Happy National Dictionary Day!

Although the day was introduced to honor the birthday of American lexicographer Noah Webster, we are more interested in his innovative predecessor Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). Johnson was an English writer with credits as a poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. In 1746, he was approached by a group of publishers to create an authoritative English dictionary and agreed, boasting he could complete the dictionary within three years. In the end, he single-handedly completed the task within eight years utilizing only clerical assistance. 

Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language was first published in London by noted Scottish printer and publisher William Strahan on April 15, 1755. While certainly not the first dictionary, it was groundbreaking in its documentation of the English lexicon providing not only words and their definitions, but examples of their use. Johnson accomplished this by illustrating the meanings of words through literary quotes, often citing Shakespeare, Milton, and Dryden. He also introduced lighthearted humor into some of his definitions, most notably describing a lexicographer as “a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original and detailing the signification of words”. Of equal amusement, oats are defined as “a grain which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people”. 

A Dictionary of the English Language was published in two volumes with volume one containing A-K and volume two L-Z. Its pages were 46 cm tall and 51 cm wide, and it is said that outside of a few special editions of the Bible no book of this size and bulk had been set to type and that no bookseller could print it without help. Johnson’s dictionary was the pre-eminent dictionary for over 100 years until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1884. Despite some criticism about his etymology and orthoepic guidelines, Johnson’s dictionary was tremendously influential in its methodology for how dictionaries should be constructed and entries presented, casting a shadow over all future dictionaries and lexicographers. 

Several of the words in Johnson's dictionary were painstakingly defined. "Take" has 134 definitions running 8,000 words over 5 pages.

Special Collections holds a facsimile reproduction of Johnson's dictionary, published in 1967 by AMS Press of New York.

It’s Harry talking to GMA. But like I want to just ask Harry why it’s possible that life for his brother, who is heir, is “survivable”. Why is Harry any different. He’s made it different because he’s such a whiny asshole, that’s why the press will come for him. And btw Harry the press can still come for you even if you live in America. It’s called the internet you moron.

I wish someone would point out to him that HE is the one that's making it "unsurvivable." Since mid-December they've been on a media blitz w/ reality show, book, interviews, magazine covers.

If they want to live a quiet life of anonymity where no one has anything to say about them, they can do that! Think of ALL the royals who live that life... like, literally all of them. Even William and Catherine who are by FAR the most popular royals still live an incredibly private life. We never hear about anything they do privately. FFS they made 2 of Catherine's cousins godparents to their children and we were like "omg right, we forgot Catherine has a whole family that they're close to" because NO ONE in the Waleses orbit talks to the press, the Walses don't talk to the press, they don't leak shit... they just get on with their lives. And - perhaps more importantly - they play the game. "Sure, you can have a first day of school pic and a birthday pic of the kids, now leave them alone for the year."

Someone pointed out that the Walses USED to do a holiday photo for the reporters like Charles and Diana did - ya know, the cute family ski trip photos. But when the reporters got greedy and nasty about it (criticizing something about the trip) the Walses were like "Okay, no more ski trip photos then - sorry you blew it."

Did the press attack them for it? No. It made the press GET IN LINE because they were like "Oh, if we mess up they're going to slap our wrist a little." But the Walses didn't overreact. They didn't take away all access forever, they didn't end "the agreement" that keeps the press in line - they just tweaked the rules.

‘GOOD MORNING AMERICA’ RANKS AS THE NO. 1 MORNING NEWSCAST FOR 12 STRAIGHT YEARS SEASON TO DATE 

‘GMA’ Increases Viewership Over Previous Week in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, 2nd Highest of the Season

“Good Morning America” averaged 3.097 million Total Viewers, 642,000 Adults 25-54 and 422,000 Adults 18-49 for the week of Nov. 20, 2023, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  

“GMA” saw gains over the previous week in Adults 25-54 (+6% - 642,000 vs. 605,000) and Adults 18-49 (+6% - 422,000 vs. 399,000).  In fact, “GMA” delivered 7-week highs (since w/o 10/9/23) with its 2nd -best numbers of the season. 

Season to date, “GMA” (3.054 million) is ranking as the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers for the 12th straight year — since the 2012-2013 season. “GMA” is leading NBC’s “Today” (2.829 million) by 225,000. 

During the week, “GMA” (3.097 million, 642,000 and 422,000, respectively) beat “CBS Mornings” (2.358 million, 447,000 and 273,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+739,000), Adults 25-54 (+195,000) and Adults 18-49 (+49,000). 

NOTE: Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, “Good Morning America” was retitled to “GMA-ABC” on Wednesday and was coded as a special on Thursday and Friday.  In addition, CBS Mornings” was coded as specials from Wednesday through Friday, and NBC’s “Today”  was coded as specials on   Wednesday and Friday.  All retitled and specialed telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. ABC’s and CBS’ weekly averages are based on two days (Monday-Tuesday), while NBC’s weekly averages are based on three days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). 

Emmy Award-winning “GMA,” featuring the anchor team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Michael Strahan and chief meteorologist Ginger Zee, airs live Monday-Friday (7:00-9:00 a.m. EST) on ABC. Simone Swink is the executive producer.

Season to Date, ‘GMA’ Stands as the No. 1 Morning Newscast in Total Viewers for the 11th Consecutive Year and Slashes Its Season Margin With ‘Today’ in Adults 25-54 to Its Closest Performance in 8 Years

“Good Morning America” ranked as the morning’s No. 1 newscast in Total Viewers (2.884 million) during the week of Sept. 5, 2023, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “GMA” beat NBC’s “Today” (2.728 million)by 156,000 Total Viewers.

“GMA” posted week-to-week gains in Adults 25-54 (+5% - 618,000 vs. 589,000) and Adults 18-49 (+4% - 395,000 vs. 379,000).

Season to date, “GMA” (3.156 million) is ranking as the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers for the 11th consecutive year. “GMA” is leading “Today” (2.819 million) by 337,000, increasing its lead from the same point last season (+42%; vs. 237,000) to its largest in 8 years ― since the 2014-2015 season.

In addition, “GMA” is slashing its season margin with “Today” in Adults 25-54 versus the same point last season (-65% – 11,000 vs. 31,000) to its closest performance in 8 years ― since the 2014-2015 season.

During the week, “GMA” (2.884 million, 618,000 and 394,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Mornings” (2.155 million, 459,000 and 278,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+729,000), Adults 25-54 (+159,000) and Adults 18-49 (+117,000).

NOTE: On Monday (9/4/23), “Good Morning America,” “CBS Mornings” and “Today” were coded as specials due to Labor Day.  In addition, “Good Morning America” was retitled to “GMA-ABC” on Tuesday (9/5/23) and Friday (6/8/23).  The specialed and retitled telecasts are excluded from the week and season averages.  ABC’s weekly averages are based on two days (Wednesday-Thursday), while CBS’ and NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday).
