing that harnesses the chemical laboratories that exist inside the cells of living organisms, but does so without the need to actually use living things. Its first product is a precursor for the creation of biodegradable polyester, which FabricNano’s founders think they can produce at a price that will make it competitive with the petroleum-based plastics that are used in everything from water bottles to fast-food trays.
Among those inspired by that vision are actress Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, and Alexander Moscho, the former chief executive of Bayer. They are part of a $12.5 million investment round in FabricNano, led by London-based venture capital firm Atomico, announced today.
Harvesting the power of single-cell organisms is one of humankind’s oldest manufacturing techniques: Think of beer, wine, cheese and bread. Traditional biomanufacturing uses microbes, such as yeast, that either naturally produce a chemical or, more recently, that have been genetically modified to do so.
But there are several potential problems: Growing single-cell organisms in large vats can be difficult. The amount of chemical produced, known as the yield, can be inconsistent, especially because the cells at the bottom of the vats often respond poorly to the pressure and heat created. Evenly distributing food for the cells can be a problem. For many chemical processes, cells are also relatively inefficient, partly because the cells need to consume energy to live.
This tends to make biomanufacturing expensive compared to other chemical processes, so it is most often used for specialty chemicals and materials. Think pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, carpeting, and molded parts in automobiles. Biomanufacturing also doesn't work for certain chemicals because the chain reactions needed to create them produce toxins that kill the cells before the process can be completed.
FabricNano is one of just a handful of companies working to commercialize a technology that sidesteps many of these pitfalls, known as “cell-free biomanufacturing.” Other companies also working in the area include San Diego startup Debut Biotech, which has a partnership with Dutch materials company DSM; Daicel Arbor Biosciences in Ann Arbor, Mich., which is mostly focused on uses of the technology in life science;, and French biotech company Synthelis.
In FabricNano’s case, it has pioneered a wafer-like substance made of DNA suspended in liquid that forms a kind of platform on which various enzymes and proteins can produce the same chemical reactions as would occur inside a cell, but without the need for an actual living organism. Because there are no living cells, the chemical reactions are more efficient, can be used in large vats without worrying about inconsistent yields, and can produce chemicals that would prove toxic to cells.
"Cell-free is the technology that I'd wish we'd had ten years ago when I was trying to source biodegradable materials for Unilever," says Mike Butler, who served as a research and development director at the consumer products giant specifically working on sustainability and advanced materials from 2008 to 2018. At the time, Butler says, only cell-based biomanufacturing processes were available. But they were "too tricky to optimize," because of the difficulty of "keeping all the little bugs happy," he says, referring to the microbes.
While Butler says "there is some really great stuff out there" in terms of biodegradable plastics, they tend to be between three and five times more expensive than conventional petroleum-based plastics. As a result, Unilever and other companies have largely built their sustainability strategies around the use of recycled plastic rather than biodegradable or compostable materials. New technologies could alter that equation, he says. (Now the technical director at U.K. specialty chemicals company William Blythe Ltd., Butler has consulted with FabricNano on how to commercialize its technology.)
FabricNano's DNA-based wafer is critical, says John Woodley, a chemical engineering professor at the Technical University of Denmark who serves as a scientific advisor to FabricNano. “It holds the enzymes together and positions them the right way, so they are very close to each other,” he says. This makes the chemical reactions controllable and efficient.
Siraj Khaliq, a partner at Atomico who led the financing round and will be joining FabricNano’s board, says the venture capital firm found the modular nature of FabricNano’s DNA wafer technology was compelling. “There are all kinds of benefits that come from controlling and being able to build with biology as you would with hardware,” he tells Fortune.
FabricNano’s system makes it cheaper to manufacture some chemicals, such as one called 1,3 propanediol. Currently, 1,3 propanediol can be biomanufactured and turned into biodegradable plastic, but not at a price that is competitive with the petroleum-based single-use plastics. “Why is Coke not shifting to bio-based plastics? Because it’s too expensive and the market is too price sensitive,” says Grant Aarons, FabricNano’s co-founder and chief executive.
For instance, DuPont produces a biodegradable nylon, called Biomax PTT, that is made from biomanufactured 1,3 propanediol. But it costs about $3 per kilogram, whereas petroleum-based plastics cost just $1 per kilogram, Aarons says. (Fortune wrote about a similar biomanufactured product from Cargill Dow in 2003.)
Woodley says that FabricNano’s cell-free process could close this gap. “1,3 propanediol is a well-established chemical product, but it is expensive and, basically, it is too slow to biomanufacture,” he says. “There is an opportunity to drive this much faster and bring the price down.”
FabricNano can convert sugars that are used as feed stock for the chemical reaction to the plastic end product with nearly 100% efficiency, compared to about 40% efficiency inside living cells, Aarons says. What’s more, because the company isn't using living cells, the sugars it uses don’t have to be particularly pure. FabricNano can use waste glycerin that is a byproduct of biodiesel production, and is often simply burned by biodiesel producers because there’s currently no market for it, to power its process.
