Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu!
New Years in Japan is an absolutely magical time of year, when the whole country shuts down and enters a period of reflection and celebration as one year ends and a new one begins. Businesses close, people travel to their hometowns to spend time with their parents and extended family, and family traditions bridge the Japanese culture of today back across the generations.
On New Years Eve, the celebrations begin. Many Japanese families will stay up until midnight, eating New Years Soba (toshikoshi soba) and mikan oranges, while watching annual competition shows such as the Red and White Song Battle! (Kouhaku Uta Gassen) or the annual Punishment Game comedy show (batsu game). Shortly before midnight, however, the shows conclude, and NHK presents footage of shrines and temples all over Japan, waiting for the midnight ceremonies. At Buddhist temples, the large temple bell is rung 108 times, once for each of the worldly desires central to Buddhism.
[pictured below: the inner courtyard of a Buddhist temple. A tree in the center is still showing the oranges and reds of autumn, and traditional Japanese buildings surround the tree.]
On New Years Day, families celebrate by eating traditional symbolic foods, much like they do in the rest of the world. In Virginia, for example, my family eats black eyed peas, collard greens, cornbread, and ham, and each item has a specific symbolism for the new year. Japan is much the same-- each item of the New Year’s Meal (Osechi Ryouri) is symbolic of things like longevity, luck, good relationships, and prosperity.
The house is decorated with traditional plant decorations meant to bring good luck, harmony, and safety over the coming year. Often included are items like pine and bamboo (kadomatsu), straw ropes (shimenawa and shimekazari), and special sacred rice cakes (kagamimochi). These decorations are placed around the home, with rituals that define when and where they are placed, as well as when and how they are removed.
[pictured below: A small kagamimochi decoration, consisting of two stacked mochi rice cakes and a small figure of a cow on top symbolizing 2021, year of the ox]
Afterwards, usually on New Years Day (but often on the 2nd or 3rd of January), the traditional first shrine visit (hatsumode) is performed. These three days are some of the busiest days of the year for the Shinto Shrines in Japan, as visitors come to pray for the new year, return their old charms and amulets (omamori) from the prior year for disposal, and receive their fortunes for the oncoming year.
[pictured below: The entrance to a Shinto shrine. A torii gate stands in the center with snowy stone lanterns at its base, and snow-covered stone steps rising behind it, a bamboo forest on both sides. A family climbs the steps in the background.]
For my own hatsumode visit, a Japanese friend and I went to Hanyu Gokoku Hachimangu in Oyabe. After climbing approximately eight million stairs, we went to the main shrine building, where I tossed a coin into the offering box and paid my respects to the kami. Then, we moved to the outdoor tents, where I purchased my omamori for 2021. Since my theme for the year is “belonging” (I want to focus on putting in the effort to make a home for myself in Japan), I chose a Sakura blossom charm that will attract good luck and happiness.
[pictured below: two examples of omamori amulets. The amulet on the left is made to look like a miniature pink backpack of the sort that Japanese elemetary school students carry, and is a charm for success in studies and safety in traffic. The amulet on the right is a bedazzled pink sakura blossom, and is a charm for good luck and happiness.]
After purchasing my omamori, I visited the omikuji tent to learn my fortune for 2021. Omikuji fortunes are available year-round, but are a very important New Years tradition, providing guidance for the year ahead. They are pre-printed and piled in a large box, where the recipient draws their fortune from the pile after droppng a donation into the coin box.
[pictured below: an unopened omikuji fortune]
The contents of an omikuji, of course, cannot be determined before the fortune is opened. Generally, however, the overall fortunes range from extremely bad luck to extremely good luck, with at least twelve degrees of luckiness in between. In addition to your overall fortune, an omikuji will also include your luck pertaining to various categories of life, such as career, love, health, finances, major life events, babies, and more.
[pictured below: An opened omikuji. This one includes, from left to right, a section of a traditional poem, overall advice, the main fortune (this one is ‘blessing’, which is so-so but not bad luck), then fortunes and advice for different categories of life.]
