USAID Commits $3 Million to African Water Facility for Water and Sanitation Projects in Africa
Tumblr media
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has pledged a substantial $3 million to the African Water Facility (AWF) to bolster water and sanitation investment projects in Africa. This commitment will provide vital grants and technical assistance to African countries and regional economic communities.
The African Water Facility: Aiming for Sustainable Solutions
Hosted by the African Development Bank and an initiative of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), the African Water Facility stands as a unique project preparation facility solely dedicated to tackling water and sanitation issues in Africa. Its primary objective is to assist African countries in achieving the water-related Sustainable Development Goals and the African Water Vision 2025. The facility achieves this by preparing innovative water and sanitation projects throughout the continent.
Water and Sanitation Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to face dire challenges in terms of water and sanitation access. Approximately 400 million people lack basic water supply services, while over 700 million people lack access to decent sanitation. Shockingly, nearly 200 million people still resort to open defecation, and a staggering 750 million people lack access to proper hygiene facilities. Addressing these issues necessitates significant investment in water supply and sanitation, improved governance of water resources and operations, and the development of climate-resilient infrastructure.
AWF's Impact: Funding and Downstream Investment
Since its inception, the African Water Facility has provided €205 million in grant funding for water and sanitation projects in Africa, leading to over €1.7 billion in downstream investments in the sector. The commitment from USAID further solidifies the international support and recognition garnered by the facility as a trusted partner and valuable resource for Africa's water sector.
USAID's Ambitious Goals
Aligned with its 2022-2027 Strategy, USAID aims to provide access to safe drinking water for 22 million people and sanitation facilities for another 22 million people over the next five years. This substantial commitment reflects USAID's dedication to addressing the pressing water and sanitation challenges across the African continent.
Funding Dialogue and Future Plans
As the African Water Facility continues its efforts to secure additional funding, it is actively raising millions of euros to develop investments that will accelerate both public and private sector financing in the water sector. Furthermore, the facility seeks to promote innovation to improve service delivery. The support from USAID comes as the facility gears up for its 2023 funding dialogue in Paris, scheduled for October. During this event, the facility will engage with donors, beneficiary governments, multilateral organizations, and international entities to strengthen financing for water and sanitation investment projects in Africa.
Urgent Solutions: Mobilizing Resources for Water and Sanitation
"The negative impacts of inadequate access to water and sanitation and poor management of water resources are seen in many countries in Africa. The African Water Facility exists to accelerate viable, climate-responsive investments by providing grants, technical assistance, and developing catalytic and innovative projects to improve water and sanitation service delivery and water governance in Africa," stated Mtchera Chirwa, Coordinator for the African Water Facility.   With its revised Strategic Plan for 2017-2025, the facility aims to mobilize resources to increase the delivery of bankable investment projects in water and sanitation across the continent. This ambitious endeavor is expected to grant access to climate-resilient and safely managed water supply to 2.6 million people, while providing basic sanitation facilities to 2.4 million people. The partnership between USAID and the African Water Facility holds promise for transforming the water and sanitation landscape in Africa, offering hope for millions who have long suffered from inadequate access to these essential resources.   Sources: THX News & African Development Bank Group. Your donation will help to support the activities of the people of Ouanaminthe, Haiti as they work to build a canal to help bring #water to their agricultural communities.

