alabama: “audemus jura nostra defendere”, trans. “we dare to defend our rights.” 4/10, not the worst but i don’t think it needs to be said. bit pretentious

alaska: “north to the future.” 7/10, i think it’s cool but i have no clue what it really means. higher points for not being religious (i think)

arizona: “ditat deus”, trans. “God enriches.” 0/10, keep that guy out of it

arkansas: “regnat populus,” trans. “the people rule.” 8/10, simple, love the idea, think it’s a great standing

california: “eureka”, trans. “I have found it.” 1/10, found WHAT???

colorado: “nil sine numine”, trans. “nothing without providence.” 0/10, i had to look up what this means and it is religious again

connecticut: “qui transtulit sustinet”, trans. “he who transplanted sustains.” -1/10, not only is this religious but it’s also not openly religious. pure evil

delaware: “liberty and independence.” 7/10, it’s boring, but it’s something

florida: “in God we trust.” 0/10, come on man

georgia: “wisdom, justice, moderation.” 6/10, sure

hawaii: “ua ma uke ea o ka ‘āina I ka pono,” trans. “the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” 10/10, yes!!! has something to do with their history!! it’s badass! makes me feel cool as hell to say!!

idaho: “esto perpetua”, trans. “let it be perpetual.” 1/10, it’s not religious and it is historical but i don’t like that it’s connected with the confederacy :/ (quoted from the president of the confederacy btw)

illinois: “state sovereignty, national union.” 0/10, directly associated with states’ rights to choose during the civil war

indiana: “the crossroads of america.” 7/10, i like that it’s more descriptive of the state than the government and it’s really funny to me that they identify like this. it’s like your friend doing something amazing and you going “you couldn’t have gotten there without me driving you to 7/11 that one time”

iowa: “our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” 6/10, i want to dislike this one because it’s so middle-of-the-road, but it does have some state history behind it (has to do with their fight to become a state) so it gets some points for that

kansas: “ad astra per aspera”, trans. “to the stars through difficulties.” 9/10, cool, connected to what they said about the state in its history, seemingly unreligious. point docked for it going to kansas and therefore being a bit pretentious more than anything

kentucky: “deo graham habeamus”, trans. “let us be grateful to God” AND “united we stand, divided we fall.” 0/10, why do they get TWO??? first one is religious, and the second one is unoriginal. if it were just the second one i would give it the benefit of the doubt but come on

louisiana: “union, justice, and confidence.” 4/10, i don’t think louisiana should be confident about anything but i do appreciate self-love

maine: “dirigo”, trans. “i direct.” 5/10, more than california because it’s slightly less confusing but i really don’t know what they mean by this

maryland: “fatti maschi, parole femmine”, trans. “strong deeds, gentle words.” 9/10, i fucking love this. i know very little of maryland so i’ll let them have this

massachusetts: “ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem”, trans. “by the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.” 8/10, it’s sick as fuck but massachusetts is a bit pretentious just taking this shit from someone else with no reason

michigan: “si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice”, trans. “if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” 9/10, this fucks. i love a motto dedicated just to the land. point docked because i do not feel the way this way when in michigan

minnesota: “l’étoile du nord”, trans. “the star of the north.” 7/10, cool that it acknowledges minnesota being the “northstar state” since it’s the northernmost state, but i don’t like that it’s in french. also kind of pretentious of us tbh

mississippi: “virtute et armis”, trans. “by valor and arms.” 2/10, cool if you’re a 7-year-old boy. if it’s based off the motto of lord gray de wilton they should’ve kept it “i trust in virtue not arms”

missouri: there are way too many states. anyway. “salus populi suprema lex esto”, trans. “the welfare of the people is the highest law.” 10/10, period!! i don’t think missouri stands by this tho

montana: “oro y plata”, trans. “gold and silver.” 6/10, i have to give it points for being a physical description of the state and also being historical (big mining state), but they really put all their coins in one bag with this one

nebraska: “equality before the law.” 10/10, apparently reflects nebraska’s “willingness to extend suffrage to black Americans” so it’s good state history and i love what it stands for. keep it up nebraska (i know you won’t)

nevada: “all for our country.” 5/10, really have any historical importance, and it’s a bit vague. what is it that you’re doing for “our country?” what does “all” imply? really think they just threw something together last minute

new hampshire: “live free or die.” 9/10, sick as fuck and grounded in history. iconic is an overused word, but i gotta say this is iconic. metal as hell. point docked because it’s too associated with some weird political standings now

