Annon-Guy: Weekly Reminder - In regards to Alice, why do you think she's obsessed with killing Marta so much? Apart from getting Ratatosk's Core obviously. I know Richter and Decus isn't doing it for s&!#'s and giggles.
To be honest, that is a very good question. I always interpreted the particular rivalry Alice had with Marta as a combination of Alice hating Marta because she was Brute's daughter and therefore was granted special permission and special protection for a lot of things before she left the Vanguard, even though Marta herself isn't particularly strong. Alice genuinely seems to believe that might makes right or at the very least, believes that's how the world works. If you're strong, you get to do whatever you want, and if you're not strong, you either have to wedge yourself under the right hand of the strongest person you can find to either knife them in the back and steal their power or so they can swat away anything that threatens you as a coincidental side effect of them steamrolling everyone that isn't on their side. So I guess in short, I think part of it was jealousy that Marta had a lot of power in the Vanguard simply by being Brute's daughter, and not only didn't she deserve that power because Alice didn't see her as strong, but she also didn't use that power she was handed. She ran away from it. But I think part of the reason Alice is so hung up on Marta is because Alice and Richter made a deal. She knows Richter has access to the demons of Nifelheim and has a deal with them. We know from the manga that not just anyone can walk into the Ginnungagap. So she needs Richter's connections to the demons if she wants to reforge the pact she had with the demons back in Hima. We've seen the Hypnos machines get damaged in the game, and they only work due to a dwindling supply of Exspheres which get harder and harder to find because Lloyd is gathering them up. Alice doesn't want to have to rely on those machines to be powerful. So if she wants get back the power she used to have to manipulate monsters without machines from a new demon pact, she has to do what Richter wants. And a big part of Richter's plan involves Marta being dead one way or another, either because she would refuse to give up Ratatosk's core or because she physically can't and taking it from her will kill her. The problem with that is, Marta and Emil are good enough fighters as a team that they're difficult for even Alice and Decus to take down, plus they have monster allies. So imagine Alice's frustration that this girl, who she doesn't consider powerful, keeps managing to escape or fight back enough that Alice can't capture her, which is the ONE THING she needs to do in order to become more powerful. Like, imagine trying to swat a fly and the fly is so fast that you can't, or on the off chance you can get a swat in, the fly just sits there like "Oh, you tried to hit me? Let me hit you back with the same strength as a human."
Basically I think it's a combination of jealousy, frustration, and determination. Alice will do anything to gain more power. Richter has connections to power that he's willing to share if she can catch Marta, but Marta is JUST strong enough to avoid getting caught. At least not for long. So basically Alice is in a situation where someone is like "I'll give you the equivalent of a sub machine gun and 1 million dollars cash if you can swat that fly." Except the fly knows kung fu and is as big as you are. So Alice simultaneously has her pride on the line and her one major goal on the line and all of that rests on getting rid of Marta. So obviously that would make her a bit single-minded.
Of course, that's just my interpretation. We're never given a definitive textual answer that plainly spells out why Alice does what she does other than what we learn about her past. So there could always be other ways of looking at it.

