Horizon Machine Idea - The Abyssal
Lv. 55 Combat Class Aquatic Machine.
Real-World Megafauna: Mesonychoteuthis
The Abyssal, like the Floodrage, has been designed as a countermeasure to Quen naval supremacy. Imperial expansion has lead to mass systematic machine harvesting as the Quen empire and their need for resources has grown - the abyssal was created by HEPHAESTUS to impede the culling of aquatic machines and is able to destroy aquatic vessels with alarming speed and brutality.
The Abyssal has been built using some of HEPHAESTUS' newly-integrated Zenith tech that allows it to have a semi-decentralized nervous system. Dismemberment will not render the arms inert - they will reanimate after a brief period and can be reattached by the abyssal using Zenith nanotech if left alone for too long. Any dismembered limbs or removed parts must be damaged beyond functionality as quickly as possible.
The Abyssal is armed with twin electrical flails, two crusher arms equipped with grinder saws, auxiliary shock coils, Purgewater jets, an adhesive jet that uses an electroconductive variety of machine adhesive, and a radar jammer. It uses two pairs of dorsal-mounted repulser turbines for propulsion and three-dimensional underwater mobility.
When the Abyssal has firm hold of a ship, it can divert power from its weapons systems to overcharge the thrusters, allowing it to drag vessels underwater.
Extremely dangerous.
Do not engage without a machine mount or ship-mounted heavy weaponry.

Okay actually this was super fun and I don't think I've ever done something quite like this before. It took a week on and off and gave me a chance to play around with a bunch of new painting tools. Still getting used to digital but - happy with some progress.

2ND-5 LOG 0004
Another strange thing happened today. I'm not sure if I, uh, imagined it?
So like... I have villagers around now, is the thing, maybe I should start with that. You know how villagers are. I rescued them from the vault, and at first, besides the fact they let me carry them, I thought, uh. Well. Villagers, right? Probably - but they aren't... right. I don't know. I'll uh... get back to you all on that. There's just something...
Anyway, that means I have iron production, and food, and also enchantments, which is good, because I wasn't entirely certain I could get an enchanting table out, uh. Easily. They aren't uncommon, I guess? Like, uh, they're around gilded chests a lot. In fact they're a good way to spot... anyway, the enchantments mean that I have stuff that doesn't break as easily, which is good, because...
So like... uh, after. I didn't meant to attach - you know, last time. I'm feeling better since last time. My island is noisier now. More crowded. You know, what with the village. But - I mean, I didn't - I know I can attach images now, though, so I can... I have a bunch of strange gear. It is far stronger than any armor I have ever worn, and the shield is strange and slows down my enemies. It makes me feel safer in vaults, though.
I'm dying a lot less. That's not the strange - okay. I said I'd explain the strange thing, right?
I saw a cat.
I mean, uh. I guess that's not that weird, right? Especially since I panicked, went to go try to figure out how to get fish in the middle of the void, and by the time I got back, it was gone. But uh... I mean... I don't know, man. I keep on thinking about the cat. I keep on thinking maybe, if a cat showed up, uh, something... something else might? Not just a cat. But even just another cat.
I, uh - I mean, cats don't always, uh... they sense something off about me. I guess, haha, the way I sense something off about... but cats don't always like me, but that doesn't mean -
If I see a cat again I'm naming it Boots, I think. I might not see a cat again. I don't know. It left.
But honestly, between the coconut - uh, that'll make more sense with the picture, I don't - I mean it makes sense to call it a coconut but - you know. Between the coconut and seeing a cat for a moment, I feel more at-ease. More like I know what I'm doing. And it's odd, right? Because I lost the cat. I didn't get to keep it.
I saw it though.
And I mean, uh. Outside of villagers, falling squid, and the box of glow squid I made, most of the things I've seen for a while have been trying to kill me?
Not the cat though.
...you know, there are four types of altars in the vaults. I wonder which one I should thank for the cat, or which one I can ask to try to get me another one. It was cute, you know! I uh... I wouldn't mind...
Well. A question for later, maybe.
[ATTACHED: a picture of 2ND-5, callsign SECONDFIFTH, in front of a vault portal. they are wearing the druid helmet, the spiked chestplate, a coconut shield, iron leggings, and rusty raider boots. they are all enchanted.]

Ultimately, my verdict on "The Menu" is that it's phenomenal. It's a 5-star film (at least to me). It's visually stunning, it's suspenseful, it's sharp, it's tightly plotted, and it's even morbidly funny in spots. Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy are both incredible actors who are great in general, but when they get to interact with each other directly? Showstopping.
However. I wish people would stop using "it's just like Succession" as shorthand for "this is a story about rich people". Not just because it's a reductive way to view Succession, but because I think the comparison actually cheapens stories like "The Menu". "The Menu" and "Succession" are both stories about the wealthy, but they aren't just stories about the wealthy - and that's actually where their similarities end.
Once you get past that surface level, they have fundamentally different targets. "Succession" looks at how obscene wealth can exasperate already corrupted family bonds, how a culture that places excessive value on "traditional masculinity" has wreaked emotional havoc on several generations, and how capitalist structures allow the dysfunction of a few wealthy and powerful individuals to ripple out across hundreds of millions of lives. "The Menu" is about the relationships between the wealthy and service workers, the ways in which fundamental human needs like food have become a part of class conflict, and how elitism and pretentiousness form a culture that's ultimately toxic to art and creativity. Both are excellent stories!! Both are important critiques!! But to lump them both in as "eat-the-rich stories" ignores what places them above and beyond your average anti-capitalist satire
