Happy National Dictionary Day!
Although the day was introduced to honor the birthday of American lexicographer Noah Webster, we are more interested in his innovative predecessor Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). Johnson was an English writer with credits as a poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. In 1746, he was approached by a group of publishers to create an authoritative English dictionary and agreed, boasting he could complete the dictionary within three years. In the end, he single-handedly completed the task within eight years utilizing only clerical assistance.
Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language was first published in London by noted Scottish printer and publisher William Strahan on April 15, 1755. While certainly not the first dictionary, it was groundbreaking in its documentation of the English lexicon providing not only words and their definitions, but examples of their use. Johnson accomplished this by illustrating the meanings of words through literary quotes, often citing Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden. He also introduced lighthearted humor into some of his definitions, most notably describing a lexicographer as “a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original and detailing the signification of words”. Of equal amusement, oats are defined as “a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Dictionary of the English Language was published in two volumes with volume one containing A-K and volume two L-Z. Its pages were 46 cm tall and 51 cm wide, and it is said that outside of a few special editions of the Bible no book of this size and bulk had been set to type and that no bookseller could print it without help. Johnson’s dictionary was the pre-eminent dictionary for over 100 years until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1884. Despite some criticism about his etymology and orthoepic guidelines, Johnson’s dictionary was tremendously influential in its methodology for how dictionaries should be constructed and entries presented, casting a shadow over all future dictionaries and lexicographers.
Tumblr media
Several of the words in Johnson's dictionary were painstakingly defined. "Take" has 134 definitions running 8,000 words over 5 pages.
Tumblr media
Woodcut tailpieces adorn the dictionary interspersed between letters.
Special Collections holds a facsimile reproduction of Johnson's dictionary, published in 1967 by AMS Press of New York.

Leakings and the British Press
I tend to do some of my best thinking in the shower in the morning. Not sure if it has to do with my brain being fresh in the morning or if the water just pounds good ideas into my brain.
Anyways, after watched both the Anderson Cooper interview and the Michael Strahan interview, both twice, something Harry kept saying over and over again in both interviews stuck with me.
Harry was saying that the palaces, aka William, Charles, and the other royals, would continually brief against, mostly Meghan but Harry as well. Harry claimed that the palaces would collaborate with the British press and plant false stories about Meghan to take attention away from the other senior royals. He said they did this to distract from negative stories about the other senior royals. It was a cover up at Meghan’s expense.
Now I have spent the past few hours racking my brain trying to think about these “negative” stories about the other royals.
As we know, Catherine rarely has anything negative written about her. The top stories that come to mind are “Three Kitchens Kate” her being “work shy” and of course her “fight” with Rose Hanbury.
Charles, well I don’t think anything bad about him came out until after Harry left which was the donations for favors scandal.
William, yeah other than him being work shy or having a temper, and his kids going to a posh expensive school that he pays for out of his own pocket, but that is about all I can think about.
Camilla, well she tends to keep her nose clean as well.
The British press have all expressed their confusion as well over these claims. They keep saying “what negative articles about the other royals!?”
However, all the articles that made Meghan look bad were all of her own doing.
She is the one who demanded a big tiara. She is the one who yelled at The Queen’s chef about the taste of eggs. She is the one who made Catherine and Charlotte cry. She is the one who cried about no one asking if she was okay in a poverty stricken country where girls are raped and murdered daily. She is the one who had a $300k baby shower and her security for it was paid for by the UK taxpayers. She is the one who broke royal protocol over and over again by walking in front of Harry in the processional line and to greet a King. She is the one who planned surprised engagements on days other senior royals have very important speeches or engagements or tours. She is the one who cleared out an entire section at Wimbledon because she was too important to sit with the peasants. She is the one who lied to the palaces about work she knew she was not allowed to do and did it anyways. She is the one who lied on court documents. She is the one who has changed the story more than once and when her inconsistencies are pointed out it isn’t her being a liar but the press being racist.
