Overall, I LOVED the book and I’m glad we got EvaJacks endgame! But it’s left me with a lot of questions…

How was Eva able to kiss Jacks without dying?

Where are Luc, Marisol, and Tiberius??

Why did Jacks need the apples??? The “answer” we got was so bland.

Where is our EvaJacks wedding?! It was foreshadowed! I need it!

Why was their first kiss so short and non-descriptive? 😭 TellaLegend got WAY more descriptive kisses and I was desperately waiting for that!

That’s my biggest questions and I’ll just be over here hoping that maybe Stephanie will put out a novella or something to fill in the little gaps.

Can't Lose You Too

A/N: SPOILERS AHEAD from A Curse For True Love so reader beware. This is a rewrite with content from Ch. 41. And Happy Birthday to our one and only favorite apple-eating scoundrel with unfair dimples!

    Glass shattered. He’d dropped the jar—and as soon as he did, the kiss took on new life. It felt like stars colliding and worlds ending. Everything was dizzying and spinning. He kissed her harder. She held him tighter, fingers bruising on the back of his neck before slipping into his soft hair.

    Evangeline never wanted to pull away. But she was starting to feel light-headed. Her eyes were closed. But she could see stars.

    “Little Fox—” Jacks’s panicked voice broke the kiss.

I'm all right, she said, or she tried to say. Evangeline couldn't quite get out the words. Her head was spinning too fast. The stars were spinning, too. Little constellations behind her eyes.

    Her legs gave out.

    “No!” Jacks cried.

    Then Evangeline felt his arms catching her as she fell. She tried to stand, tried to move, but her head would not stop spinning.

    “No!” Jacks screamed. “Not again!”

    He dropped to the ground with Evangeline in his lap. She could feel his chest shaking as he held her.

    Jacks—she thought his name. She couldn’t speak quite yet, but she could open her eyes again. The stars had left them and now the world was slowly  coming back to focus. First the sky, all indigo and violet. Next, she saw the tree, all glowing and gold.

    Then there was Jacks. 

    He looked angelic and anguished. His beautiful face was drained of color. Tracks of blood fell from his eyes down his pale cheeks. 

    “Don’t cry, my love.” She carefully wiped his tears with her fingers. “I’m all right.”

    She gave him a wobbly smile.

    His eyes went wide and as blue as a clear sky after a storm.

    “How is this…” he trailed off.

    It was a little endearing to watch. His sulky mouth gently parted as he seemed to forget how to speak.

    “I already told you. You are the love of my life. You are mine, Jacks of the Hollow. And you’re not going to be the end of me.”

    “But you were dying.”

    “No,” she said, a little embarrassed. “I just forgot to breathe.”

  Jacks stared at her for a long moment, mouth still agape in shock and disbelief but the bloody tears stopped and he was gripping her for dear life. She gazed back at him, caressing his cheek but it looked as though the poor boy was not processing anything. 

    It was too much and she understood why. Every other girl, except Donatella and now her, that had been in this position sadly succumbed to his kiss and didn’t get to rise from his arms again. The Prince of Hearts’ kiss of death was no more. 

    But the longer he remained motionless, she started to worry. “Jacks? Are y-”

    Before Evangeline could finish, he was cupping her cheeks and pressing kisses everywhere; her lips, her forehead, her temples, her jaw, her eyelids and eyebrows, the tip of her nose, the pink apples of her cheeks. She flushed at the sudden, unexpected show of affection which was entirely unlike him but took it happily all the same, letting him shower her with his sweet kisses. 

    When he finally stopped, giving her a final, long and lingering kiss on the lips, Jacks allowed himself another look at her, stroking the sides of her face gently as if she were a glass figurine, delicate and too fragile. He gazed at her with a sort of lost awe and hope, a shimmer of a bright future ahead, for once. Again, she tried to prompt him to speak. “Ja-”

Once more, he cut her off. He'd wrapped his arms around her tightly and buried his face into the crook of her neck, not wanting to face her. She also brought an arm around his upper back while the other went to his waist. They stayed like that for another few minutes. But she couldn’t resist.

    Jacks? She sent through their mind link as she tried peeking at him from the corner of her eye; he only shook his golden head in response. Evangeline tried to pull back slightly but he squeezed her tight in retaliation. Sighing quietly in defeat, the hand that until that point had been rhythmically rubbing up and down his upper back traveled to the nape of his neck, slipping into his hair and she mindlessly ran her fingers through his blond locks. 

    He let out a content sound and she smiled, continuing the motion. You’re not playing fair, Little Fox. 

    “I learned from the best,” she answered aloud. She felt him smile into the curve of her neck, pressing a kiss to her collarbone before he withdrew from his hiding spot. When he looked at her again, she saw a small mischievous grin but his eyes gave away the wariness he was clearly feeling. She brought her hand back to his cheek and he leaned into it, closing his eyes for a moment. Then they fluttered back open with sudden clarity.