Annon-Guy: Okay. What do you think of Emil, Marta, Richter, Alice and Decus as characters?
Regarding Emil and Marta, I've already made a pretty in-depth post about them and their roles here: https://kisant.tumblr.com/post/670044958925930497/at-the-beginning-of-dawn-of-the-new-world
(Aka their initial roles as Knight Emil and Lord Marta are wrong, because Emil is the real Lord and Marta is the real Knight)
Long story short, I really like Emil and Marta, especially because they have a very big and significant character journey together. Judging them by how they behaved in the early chapters of the story (Emil the doormat and Marta the obsessive love interest) is to make a big disservice to both of them. Because early Emil and early Marta are the flaws that both of them have to grow from throughout the game, and the narrative does it pretty well. Emil is someone who needs to find his own courage, his own dream and to become more assertive with his thoughts and feelings. Early Emil hides it all behind the facade of the doormat who keeps all of his real self locked away in order to avoid rejection and punishment, and then he also uses Ratatosk's personality as a shield for the times when he wants to act more assertively, but still thinks that he's still too weak or too unassertive to do so. Marta, on the other hand is the opposite. Early Marta pushes her own view on the world onto everyone else, such as her belief that Emil was the one who saved her in Palmacosta, and that they are a lovey-dovey couple from the start. So early Marta is pushy and has trouble listening to others. Where Emil needs to learn how to take a step forward and make the real him heard by others, Marta needs to learn how to take a step back and be considerate of how the people around her actually feel, rather than how she would like them to feel.
Emil starts being told that he is a Knight, while what he actually needs to become is a Lord (as the incarnated Ratatosk). And Marta is the opposite, she starts out as the Lord (as the vessel of Ratatosk), but she needs to become a Knight (someone who protects others).
So, in my opinion, their romance arc is very good, because both of them grow for the better because of their respective influence on the other. Late game Emil and Marta have faced the reality of their situations (that Emil = Ratatosk and that Marta needs to confront her father directly in order to save him and everyone else) and they have reached a healthy balance in their relationship, in which Emil becomes more assertive and sure of himself, while Marta knows the real Emil and loves him for it, rather than the princely illusion she had made up in her head at the beginning. That's why she is the one who can realize Emil's trick at the end of the game, call him out on it, and push him to save himself as well.
Now, onto Richter. The very first impression I had of him was "HELLO THERE, MR. TOTALLY-NOT-A-KRATOS-ARCHETYPE". As in, much like Kratos, Richter was too cool and too over-levelled to be a permanent party member. Thus is the curse of the Tales Of magic knight character. I think I managed to catch most of his special quests (which I enjoyed a lot). Emil, Marta and Richter are definitely the most important and well-developed new characters in the game, and a good chunk of the narrative weight of the story has to do with how they interact with each other. Richter is the one who gives Emil the initial push to be himself, find a dream and have the courage to fight for it. However, once Emil finds his purpose as Knight of Ratatosk and Marta's protector, he finds himself in opposition to Richter, who puts his mission of killing Ratatosk above everything else. Even if the means to his goal include killing an innocent teenage girl, corrupting an organization of activists, destabilizing the climate of the entire world, developing yet another magi-cannon, or making pacts with demons that would bring the demon realm upon Aselia, it would be all worth it if Ratatosk dies and Aster is avenged. Especially since he planned to sacrifice himself all along in order to stop the demon realm from actually invading, thus, his plan included atonement through death or service from the beginning.
Because what Aster was for Richter, is the same thing that Richter was later on for Emil. Both Emil and Richter had been beaten down into compliance, and what allowed them to break out of it and develop to their full potential was Aster/Richter seeing their value and encouraging them to do so. Richter didn't only see his old friend in early Emil, he also saw himself back when he was an enslaved half-elf in Tethe-alla's research centre.
Decus and Alice are also pretty interesting. Alice, especially, is another example of a half-elf that would have been a shoe-in for Desian recruitment in Mythos' old system. They also serve as foils for Emil and Marta. Decus and Alice are basically what Emil and Marta would have been if they didn't overcome their character flaws, and, instead, had allowed their flaws to overcome them. Alice has Marta's pushyness and she's a beast-master like Emil, while Decus has Marta's delusional I-will-do-anything-for-my-love attitude, and Emil's doormat nature (as he is willing to do and be anything that Alice wants, no matter how unhealthy or villanous). Unlike them, they don't manage to grow out of these flaws, and Alice only realizes her own feelings for Decus as he dies and she can no longer fix anything.
So basically, they are foils and dark mirrors of our protagonists.

Annon-Guy: As fellow Dawn of the New World fan, what do you think of the main characters introduced in that game?
Specifically Emil, Ratatosk, Marta, Tenebrae, Richter, Aqua, Alice and Decus.
Its been forever since ive played dotnw, so i might mess up small details. (I want to play it again- but am procrastinating playing symphonia orz)
Emil- the twist with him was so good. Kinda similar to Lukes twist in tota, except a bit more tragic because. The real Emil Castnagier is dead from the palmacosta fire. And Aster is dead because of Ratatosk.
But... he's still the real Emil. Even if his life was a lie. Even if his memories of his past were fake. The memories he made with Marta, Tenebrae, and everyone were real.
Ratatosk- I cant really remember a tonne about him individually tbh. Only that he improves over the course of the story, and becomes a much better teammate to Marta and Tenebrae.
Speaking of- Marta- shes a lot of fun honestly. The quips between her and tenebrae were perfect. And her character was also really cool- going up against her dad and the vanguard, all to try and save ratatosk. Shes cool.
Also, shes got tokunaga on her backpack. Any fan of Best Abyss Character, Anise Tatlin, is a friend of mine! (joke)(kinda)(i probably would like any Anise fan unless they were murderers or something like that.)
Tenebrae- brillient honestly. After playing tota, i can see the Jade influence loud and clear. And then you get to the twist and realise- he was in on it! He knew what was going on... owwie my heart. I see his reasoning for staying silent though. Just. Ow.
Richter- gay gay homosexual gay- sorry Richter, but its true!
On a serious note. God his situation is tragic. Seeing his dead best friend in Emil- and still seeing fit to be nice to Emil, and help him out? Despite knowing that this is really ratatosk? Amnesiatically piloting a copy of his best friends body? Ow owow ow ow. That got to me when i was sixteen (still kinda gets to me tbh) why? Because he believed in Emil being Emil.
Im sorry, I just need a minute.
Aqua- another one I dont remember a tonne about. She was really loyal to Richter- even above his own desires at times iirc.
And now, for my absolute blorbo from this game...
Alice- my silliest little meow meow who has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG EVER FIGHT ME ABOUT IT!
(She has done everything wrong and i love her for it.)
I went fucking loopy for this girl when i was sixteen. Like, if she told me to jump off a cliff i woulda done it. I wouldve fought Decus for her heart in a heartbeat if. Yknow. I couldve ever stood a chance at winning lmao.
I did all her sidequests in a second playthrough. (Missed some time sensative ones in my first playthrough nooooo) and felt so bad for her when her backstory was revealed. I loved that sidequest where she gives an old lady from tetha hella medicine (iirc) because. It showed me just what she couldve been if only the world had been better towards her.
Shit, i even tried brainstorming some timetravel au fanfic with her when i was a teen. Glad that never got out of my head- i wouldve written it SO badly. (My writing when i was sixteen was SO SHIT OMG-)
I felt so bad for that final battle with them, where we had to kill her and Decus. And she realises she really did love him... tear my heart out too why dont you?!
I really need to replay this game honestly.
Decus- hes pretty cool honestly. I cant remember the most about him. I liked hearing his backstory. And he had a interesting character- prioritising Alice above any allegence he had to the vanguard. And yet- he played the punch clock villian. It was never personal if he had to attack Emil or Marta- just his job.
This is all ive got for now. One day i will replay it again. One day. I hope that answers your question!