So how exactly by reporting on the truth were the other palaces leaking or throwing her under the bus? Sure a couple of the instances happened behind closed doors so obviously those were leaked but, from memory, this was around the time that Meghan had started her own PR against the BRF and how they were threatened by her and her star power. She was saying her and Harry left KP because William was a bully. So we got the leaks of the tiara, the egg issue, and Catherine & Charlotte crying.  However, all the other ones, and many more, were there for us to witness with our own eyes and put two and two together. We didn’t need the British press to point out that when another senior royal, especially Catherine or Camilla had something important scheduled, Meghan would show up somewhere as a surprise!
KP even issued denials about stories that WERE true. The stories that Catherine and Meghan were fighting was true and KP issued a statement saying it was a lie. I think the only stories that were false were the copper bath tub and yoga floor, which many people believed Meghan and Harry planted themselves.
So I guess I am just super confused over the "fake" stories about Meghan? I can't recall a single fake article other than the bathtub.
I love how Harry has this attitude that the world cannot form opinions on their own and that us peons believe everything that we read.
This is the dude that fell for a fake phone call and believed in an island doesn’t exist. No questions asked. But yeah…we are the chumps.

This is from the DM: 'I don't think that, even if there was an agreement or an arrangement between me and my family, there's that third party [the British press] that's going to do everything they can to make sure that that isn't possible,' he told Strahan.
'Not stopping us from going back but making it unsurvivable.'
It’s Harry talking to GMA. But like I want to just ask Harry why it’s possible that life for his brother, who is heir, is “survivable”. Why is Harry any different. He’s made it different because he’s such a whiny asshole, that’s why the press will come for him. And btw Harry the press can still come for you even if you live in America. It’s called the internet you moron.
I wish someone would point out to him that HE is the one that's making it "unsurvivable." Since mid-December they've been on a media blitz w/ reality show, book, interviews, magazine covers.
If they want to live a quiet life of anonymity where no one has anything to say about them, they can do that! Think of ALL the royals who live that life... like, literally all of them. Even William and Catherine who are by FAR the most popular royals still live an incredibly private life. We never hear about anything they do privately. FFS they made 2 of Catherine's cousins godparents to their children and we were like "omg right, we forgot Catherine has a whole family that they're close to" because NO ONE in the Waleses orbit talks to the press, the Walses don't talk to the press, they don't leak shit... they just get on with their lives. And - perhaps more importantly - they play the game. "Sure, you can have a first day of school pic and a birthday pic of the kids, now leave them alone for the year."
Someone pointed out that the Walses USED to do a holiday photo for the reporters like Charles and Diana did - ya know, the cute family ski trip photos. But when the reporters got greedy and nasty about it (criticizing something about the trip) the Walses were like "Okay, no more ski trip photos then - sorry you blew it."
Did the press attack them for it? No. It made the press GET IN LINE because they were like "Oh, if we mess up they're going to slap our wrist a little." But the Walses didn't overreact. They didn't take away all access forever, they didn't end "the agreement" that keeps the press in line - they just tweaked the rules.

Afterglow: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors                                        edited by Grist (2023)
Afterglow is a stunning collection of original short stories in which writers from many different backgrounds envision a radically different climate future. Published in collaboration with Grist, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions, these stirring tales expand our ability to imagine a better world.
Inspired by cutting-edge literary movements, such as Afrofuturism, hopepunk, and solarpunk, Afterglow imagines intersectional worlds in which no one is left behind—where humanity prioritizes equitable climate solutions and continued service to one's community. Whether through abundance or adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of survival, these stories offer flickers of hope, even joy, as they provide a springboard for exploring how fiction can help create a better reality.
Afterglow welcomes a diverse range of new voices into the climate conversation to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress. A creative work rooted in the realities of our present crisis, Afterglow presents a new way to think about the climate emergency—one that blazes a path to a clean, green, and more just future.

Economic Science Fictions  https://mitpress.mit.edu/9781906897734/economic-science-fictions/
Edited by William Davies (2018)
An innovative new anthology exploring how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics.
From the libertarian economics of Ayn Rand to Aldous Huxley's consumerist dystopias, economics and science fiction have often orbited each other. In Economic Science Fictions, editor William Davies has deliberately merged the two worlds, asking how we might harness the power of the utopian imagination to revitalize economic thinking.
