i absolutely love alicent's ep 5 arc.

she begins the ep alone. without allies. without friends. without family. a hightower in the dragons' den.

everyone just expects alicent to silently accept her fate. to be grateful that she was chosen as viserys's king consort. to wear the Targaryen colors and be at her husband's disposal.

but alicent puts up a fucking fight. she's done trying to fit in and please people that have no respect for her.

i also love how my queen immediately went to the hightowers' table. she wants everybody to know exactly who she is.

"i worried that given leave of your father's shadow, you might wither in king landing's sun. but you stood tall"

and in the end, she ends up making a friend that will become her lifelong companion and biggest supporter.

alicent owned that episode.

Alicent who veils her hair during her day to day life, elegant laces and silks adorning her long ginger-brown hair, covering it completely at the Sept.

Alicent who wears dresses with long heavy skirts and always covers her elbows with billowing sleeves.

Alicent who conceals her silhouette with thick shaping garments. they also just helped her back during her pregnancies and taking care of kids (her servants recommended them so she'd have full range of motion and support)

Alicent who was stripped of her modesty, her dignity and sense of security whenever Viserys wanted her. stripped of it by her own father when he sent her to Viserys's chambers in a dress that didn't cover as much as she would have liked, especially when she visited a man with those (silent) instructions.

Alicent who lets her hair down around people she trusts. covering it around Rhaenyra after she abandoned her, a blow to Rhaenyra, a blatant "you hurt me and broke my trust". letting Criston see her hair after he becomes her sworn sword. covering in front of Viserys until he demands she stops. Alicent putting a little makeshift veil on her daughter, who wanted to look like her mum, promising it would protect her from how loud the world was.

Alicent who only trusts her closest servants to dress her, and even then insists on being in a full shift before they can come in.

Alicent who felt stripped bare while giving birth to her children.

little Alicent looking up to her mum who was also very modest, and spending her childhood playing in long skirts.

Alicent who wears shawls and scarves out in public or at events. Criston watches to make sure she remains properly covered. her hands fiddling with the patterns or tassels while she talks to others.

Alicent doing this with her kids:

Criston offering her his cloak when she's put in bad situations like sudden crowds or outings.

wearing flowy but opaque fabrics during the summers, looking ethereal and goddess-like with her layers skirts and sleeves.

the whole Larys situation being even more sickening.

all 3 of her sons being protective of her modesty alongside Criston, always offering their cloaks to her or standing to block her from the wind or wandering eyes. Aegon holding her veil in place when it's windy, Aemond placing a cloak over her in public, Daeron fiercely defending his mum from lusting glances or lingering stares.

Helaena continuing to veil with her mum when they go out, they love matching veils and trying ornate styles.

Alicent fixing her daughters veil in attempts to get it to stay in on dragon back. it doesn't. but they don't mind the extra bonding time none the less.

gold veils that literally make her look like she's dripping in gold.

tucking her babes in her shawls or holding them against her skirts that are practically swallowing them whole.

Alicent collecting layers. Ornate undergarments that cover her arms in gold and embroidered patterns, some almost like tapestries others more simple. undershirts that cover her neck, with "choker" patterns and sewn in jewels. modest nightgowns and robes made of the softest, most breathable fabrics in existence.

covering her face on holy days/days of importance.

Viserys never cares about Aemma or Alicent.

You would think a guy who saw his first wife go through so much suffering to give him a son and literallly died trying to make him happy wouldn’t want to see someone ever go through that again. But Viserys gets Alicent pregnant with barely a year between her first two children. We see during Aegon’s second name day hunt that Alicent is very pregnant. Rhaenyra even asks if she should be traveling because she’s so pregnant. So if Alicent is 8 or 9 months pregnant, that means Viserys got her pregnant only 1 year and 4/3 months after birthing Aegon. This would be really hard on Alicent’s body as shes not even 18 when she has her first kid.

When we look at the ages of their other two kids, Aemond and Daeron, it gets even worst. Aemond is born a year after Haelena, 109 and 110, which gives us at most another year and three months before Alicent became pregnant or at the worst 3 months. Either way this is a quick turn around and not good for Alicent. Daeron’s age is more iffy because we haven’t seen him in the show, but based on the books he is born in 114. This gives Alicent time to recover before she’s forced to be pregnant again.

This should show people that Viserys never learned from Aemma’s death and was willing to put another young girl at risk for his own desires. Viserys is the true villain of this show and should be treated as the horrible father, husband, and friend he is.

people who claim rhaenicent is ‘never gonna happen’ are so funny because they’re missing the point that it already has happened. everybody knows they are past the point of no return and cannot feasibly end up together, but in early show canon they are undeniably intertwined in a way that toes the line of romantic. part of their tragedy (in the show) is that they once held that incredibly deep love for each other that was ruined by those around them. this is confirmed by actors and directors alike. it is already canon.

saw someone say they're we're happy Alicent's and Otto's deaths forced them "realize what they had done" and like...

Otto's one thing, I get the animosity. but Alicent? your getting hot and bothered over her realizing she failed, she failed to save her children, she failed to protect them, to them alive? that she tried so hard, so fucking hard, making every hard decision, trying to get between her children and the fate they were damned to by Viserys and Rhaenyra? that she damned her kids, who were already damned to die to begin with, and had to suffer the guilt of them dying to her own hand? that she's going to drive herself mad with grief over her children, her grandchildren?

like... it's not satisfying (especially for show Alicent) watching a woman go so mad with grief it literally kills her because she fought with everything she had to save her children only for them to die anyway. ever since her father's exile, when Rhaenyra's lies took Viserys's favor, when Viserys ignored the Rhaenyra's sons bastardhood at the risk of the whole house, or when Luke took Aemond's eye and Viserys demanded good will; she knew her children's lives were forfeit. then Daemon killed Vaemond and her children's coffins were built, catching cobweb's all the while. she knew and she fought it desperately, taking risk after risk, living in fear until her moment came, she could out Aegon on the thrown, she could protect her kids, maybe, just fucking maybe they'd be safe... only for it to lead to a war that would kill her entire family.

her death, slow and tragic as it was, is heartbreaking. she didn't deserve it, she deserved to feel safe, to feel as though she could allow her past friend take the thrown without her children being at risk to feel as though she and her children weren't being circled by wolves and picked at by vulture's. she didn't deserve to live alone and die alone. she didn't deserve to have her hands coated in her children's blood.
