That forest knowledge and mountain faith persist at all is astonishing. The waning of the nineteenth century brought colonialists, Christianity, and theft to Kenya. Immense tracts of land were occupied by British settlers, leaving less space for a growing population, while colonial restrictions on the freedoms to move and work stunted livelihoods and fired resentment. Resistance took the shape of the Mau Mau uprising that began in 1952—when Thureinira was in his late twenties and Mbaya not yet born—and drew its members mostly from the Kikuyu people. The forests of Mount Kenya and the nearby Aberdares became the Mau Mau fighters’ fastness, from where they launched deadly guerrilla attacks by night against white settlers and Kenyan supporters of the regime. British colonial authorities responded to the Mau Mau’s vicious but small-scale attacks with aerial bombing raids, mass roundups, torture, and internment in prison camps instigated by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Though Churchill led British troops against the Nazi regime, the camps built in Kenya under his administration uncomfortably echoed the concentration camps of World War II: they have been described as akin to a “gulag” by historians, and at least one camp gloried in the Auschwitz-like slogan “Labour and Freedom.”
Despite their battles and their sacrifices, Kenya’s independence was not won by the Mau Mau, but by a new political elite which, rather than dismantle the colonial system, appropriated it. Land was not returned to the Kenyan people but taken over by Kenyan leaders; the annexation and theft continued, and the oppression meted out by colonial authorities persisted under the new security forces no longer in the service of racism but elitism, directing violence against the poor and marginalized. The new rulers had no more interest in unearthing or respecting traditional belief systems than their colonial predecessors. As old ways of knowing continued to fade and the world became more crowded, the mountain’s forests were transformed into just another resource to exploit: wildlife was hunted and trees were cut down for firewood, charcoal, timber, or to make way for homesteads, agriculture, and country estates.

National Geographic: Locust Plague Hits East Africa
I came across an interesting article posted by National Geographic yesterday entitled “A locust plague hit East Africa. The pesticide solution may have dire consequences” and was quite intrigued. This article was posted on March 24, 2021 by Tristan McConnell and explains the current situation on pesticide use in East Africa.
Tumblr media
The article explains that since late 2019, a ridiculous number of locusts have been swarming several countries in East Africa, eating tons of crops and pastureland.  With resources scarce, major steps have been taken in order to eliminate the insects. According to McConnell “a ground and air spraying campaign over eight East African countries, coordinated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, has staved off the worst” (McConnell, 2021). While food stocks have been protected in order to feed millions, the potential effects of these pesticides could be quite devastating. McConnell also stresses that over half a million gallons of chemicals have been dumped, with no signs of slowing down. In my opinion the most interesting part of this article is how the author had expressed his feelings on a seemingly nonexistent environmental assessment plan. Further explaining the lack of research surrounding these chemicals in this particular location.
This article certainly provides an abundance of information on this topic, but is the article trustworthy?  While National Geographic is one of the most popular magazines out today, there can certainly be some bias within the articles. Firstly, it is important to note that no sources have been listed in the article itself, but the author has made several references to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Thus, this article would be considered more of an opinion piece, with the guided help of one decent source. Personally, I would have performed more research on the chemical being used in particular, diving into those scholarly journals to provide a few more solid sources to the case. As we have discussed several times throughout the semester, it is essential to back up all point through multiple scholarly sources to avoid bias.
Honestly, the subject matter of this article was very interesting, but does contain quite a bit of noise. It provides a background on the subject but lacks strong evidence. I would use this article as a steppingstone and perform more research in order to develop my own opinions. After reading the entire article, I do believe environmental impact assessments should be carried out on matters like this regardless.
Do you think the authors style of presenting the information should have been more scholarly, or is this just an example of a Geography magazine attempting to raise awareness?

Ben is really good friends with Josh Richardson, their still really cool and TJ MCConnel but those were his former teammates he is also cool with Jayson Tatum, Donovan (even after all that) I don’t know if their actually friends but he follows them on IG and he usually only follows his teammates he is also friends with Tristan Thompson and of course Lebron but i think that has more to do with Rich Paul, also D’Angelo. I’ve seen phots of him interacting with players like Lou Will, Zion and he greeted Dame at All Star 2020. I mean he doesn’t have a lot of friends in the league but he is not necessarily in an island by himself.
is he really friends with jt & donovan though or are they just cool? cause i could be wrong but i don’t think i’ve heard any of them say anything about each other or even hang out. with other players there’s probably little acknowledgement but friends friends? that doesn’t sound like ben at all idk