Rooted in the sense that our current economic reality is no longer credible or viable, this collection treats our economy as a series of fictions and science fiction as a means of anticipating different economic futures. It asks how science fiction can motivate new approaches to economics and provides surprising new syntheses, merging social science with fiction, design with politics, scholarship with experimental forms.
With an opening chapter from Ha-Joon Chang as well as theory, short stories, and reflections on design, this book from Goldsmiths Press challenges and changes the notion that economics and science fiction are worlds apart. The result is a wealth of fresh and unusual perspectives for anyone who believes the economy is too important to be left solely to economists.
Drowned Worlds
edited by Jonathan Strahan (2016)
Review: “The title and the editor both pay tribute to the inspiration of J.G. Ballard’s The Drowned World, that prescient piece of nascent cli-fi first published in 1962. Strahan lauds this “lush, powerful book that tells of a post-apocalyptic world … seen through a romantic haze that hangs over the flooded, inundated ruins of a world laid waste by rising oceans.” Many of the stories in the collection, indeed almost all, share a similar dreamlike or fantastic Ballardian ambience of a world long past the climate change, where remnants of our current civilization often persist just as fantastic fragments.“
Futures From Nature: 100 Speculative Fictions from the pages of the leading science journal
by Henry Gee (2008)
Are aliens really not interested in us at all? Is there a significant health benefit from drinking your own urine? Is loading your personality into a computer the best way to survive the death of the body? Is the death of the body really necessary? Here are a very large number of very small fictions on the subject of the future and what it might be like. The authors include scientists, journalists, and many of the most famous SF writers in the world. Futures from Nature includes everything from satires and vignettes to compressed stories and fictional book reviews, science articles, and journalism, in eight-hundred-word modules. These pieces were originally published in the science journal Nature between 1999 and 2006.

Happy Birthday (or rather, day of christening) to Scottish philosopher and economist Adam Smith (1723-1790), author of The Wealth of Nations!
Tumblr media
Adam Smith poured over a decade of research into his classic work that laid the foundation for the discipline of modern economics. The Wealth of Nations (1776) introduced the concept of absolute advantage and challenged mercantilism (wealth comes from maximizing exports and minimizing imports) and physiocracy (wealth comes from physical land) by arguing that wealth may be built through free-market capitalism. Smith’s magnum opus shaped the terms of debate for both his proponents and critics for centuries after its publication. The Wealth of Nations comes in second place for the most-cited pre-1950 economic texts (behind Karl Marx’s Das Kapital). And even the leading modern social science publication Das Kapital : Kritik der politischen Öekonomie (1867), is largely Marx’s answer to Smith’s Wealth of Nations.
Tumblr media
Much to printer William Strahan’s pleasant surprise, the first edition of The Wealth of Nations sold out in six months. He didn’t expect a work that “requires much thought and reflection” to be so popular. Based on the bookplate, our first edition copy was likely snagged by a member of the Treffry family that hails from Cornwall, England.
Tumblr media
If nothing else, we hope you enjoy the vibrant morocco labels (see photo at the top) and the spotted polished calf that embellish an otherwise dense (even by late eighteenth-century standards) tome of economic theory.

On August 25th 1776 the Philosopher David Hume died.
In his books on philosophy, Hume said that many of our beliefs do not come from reason. Instead, they come from our instincts or feelings. For example, reason does not tell us that one thing causes another. Instead, we see one thing and then we see another, and we feel a link between the two. Similarly, reason does not tell us that someone is a good person. Instead, we see that the person is kind and friendly, and we feel a special moral feeling. Because Hume thought that these beliefs do not come from reason, people call him a “skeptical” or “anti-rationalist” philosopher.
His scepticism went as far as religion, when it was dangerous to question the existence of god and the vast majority of people were believers.
There’s a wee anecdote Hume himself used to recount, he told the story t that on his way back to the Old Town after visiting his New Town house, while it was still being built, he lost his footing he fell knee-deep into mud at the Nor’ Loch, it was being drained at the time and was more a Nor’ Bog than Loch, (it is now Princes Street Gardens) he was so stuck he could not get out on his own and finally gave a cry for help.