Once you have read your omikuji, the traditional next step is to tie the fortune at the shrine, to prevent your bad luck from following you home, and to leave your good luck in the hands of the gods. This particular shrine provided a bamboo sapling to tie omikuji onto, which will later be burned along with all of the attached omikuji, to burn away the bad luck and allow the visitors’ wishes to reach the gods. After tying up our omikuji, we headed out of the tent, and on to our next stop.
[pictured below: a branch of bamboo held up in a red stand, with folded omikuji tied in nearly every available spot.]
We were nearly ready to leave the shrine when I spotted a tent of street food. I am always, always down for almost anything if it is on a stick, so we bought ourselves an order of Mitarashi Dango-- grilled mochi balls slathered in soy sauce, and impaled on sticks. This traditional street food is very popular year-round, and was an excellent pick-me-up after climbing (and then descending) all of those steps!
[pictured below: a tray of Mitarashi dango]
Finally, we wrapped up hatsumode and headed home, the new year rituals complete. Now it is time for contemplation and preparation, before the world starts up again on Monday-- and my heated table (kotatsu) is calling my name.

Translated another song! This one is a bit spookier than last one, this one is inspired by the Japanese spirit-summoning game “Kokkuri san”
Do let me know if I need to make any corrections to the lyrics!

“Go Through” English ver.
Go count the black torii gates,
there's fifteen of them
Are you ready?
We can't speak to each other right now
Laying our fingers over
the uneven, scratching sounds of copper
Shall we finish up?
Yes No
"Who are you?"
I've rowed out on this boat, swaying to and fro
I wonder if I should go home
Kokkuri, Kokkuri
I alone am pointing my finger
O spooky willows escape from them
they will take you away and make a pinky promise at the gate
I want to make a pinky promise with you ‘round sixth PM
We have to get home we can no longer go home
"Come here, I will sing for you a secret lullaby"
Shall we play?
Yes? No?
"Who are you?"
I've rowed out on this boat, swaying to and fro, heading towards somewhere
I'm so tired
Long ago, long ago
there were two children
A single coin is dropped on the dark, dark scrap of paper
Please return the favor to us
Please come to us

How would you have fixed Tokyo Ghoul (Re)'s ending?
I started answering this with a lot of trepidation and ended answering it extremely enthusiastically. I had a ton of fun writing this. Thank you.
I would have extended the manga by a few more volumes, and started from chapter 147, which is where I felt things went really off the rails.
I would have had the basic structure stay the same for a bit, but with a few changes. Kanou would not have committed suicide. Touka’s conversation with Shuu and Nishiki, as well as her conversation with Hide, Akira, and Amon, would have been painful, in which Touka expressed to Akira that she was struggling with her earlier words about how even if her father/someone she loves did something wrong, she would still tell them they were wrong. Akira and Touka bond for real, and Akira is able to help Touka declare, boldly, that Kaneki is worth saving (which Touka believes, but she is scared). Hinami listens, but doesn’t join in on the conversation.
Hide leads Akira and Amon to the CCG, along with Hirako and Yusa. Amon reveals that he is part ghoul, endangering himself, and Akira tells them that if they don’t work with ghouls, they have no chance. Most of the CCG refuses. Saiko, on the other hand, joins Akira, Amon, and Hide as they break away. Hsiao goes with her. Urie is alone and feels lost.
Saiko, Hsiao, Akira, Amon, Hide et al meet with the ghouls and agree to use the chaos to help search for Kaneki’s body (probably also found via the ring). Touka wants to go, but because she is pregnant, she chooses not to, telling Ayato, Hinami, and Shuu to bring Kaneki back to her. Touka is then left to take care of the kids from underground.
Since Touka is vulnerable, Mutsuki would appear then to challenge Touka. They fight, and Urie, who has been dealing with the desertion of Saiko and Hsiao, finally goes to find the ghouls. Higemaru joins him. They stumble upon the Mutsutou fight and have a similar confrontation to canon–except it ends with Touka being told to leave by Urie, but returning to tell Mutsuki she understands being abandoned, but hurting others isn’t going to help. Urie comforts Mutsuki in the same way Mucchan once comforted him. Ends with a Mutsurie hug with Mama Touka.