new jersey: “liberty and prosperity.” 6/10, boring as hell but sure. whatever

new mexico: “crescit eundo”, trans. “it grows as it goes.” 9/10, quote taken from a poem which is cool and i love that it makes me think of dick :)

new york: “excelsior!”, trans. “ever upward!” AND “e pluribus unum”, trans. “out of many, one” (as of 2020). 6/10, i was with kinda with them on the first one even though it seems like something they added last minute because i liked the excitement in it but the second one is kind of dumb… yeah, i guess you are one of many. feels like an obvious statement they didn’t need to add on in 2020

north carolina: “esse quam videri”, trans. “to be, rather than to seem.” 4/10, i think it’s okay but i don’t know what it has to do with north carolina

north dakota: “liberty and union, now and forever, one and inseparable.” 6/10, cool reference to U.S. history but it’s kind of a mouthful and i don’t think i would be able to memorize it

ohio: “with God, all things are possible.” 1/10, one point given because it makes me think of the iasip quote

oklahoma: “labor omnia vincit”, trans. “hard work conquers all things.” 4/10, once again i like that it’s a reference, but i have no clue what oklahoma has to do with this motto

oregon: “alis volat propriis”, trans. “she flies with her own wings.” 7/10, “she” being oregon’s “independent spirit.” i think it’s a sick ass motto but oregon is thinkin of themselves too highly here

pennsylvania: “virtue, liberty, and independence.” 4/10, the lack of originality is getting tiring but i guess it shows some values or something

rhode island: “hope.” 2/10, are you even trying? come on

south carolina: “dum spiro spero”, trans. “while i breathe, i hope.” 6/10, it’s inspiring i guess but i seriously do not understand why this would be associated with south carolina. i swear i’m not an advertising major or anything

south dakota: “under God the people rule.” 0/10, we are OBSESSED with this guy here. WHY do we need states to be associated with religion

tennesse: “agriculture and commerce.” we’re coming to the very simple mottos now. 4/10, i feel it’s redundant but i guess it meant something to them when they made it

texas: “friendship.” 10/10, it’s basic and unoriginal but it’s so fucking funny that i have to give this one to them. i do NOT think of friendship when i think of texas

utah: “industry.” 1/10, what the hell is this? one point for not being religious but what the fuck

vermont: “stella quarta decima fulgeat”, trans. “may the 14th star shine bright” AND “freedom and unity.” 7/10, i like the first one because it directly references vermont but the second one is just unoriginal and sad. why have a motto if it’s gonna be like that

virginia: “sic semper tyrannis”, trans. “thus always to tyrants.” 7/10, sick as hell. three points deducted because it once again has nothing to do with virginia, but it really is a sick ass motto

washington: (unofficial) “al-ki”, trans. “bye and bye.” 10/10, very specifically refers to the history of washington, which was first called “new york alki”

west virginia: “montani semper liberi”, trans. “mountaineers are always free.” 9/10, i want to dislike this because it feels so unrelated, but i love it. i love what you have going on here, west virginia

wisconsin: “forward.” 1/10, seriously?

wyoming: “equal rights.” 9/10, similar to nebraska, this motto came about because wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote. apparently this was because granting women the right to vote would make them have enough voting citizens to be granted statehood though, so point deducted for that

Content warning: swearing, mentions of marijuana use, pothead terms, a bit of self-insert, another awkward ending (?) you should know me by now, probably spelling mistakes, a bit rushed idk

A/N: I don't think I wrote any specific descriptions of the OC being black but that's how I picture her and in future chapters, she will be described as such anyway.

Yes I named her Jackie Brown while listening to Jackie Brown lol

Jackie doesn't have a lot of friends, she was lucky for the two that she did have in her life, however, one moved out of the city and the other one is usually busy with her husband and kids. Now she felt like she was back at square one. She wasn't good at this. Which sounded stupid because she was twenty-three, what adult doesn't know how to make fucking friends? But it was harder than a lot of people thought.

If Jackie made friends it was usually from school or small social gatherings that her friends would usually drag her to, and help her get out of her "bubble" but now she didn't have that anymore. So what was she supposed to do?

Her life was getting boring, it was dull, all she did was work at the diner downtown and come home just to roll up and smoke. Even smoking by herself was getting boring. She needed company, she thought she could cruise through life on her own but she needed a companion— someone to vent to and laugh with, someone she could cry to and go to the movies with.