An old fishwife is said to have went to his aid but on recognising him as “Hume the Atheist” refused to help, Hume implored,
“But my good woman, does not your religion as a Christian teach you to do good, even to your enemies?"
"That may well be,” she replied. “But ye shallnae get oot o’ that, till ye become a Christian yersell, and repeat the Lord’s Prayer and the Belief!"
Did he stand his ground and ridicule the superstitious beliefs of this woman? Of course not. To the surprise of the fishwife, he readily complied, and true to her word she helped him out of the bog.
Hume was a careful planner and long before he died he left the following instructions in his will:
“.........I also ordain that, if I shall dye any where in Scotland, I shall be bury’d in a private manner in the Gallon Church Yard (also known as the Calton graveyard), the South Side of it, and a Monument be built over my Body at an Expence not exceeding a hundred Pounds, with an Inscription containing only my Name with the Year of my Birth and Death, leaving it to Posterity to add the Rest.”
His request would be fulfilled, although later additions and alterations would mar the dignified simplicity of Hume’s vision. Before his monument could be built, however, the great Skeptic and Empiricist, had to be buried in the plot he had secured for himself in Calton.
Here’s how economist and friend Adam Smith described Hume’s final days in a letter to Hume’s literary executor, William Strahan;
‘The placid, even cheerful death of so prominent an irreligious figure drew a great deal of public attention. Crowds assembled outside his house waiting to hear if he would change his mind about the improbability of an afterlife once death came a-knockin’.’
After his burial, his friends stood guard at the grave site, pistols cocked and torches aloft, for eight days and nights to ensure his grave would not be desecrated or interfered with. It’s said that some of the curious hid behind gravestones to see if the Devil himself would come and spirit away the man James Boswell dubbed “the Great Infidel.”
By 1778, Adam’s vision of Roman-inspired cylindrical mausoleum much like those found on the Appia Antica, complete with pre-fab decay, had been construction over Hume’s burial spot and an adjacent lot bought by the philosopher’s brother John. Robert Adam used unpolished masonry and rough ashlar to convey the impression of classical antiquity. Over the doorway was the simple inscription Hume had requested: “DAVID HUME, NATUS APRIL. 26. 1711. OBIIT AUGUST 25. 1776” At some point before 1813, for reasons lost in the mists of time, someone replaced the Latin “NATUS” with “BORN” and “OBIIT” with “DIED.”
After that, some more wording was added even less in keeping with Hume’s vision. Hume’s nephew, a famous jurist also named David Hume, erected a memorial to his wife Jane Alder after her death in 1816. Her name was inscribed on funerary urn in a niche about the door and captioned with:
“Behold I come quickly Thanks be to GOD which giveth us the victory, through our LORD JESUS CHRIST.”
Somewhere between then and 1820 yet another inscription was added just below the tablet, this one noting that the tomb was “Erected in Memory of Him/ in 1778” because by then the mausoleum had become something of a family vault, so its original purpose needed reiterating. During the mid-19th century, a metalwork cross was erected on a plinth above the keystone. The date 1841 is inscribed on it, perhaps indicating when the cross was added, perhaps in memoriam of Hume’s nephew David who had died in 1838. The cross was gone by the 1880s.
With Adam’s incorporating decay into the original design, plus all the later activity, plus the passage of time, Hume’s mausoleum was in dire need of cleaning and maintenance. The City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh World Heritage, plus a of private donors, pulled together to sponsor a a proper conservation of the mausoleum in 2011, the 300th anniversary of Hume’s birth.
Conservators focused on clearing vegetation and mortar pointing to replace crumbling mortar with fresh, durable lime. Particular attention was paid to the decorative elements on the cornice, architrave, and frieze around the top of the structure.
A spokesman for Edinburgh World Heritage said: “The Hume mausoleum is of great importance to the city and Scotland. Designed by the famous architect Robert Adam to commemorate the nation’s foremost philosopher, it neatly encapsulates Edinburgh’s history as a city at the heart of the Enlightenment. This sort of conservation work is essential to keep the building in good order for the future, and to encourage more people to appreciate the value of the city’s historic graveyards.”
