You want to know how underfunded aged care in New Zealand is?
We hired a new Registered Nurse in December. We had to offer her a very high pay rate because there are not enough nurses available, we advertised for 6 weeks and had 2 applicants. We are funded by the government to pay our staff at certain rates - they dictate how much we get paid for each resident we care for and what percentage of that goes towards staffing. We had to offer ten bucks over what we are actually funded for and have taken a huge hit just to be able to have a nurse which we have to have in order to legally run our business, don't get me wrong she's worth it but we have been robbing Peter to pay Paul ever since we hired her. We've just been offered a new government contract to 'to bring our nurse's pay-rate up to what they would get paid in a public hospital'. We will now be funded enough to be able to pay her 97 cents less than what we were already paying her. I mean it is $9.03 per hour more in our pockets, so I'll be able to keep paying her what she is worth AND have less creditors breathing down my neck, but we're still not actually being funded as much as it costs to provide the level of care their contracts stipulate that we are required to provide.
The big places can eat those costs. They make money because the government makes a deal with them; you can have this many apartments and villas and charge whatever you want for them BUT you have to have this many rest home, hospital, and dementia care beds and you can't charge each resident more than X for them. It doesn't matter if the funding doesn't cover the full amount it costs to provide those services because they're making money hand over fist on the apartments and villas which cost them next to nothing to run.
The smaller places (like us) don't have that option for making extra money to pay the bills. We get that X amount per resident and just have to find a way to make it work. But the government doesn't want to get rid of us because there are residents that the big places won't take. The ones who can't afford to pay for 'optional' extras, the ones who are problem children and would lower the tone of the place, the ones with 'complicated' families. If the the big places don't want to take a particular person they can say "Oh no we don't have any beds available right now. Those 10 empty rooms right there? Um. They're being refurbished! We can't put anyone in them.". The smaller places have to fill our beds just to pay the bills, so we'll take on the harder cases. The government is playing a constant game of 'we don't want to loose you but we're only going to pay you juuuuust enough to stay in business.'

"Confidence comes from belonging". Enormous 64 unit aged care facility otherwise known as an old folk's home under construction, going up to six storey's here. Formerly a church car park and a much smaller nursing home. That's your ageing population, right there. Leichhardt.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XXIII (federal 2022): Seniors United Party of Australia
Running where: NSW and WA (latter is below the line only)
Prior reviews: federal 2016, NSW 2019, federal 2019
What I said before: “This particular group are convinced that ‘seniors’ rights’ are being ignored—hence their entry to politics.”
What I think this year: In 2016, the Seniors United Party of Australia (SUPA) had next-to-no policy on their website. Six years later and their website is overflowing with content (not enough of which leans into the SUPA pun). The policies page is one of the lengthiest I have encountered this election and I could not possibly summarise it all. Let’s focus on their 2022 electoral platform and some of their core themes.
This is emphatically a party for the elderly, as the name would imply. They state an objective to “protect the future well-being of us all”, but this is fundamentally secondary to protecting the current prosperity of seniors. Some of it is reasonable—they have concerns about aged care staffing and living conditions, they want better and more affordable access to medical services, and they oppose cashless welfare cards. Interestingly, they are now taking a strong line on climate change and consider environmental sustainability to be the most pressing issue for government. Another interesting thing is that they now have an explicit statement on euthanasia, supporting laws for dying with dignity but with unspecified strict controls.
SUPA's economic policy emphasises the role of government in providing services and they are suspicious of both the motives and outcomes of privatisation. They want a whole range of publicly-funded services and benefits for seniors, yet they also want to pare down the ability of government to manage them by abolishing ministries and other parliamentary bodies. And in many senses Seniors United looks back to an idealised past—they want Australia to be the heavy manufacturing nation of their youth.
The further I dig into their policy, the less there is to like. The hostility to immigration that I noted in past years remains embedded in their policies against a “Big Australia”, and their attitude towards refugees is “well we’d like to help you but… not really”. They want to bring back National Service (good grief leave that thought bubble in the 1950s please). Their infrastructure policy has comical ideas of diverting major rivers and harnessing floodwater “to green our vast interior”. This is such a “say you support the Bradfield Scheme without saying you support the Bradfield Scheme” vibe. It's a foolhardy and destructive colonial dream that refuses to die.
Most comical to me is their proposal for tax reform. They propose either patching the current taxation system, particularly with higher taxes on foreign businesses and on mineral resources, or—and I promise I’m not making this up—abolishing literally all taxation except the GST, which would apply to all purchases and transactions. Somehow, they think this will tax the rich and provide relief to the poor on the silly notion that the rich buy and spend much more, rather than recognising that the burden of flat taxes falls disproportionately on the poor. The lowest earners, moreover, would lose all the protections of tax-free thresholds and be taxed much more than they are now on everyday purchases. It’s bad enough to repudiate a progressive taxation scheme, and this proposal is especially farcical.
I could keep going with other fields where SUPA make unhelpful, muddled, or unnecessary interventions. There are real issues in aged care, and SUPA are right to highlight those, but many of their other positions are dubious.
Lastly, Beth at b_auspol notes in her review that Seniors United are perhaps fortunate to be registered: they were deregistered for failing the old 500-members test but scraped back in after a lengthy appeals process and do not appear to have yet been retested under the new 1,500 threshold. I expect they will fail the new test and this might be my last time reviewing them, at least federally.
My recommendation: Give the Seniors United Party of Australia a weak or no preference