She sighed lighting her freshly rolled joint, her head lolled back onto the couch as she blew out a thin puff of air. Frank Ocean's channel ORANGE album quietly playing in the background. And even with the music, it was too quiet. Her mind wandered, thinking, if there are dating apps... shouldn't there be friendship... apps?

Well, now she was curious. Jackie picked up her phone, clicking on the App Store, her fingers typing in 'friendship apps'

This is so stupid.

She scrolled as a lot of them were catered more to friends with benefits and random hookups. And then she found one.

F•R•I•E•N•D•S™️

She laughed through her nose, the title reminding her of the show Friends. She says 'fuck it' as she clicks download and it's only seconds before the tiny icon is on her home screen. The process for signing up is the same as any other app, you put your name, and age, fill in a bio (if you so choose) and upload a picture or two or three of yourself. Her joint rested between her lips as she concentrated her fingers on the keyboard putting in her information.

She cringed at the weak advertisement that was her bio but it would have to do for now, it was time to pick a few photos. She swiped through her album, though it wasn't a dating app and her pictures technically didn't require any effort, she still wanted to select her best ones. After intense searching, she chose three that felt explained her personality well and also made her look good. She shook her head at herself.

This is so stupid.

But she clicked 'done' and was brought to a mini tutorial on how to use the app. Press the plus sign when you want to add them or the 'x' when you don't and their profile will vanish into the abyss. And so, for the next ten minutes, that's what she did. She added a lot of people, men and women, but mostly women. She got a lot of matches out of them and a few of the girls seemed genuine, the men though...ew, to them this was just another hookup app and she received a few unsolicited pictures and lewd messages right off the bat, not even a 'hi' or 'hello' first. Typical.

Her joint was done, one last drag and she flicked the end onto the concrete, smushing it with her foot. She scrolled and swiped, clicked and responded to messages in her time outside on her swinging bench. The cool night breeze brushing her bare legs sent a shiver through her body but she didn't really mind it, this was the best time to smoke and be outside, the cold let her know Autumn was near. Ugh, her favourite season.

She hummed along to the music that was still playing in the background, blowing raspberries, her thumb starting to tire at her mindless scrolling until the pad of her thumb stopped on one guy's profile;

Fezco, 25. I regret downloading this.

She let out a slight titter at his bio because she had the same feeling. She went through his photos. He was cute. Sky blue eyes that could hypnotize you, freckles scattered all over his face, he sported a buzz cut and from certain angles, she noticed a scar starting at his hairline and ending just above his ear and oddly enough it completed his look. He had a ginger-coloured beard and in the very few photos where he smiled, she noticed a little gap in his teeth which, again, was cute.

Jackie didn't know what it was but she couldn't pass him by, fingers crossed in hopes that he wasn't a weirdo like the others, she sent him a friend request.

She looked upper left corner of her phone and noticed the time, it was nearing 1 a.m, she silently thanked the gods that she didn't start work until 4 p.m. but cursed them in the same breath that she'd be the one closing. She turned off her phone and shoved it in her pocket. She headed inside and locked her patio door, her feet pattered against the hardwood floors of her home. She turned off all the lights and headed upstairs. She yawned, the Indica starting to kick her ass.

She quickly brushed her teeth and swished around some mouthwash, and finally, she was in her cozy bed. She set an alarm, no doubt she wouldn't wake up until early afternoon. Before closing her eyes she plugged in her phone, the bright screen causing her to squint as she looked at a notification.

Redd felt a weird sensation in her chest, spreading down to her stomach. Her thumb wandered over the notification debating whether to click it or call it a night but her faded state made her mind up for her.

Fezco: What's up, Miss Jackie Brown? Is the position for a smoking buddy filled yet?

She smiled softly.

Jackie: Eh, there's still room for one more.

Fezco: Any strain in particular?

Were they really about to have a whole conversation about weed strains?

Jackie: I'm not picky, I just smoked some Girl Scout Cookies.

Fezco: Oh shit, okay. Well if you're serious about a smoking buddy, I could have a blunt with your name on it. If you're cool with that.

She found herself... giggling?

Jackie: Yeah I'm cool with that.

There was a small pause, three dots popped up indicating he was typing his reply but suddenly they disappeared, then reappeared and disappeared. Her mouth twisted figuring out what she'd say, this is what she hated the most, she ran out of conversation material quickly.

Jackie: Why are you still on here if you regret downloading it so much?

Fezco: Uh, I'm not really good at making friends. It's just me, and my girl Rue... but then she got a girlfriend and I don't see her much anymore.

