I’m thinking today about Civilization: Beyond Earth, aka “The Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri from wish dot com”. A spiritual sequel to the beloved SMAC without any of the spirit. The way I see it, Beyond Earth’s gameplay had multiple flaws:

* The starting factions had extremely minimal gameplay influence, which one you picked didn’t really mean anything.

* What resources you started near meant everything. You were planning to go down the Unity part of the tech tree, build big stompy robots? Too bad, there’s no Levistone nearby. You’ll choke down your Xenomass and go Harmony like RNJesus intended. Or you can reroll a new planet and hope for better luck next time … after you spend 10-20 turns finding out what resources you start with this time.

But the major problem with Beyond Earth was that it had big shoes to fill and didn’t really bother to try to fill them.

I mentioned before that the starting factions meant nothing in Beyond Earth? In SMAC they meant everything, because everything was voice acted. Build a recycling vat? Shen-Ji Yang will tell you “it is every citizen’s final duty to go into the tanks …”. Research the Industrial Base tech? Nwabudike Morgan says “Resources exist to be consumed, and consumed they will be!”. The faction leaders were given such depth of character, so well voice acted, that I can still quote them extemporaneously two decades later. SMAC had soul.

Beyond Earth, on the other hand, had one voice actor, a perfectly reasonable AI (human VA playing an AI, it has to be said in these stupid, stupid times) who stripped all the character and emotion from voice quotes attributed to Beyond Earth’s faction leaders. You could not get invested in them as characters - I can’t recall any of their names.

And still, if you win a science victory in Civ 6, you launch the exoplanet expedition, you win the game, and then there is no real sequel unless you want to choke down the bitter Xenomass of disappointment that is Beyond Earth … or return once more to the rolling pink hills and frolicking mindworms of Planet.

There’s space for some sort of near-future xenocolonization 4X game, is what I’m saying. The fallen torch is still there for some game dev to pick up. And I wish they would, instead of continually trying to retread the Civilization story as Old World, Humankind et al have done. Maybe there’s some game out there I’m missing. I hope so.

I don't know if anyone will see this, much less care, but here goes my dame design pet peeve.

I gate when a game's meta progression undermines its moment to moment gameplay. This effect games I do like (such as Age of Wonder) and one I do not (such as Heroes of Might and Magic), the auto-battle button is just too tempting. Often I know I won, because my army is a lot bigger and 5 hp on a scout isn't worth going into manual battle. A similar thing happens in many RTS Games, in Stagecraft 2 you improve a lot just by looking up and build and training to do it quickly. Rather than depth of strategy, SC2 asks you how quickly you make units and how well you can micro them.

Similar thing happens in X-COM, I never cared or the base building, but yet you have to do it. Do it poorly, and you will lose no matter what, do it well your units will be so OP strategy doesn't even matter.

I am halfway tempted to try making a game like X-COM or AoW, but it's a roguelike. You would go from battle to battle and try to keep your units alive. Quite possibly, with a limit of how many you can begin into a fight, so there will be added strategy of what you do and do not bring. A bit like what The Dragoness: Command of the Flame did for Heros, but with actually meaningful grid combat.

This however would be either too much work for my current skillets, not to mention server other games I want to make first.

Впрочем, давным-давно, в начале нулевых, релиз первых частей серии, в отличие от той же Age of Empires, вот вообще никак не откликнулся в душе многих фанатов жанра. Прошло время, 4X подзаглохли, и третья часть уже собрала вокруг себя неплохое коммьюнити, а дальше Paradox и спин-офф Planetfall показали, что серии-таки есть куда расти.

Из плюсов и критики, и простые игроки отмечают разнообразие всего, хорошую боевку и залипательность, сопоставимую с оригинальными гранд-стратегиями Paradox. В целом, это такие "Герои" нашего времени, но без сильно продуманной истории - исследовательская часть и борьба со случайными врагами проработаны на славу.

К минусам относят, как ни странно, масштабность боев, т.к. с развитием королевства типичная армия будет включать более 15 юнитов, и это уж слишком нагружает ваш мозг управленческими задачами. На старте многие также жаловались на вылеты каждые два хода, но вроде проблема не особо типичная, и если 2 мая мы начинали рейтинг с более 70% положительных отзывов, то к сегодняшему дню он перевалил 80%.

Цена ощутимая - 1 600 рублей, и не забываем, что дальше нас ждет вереница DLC.
