Fear the Past: Zork Nemesis (Review)

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you might recall the old Zork text adventure games. 1996 saw the release of a game in the series that proved to be the much darker and serious version of the game. That game was the point and click adventure Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands.

While not having too much to do with the typical settings and lore of the other games in the series, Nemesis has the player as a member of an investigation team to the Temple of Agrippa in the titular Forbidden Lands. Four prominent alchemists of the Great Underground Empire have gone missing here and it’s up to you to figure out just what happened. However, things are not quite what they seem at face value. I played this game 24 years ago and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. As an adult, I found the game to have aged decently, though I now realize how narm-tastic the acting of the four alchemists is. 

While not exactly a standard horror game, the dark themes, especially a level and puzzle chapter concerning a mental hospital is still a bit jarring even 24 years later.  The game is available (and current operating system compatible) on Steam and GOG.