Jackie: Omg me too!😂

Suddenly, she wasn't sleepy anymore, her conversation with this Fezco guy was keeping her wide awake. Her fingers tapped aimlessly as she answered and asked questions, this was the easiest way she'd ever gotten to know anyone, hiding behind a screen was her forte and she was thriving right now.

Jackie: So... his name is Ashtray? For real?

Fezco: lol yeah. I don't know, he always had his hand in our grandma's ashtray, so she stuck him with the name.

She couldn't lie to herself, it was a pretty cool name. She checked the time, now it was nearing 4 a.m. What the fuck. She yawned, her eyelids quickly weighing down with repressed slumber.

Jackie: It's late man, I got work tomorrow and I'm not trynna fall asleep on the clock lol

Fezco: No worries ma, you go make your money.

Jackie: Hm, I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Fezco: I'll be here.

Jackie: Goodnight.

Fezco: Night.

She finally turned off her phone and placed it on her nightstand, she turned on her side and got in a comfortable position to sleep in. Her eyes closed and the corner of her mouth twitched, forming into a small smile. She felt a bit of pride for finally making a friend.

I've decided to keep writing for Fez, I like him too much and I like writing about him too much to just close it. Plus I was reminded that it's just the character I'm not actually writing about/for Angus. So I will continue to write for my favourite freckled boy.

hi jo! firstly, thank you for being such a positive kind influence in the community, you deserve all the love!

secondly, pls don’t feel pressured to answer if you wouldn’t like to, genuinely!

but i was wondering if you have any advice for writers on here that severely lack getting feedback from readers. i can’t help but feel extremely discouraged receiving virtually no comments (no matter how small) about my works when i post them. it’s a bit disheartening and it’s starting to affect my confidence in my writing, especially when numbers/notes don’t mean anything to me. i know that creativity and skill is not reflected by any parameters on social media whatsoever, but i just can’t help but self-doubt when i feel really proud about a work yet receive no feedback.

I shall be completely honest, I am not entirely sure how to answer or what answer I can provide. but as always, I shall give it my best go:

getting people to engage is a tricky thing, and something unfortunately you can’t make happen. on some occasions, it’s instant and with others it takes time. I know stories that have had so much interaction in the comments but then on others there’s been none—and they’re written by the same person. equally, even some of my pieces get very few comments and then others get a lot. so it’s difficult.

my first advice on what you can do to help is consider making sure your piece indicates what you’d like someone to do. sometimes people are scared/nervous, because they don’t want to do it wrong. so if you haven’t, adding a simple “If you can let me know your thoughts in the comments, be much appreciated” shows an indication that you warrant that kind of feedback.

if you’re already doing that and still struggling, I recommend seeing if you can reach out to some friends or writers you admire and create a ‘buddy’ group. this way you can share amongst one another your works, give each other feedback (and also then scream at one another about plots and characters). by creating a circle for yourself, it can make it feel less like you’re shouting into a void, and at least then if interaction is slow, you know there’s someone more than you who is invested in your story. if that’s something you feel would benefit you.

I had a group like this for a different thing and it was ahhhmazing. we bounced off one another, but we were also one another’s cheerleaders (and that’s such a nice feeling).

lastly, you love your story, right? remind yourself of that. something I’ve told a friend to do is before they upload and share it, copy and paste quotes or passages that they love from their work. put it in a fresh document somewhere just for you. and, when you begin to feel disheartened, remember the beauty in which you created. put it in a cool font, add it into a graphic (if you make them) or just have it in a format that tells your brain it isn’t on tumblr or where else you post.

I know it’s cliche, but the person who has to love your work first, is you. and while I know it’s disheartening (like honestly, you’re not alone in it), and unfortunately there isn’t a spell I can cast or a bit of helpful advice that I can offer to let you know what makes people interact.

and while I know I said this on the “be kind” post, but I like the phrasing. you just haven’t found your people, and that takes time. and by that I mean, the people who love your work, the words, the places, the descriptions you create—not just the character or fandom.

again, I am not entirely sure if this has been helpful. I feel i give such poopy advice and I’m so sorry if it is. but just know it’s okay to feel whatever you feel, just don’t let it smush out your flame (if you can help it) 🩷✨

Salmon Run: Next Next Wave

Been theory crafting on what’s in store for Salmon Run in the next 5 seasons of Splatoon 3, before we start getting news of the next season. Feel free to tell me I’m expecting too much. - Also this contains info on previous data mines.

