“I used to try and prove myself to the naysayers, the critics, to the people who said that Off-White wasn’t valid, but then I realized that those people are powerless when it comes to the community I’m speaking to,” said Virgil Abloh. “Now I focus on the legacy I’ll leave behind.”

I went to the Virgil Abloh “Figures of Speech” exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum last night as a part of the Members Preview. I have to honestly say I was underwhelmed. Knowing his reputation, I expected a more substantial cross-referencing of work and influences. I admit I may not be his core audience but I felt it was overblown and underwhelming. And the guidebook was practically incomprehensible. In fact, as I read through it more, I notice the frequent use of the word “playful” when I think they mean to say “snarky”. It mostly seemed like people were interested in merch than the work. I’m sure this will do great for the museum but it didn’t do it for me. .... #UnderGlassCollection #ShoeDaydreams #CuratedCloset #TheClosedDoorCollection #SophisticatedPrecious #ny #newyork #brooklyn #brooklynmuseum #virgilabloh #VirgilAblohBkM #exhibit #fashion #figuresofspeech @brooklynmuseum (at Brooklyn Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfeHmq2ufwT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
This week, Serena Williams will take to the court right here in New York City for her final U.S. Open before retirement.
A six-time winner of the U.S. Open, Williams collaborated with Virgil Abloh to create this outfit for her appearance in the 2018 tournament. The result is a skirted bodysuit that expresses her bold playing style and transgressive fashion sensibility. A sporty, asymmetric top flows into an airy tulle tutu, a departure from the game’s usual simple, all-white dresses and pleated skirts.
Beyond their interest in fashion, Williams and Abloh shared the experience of excelling to the highest ranks of predominantly white enterprises. Best of luck, Serena!
“It sounds so backwards to say, but you have to break a lot of disciplines in order to create a new version of a discipline,” said Shayne Oliver in conversation with Virgil Abloh for AnOther Magazine in 2021.
Shayne visited to SOCIAL SCULPTURE in Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” to share the impact that Abloh’s collaborative spirit made on his work and the projects they took on together.

Virgil Abloh took nothing for granted in his approach to design. This attitude is encapsulated in his motto "question everything," which can be read on the nylon banner that hangs from the ceiling above the exhibition.
Abloh said, “When I studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, it was the humanities classes that I had put to the side that ultimately started me on this path of thinking about creativity in a much more cultural context—not designing for design’s sake, but connecting design to the rhythm of what’s happening in the world.”
Did you know that social psychologist, Amy Cuddy, argues that "power posing"—standing in a posture of confidence—can boost our mood and might impact our success? Here are just a few of the power poses our visitors have brought to the Museum lately.

“Until I was seventeen, I didn’t know all that much,” Virgil Abloh said. “I was my most authentic self—I was just a sponge. I’m trying to revert to that point, that point is what I call the ‘authentically real.’”
Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” closes in only two weeks. Experience the visionary designer’s work before the exhibition closes and share your visit with us using #MyBkM.
“I think there was a lot of admiration for the fact that he could move so fluidly within all these disciplineswhile being trained as an architect,” says Samir Bantal of his friend and collaborator, Virgil Abloh.
Join Bantal on his visit to Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” as he reflects on working with Abloh in the field of architecture.
“I believe in mentoring, because I know that the barrier for me took many years and a lot of hours [to overcome], said Virgil Abloh. “I don’t really adopt that same philosophy that another kid who’s younger has to jump through all those hoops.”
With his one-of-a-kind creative process that became as innovative, referential, and visionary as the artist himself, Virgil Abloh led with intention. His work across fashion, design, architecture, and culture at large is not just inspirational, but has opened doors for his peers and for generations to follow in his footsteps.