    “Don’t do that again, please. I thought I lost you.”

    “I’m sorry,” she blushed in spite of herself. It was rather unfortunate that their first kiss was ruined by her dizzy spell but it was still just as swoon-worthy and perfect and sweet and lovely as she imagined. More. His fingertips brushed her jaw as he tilted her head up so they were face to face. He leaned forward and captured her lips softly; she cupped the back of his neck in return. 

    After they parted, he whispered, every word a caress, “Never again, Little Fox. Never again.”

    That we are in agreement, she replied silently. He leaned his forehead against hers, exhaling in relief with his eyes shut and a heartbeat passed, two before he spoke again. “I love you.”

    She smiled brightly, saying, “I love you, too.”

    “I’m never going to let you out of my sight.”

    “You make that sound like it’s a bad thing.”

    He pulled away and they were both grinning widely at each other, too stuck on the feeling of this newfound happiness to really do anything more. He loved her. She loved him. And it wasn’t doomed.

    The Archer and his Fox had found each other again.

    Jacks leaned down again and pressed his lips against hers, his golden hair falling into his eyes as he hugged her tight to him. Evangeline tangled her fingers in a fistful of his locks and pulled, getting lost in his all consuming kiss.

    Once upon a time, there was nothing but kissing, and everything was perfect. And then there was even more kissing.

A/N: I hope you all enjoyed that! This was a bit of a rewrite or rather, an elongation, of the first kiss from Ch. 41 in A Curse For True Love that was inspired by a review of the book from @thedrunkenreadersreviews. They mentioned their want for Jacks giving Eva relieved kisses all over when he realizes that she isn't dying from their kiss and I thought it was a cute idea so I added that on. One year and 30 days. i waited. impulsively,selfishly being the first to look up any new updates on the book, the title, a quote, a word? everything. all for it to end up like this AGAIN. it felt very rushed. and was sooooooooo underwhelming. eva had to always rush behind him like she had to do the work while he just gave up. i read another review saying he is the villain so wasn't he supposed to be the one not giving up,he should have been endlessly pursuing her/ so true, couldn't agree more.

JACKS changed all of a sudden in this book, he generally is flirtatious, kind and cruel+charming.but here in this one he isnt trying at all. he wasnt doing anything for her.i wanted him to apologise and plead for her forgiveness after she lost her memories after his wholerude ass tantrum at the arch.but he didn't, instead he sort of blamed her for losing her memories. isnt he resposible in the first place.he was not even involved in this book. he felt like a SIDE character.

EVERYTIME I SAW ASSOLO's pov i had to take a deep breath because it was gonna suck.i didnt wanna see aurora or Appolo. gosh were they annoying.

it had very magical writing. But Garber has written better. the plotline seemed bland to me since the previous book was a filler book[but now looking back i was too harsh on the previous book] and this one was just adding to the second book.

okay we readers have been waiting for these two to kiss for like three years. and she gave us what one page? maybe two? couldn't she have given us a wedding? an epilogue to the epilogue???? likeeee the epilogue was not a good epilogue. what about when she saw her vision, where she was gonna married in a place like the hollow in the first book in her dad's curiosity shop??? was this there in this acftl or did i just miss it?? cuz i feel like she was supposed to be adding that as the epilogue.

i am soooo pisssed bout the fact that she GAVE US BARELY TWO PAGES OF THEM BEING TOGETHER AND THATS IT ???LIKE WHATTT. AND lala deserved better like her dude Dane's alive. shouldnt she know about this shit?? the whole deal with castor and lala what about that?? what happened to Marisol or LUCIEN??

i cant believe reading this book has made me think the previous book was wayy better. jesus i have a newfound respect for the previous book as the plot was more involved,pacing and everything was better than this one. ughhhhhh so many elements missing.

EDIT:i just read the waterstone and B&N epilogues.

in the waterstone one why tf did the epilogue have to be about such a frivolous thing.whyyy eva do u want to be so naive? after everything Apollo had done she wants to set him free or sum shit.i swear i hate evangeline sometimes. but jacks stops herself from doing that. i don't know this felt very unnecessary and tedious to be an epilogue.

the B&Noble's one was more sweet and emotional. i liked it but my statement still stands. stephanie could have given us more EVAJACKS.

Things I wanted to see or at least get answers to but didn’t get:

-I wanted to see Eva and Jacks slow dance at least once ever since it was mentioned in Ballad :(

-I wanted a more drawn out scene in the one bed chapter. I felt like it was super rushed 😔 for example, it would’ve been nice to see them wake up in each others arms, feel all warm in cozy etc 🥰. On that note, I also wanted to see what exactly happened when he woke up next to Eva from Jacks pov.

