TRUMP OUT OF BALTIMORE rally and protest, September 12, 2019.

Hundreds of protesters gathered yesterday, September 12, anticipating the arrival of Trump, to say no to racism, white supremacy, bigotry, war, and climate change. We defended the rights of immigrants and workers.

Speakers included Rev. CD Witherspoon, CJ Witherspoon, Andre Powell from Peoples Power Assembly, Abraham Tena from CASA in Action, Emilia Duno from ICE Out of Baltimore, Miranda Bachman from Youth Against War and Racism, Meg from Extinction Rebellion Baltimore, Wooki from Communities United, Rafiki Morris from Maryland Council of Elders/All-African People's Revolutionary Party (AAPRP)/Communities United, Maria Celleri from ICE Out of Baltimore,Renee Washington from Peoples Power Assembly, Lars Bertling from Youth Against War and Racism, Ian Schlakman from Maryland Green Party, Richard Ochs from Baltimore Peace Action, Alec Summerfield from Prisoners Solidarity Committee, Sharon Black from Socialist Unity Party - Baltimore/Peoples Power Assembly/Struggle - La Lucha for Socialism, and Max from Unite Here Local 7 who works at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel where the House Republican retreat is taking place.

The hashtag #TrumpIsARat trended on Twitter on Sunday after a Baltimore Sun editorial blasted him for calling the city “rat and rodent infested.”

In the wake of the attacks on the city, which Trump tweeted as part of a longer condemnation of House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the newspaper published an editorial titled “Better to have a few rats than be one.”

"The White House has far more power to effect change in this city, for good or ill, than any single member of Congress including Mr. Cummings. If there are problems here, rodents included, they are as much his responsibility as anyone’s, perhaps more because he holds the most powerful office in the land," the newspaper's editorial board wrote.

In the immediate wake of the tweets, another hashtag, #WeAreBaltimore, trended, with more than 17,700 uses.

How Twitter Affects News Reporting

Citizen journalism is rising in popularity as eye-witness accounts are posted on twitter along with real-time updates during times of crisis. The way the news is presented and the language used affects how those events are reported in News reports and channels. Additionally, current social movements are gaining popular support through trending hashtags like #WeAreBaltimore , #ImpeachNow , and #TrumpisaRat. This inform the way news is reported because it has shifted from a top-down delivery to bottom-up with citizens saying what is important to them. Twitter needs to consider questions about censorship as their policies encroach on free speech. There is currently a debate about whether or not Twitter is evenly applying its policy of removing “dehumanising speech” because it failed to censor Trump’s racially-charged tweets.

Twitter feuds that play out online have become the primary means of airing dirty laundry for celebrities. Other advocates/celebrities have taken to twitter to “clap back” at anti-liberal tweets by shaming those with far right views or inappropriate content. Social shaming is a big part of Twitter culture as the platform is used to oppose ideologies that are apart from one’s own. In line with the news, celebrities often react to the news on twitter. This means that the entire world can see their views on current events. For example, the burning of Notre Dame earlier this year resulted in numerous celebrity reactions to the cultural tragedy. Bette Middler made a joke in poor taste, despite her intentions to shame trump. It was disadvantageous to her because the comment backfired on her instead of targeting Trump like she originally intended.

Yes, it can be an effective means of communication with their customers. Funny tweets often get recognition and good public relations if done in good taste. Honesty and apt comments often get the most attention, be it good or bad observations about the company. US Cybersecurity agency successfully used an an anecdote about pineapple on pizza to compare with the state of foreign affairs. Chase bank unsuccessfully tweeted about budget coffee that resulted in it getting burned for having hard high requirements for its credit cards and accounts.

I think the music industry or political figures have the most active following on twitter. I think it detracts from the experience of traditional entertainment if online feuds are not pertinent to the entertainment material. However, if you are following reality TV stars and follow their twitter accounts, then you enhance your experience of entertainment material - essentially the celebrity’s brand.