Annon-Guy: I asked other DotNW fans this, but what are your thoughts on;
Emil/Ratatosk, Marta, Tenebrae, Richter, Aqua, Alice and Decus as characters?
What do you think of Emil X Marta and Alice X Decus?
Sure thing, dude! I'll make this the last post of tonight's Tales of Sunday, too. Let's set this up the same way I did on this post.
Emil: He's baby boy baby! I know a lot of people who play (and dislike) DotNW can't stand Emil's cowardice and hate towards Lloyd at the beginning. Besides the hating Lloyd part, I always found it very relatable! Admittedly it's still a character flaw for him to get over, but I don't find it as annoying as others do. But I love him, I love his development, and his eventual friendship with Lloyd. I think his character was handled really well. And dude. Especially how he feels responsible for Aster's death and stealing his life? Relatable, I would feel the exact same way 100%.
Ratatosk: Spicy baby! Honestly his character development was a lot of fun to see through the story, especially how it all comes to a head when he fights Emil in the true ending. (I also love the detail that he's just as good a cook as Emil, he just doesn't care about presentation lol). The way he gets soft for Marta is very sweet, too. I have mixed feelings about how his character is handled in the crossover games, though.
Marta: Haha, like I said, she's not my favorite Tales Heroine, but she's not bad. I also loved her as a kid! She was like a silly self-insert for me at the time. Her weapon has always confused me, and her battle combos aren't great, but bringing optimism to contradict Emil's pessimism was always a nice touch. I especially love her relationship with Tenebrae, and her eventual friendship with Colette. I'm not a ~huge~ fan of her reading too much into Emil's interactions with the other female members of the party ("I see you're into older women now" like what the hell), but when she's sincere I really appreciate her.
Tenebrae: love him, snarky doggy boi :3 His clothes are the same as his skin... always bothered me, ha! Besides Repede, I think he's one of the better designs of a dog character in the series. LOVE his tail hand. Iconic design. 10/10.
Richter: He's fine, he serves his purpose. I wish I could love him as much as other fans, but much like Yuan, I never really clicked with him. His motivation and how much he believed in Aster is very moving, though! And his theme? Top tier.
Aqua: she's a character. Love her design!
Alice: a really good character to hate! Her baby voice makes my skin crawl, her malicious innocence is entertaining. All her nicknames for people suck, and I think that just adds to it. To be clear, I don't hate her as a character that exists! I'm glad she exists, she adds to the plot and to fleshing out Marta. It sucks she gets dropped for a good while after the raid on the Vanguard base. But man. I hate her.
Decus: he's fine. I tend to have a bias towards characters that have a lot of jewelry (due to my phobia) in not liking them as much as other people? He's in the story to exist as a Lloyd-framer and a mirror to Emil, but otherwise they don't do much with him that matters. He's comedic. Too much so. You can't take him seriously even when they want you to because he's too goofy.
This next section I assume you mean like, shipping wise?
Emil x Marta: They're cute! I like them a lot, as characters, but not so much as a couple, I guess? They're a cute high school couple in a Christian School setting, but once they head off to college either they're going to need to really make things work or settle with being friends (close friends!). That's the vibe I get from them. I don't see them completely separating, but I also don't see them like. Having kids. At least, not without problems.
Alice x Decus: they're a mirror to Emil and Marta's relationship! That's... about it. I'm going to be completely honest, I don't really have any thoughts about them other than that is a toxic relationship. They're okay!

