HI JO 💕 Read any good books recently? I just re-read White Noise (as Our Motherfuckin’ Boy will be starring in the movie adaptation) and loved it so hard. Also… my professor kink is now at an all time high. Updates from me: I embraced chaos energy and cut my own bangs, started a new job, and my houseplants are THRIVING ~~ now HOW THE EFF ARE YOU???

White Noise is currently sitting on my TBR shelf that is OVERFLOWING with books. It's a little daunting for me as I bought a used copy that someone blasted with highlighter marks and notes that do nothing but distract me.

I'm currently reading A Game of Fate by Scarlett St. Clair which is a STEAMY retelling of Hades and Persephone. It's a super easy world to follow, and my brain immediately places fucking Kylo Ren as Hades, so it's like I'm reading a physical copy of fanfiction lmao.

I am also reading Meaty by Samantha Irby, which is a hilarious and sometimes heart-wrenching collection of personal essays.

But recently finished books are as follows:

My boyfriend H, recently got me a spot in an art co-op where I am showcasing my handmade bone jewelry! I just got back from a short vacation in the city which was a nice relief from daily work at the library! And I stepped foot in the ocean for the first time in my life thanks to H, who when I wasn't looking, dove into a wave and brought me a rock that he felt was special.

It was the dumbest, cutest shit I have experienced.

It would’ve been easier to stick with his parents’ place in Kingsgate but Chase didn’t want to stay there anymore. He needed to live on his own and when it came to apartment searching, he looked in Westbrook for multiple reasons. One, it was fairly priced and two being it was close to Alex and the bar. That way Chase could help out and keep an eye out. It was a step out of his comfort zone being in a new place with lower income and Chase was having a hard time adjusting and learning everything about the area. He didn’t even know where the damn book store was and he had lived in Lanford his whole life. After cursing at himself he looked a near by passer. “Hi sorry- this is gonna sound so dumb but can you point me to the book store?” Chase asked with a welcoming smile.

when his mother had checked in with him to see how he was adjusting, the older woman hadn’t been able to help herself when she started talking about all the gossip that had gone around in new york. she was still grieving, but the creme de la creme of new york always found a way to relay information to each other, and so at one of the ladies’ clubs that his mother was part of, she’d gotten up to speed with the news that had been making its round. 

“oh, and em?” she said, using his nickname as she started talking in a hushed tone. “i heard lucas matthews’ oldest son was in a terrible car accident. apparently he was in a coma for two weeks! kathleen hawthorne even said he has amnesia. can you imagine?” she asked with a voice dominated by shock, and emerson could mentally see her fidget with the necklace she always wore. “isn’t it terrible? he’s in the hospital in lanford.” the woman sighed to show how sorry she felt for the matthews family, but emerson knew nearly all of her emotions were simply conditioned, learned by years and years of living among manhattan’s upper class. in other cases, emerson would simply express how shocking that news was and then move on, but not this time: he knew luke matthew’s oldest son. alexander and him had been friends when they were children, and even though it had been years since he’d seen the guy, it still drew his attention.

“he’s in the lanford hospital?” emerson repeated as he raised his eyebrows in surprise. “well, i’ll stop by today and see if i can go visit him.” a visit to alex would be partly to see him again, but also partly because emerson knew his mother would be waiting by the phone, eagerly awaiting news from emerson about the state of the guy so that she would have something to talk about at the next ladies’ council meeting. it took another few minutes before he could end the phone call with his mother, but once he hung up the phone, he got up from the armchair and prepared himself to go outside. he was behind on work already, but it was sunday, and sundays weren’t meant to be spent slaving away.

half an hour later, emerson had gotten the room number of his former friend from the receptionist at the hospital desk and made his way up to the fourth floor. it felt strange just walking in like that, as if he was breaking some kind of privacy barrier, but the door had been half-open, and it wasn’t like he could call beforehand: emerson hadn’t seen his friend since middle school. “alexander?” he called out as he stuck his head around the corner, walking in when he saw a young man sitting up in the hospital bed.

‘Are you Alex, Miss? Alex Lanford?’

The voice came to me upon a chill in the air, and it surprised me to hear my name. It was accented, not from the territory that surrounded home. There was a lilt this way and that in a way that had an educated flair to it - so it drew my eye up and away from the task at hand. For it I was briefly and silently glad. It was a frustrating effort with what I was doing, stripping leaves from harvested foliage compared to the earlier hours my parents, brothers, and I spent sweeping thickets for whatever we could find to add to food stores.

‘Aye,’ I answered before a grass cut hand lifted to push a strand of hair away from my face to better focus on this stranger before me. ‘That would be me. How do you do?’

‘Quite well, quite well.’ Came response. It’s owner shifted, moving from the glare of sunshine so I could see face at last. Clean cut, to match the voice, but his face was pointy. Almost fox-like. Green eyed, brown hair swept back with some sort of grease but not filthy. Neat clothes hardly touched by dirt of travel. A city man. Perhaps from across seas? I couldn’t tell. ‘May I have a word with you?’

‘Think you already are, mister. I have my hands full at the moment, but I can work and listen.’

The stranger crouched. His shoes crunched softly on stones, and his gaze met mine for a moment longer before it dropped with interest towards stalks I held. His closeness made me uneasy yet most folks did, though, if I didn’t know them. Always felt that way in the past and no doubt would continue to do so well into the future. Another leaf was gripped and torn to be put to the side. 

For a time the accented man was silent. Watching, contemplating what to say. Once he gathered his thoughts he opened mouth to speak once more. ‘My name is William. Me and mine possess an interest in your heritage.’

‘Heritage?’