I imagine every other season will add a new map, meaning we should get a new map with a new gimmick next season and in seasons 6 and 8. I expect a total of 3 maps will return from splatoon 2, so that only leaves 1 more to return, which for spoilery reasons I think will be Ruins of Arc Polaris in season 6 or 8. With 2 new maps with new gimmicks being added to make 7 maps overall. Although I can see one of the “new” maps being a redesign of Saltspray Rig from Splatoon 1. Though I’m not sure they would add that next season just to keep people guessing as to whether it would return as a regular map as it, Urchin and Bluefin are the only maps from Splatoon 1 that have not returned. But I also can’t see the final map not being a brand new one. So who knows? While we’re on maps though, I think it would be cool if in addition to Saltspray being reworked as an SR map, that Salmonid Smokeyard got reworked as a regular map. I think like Saltspray it was very unpopular, and I can see that mirroring the map to add another set of raised hills with propellors between them the other side of the low tide area could work, or adding a third hill and having the bases either side of the middle one could also make a decent map layout. Onto King Salmonids, I think everyone is expecting we have 7 in total due to the “7 red rings in the sky” though I’m unsure we will definitely see 7 in this game, or if that’s a 4-5 this game and then up to 7 in the next game. I think if we truely are getting a new one each Big Run though, then we need one a season for 7 in total, but I can also see them alternating and new King Salmonids only coming in odd numbered seasons. We do have some hints as to what we may be getting in game though, as there are stickers for COHZ and ORBRS, and some unknown ones which could be flat (FLT), whirlpool (WHPL) and whatever LGF8Z could be, and it’s likely more stickers will come in updates too. I’ll come back to these though. In a previous data mine there was hints at a further 4 regular boss salmonids being added to the game, with the titles "Balloon", "BigBalloon", "Ghost", and "Wheel". I myself am iffy on whether these would be regular salmon bosses, King Salmonids, or something akin to grillers/mudmouths/chinnooks and only being in special waves. From the description BigBalloon could be Horrorboros as it was described as having large balloon explosions and travelling on a rail. I can also see that a King Salmonid could spawn it’s own new salmonids with new properties which could be what we are seeing here too. Though I feel Balloon would have been tied to BigBalloon in this case. (although maybe it is just Horrorboros’ bomb?) Ghost is hinted at having a toxic mist like effect, and Wheel may be related to the above Whirlpool mention. I would be surprised if we got regular bosses in an update though, it feels like if there were to be any they would be in a new mode, or wait until Splatoon 4. I think if we are getting a King Salmonid every season, then it’s still likely that in the odd numbered seasons we see a new mode added instead. We just had Eggstra work for season 3, and there was an Underground and a Pair mode datamined previously. After Eggstra work, I’m not gonna lie, I have low expections for these bringing anything that new and fresh to the game, though I have to say Pair needs to be more than just a 2 player mode! Underground is reportedly just a hard mode where salmonids may move faster and have higher health, but sometimes drop giant gold eggs worth 5 each. This sounds cool, and I can see it being used to have 2 maps in rotation at once, but considering so few people can handle Hazard Level Max currently, an even harder mode doesn’t feel like it benefits the majority of players, and would probably just make finding games harder at HLM. I imagine these modes would just run on the standard maps, but I’d love it if these came with a significantly changed win condition that isn’t just “put eggs in the basket”. Maybe if we had something like the basket hangs below the circling helicopter and we have to throw them in there, so it incentivises using the whole map to fight? For some smaller bits, I expect we will continue to get some sporadic gear updates in the Grizzco shop and for the Big Run maps to eventually become available in private games towards the end of the seasonal update cycle. I’d love to see Wahoo World flooded again. Now for some wilder speculation. I would love if the lines between salmon run and the regular modes started to get blurred a little more than just Big Run. We have heard that League might be bringing some unique gameplay when it gets added, and I’m personally hoping we get something like turf wars, but every 35-40 seconds two flipper floppers appear and target each team. Or if Pair turns out to not be a 2 player SR, and instead is 2 teams facing off to collect the most eggs. Something about tricolor having 3 teams, just makes me feel like a 3 way team game where one team is salmonids needs to happen somehow. And on a tricolor topic, wouldn’t Sockeye Station make for an interesting tricolor map? Another king of the hill type map like Scorch Gorge just was. It would also be nice if the ranked modes got a little more love and concept blurring in general. Like SR bosses draw inspiration from some of them, but what if we just straight up had a tower we had to ride laps around Marooners Bay’s ship while Salmon are on the boat attacking down on you instead.