Kanou shows up, having found where Goat is hiding from tailing Kurona, who came back not knowing where else to go. He overhears that Touka is pregnant and gets greedy. Kimi appears and stops Kanou, giving everyone enough time to escape. She takes the ghouls to the CCG with Mutsuki, Aura, and Urie’s help; Yoriko decides to be brave and refuses to allow anyone to hurt them, which means both Mutsuki and Touka. Takeomi would, of course, protect his wife.
Meanwhile, Ayato, Nishiki, Shuu, et al are searching for Kaneki. Shuu gets increasingly distraught at the destruction Kaneki has wreaked and remembers Karren. Amon is the one who digs Kaneki up, but with help from Takizawa, who returns the cross, and Hakatori. They bring Kaneki to the CCG as well. Nishiki and Kimi reunite.
At the CCG, Hsiao has had Enough and she tells everyone at the CCG the truth of what happens in the Sunlit Garden. Aura, who went along with Mutsuki but is still nursing a grudge against ghouls, is particularly challenged by this, and Ui is angry and upset. Touka is terrified for Kaneki, and she and Hide talk, as do she and Yoriko in which she worries that Yoriko will blame her, but Yoriko doesn’t. Kaneki has the Torii Gate scene and wakes up, much like canon, and speaks to Hide, who is quiet and unwilling to be forthcoming. Kaneki goes for a walk with the Quinx and finds that people are turning into ghouls, again like canon. Saiko has a similar reaction to canon.
The kids from underground are the ones who work out a plan to get to dragon!Rize with Kaneki, as he is immune like in canon. Meanwhile, everyone unites to fight V, who appear with Eto-Owl like in canon. Yusa is told to stay behind by Hirako because he’s a kid, and he and Touka stay with an ailing Saiko.
While fighting, Ui encounters a resurrected Hairu, Tsukiyama a resurrected Karren, Arima for Akira, etc. The Quinx encounter revived Shirazu, and it’s traumatic for everyone. Shuu’s father is killed by zombie Karren. Kaneki and Ayato penetrate deeper into the underground with the kids. They’re attacked by clones, and Kaneki protects the underground kids, thereby partially earning his redemption. Meanwhile, Yoriko begins to turn into a ghoul.
V reveals again that they’ve been eating the corpses of investigators. Akira is using Fueguchi as her quinque and regrets it when she sees Hinami’s face, and they both realize that this is what V wants: to destroy their tenuous alliance. Akira hesitates using Fueguchi, and Takizawa saves her from the attack she left herself vulnerable to. Kurona appears, telling Takizawa they have to stop Kanou, who shows up with a barely-alive Hajime. Amon is horrified by what’s happened to Hajime and angry at Kaneki, before remembering that he has been willing to do similar things to Hinami. Donato and the clowns appear, and Amon fights Donato in a rage, until he remembers what Akira said earlier about good and bad being a part of parents, and Touka’s words about loving someone yet hating their actions. He tells Donato he loved him. Donato saves Amon from a V agent even though it costs him his own life.
Yomo and Uta fight much like in canon, with the same metaphorical imagery, and Yomo and Uta end it by coming to a genuine understanding and empathy even if they don’t see eye to eye. Kurona, Hakatori, and Takizawa fight Kanou while Amon takes Hajime to safety with Kimi, who redeems herself by helping saving Hajime, and Nishiki helps her. Akira saves Takizawa. Juuzou, terrified by whatever Kanou might have done to Shinohara, stops Kanou in the end, saving Kurona… only to begin to turn into a ghoul himself. His squad stay with him.
Kaneki finds Furuta. Ayato falls behind again like in canon. Kaneki and Furuta fight. Kaneki says something along the lines of how his life isn’t stylish, how he’s done terrible things and even has the blood of children on him, but he has a child on the way, a child with his blood too, and that he is alive, and he is not going to waste this life no matter how long or short it might be. Furuta reveals again that he wants everything, imagining a good life with Rize. He is defeated, but not killed, and asks if he, who has done so much evil and is dying anyways, has anything good to offer the world. Kaneki thinks of Touka and tells Furuta if he has someone he loves, he does. They then proceed to the Sunlit Garden.
