Stranded in Monaco di Baviera

I started preparing for this trip by watching the first season of Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl. Little did I know that my short vacation will double in length.

There was a time when München was known as the Haupstadt der Bewegung, but in the last few days there was no bewegung of trams, buses and most of the flights were canceled. So I got stuck.

The first thing that hit me in the city was the smell. Later I would feel the same smell (or another, a mixture of pork, sausages and Glühwein) even from the 91 m high tower of the St. Peter church.

However the first thing to warm my soul was this Osram advert:

On the way to the Glypthotek I was happy to see this:

Of course one goes to the Glypthotek to see the Medusa Rondanini.

And in München one goes to eat and drink.

Obazda goes very good with beer (look up a recipe and make it as soon as you can).

Pork knuckles were a disappointment (I think the ones I am used to are smoked beforehand).

The beef soup? My mother makes better soup from chicken!

If you care about sacrificed animals and you think that every possible part of it should be used, also if you like to eat organs, you might try Milzwurst that is a thick sausage made with spleen. You might try it, but it's just meh...

What to drink? Drink helles, Feuerzangenbowle, Enzian and Bärwurz Schnaps and generally spirits that are so obscure that even the young waitress doesn't know about their existence (Bockbierbrand).

Now about something else. On the third day the snow was so big that the airport got in full chaos mode.

On that day I have seen a young woman skiing on the sidewalk. Next level for sure.

In six days I have seen almost everything I wanted and some things I didn't even care about so much and I made a daytrip to Norimberga.

I had the opportunity to try Gillian's g-spot drinks while I was in England and so I did.

I promised myself that I would go into it unbiased and judge it fairly. Disclaimer: We all like different things! Me reviewing the flavors is just how I see (read: taste) them. My control group was my friend who tried each flavor as well.

Read my thoughts under the cut!

All three beverages are based on sparkling water and apple juice. Each has a different blend of herbal extracts. Now, I'm no expert, but for the most part, those other ingredients are used in very small doses. So really, in order for the nootropics and adaptogens to have any effect, you would have to drink more than one or two cans per day - and over a longer period as well.

The brand says that they "lie somewhere between a purist health drink that claims to change your life, and a mainstream soda brand that wants you hooked." That is one hell of a claim. Personally, I'm not sure how mainstream a beverage that costs £3,50 per can (0,33 l) can be.

The first one I tried was "Soothe". It's supposed to "calm your mind", according to the can, and has magnesium, maca, reishi, and ashwagandha as its ingredients. I had no idea what to expect and I can say in all honesty, I did not like the taste at all. My friend said it tastes like drinking medicine. To me, it tastes like sparkling cough syrup. It's because of the sage but also the slightly woody and bitter taste of the reishi.

Now let's move on to my taste test:

My next one was "Protect". That one uses ginger, turmeric, chaga and peppercorn, which I must admit sounded interesting to me. Well. What can I say? It tasted way better than "Soothe", but you must absolutely like the taste of ginger. My friend doesn't and said this one tastes even more like medicine.

The aftertaste was the worst. It would just not go away. I don't know if sage as a cure for anything related to colds and coughs is a German thing and that's we reacted so strongly to it. Anyway, I liked this one so little that I didn't dare to try the next one for another two days.

I saved the best for last: "Lift". From the few things I've read online, most people seemed to prefer this one. The ingredients here include bacopa, theanine, cordyceps, and lion's mane in addition to berries and peppercorn. I really liked this one because it's actually refreshing.

The aftertaste is not as insistent and quite nice with the gentle spiciness of the peppercorn and the turmeric. As I kept drinking it, I understood what my friend meant by saying it tastes like medicine though. Drinking the whole can was a struggle because the ingredients just get too much at some point.

Like "Protect", it's a bit spicy, but it works way better here with the berries. Though I must admit that I couldn't really taste the berries as well as I would have liked. As much as I liked this one, it's not something I would want to drink daily. Like the other flavors, this one, too, has several ingredients that taste bitter and/or earthy, like bacopa and lion's mane. It's just not my thing. My friend agreed that this was the best one, but she was like, one sip of this is enough.

Conclusion:

Oooof. I speculated with a friend (not the one who did the tasting with me!) what these would taste like and we originally thought it would taste like sparkling apple juice with some flavor. I don't know if it's a thing anywhere else, but Apfelschorle (sparkling apple juice) is a huge deal here and really, really tasty.

I didn't expect the bitterness and earthiness to be so prominent in the taste, to be honest. All in all, I expected more from these drinks- Especially at that price. None of these were so good that I was like, I want more. Maybe they are good for my health - though that's quite a claim - but so is water. And maybe the sparkling, flavored water you can buy at Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's isn't as healthy (but it might be?), but it tastes much better. It's way cheaper, too.