Essentially, some experts did a kind of free-form roleplaying game to try and simulate various outcomes of the election (the first is a solid Biden win; second is a narrow Biden win; third is an ambiguous/questionable result in Trump’s favour; fourth is Trump indisputably wins the electoral college but not the popular vote)
The result of the election places us in the first scenario, which essentially involved massive corruption as Trump and his cronies essentially loot the government, attempts to cover up crimes and write blanket pardons, obstruction of Biden’s transition, allegations of fraud, and then, after Biden takes power, Trump sets up a far right media network and preps one of his kids to run in 2024 (they went with Donald jr, although like video!Tristan, Ivanka seems more likely to me, or even him running again), but without much in the way of violence
The second scenario had a small electoral college lead and <1% of the popular vote in Biden’s favour. This is substantially closer than what happened in our timeline. In this scenario, Trump’s camp tries to convince some states to send pro-trump electors instead/as well as the ones matching the actual votes; attempts to delegitimise all mail-in votes; and alleges the election is being stolen. Trump also spread a baseless rumour about Biden’s health which spreads well despite quickly being debunked; once the results are fully known the Trump campaign tries to cause chaos so they can frame Trump as a bringer of order, including explicit calls to the proud boys and boogaloo movement. Biden tries to shame the president into conceding, and appeals to moderate republicans and Romney supports Biden’s legitimacy, with Mitch McConnel and most of the rest of the party eventually being forced to acknowledge Biden’s win. Biden also encourages pro-Biden demonstrations. A lot of violence and terrorism happens on the streets, and the military leak info on the plans to deliberately sow chaos and back Biden’s presidency. The far right media goes ham, doxxing electors and attempting to paint Biden as a Chinese pawn. A huge spike in right wing terrorism ensues. Trump ends up getting escorted from the white house after doing pretty much all the stuff he did in scenario one. Biden also moves right to try and create unity, putting republicans in the cabinet. An investigation is started into Trump interfering with the election
Third scenario is an ambiguous result. Trump claims to have won based on starting with a lead, even in states where mail-in ballots swung it. In this scenario, some mail-in ballots got destroyed by a Trump supporter, and this is believed to have swung Michigan, giving Trump an electoral college victory. Trump tries to block counting of mail-in ballots in court, which Biden opposes. GOP support Trump’s claim but don’t endorse his attempts to use the national guard to force the issue. Biden sends a second set of electors here from some states, and claims the win. Both call for demonstrations in the streets, Trump invokes the insurrection act and extreme violence ensues
Fourth scenario seems least plausibly simulated. They believe that Biden would, in this situation, eventually demand that the popular vote should be used instead of the electoral college, rather than what I’m certain he’d actually do and accept the result, possibly calling for reform to use the popular vote. In this scenario though, Biden calls for mass demonstrations, Trump sends in agent provocateurs framing this protest as violent insurrection, and moves to remove the Deep State with the national guard and generally go more nationalist. Republicans buy the narrative of him bringing order putting down violent anarchists. Constitutional crisis, polarised media, and extreme violence ensues
The election results in our timeline put us in the first scenario, but we have seen several actions seen in both the second and even third scenarios (marked in bold). I don’t think we’re looking at anything like a civil war, but a spike in violence, and right wing terrorism is very likely, as is corruption (yet to be revealed), even more blanket pardons, a Trump media network, and Trump preparing for a 2024 run (either himself, or one of his kids)
That is not a good situation at all. Removal of Trump (and barring from future office) would limit his ability to do this somewhat, but ultimately his media network and potentially one of his children will likely continue his legacy of violent far right politics well into the future

Rand Paul Opposition to Previous Disaster Relief Resurfaces as He Seeks Aid for Kentucky
Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell Suddenly Find our “Socialist Government” Useful. (Twitter user Scentabulous @Scentabulous.)
Today, Rand Paul asked Joe Biden for federal help for Kentucky — even though Paul has voted against every federal disaster relief package of the last 10 years. (Twitter user Tristan Snell @TristanSnell)
— By Andrew Stanton | 12/11/21 | Newsweek
Tumblr media
Critics slammed Kentucky Senator Rand Paul for requesting federal aid to help his state recover from devastating tornadoes after he previously voted against relief when other states were struck by natural disasters.
Tornadoes swept across several midwestern and southern states Friday night and Saturday morning, leaving a trail of devastation in their paths.
More than 70 people across Kentucky—one of the hardest hit states—were feared to be killed during the storm. Videos and photos of towns like Mayfield show the extent of the catastrophic damage.
In the aftermath of the storm, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear requested federal assistance to help the state recover from the tornadoes. Paul wrote a letter to President Joe Biden echoing the need for federal relief.
"The Governor of the Commonwealth has requested federal assistance this morning, and certainly further requests will be coming as the situation is assessed," the senator wrote, according to a press release from his office. "I fully support those requests and ask that you move expeditiously to approve the appropriate resources for our state."

In 2013, after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the northeast including New York, he voted against a bill that provided recovery funds to the state.
He said he would have supported the bill if it reappropriated funds from other areas, rather than add on additional spending, WFPL, a Louisville-area news radio station, reported.
"I would have given them 9 billion and I would've taken the 9 billion from somewhere else," he said. "I would have taken it from foreign aid and said you know what, we don't have money for Egypt or Pakistan this year because we have to help the Northeast."
Paul also voted against relief for Puerto Rico after it was hit by Hurricane Maria in 2017, as well as a bill that provided assistance for Texas against it was struck by Hurricane Harvey.
He explained the vote in an opinion piece for The Hill, pointing to his opposition for raising the national debt and again arguing for making cuts elsewhere to support relief funding.

"They say we are out of money to pay for hurricane relief. So instead of finding that money somewhere else in the budget, they simply want to raise the limit on our credit card," he wrote. "This has to stop. We spend too much. We owe too much. We cannot keep spending money we do not have."
In 2019, he also voted against a bill that appropriated $17.2 billion in disaster relief funding to several federal agencies. The bill ultimately passed, with 85 senators voting in its support, while former President Donald Trump signed it into law.
He faced mounting criticism for his past votes.
"Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell suddenly find our *socialist* government useful," wrote Twitter user @Scentabulous.
"Today, Rand Paul asked Joe Biden for federal help for Kentucky — even though Paul has voted against every federal disaster relief package of the last 10 years," wrote lawyer Tristan Snell.
Newsweek reached out to Paul's office for comment Saturday evening but did not hear back by publication. This story will be updated with any response.