Touka is terrified for Yoriko and works with Takeomi and Hide to venture into the lab for some kind of cure… where she finds Arata and Yoshimura. Distraught by her two father figures and hearing reports of Eto attacking people out there, she vows to do better for her child, and she and Hide free both Arata and Yoshimura… who recognize them and, without life support, don’t have long to live. Yoshimura leaves with Hide; Arata and Touka have a difficult conversation.
Rize is located in the Sunlit Garden. Kaneki and Rize fight, with the easy answer being killing everyone in the Sunlit Garden–including Rize, but also the children. He refuses. Shirazu and Urie have a particularly brutal fight, in which Urie’s insecurity issues come out and he starts to go kakuja again. Mutsuki kicks his ass and Urie tells Mutsuki that he loves him, and Mutsuki tells Urie he doesn’t need to earn his care, and realizes that all of what Urie has said is because he loves him but sucks at expressing it. They kiss. Meanwhile, Ayato’s fight is not going well, but just when it looks like all is lost, someone else saves him: Arata! Led there by Hinami, who found him with Touka and went to save him. Ayato and Hinami kiss.
Seeing Kaneki fighting to help save the kids angers Furuta, who shouts at him about hurting the Oggai, remembers his own sins towards children and those against him as a child, and in the end, he gives the last bit he has to give Rize back her consciousness, to heal her (yes she eats part of him). She remembers who she is while he is still alive, and he tells her she has to live, and he makes Kaneki promise to let her live. He dies thinking that, in those moments at least, he lived, and that perhaps if he had been able to think better, he could have lived all along. Kaneki realizes that it doesn’t matter if you have someone you love: either way, your life is valuable. Scarred lives are beautiful, too, and he thinks of Hide.
Rize getting her consciousness back wakes up all the other puppets of Kanou’s. Yoshimura ventures to the battlefield, led by Hide, and finds Eto, whom Hide had been working for. Yoshimura helps Eto turn on and kill Kaiko before they both die, at peace with one another. Ui assures Hairu that she is loved, kissing her before she dies in his arms. Karren recognizes Shuu and tells him she’s sorry for what happened to his father, but Shuu is the one who apologizes to her. Arima sees Hirako again and apologizes to him and to Ui. Shirazu is able to say a proper goodbye to Mutsuki and Urie, and asks for them to say goodbye to Saiko and Haru. The resurrected die.
Kaneki gives Rize his shirt to cover her, and they lead the children of the Sunlit Garden out into the light, encountering Ayato and Hinami and leading them (as children) out of the dark too.
Epilogue: Shikorae is tracked down post-battle, as is canon, but while he thinks of himself as an eldritch horror abomination, Kimi and the rest are able to help him, so that he is able to return to being Rio. Akira gives Hinami Fueguchi to bury.
Touka gives birth to Ichika, Shinohara wakes up and accepts Juuzou even as a ghoul, the large mass of humanity who are now ghouls provoke change so that the gov’t and CCG are actively working on treatment plans with Kimi leading them. Yoriko is accepted as a ghoul as well.
Edits for clarity: Urie tells Mutsuki he loves him at their first fight; Mutsuki decides to love Urie in the fight with Shirazu. Touka accepting Yoriko as a ghoul and that it’s not something for her to feel terribly about is part of Touka accepting herself as a ghoul.
Other edits: Oh, and Furuta? Maybe leave it ambiguous as to whether he died or asked Kaneki to let him escape.

After the Rain- Ayakashi March (Ayakashi no March / 妖のマーチ) English Lyrics
WOW this one took me a while. It’s v Japanese-y so please look at my translator notes! Also, it’s the last song that needed to be translated from Izanaware Traveler! Next project will be translating the b-sides from Kaidoku Funou and Anticlockwise.
Song: Soraru and Mafumafu
Lyrics and Composition: Mafumafu
踊る提灯ぶら下げて
実に十もの年月明けて 今集ったのだ
妖者どもよ とおりゃんせ
Dancing lanterns hang down
Indeed, after the passing of decades and countless months, they’re now gathering
Fellow ayakashi1, come on through2
警か泥かの畦道は
洒落た遊具に押しつぶされた
胸のぽっかりは 枯葉の床
否 時節の柄
The “cops or robbers”3 rice fields
Were crushed by stylish playground equipment
The gaping hole in my chest is a bed for dead leaves
No, it suits the season
透き通ったガラス玉に見た夢は
ポケットの中で砕けていた
The dream that I saw in the transparent, glass bead
Was smashed in my pocket
煤けた鳥居の向こう側
君もおいでよ おいでよ
雪洞の赤まで
一つ目も二つ目も
ここに集まりゃ 違いないのさ
On the other side of the sooty Torii4
You too should come over, come over
Until the reds of the paper lanterns
Whether you have one eye or two,
There’s no other place to gather but here!