-I wanted to see Eva and Lala beat the fuck outta Aurora, just like we saw Jacks kick Apollo’s ass at the end. I cheered when Lala called her a bitch lmao

-I wished Eva and Jacks first kiss was… different? I don’t know, something about it just didn’t hit the same. It feels like Ballad had more tension between the two of them than in this book.

-what about Lala and Chaos? Is that gonna be a thing? I would love for Stephanie to write a short little spin off on them. I bet the tension would be fun to read!!

-it looks like Chaos was able to stop his hunger from overpowering him when he saved Eva from Jacks but why did he slaughter house fortuna?

-what happened to Tiberius!?? Or Luc? Or Marisol? I wanna know where they all ended up

-does Eva ever write to Scarlett to let her know what went down in the North? I feel like with her nearly becoming Queen that would have been enough for Scarlett to reach out to her 🥴

-is Jacks still a fate? And if so, why? Or is the fact that he’s in love negate his powers since it turns him mortal?

-what great house did jacks belong to when Lyric was still alive? Or did he come from a peasant family? Was he an orphan too? What was his childhood like? Who taught him to be such a great archer?

-what happened to the broken heart scar on Eva’s wrist? Does she still owe him a kiss?

Okay, some acftl opinions under the cut, since I was asked. By no means all of them and they’re… a bit critical. Not here to ruin anyone’s day, please love it if you loved it, but I’m feeling kind of weird about this one

Obviously the HEAVIEST of SPOILERS FOR A CURSE FOR TRUE LOVE

Nothing was tied up except EvaJacks being together. Like! Good for them! But even that wasn’t even… satisfying. Luc? Done. Marisol? Gone. Castor out just MASSACRING PEOPLE. LaLa, neutral toward Dane. The Valors? Just out and about now after like a thousand years of everyone just knowing they were dead for sure. ALL of House Fortuna massacred and basically no one blinked an eye. Jacks apples? Who gives a shit.

Is Jacks mortal now? In theory yes but it was never… really remarked upon? He shouldn’t have his powers anymore, he shouldn’t be a Fate, he shouldn’t be immortal… but not a word of this was mentioned.

What… was the point in mentioned Lysander having the ability to mess with memories if he had nothing to do with any of this? Did Aurora like… distill his powers? Unlikely, as it feels truly unrelated. This is something Jacks, Castor, and LaLa knew- why did none of them bring this up in an effort to restore Eva’s memories? Lysander’s ability, if I’m not mistaken, was not mentioned at ALL in this book, despite it revolving around Eva not being able to remember anything

You want backstory on Jacks? NO. Was Jacks from a Great House? Literally any information on who he was pre Fate besides trying to help people? No. Nothing.

LaLa deserves her revenge against Aurora. No joke. Aurora not being punished whatsoever besides still not getting to be with Jacks (called everything about Aurora no joke). Aurora’s actions were UH kind of the worst by far. Especially when it’s turned around that Aurora didn’t even love Lyric? Y’all.

I know a lot of this ties into the happy for now idea but it was just TOO much. Stephanie Garber has talked about this being the last book in the world for the foreseeable future which drives me NUTS after the ending. The whole book felt so rushed and so weirdly all over the place? With a handful of awkward walk backs chalked up to “well the story curse” and clumsy dropped plots?

“Where do we go now?” “Wherever you want” uh, no, 1) what. What kind of ending is that? After all this? 2) I mean. So long as that doesn’t include the Meridian Empire, I guess?

Idk, I’ve got more, but being left with FAAAARRRR more questions than answers bothers the hell out of me. I’m in the process of listening to the audiobook post reading it and I’ll probably physically read it again when my standard edition from faecrate comes in but for now. Hm. Gonna let this stew for awhile. I will say though it gave me the drive to write the fairytale book I’ve been wanting to lol

honestly? the most upsetting thing about the book for me was that i felt like there was not enough payoff to the almost 3 books of tension and build up. so i don't understand when people say they dont mind the messy plot because what matters is the romance because its the focus of the story when that affected the romance too. i say that respectfully because i wish that was me, i really didn't want to be disappointed.

that was stephanies main job tbh, since the story is all about the romance

the kiss lasted like a few paragraphs? and it happened when jacks still didn't know if he would kill her so i still think we could have a kiss after he was sure she would not die like the "FINALLY" or "relief" kiss, the "ive been waiting for this for so long" kiss, you know? but it was just a chapter saying they kissed and thats it. and also i think they needed one in a private space (because, you know, apollo appearing at the end was annoying)

and something specific thats annoying about this is that tellajacks kiss in finale was better than what we got there like i created expectations, i KNOW stephanie knows how to do better, cmonnnn. after all that tension?

and not only about the kiss, we needed more time with them just being together, in peace. the beginning spent too much time with eva stuck with apollo and the ending was just one thing after another. at least one of the epilogues should be official but it stilk wouldn't be enough