Kanal la p ap kanpe! You all are making sure of it. It’s been 5 days and you’ve given over $80,000 so far. Over 1,100 people have come together to give what they can to support the development of Haiti. Wow. Thank you! We will do right by your generosity. Kanal la p ap kanpe! 🇭🇹❤️✊🏿Today through Monday my team is purchasing products and preparing to provide meals for all workers and security agents for 5 days next week… 250-300 meals will be delivered daily. Additionally, we are working on a plan to directly support each worker. I’ll share details as we solidify plans.
I’ve seen some videos go super crazy viral in Haiti saying that gang members were the ones who sent the 1,000 sacks of cement to the canal. I haven’t cared much because this isn’t about my face being at the center of this movement but after many tags and MANY people sharing concerns… I understand. The image of gangs being the largest donor to the canal, jumping in when even the Haitian government hasn’t is very dangerous. It gives gangs more power than they actually have in Haiti. This is a diaspora movement. Haitians abroad have raised as of right now $87,674 in 5 days… just on my social media platform. This a powerful, inspiring story that shouldn’t be hijacked. This ought to give hope as opposed to despair. Although I’ve set the story straight with receipts posted on my page … here’s a part of my announcement to the public clearly stating this is from the diaspora. Thank you, @hitnewstv for the final encouragement to clarify. Souple an nou pa bay gang yo plis pouvwa pase sa yo deja gen. 🙏🏿✊🏿🇭🇹

A project such as drilling a well to a depth of more than 60m, in the middle of nowhere, in an area where no one has access to water, is a challenge that requires working with the local community. Due to these few 15 days of preparation, we had to go to the site every day, tackle the roads that are not, remember to bring all the equipment, organise, demonstrate great adaptability and resistance : Fatigue, climate. But what immense happiness today! This is the ultimate reward, the joy of seeing the smiles on the faces of these villagers: They are going to have water very soon! These few images show the work we carried out during the 15 days preceding the start of the drilling, which began yesterday November 08, 2021. A project leaded by 🇨🇭@fairfuturefoundation and 🇮🇩@kawanbaikindonesia, from the field in #sdmbinudita and from our Base Camp of #rumahkambera (East Sumba and Denpasar). Those last few 15 day, an access had to be opened in order to transport the equipment on site, certainly more than a ton of material and drilling equipment. Nearly 1500m across virgin fields, tall grass, land, and dealing with the relief of the land. Note that no vehicle had previously entered the site of this drilling and it took us an hour to arrive at the site we had chosen last month. An immense feeling of having arrived in a sort of "promised land", where water will soon ⛲spring up! It was also necessary to build a place so that the drillers can spend about 15 days on the site, including sleeping, eating, washing, cooking... But also finding solutions to bring and store the nearly 💧20'000 litres of water it takes to drill a well over 60 meters deep. In this community live more than 200 families who do not have access to water or sanitation solutions. Therefore the enthusiasm is formidable, a surge of solidarity is triggered spontaneously, and the help of these poor families in terms of economy, is very touching. #fairfututurefoundation #kawanbaikindonesia #water #wateraccess #cleanwateraccess #sumbatimur #NTT #Switzerland #SwissNGO #drillingwell #sustainablesolutions #makeadondation #donateforfairfuture (at Sd Mbinu Dita) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWCrM5Il5jz/?utm_medium=tumblr