一切合切
規則も秩序も 安物のおはじきで
一二三四
あの子の涙だってさ 弾いて頂戴
Anything and everything
Rules and order too, with a cheap game of marbles
On the count of 1, 2, 3, 4
Even that girl’s tears, please flick them away
存在証明
裏返る歌留多
相対色はにほへと
君が心から笑えたあの日まで
帰りゃんせ
Proof of existence
And flipped Karuta cards
The color of relativity is fragrant but5
To the day where you could laugh from your heart
Let’s go back to it
飽くに飽いた者ばかり
好いたほどに飽く者ばかり
誰のせいでもない
ボクらも明日を望みやしない
People who only get tired of being tired of things
People who only like things so much they get tired of them
It’s nobody’s fault
We don’t have any hope for tomorrow either
踊る提灯ぶら下げて
実に十もの年月明けて
今残ったのは 虚しさの骸 心の傷
Dancing paper lanterns hang down
Indeed, after the passing of decades and countless months,
The only thing left now is a corpse of emptiness and wounds of the heart
楽しいことひとつポケットに増えりゃ
よろけて膝を擦りむいた
Everytime the fun in my pocket increased
I stumbled and scraped my knee
さみしんぼはなお歓迎さ
君もおいでよ おいでよ
灯籠の赤まで
Those prone to loneliness are welcomed with open arms
You too should come over, come over
Until the reds of the garden lanterns
土蜘蛛も 嘘吐きも
悔いて直せば それでいいのさ
Renegades6, and liars too
Having regrets and fixing them, that alone is enough
千年万年
天国としても 凄惨な地獄でも
一二三四
ボクら何処へいたってさ 笑っていようぜ
For hundreds and thousands of years
If it’s heaven or even a gruesome hell
On the count of 1, 2, 3, 4
No matter where we are, let’s laugh
正真正銘
其れの行く先はいつだって其れのもの
君の見てくれが泣かない世界まで
帰りゃんせ
Realness and authenticity
Beyond it’s destination is always that itself
To a world where you're not cryingy
Let’s go back to it
君が心から笑えたあの日まで
帰りゃんせ
To the day where you could laugh from your heart
Let’s go back to it
Translator notes:
1- Ayakashi: Ok, so I’m terrible and didn’t really want to translate this word. I guess the closest thing to ayakashi in English would be “ghost” or “monster” but those aren’t quite the same orz. Ayakashi are different from normal western monsters because, like youkai, they can also bring good luck and aren’t just there to scare you and be bad. Anyways, Ayakashi are very complicated but super cool so it might be good to just Google them (sorrrryyyyy)
2- とおりゃんせ (Tooryanse): This is referencing a Japanese children’s song with the same name. The meaning of the song is believed to be about a child being spirited away (which in Japanese, is literally “being hidden by a god”) or human sacrifice. In it, an unknown entity is beckoning for a child to follow a path that is (possibly) owned by a god, and it is easier to follow the path than to return from it…
3- 警か泥か- I've never played Cops and Robbers before, but apparently the groups can be decided by using the Iroha Uta (footnote #5)
4- Torii- Those gorgeous red shrine gates at Japanese shrines. They symbolize the separation of sacred and profane spaces and in Shintoism, passing through them is the same as stepping into a god’s presence.
5- いろはにほへと(iro ha nihoe to)- This is a reference to a very famous Japanese poem. So normally people just translate it as “ABCDE…” (because the poem uses every “letter” in the Japanese alphabet and has also been coined as the order of them) but I felt like that was a cop-out and Mafumafu doesn’t put lyrics just to be cute. The poem is about how everything in this world is fleeting, which Mafumafu referenced and slightly changed the meaning of by adding the word “relative”.