‘Indeed. We keep track of things all about the civilized world, from politics to the trivial, as well as… the uniques we have written down from their travels into the Americas. That’d be you.’

‘I was born here, Mister William.’ I interjected with a tone of confusion. He quirked a subtle but knowing smile at me, arms folding neatly over knees. ‘Nothing special about me at all, ‘side from being a decent hunter.’

‘You downplay yourself, dear. You are hardly mundane and more like us.’ When giving him a look, William pressed on to further elaborate. His voice dropped as shoulders hunched in a bid to block his face from view of the few other people out and about, green eyes glittering in an almost unnatural way in the shadow he created. ‘You are more than human and I think you know that. More capable than most men, in strengths and senses. Do you agree?’

Leaning away from the other as he spoke my expression pinched. He was right but I’d be damned if I admitted to it, surely? I’d been taught at an early age in both literature and words that whatever abilities I’d possessed were unnatural. Unwelcome to folks. Punishable. The plants in my hands were forgotten in turn to focus on the man, head shaking in denial. ‘Sorry sir, I don’t know what you mean.’

‘No?’ Blinking the other knitted fingers together thoughtfully. ‘From what I’ve gathered in my brief time in this place is that you’re one of the most successful hunters out of the lot. Able to hold your own. That’s a few signs, and-’

‘Pardon,’ I interrupted, ‘Who is ‘Us’?’

‘Why, the Janus Order. Changelings.’

      The trip seemed to fly by, from the family man Darnell on his way home to Tulsa she’d been buying her pack of Marlboro’s and some jerky waiting for her friend Johnny who promised to take her far as Austin. But struck up a friendly conversation with the man and decided why not. 

    From Tulsa, she’d met Lucy; a college kid on break on her way back to Chicago; Lucy was fun, Lucy seemed scared and later told Alex she was worried her ex was following her; which was why she even considered taking the girl in at all. They listened to the radio the whole way, whatever was on. (Something happened to her dash, Alex had a bet it was Lucy’s temper.) A few nights with Lucy and a real desire to stay put; she liked the cold. Really, really liked the cold she found. 

     The cold never quit, mountains covered with snow, cities big and small and hole in the walls, this part of the country was proving it’s beauty. She’d used Lucy’s computer after the two watched a movie on a guy who found free rides through Craigslist, sometimes in favor of odd jobs sometimes by the heck of someone’s whim of an idea. Through that, they’d found Todd. Headed just south of her final destination, a small town in West Virginia, the name she couldn’t even recall but the map showed it was one step closer. So she went; a care package from Lucy (rape whistles, Doritos, coloring books, tampons, and a pay per day cell phone that Lucy’d scribbled her own number on and a picture of one of the One Directioners) 

   Todd was quiet. Which she didn’t mind. He gave her more time look, he even let her drive. It wasn’t even far but he was feeling down. A deer popped out and she almost screamed; she wasn’t going very fast; somewhere below 20 mph because she was scared of the snow and ice. She’d told him she’d done it before but that was a lie, it snowed in Santa Fe, but she’d only ever learned a stick and even then it was few and far between. She never needed a car, she never had a car. The snow was for her and the other kids in the trailer park to play in. 

    From Todd there was Dennis. Dennis. Just saying his name in her head was like the first time ever sitting on Santa’s lap. He was a bristly old man, lots and lots and lots of stories. He had five daughters and just started trucking because of some governmental issues and a wife that left him high and dry for a weather man. She’d found her way to a rest stop, waited for a day and half. (It was one of those fancy ones, with the touristy wildlife information ones, Todd told her to go there. Probably better than some gas station or wandering around) Dennis had parked his truck for the night, said he saw her and saw her again the next morning. That was when he approached. Coffee after coffee later, stories about his daughters, and an old Leanne Rimes cd on loop, (he’d said her voice reminded him of heaven and if something should happen on these roads he’d go hearing the angels sing) 

    Dennis was delivering to a small town just outside New York City. Just off Lanford. Lanford. Exactly where she was headed. What was a couple miles anyways? She was meeting family. And family, that was the main reason. When was it ever not? Crystal, or ‘Mamma’ known to Alex was on a come down from one of her wild binges, the kind Alex hadn’t seen in a while. She was always fun during these times, revealing family secrets, comng up with all sorts of ideas for them to do; that she knew she’d get to do someday. Someday soon. Mamma was her favorite person in the whole world, she was her best friend. She’d shown her a cutout of a man, all dressed up. Told her he was her uncle. Alex never knew of any family besides her Mamma and gammy who sat two trailers over always watching Jeopardy and chasing the kids off. So she thought why not.  

     The address she’d gotten from Lucy, wrote it down five times in different pockets in case she forgot. Meandering her way in, she’d passed a lake, found the town and was pointed in the direction of Westbrook. Which, was strange because the address was in Kingsgate. But, she’d assumed enough that the others in the town wouldn’t lie and knew of at least a Samantha Blackwood. By this time the light outside was going down, she probably smelled of sweat, Cheez-its and evergreen air freshener. Walking the expanse of the straight outta one of those home magazines Crystal had all over their trailer streets with the little brick roads and gaslights everywhere, people with shopping bags. Hell, Alex half expected to see horse and carriages. Until she’d reached the address. In awe at what she was seeing, part of her not sure if this was the right place or not. Snow crunching below her feet, her duffel dropped at her side Alex knocked, then rang the bell listed ‘Blackwood’ three times, just to make sure. Peering through the doorways entrance, a staircase only thing in her view. Didn’t seem like someone would be able to hear anything. “Heelllooo, anyone inside? I’m not a murderer or one of those sellers I swear...”