If Writing A Story Of A Shower Without Water Makes You Laugh, Would You Mind?
Tumblr media
Story begins
I decided to take a shower, so I went to my bathroom. I wouldn’t want to wake up my one-year-old. I said to myself,’’ finally I made it.’’
If you have little ones you can relate to my situation. I turn on my shower, and start rubbing soap all over my body with music playing inside me.
But a few seconds later I realized that there was not even a single drop pouring out of my shower. Suddenly, I got all those thoughts of getting late to work. I tried to convince myself that everything is fine. All I need is some patience. Darling, not to worry……..
Nothing worked ,not even the positive affirmations.
I was standing in my bath with soap all over me and on some parts of my skin, it started drying itself.
I asked myself, "what option do I have?” and the answer was…..
The only thing that I don’t want to try .....is to call this person to help me out from this terrible situation.
In such situations, I guess this is the only option that we usually have.
Our Husbands
Thus, mommy screams like anything
And wakes everyone in the house, even the little one. Until my husband tapped me several times and told me to calm down. He offered me a glass of water. This is when I felt that it was a dream. A bad dream. Oh! So it was a nightmare, we have our Water”, I said holding my glass.
HOWEVER,this is not the end to my worry
What I ask myself every single day
How long do we get access to this water? With a bulletin telling every other day that water is drying.
Am I lying to myself that this will never happen?
Every single time I drink water from a glass or a bottle,
I remind myself not to throw even a single drop of water in the kitchen sink.
How do we use our water supply?
We sometimes buy bottled water whenever we are traveling but we rely on tap water when we are home.
Water use for  household purposes:
washing clothes, cooking food, taking showers, and flushing our toilets
Also, we utilize it for cleaning the kitchen, mopping the floor, watering our garden, and washing our cars.
Do you know how much water we consume on these activities per day?
800–1000 gallons per day per person
And we only have .3% of water for human use.
Tap water has dried up in many parts of South Africa and has become the first country with Zero Water. So, how they are managing things.
they take bath in the shower while standing in a small tub and then reuse it
to water their plants
for mopping
They do not even flush their toilets all the time
Yes, they do flush when someone poops in the pot.
We have the responsibility
If you have not faced something like this yet,
You are lucky like me, but what about our future generations?
And it is our responsibility to leave a better place for them, not worse of course.
Life lessons from Coronavirus
Covid-19 has taught us the value of Air. The Oxygen that keeps us Alive. We all know what we have gone through. I am starting this chain because I know somewhere deep down you also want to contribute to your planet.
Let us do it this time.
My Request — Use your bucket this time
I request whosoever reading this article to take a pledge not to waste our water at all.
So, next time, you go to the bathroom to shower, fill a bucket of water and take your bath. If any part of the water is left, keep it safe for the next person or you can also use this water for your plants.
If you do not have water in your shower, use your bucket next time.

Today is World Water Day. Water is essential for life yet millions of people do not have easy access to clean water. As a society we are incredibly wasteful with water. We must do more to ensure that every human being has access to clean drinking water. #WorldWaterDay #CleanWater #WaterAccess #WaterRights https://www.instagram.com/p/CMttqhhFue2/?igshid=1ojc5jzyhkiqv

Hello everyone, Being there is essential, on the 🎯spot to have a first-hand view of people's problems. Time changes things, quickly here. It is therefore necessary to adapt the past discourse to that of today, so as not to miss the essential and the reality of things, in their rapid evolution. 🚰The water! This good, so precious to all forms of life. Pyramid concept of a disaster if you close your eyes. A vast majority of the wells are dry. Or there is only 10-40cm of water left ... which is dirty, or unsuitable for consumption, even dangerous. The pyramidal effect, or dominion of a dry well: The cultures dry, then die. Just like the villages, the families, economy... People who can no longer drink in quantity and quality, cousin becomes difficult, taking a rare shower and the income becomes non-existent while he continues to live. A vast majority of us, when we need a little (or a lot) of water, we turn on the tap and drink it, sometimes it's even as healthy as bottled mineral water. What a change I have, how lucky we are. And we don't usually get sick. Water will give us the energy to go to work, to have ideas, to feel physically and mentally fit. To have projects, not to have dark ideas. This will allow us to wake up the next day as well. Them? They have to walk... Sometimes 10 kilometers to have water for cooking, drinking, taking a shower from time to time - maybe once a month -. These few images taken two days ago show a reality of what family life is like here, in the regions where we are now. Behind these images, of course, there is lives of people, in their environment, their home, the social, environmental, psychological aspect... To avoir to start a war with the neighbor, who still has a little water for him. The lack of water destroys income, everything becomes difficult, even fertility! 🇨🇭@fairfuturefoundation and 🇮🇩@kawanbaikindonesia on the spot, the 31.10.2021, Rumah Kambera. #water #wateraccess #cleanwateraccess #healthylife #rumahkambera #fairfuturefoundation #kawanbaikindonesia #respect #socialenvironnement #stayhealthy #donateforcleanwater #oneglassofwater #takeashower #ntt #indonesia #sumbatimur (at Rumah Kambera) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVruFepB2kk/?utm_medium=tumblr