6- 土蜘蛛(Tsuchigumo)- I translated this as “renegades”, but it literally means “earth spider”. Tsuchigumo is a type of ayakashi, but according to Wikipedia, it was also a derogatory term for clans that did not show allegiance to the emperor.

Response to here, with @polycoria
Chondrus was confused at what Uta had said. The stranger himself was cofusing to look at, as was the crumbling acritecture he currently lounged on top of. He spent most of his time studying the Torii gate than anything, until his gaze settled back on Uta's features.
"Graveyard? I was not aware that this place housed ancestors," he answered, brow slightly furrowed. His mind floundered through what knowledge he had obtained by mere ovservation. Very little made sense to him at the moment, with the most ambiguity surrounding this figure before him. Or rather, above him.
"May I ask why you are here?"

Because Summer Will End Soon (もうじき夏が終わるから) - Lyrics and English Translation
Music and Lyrics: ナブナ/n-buna
Vocals: 初音ミク V3 (Dark)/ Hatsune Miku V3 (Dark)
From the album 花と水飴、最終電車/ Flower and Starch Syrup, The Last Train
Translation by EJ/bluepenguin (https://ejtranslations.wordpress.com)
This song is the best song on the album tbh (that should’ve got a PV like it’s too good? someone uploaded it on youtube if you want to check it out but yeah buy the album and support n-buna if you can! he deserves it so much)
It’s so unique and it really makes you feel like it’s summer but it’s gonna over soon....
Also it’s the first track of the album and the lyrics contains references to n-buna’s other songs that you might notice if you’re obsessed nerd enough like me. I’m going to list it here! (I might miss some since not all of the songs in the album has been translated, and I don’t listen to all of the songs equally as much since I do have favorites, but I’ve tried my best)
Indigo - Umiyuri Kaiteitan/ Tale of The Deep Sea Lily
Torii gates - Haikei Natsu ni Oboreru/ Scenery, Indulge in Summe
Abelia - Shihatsu to Kafuka/ The First Train and Kafka
Bus Stops - Meryuu/ Mairieux
First Train - Shihatsu to Kafuka/ The First Train and Kafka
Last Train - Umiyuri Kaiteitan and hana to mizuame, saishuu densha/ Tale of The Deep Sea Lily and Flowers and Starch Syrup, The Last Train
Verdigris - ヒグレギ/Higuregi (idk what’s the title’s supposed to translate to. Tried googling but no result. Google translate translated it as higglegy sdhfjhdfjhdsdfhj ;_;)
Shallow Summer - Yoake to Hotaru/ Dawn and Fireflies
I also tried googling for Morning Glories/ Impatiens but they don’t seem to be in any other n-buna songs...? which is weird since other than those two words those two lines contain words from other n-buna songs (I googled “rokushou/verdigris+n-buna” and thats how I instantly found that it’s in Higuregi but nothing came up for those two)
Anyway, to the lyrics/translation!

2019.07.07 SUGIZO HALF CENTURY ANNIVERSARY FES.
It was a rainy day but such a happy day!
Arriving at the venue a bit after 4 I saw some fans already lining up for the entry. I managed to still go up to the second floor and see the flowers before staff closed the area in preparation for door time. They should have started earlier as by 5 there was still a lot of people outside and the show had to start 20 minutes late.
Also, earlier on SUGIZO announced (and staff reminded fans between sets) that taking pictures will be allowed during his performance, but not when any of the guests are on stage.
(so I will include few pictures from SUGIZO's performance but I don't have any from other times)
S.T.K.
When I arrived at my seat a few minutes after 5 the DJ/keyboardist (?) from S.T.K was already on the stage, but they haven't started the proper set until 5:20ish.
When SUGIZO came on stage many fans greeted him with happy shouts and small applause!
I knew nothing about S.T.K besides the fact it's SUGIZO's project, but I was very nicely surprised. I think the best way to describe their music is 'soothing' or 'sounds of earth'.
First song had SUGIZO on electric violin, the other man on keyboard. For the second song (or mid performance?) a female singer in a white dress joined them, she had a really beautiful voice. I remember SUGIZO also used his bow to 'play' wind chime. The backscreen had images of nature or 'the moon logo'.
lynch.