the voice acting in tales of xillia has been subpar thus far, especially after coming from having played dawn of the new world. i mean, say what you will about that game but the voice acting of the main cast was really well done. but to my surprise, i just met driselle and she has the same voice actor as alice, one of my fave characters from dotnw!! i got so excited since i also thought she did a stellar job with the VA work in that game! well, at least i THINK it's her, just looked up in the tales wiki but it doesn't have her english VA info, so i'm just gonna assume it IS her since it sounds just like her except not evil lol.
anyway, i'm only 7 hours into the game but i've been enjoying it so far. it started off kind of slow but i'm now more engaged into the story and where it will all lead. can't wait to see what happens next!

Will there EVER be rival characters like Alice and Decus again? Will ANYONE come close to reaching how perfectly they used The Power Of Love Except We're Both Awful And Antagonistic And Our Relationship Is Sickeningly Unhealthy But We're All The Other Has or are we doomed to never reach that high again? God I wish it was easier to play ToS2 in the post-Wii era, I miss that game.
I WOULD FUCKING KILL FOR RIVALS LIKE ALICE AND DECUS AGAIN! THE WAY THAT THEY WERE SO BROKEN YET FIT TOGETHER PERFECTLY IN CACOPHONY OF MADNESS WAS PERFECT! ESPECIALLY WHEN ONE OF THE GAME'S MAIN THEMES IS BOTH THE DANGERS AND POWER OF LOVE, ALLOWING THEM TO SERVE AS THE PERFECT FOIL TO OUR PROTAGONISTS!!
But we really have peaked and will never get that high again with the current "Age of sweet misunderstood Blorbos" that we're currently in. Now almost every Villain comes with some kinda bullshit excuse and built in redemption arc because they're baiting some kinda DLC or supplementary material they're trying to sell. Or just "doing it for the evuls" to a comically cartoonish degree because they don't wanna deal with Fujoshis and Redditors fans trying to redeem them with 5k word essays about how they were oppressed and misunderstood. And about how the genocide was morally right actually or if it didnt happen "nobody got hurt so they can be redeemed UwU".
Tales of Symphonia DotNW came out in 2008 and we were too young!! Too young to realize just how good we had it with the villains amidst the salt of the OG Cast being stuck at level 50. Now we'll never again get that perfect storm of enough evil, power, and toxicity to make them threatening villains that own up and take pride in their atrocities. Accompanied with that little bit of humanity to make you emphathize and understand them without reaching "poor little meow meow" status.
Also GOD SIS ME TOO!! UGGHHH MY WII BROKE DOWN AND I MISS BOTH ToS2 and Animal Parade SO BAD!!

I accidentally streamed this to my friends for a whole 5 hours- Which is how long the 1st chapter took me to beat. @kazuichisbabygorl called Emil’s ahoge a banana, so now he’s banana head. We also called him oatmeal. Also, when Marta runs her hair looks like a cockroach??? And Emil saying “say your prayers” at the start of a battle is funny?? I don’t get it but okay. The other friend there was @king-kichi.

Annon-Guy: Weekly Reminder - In a BBTAG Story Idea I have, do you think Alice would try to trick other characters into trying to kill Marta? I could see Alice being heavily deceitful to anyone who isn't Decus and Mithos.
Alice is equal parts a sadist, battle mage, and manipulator. If she can't get what she wants at the end of her rapier/crop or under threat of her monsters' teeth, she'll lie if she has to. She went to Marta begging for help for Decus because she knew Marta was such a "Goodie Two Shoes" that Marta would go with her and try to help. There's no question that Alice would manipulate others into fighting, dying, or killing for her, even if it involves lying. The only person I can't see her lying to is Decus, and not necessarily because I think she loves him unconditionally, though that could be an explanation if that's your ship. I think the biggest reason Alice would never lie to Decus (and only Decus) is because Decus is already unquestioningly loyal. He would do anything for her, so telling him the truth is just giving him more information to do the task better. I honestly think she would even lie to Mithos unless they had some sort of deal. The only reason Alice listened to Richter is because he basically promised to introduce her to the demons if she helped him. And Alice was used to the power she got to control monsters and animals through demon powers before, so she was willing to do basically anything to have that power again so she wouldn't have to rely on the Hypnos machines and the limited supply of Exspheres needed to power the Hypnos in order to control her creatures. So unless she and Mithos had some sort of deal, she would even lie to him. Alice only seems to care about honesty if she thinks she can use it to get something she wants. Otherwise, she'll say whatever she needs to.