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).
given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)
but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

The last few years have been challenging, especially for Aged Care, due to an increasing crisis of staff shortages. With this understanding in mind, we decided to do something about it, by bridging the staffing gap in regional areas.
At Tarrays, all the team members are fully screened and individually selected, so that when we send them to you, they fit in as part of your team and provide the best quality care to the residents.

Guide to Elderly Care: Unveiling Comprehensive Solutions with CureEZ's Expertise
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In today's dynamic societal landscape, the aging demographic underscores an imperative need for specialized Senior care services. As individuals gracefully advance in age, their evolving needs necessitate tailored support systems to ensure sustained quality of life and holistic well-being. This blog endeavors to delve into the pressing need for aged care services in contemporary society, explore alternative avenues available, propose strategic recommendations for effective care solutions, underscore CureEZ's distinctive value proposition, and exemplify real-life success stories showcasing the efficacy of CureEZ's services.
The Imperative Need for Senior Care Services Today:
The current societal milieu manifests a profound and multifaceted need for elderly care services. With advancements in medical science facilitating prolonged life expectancy, there exists an expanding population of seniors requiring specialized care and attention. Moreover, societal shifts, including the prevalence of smaller familial structures and geographical dispersion, have precipitated a decline in the availability of informal caregiving networks. Consequently, there is an escalating demand for professional elderly care services to bridge this burgeoning gap. Furthermore, the prevalence of age-related ailments such as dementia, mobility impairments, and chronic illnesses underscores the exigency for tailored care interventions to optimize seniors' well-being and promote their independence and dignity.
Exploring Alternative Avenues for Aged Care Services:
Diverse alternatives exist within the spectrum of aged care services, each catering to varying needs and preferences. In-home care solutions afford seniors the luxury of receiving bespoke assistance within the familiar confines of their own residences, thereby fostering a sense of autonomy and comfort. This personalized approach allows caregivers to provide individualized attention tailored to specific requirements, encompassing assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, and companionship. Assisted living facilities represent another viable option, offering a structured environment where seniors can receive support with daily tasks while enjoying access to amenities and social activities. Meanwhile, nursing homes provide comprehensive care for seniors with complex medical needs, including round-the-clock supervision, skilled nursing care, and rehabilitative services. Additionally, the integration of technology-based solutions such as telemedicine and remote monitoring augments accessibility and convenience for both seniors and their caregivers, facilitating enhanced communication, coordination, and safety parameters.