After a quick stage update (all lynch. instruments were ready during S.T.K's set, so they just had to remove few things) it was lynch.'s turn! Fans chanted and clapped to welcome them on stage. Their set had a good mixture of songs!
And I felt lucky that around me were lynch. fans (or double lynch/torii-chans like me) and we had a lot of fun headbanging, singing and dancing.
Hazuki had to do some MC, because.
First was a disbelieving 'So SUGIZO is turning 50? Seriously??' Yeah😂 then Hazuki was explaining his theory that one birthday a year is not enough, there should be 2 birthdays or more!
He was addressing all fans and commenting - 'hello to soul's mates (SUGIZO's fans), ah everyone is here in the front. sukekiyo and Kyo are someone I respect, I'm really happy to be able to play at the same event with them. So sukekiyo fans... are you called Torii-chan? I guess I will say Torii-san (all present ⛩ちゃん burst laughing).
And... lynch fans. Meh lynch fans are just called lynch fans.'
Fans rotfled😂
Hazuki commented that lynch fans are mostly in the back or on the second floor.
He kept addressing fans, he announced a guest to join their set, he asked everyone to become SLAVES (LUNA SEA fans) for the upcoming song and Sugizo came to join them for a LUNA SEA cover! They played IN FUTURE!! It was super fun!!😁
Somehow I didn't think they would cover any songs (maybe I was too focused on Zessai), but I'm so glad they did!! It sounded great! The amount of fanboying from Hazuki was priceless. He was the number one SLAVE😂
Announcing _pulse was also fun! Hazuki's calling included 'women of our senpais! Let's have fun!!!'😂
And finishing their set with MOON was such a nice nod to SUGIZO and LUNA SEA😁
During the break between sets I run to have a look at SUGIZO's guitars, electric violins, Gumpla and costumes. It is mind blowing to realize he is playing music for as long I am alive. His collection of guitars only is absolutely amazing!
sukekiyo
Their set started so suddenly! The BGM was cut and lights just dimmed and went off. Takumi played piano, the members stood ready, when Kyo walked on stage Guuzou moratorium started.
They had back screen with (as far as I can tell) the same videos for songs as their solo in Nakano last month.
Fan who had seat in the first row reported on twitter that SUGIZO was watching sukekiyo's set from the side of the stage.
Kyo first was facing the back screen which showed the (video) close up of his face, on the video he had a suit with diamondy CHA NEL brooch. Real Kyo on the stage was was wearing the black outfit with an 'open back'.
During THE WAIZATSU Kyo turned around and kept dancing. I wonder how other bands' fans felt with the very flashy video after dark moratorium 😂
YUCHI as usual came to the middle and Kyo danced with him as YUCHI was headbanging.
utA came closer to the edge of the stage and kept jumping, raising one leg and jumping. He was totally owning 90s v-kei style - he had sheer sleeves, floaty clothes tied with belt, long boots, old v-kei puffed up hair (he changed later and photo with Takumi shows him in the event t-shirt).
And it matched the song they covered so perfectly! They played SHADE. Woah.
Takumi started playing unknown piano intro and I knew there was a cover song coming!! Excitement level over 9000!! HOW FRICKIN AMAZING THIS WAS ❤❤❤
And I think they made it theirs, it sounded like it could flawlessly fit in on IMMORTALIS. I have just listened to the original and they definitely swapped one guitar for Takumi's piano. As they were playing I couldn't help but remembering when at SUGIZO's tube Kyo and SUGIZO talked about reviving older, fast LUNA SEA's songs.😁
But what a flawless choice, both lyrics and story wise as well - it fit so well with INFINITUM theme!
As sukekiyo started there were random few standing fans here and there on the 1st floor but the whole 1st floor stood up for the cover, dancing and waving their hands with music, and stayed standing since then.
Honnou okotowari was so powerful.
I'm very sure that Takumi played the slow piano melody of Tada, mada, watshi. that they used for the story breaks at their solo Nakano show, but this time it was shorter and went into anima.
And the warm feeling of the poppy field again. 忘れりない
YUCHI took his jacket off before hyohaku flavour - yup, he really was giving his all!