This was accomplished for the bargain price of £5,000, I think he would have approved.

Day of Mountains, Rivers and Lakes
It was a wet and miserable start to the day as we left Strahan for Hobart and to be honest it didn't improve that much although as we moved east the showers became less frequent with decent patches of sun in between, though it was still quite chilly.
We stopped at various viewpoints along the route initially in Queenstown, a copper mining community in a pretty desolate landscape quite poignantly shown by Iron Blow lookout which basically shows a blasted rock area now lake, just east of the town and we did see Horsetail fall across the valley in the misty morning. The landscape away from the towns remained quite thick rainforest and pine areas though we did emerge on to an upland moorland area which could have been anywhere other than for the fact there were wombat and wallaby road signs every now and then. Our first walk was to Nelson Falls, a 20 minute or so walk through the rainforest to a fairly sizeable falls and a little latter we walked to the Frenchman's Cap suspension Bridge on the Franklin River which was quite fun to cross one at a time.
After this we emerged into more grassland and farming areas punctuated by rivers and lakes such as Lake King William, Bronte Lagoon and Bradys Lake and there were also a number of Hydro power plants on the way and signs for dams too. When we passed through Gretna there was a bright blue tree in a field and looking this up subsequently this is the 11th tree in Tasmania to have been painted Blue by arborists in order to stimulate discussions about mental health. It made a talking point anyway.
We arrived at our hotel in Hobart, right in the centre about 3pm checked in and walked to the harbourside for some groceries and then to a wine bar for a drink and a sharing platter. We then walked along the harbour but with the weather looking dodgy and spitting with rain we turned back and at this stage I managed to fall flat on my face over a raised parking kerb. I didn't bounce well and my camera even less so, but it seems to still be working and Andy now knows why I brought screwdrivers and gaffer tape with me - insurance claim later me thinks!
Bruised and battered we went back to the hotel to mend both camera and body as I ache now.......

Reach me down my Tycho Brahé,—I would know him when we meet, When I share my later science, sitting humbly at his feet; He may know the law of all things, yet be ignorant of how We are working to completion, working on from then till now. Pray, remember, that I leave you all my theory complete, Lacking only certain data, for your adding, as is meet; And remember, men will scorn it, 'tis original and true, And the obloquy of newness may fall bitterly on you. But, my pupil, as my pupil you have learnt the worth of scorn; You have laughed with me at pity, we have joyed to be forlorn; What, for us, are all distractions of men's fellowship and smiles? What, for us, the goddess Pleasure, with her meretricious wiles? You may tell that German college that their honour comes too late. But they must not waste repentance on the grizzly savant's fate; Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night. What, my boy, you are not weeping? You should save your eyes for sight; You will need them, mine observer, yet for many another night. I leave none but you, my pupil, unto whom my plans are known. You "have none but me," you murmur, and I "leave you quite alone"? Well then, kiss me,—since my mother left her blessing on my brow, There has been a something wanting in my nature until now; I can dimly comprehend it,—that I might have been more kind, Might have cherished you more wisely, as the one I leave behind. I "have never failed in kindness"? No, we lived too high for strife,— Calmest coldness was the error which has crept into our life; But your spirit is untainted, I can dedicate you still To the service of our science: you will further it? you will! There are certain calculations I should like to make with you, To be sure that your deductions will be logical and true; And remember, "Patience, Patience," is the watchword of a sage, Not to-day nor yet to-morrow can complete a perfect age. I have sown, like Tycho Brahé, that a greater man may reap; But if none should do my reaping, 'twill disturb me in my sleep. So be careful and be faithful, though, like me, you leave no name; See, my boy, that nothing turn you to the mere pursuit of fame. I must say Good-bye, my pupil, for I cannot longer speak; Draw the curtain back for Venus, ere my vision grows too weak: It is strange the pearly planet should look red as fiery Mars,— God will mercifully guide me on my way amongst the stars.