The atmosphere went darker again.
Kyo was dancing and was so lost in it he dropped his mic too early, but he just picked it up and continued singing to dance again and drop it one more time later.
Seeing them leaving one by one from the second floor looked so different, especially that the stage looked so big compared to the space they took with their equipment.
When Takumi finished the last piano notes they got a very fierce applause!! ❤
SUGIZO
When the staff prepared the stage for SUGIZO's set I could see why they needed a stage that big. The front of the stage was left open for SUGIZO, in the back they set three stands, two percussion sets and one for keyboardist.
To me SUGIZO's solo music is either ethereal or quite dancey, something you can play when you need to relax or need something inspirational when painting.
But not gonna lie - Zessai was the highlight for me.
Kyo came on stage wearing a suit, he changed into his more fitted grey piece. For Zessai SUGIZO and Kyo shared the space in the middle. Guitar and microphone.
It was so powerful, so perfect, so beautiful.
I can't remember at all what kind of video they had for it on the screen, my whole focus was on two of them on the stage.
Steady and soft.
When the singing part was over Kyo just left, which probably surprised some people. But this was SUGIZO's anniversary.
As reported by a fan from the very front SUGIZO still said 'thank you, Kyo-chan' turning to the side of the stage (where Kyo quite possibly stood).
They played two more songs which I enjoyed dancing. The light and laser show also looked amazing. Then SUGIZO introduced the musicians who performed with him, threw few things and they left after bowing deeply.
Fans gave a loud applause and kept clapping, some shouting SUGIZO's name.
Then, instead of calling for encore many fans started using flashlights and singing Happy Birthday song.
Of course SUGIZO came back.😁
He gave a speech thanking everyone for helping him to create this event. He also talked about caring for earth and clean energy...
'Sorry for interrupting!!' - came the cake delivered by yours one and only Hazuki! As he shouted his arrival he wheeled the caked in on trolley covered with a black cloth.
They called the rest of lynch. back on stage, then called sukekiyo. Almost all of them changed into the event t-shirt with an exception of Kyo and Takumi. lynch members stood on the left side of SUGIZO and sukekiyo on the right.
Hazuki prompted fans to sing Happy Birthday again.
They took a picture with all bands members. It made me feel so fluffy inside to see how Kyo was herding other sukekiyo members to go stand closer to SUGIZO, to go ahead in front of him. But photographer asked everyone to squeeze more and Kyo's plan failed as SUGIZO motioned Kyo to sit next to him, sukekiyo and lynch. members around them.
(atm we are all waiting for them to publish the photo!!)
There was another very important thing. Hazuki (having a new job of the MC which suited him perfectly) announced that the Minister of the Environment (also the Minister of State for Nuclear Emergency Preparedness), Yoshiaki Harada will be joining them on stage.
He also gave a speech, a cute part was 'I knew he was a skillful musician but I didn't realize Sugi-chan was so popular' - he said he knows SUGIZO through his work related to hydrogen energy. He was full of praise especially that the show in Nakano was fully powered by hydrogen energy!!
SUGIZO received an official recognition for his work for environment, with Harada very formally handing him a letter.
When bands members were leaving the stage they all stopped by SUGIZO to shake his hand, bow and share some words. Kyo was last and he extended his hand but SUGIZO gave him a warm hug instead.
❤❤❤
And when Kyo was walking off from the stage he sent some foxes to the audience🦊
SUGIZO talked more about his projects, including explaining the costume he wore, coat jacket created by tenbo, the design was made using drawings created by children from Irak suffering from cancer, the inside of the coat had photos of some of the children. SUGIZO talked about the collaboration with tenbo (check their website here). I think he said something along the lines that the state some of those children are is very similar to the comdition in which were children in Hiroshima after bombing.
Hazuki interrupted him before with the cake, but he was interrupted again as suddenly a backtrack music started to play 😂
But this time SUGIZO finished his thought before they played two more songs.
Synchronicity was such a soft, perfect ending!
SUGIZO once more introduced all musicians, they bowed together and left, leaving only SUGIZO. He took some selfies with the whole audience (we're waiting on those photos, too!), threw some water bottles and picks and walked away while waving to fans.
An amazing night!