All that aside, I'm still not sure what to think of the whole brand and the idea behind it. One thing, in particular, I'm missing is information about how the ingredients are sourced. Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Reishi, etc. aren't exactly ingredients you can get everywhere.

veth would raid everyone’s button n bead bags and would point out old grandpa jumpers to caleb while he looks at 20p books. jester would also be looking at beads but rlly she’d just look at everything, esp old stuffed animals.. she wants to give them new homes.. fjord n beau would probably still with yasha until jester drags beau away to look at a cool stall n fjord wanders off to look at like fishing equipment or old sports brand sweatshirts. molly is all over grandma’s jewellery from the 60s/70s. he buys flannel shirts for yasha n is constantly calling the rest of the nein over to look at stuff with him. cad goes to those big big vans that always have tons of flowers n plants n likes looking at handmade stuff :))

oowaa ;;_ ; good. .. love thems. yasha quietly manning their stuff from her van is so good. she's like "No other offers. it is £2 :-l" and no one argues. i think jes and cad wouldve made sm things like beaded woven bracelets and polymer clay keychains and things like that, also painted tote bags like u said :-3 !! also cads extra plant seedlings (like, a million tiny spiderplants or tomato plants too) and also dried lavender sachets. also he has ear defenders on because some people are loud n have music playing sometimes . .. not a car boot sale but im thinkin of this big secondhand market i went to in berlin , it was so cool, so many things to look at, and some tasty waffles too (the ones shaped like flowers, with powdered sugar) :-3 . . also so true. .veth would be in all the button n bead bags :-3 someones selling a box of spare buttons n she starts th most intense haggling ever. meanwhile calebs silently looking (also wearing ear defenders) at all th books. .perhaps he finds some vry old (but not worth much) books and buys them all because theyre v niche and have interesting covers. also for sure gets all those grandpa jumpers .. . also keeps an eye on th ancient musty corduroy things molly finds some more old fabric to turn into things, and also some Ridiculous boots. like so tall, so shiny and uncomfortable but he's like Oh, perfect >:) , and oh! also he haggles for A Lot of rings. lots of shiny trinkets to make lots of noise , and definitely buys something because he thinks its cursed (and then cad tells him he cant bring it inside until its been sitting in the garden for a week to be Cleansed of ghosts or somthing). oh, speaking of garden, i think cad the carboot sale is where cad gets lots of plantpots :-D even slightly janky teapots and cups get turned to planters because he doesnt want to drink from them because they feel incorrect. and he buys seeds to grow :-3 also also wuahg yea ;w; yasha's got her flannels and maybe found a book that had pressed flowers in it and bought it to go with hers ;;w; also probably found another strange instrument perhaps. . .. and everyone meets up before going home when theyre all conked out n they all go get zemnian herzwaffeln and apfelschorle :-3

Twinnings Lady Grey Probably the love of my life. A coup of this black, orangey goodness keeps me awake through long work days and gives me comfort on sleepy weekend mornings. There were times when half my suitcase on a London trip was reserved for tea.

Chai Latte with Oat Milk I fell in love with this drink in Sweden of all places and learned the hard way that I can either have milk or spices but not both at once. Oh well, it’s still delicious with Oat Milk.

Milky Oolong It’s soft it’s milky and it reminds me of a vacation with my best friend where we sat in a Chinese tea towel somewhere in Estonia or Latvia. It gives me all the warm feelings. (Yes, I love tea.)

Apfelschorle (Apple spritzer?) Nothing like apple juice and mineral water on a hot day or after a long workout. It’s also the drink I miss most when I am not in my home country.

Hendricks Midsummer Solstice & Fentimans Tonic This is honestly one of the best Gins I have ever had. Unfortunately it is a very limited edition and I am not sure there’s any bottles left. Oh well. It was good while it lasted.

what is the ultimate summer drink

i really like putting lemon slices and/or mint leaves in my water in summer. i also love apple spritzer (Apfelschorle; apple juice mixed with sparkling water) which is a staple here and perfectly refreshing. caffeine doesn't do anything for me, but i do like coffee, so i sometimes have iced coffees when it's too hot for, well, hot coffee.

if we're talking alcoholic drinks, i was recently introduced to the heaven on earth that were vodka passion fruit and liqueur 43 passion fruit SLUSHIES!!!!! so so good and, obviously, nice and cold.

i think they might mean Apfelschorle, it's a German apple drink (I think it might also be a kind of spritzer but the kind I've had is basically just sparkling apple juice). It's very similar to Martinelli and it's super good! Since I don't drink alcohol due to religion, I drink a lot of it lol.

@enraged-fangirl-and-co is from the Netherlands so maybe you’re talking about the same thing but just with the Dutch & German name difference? I’d never heard either term before now so that’s only why I bring it up (I am not qualified to comment on the name lmao).

Martinelli’s is sooo good they got that one Apple-Grape sparkling cider mix and it’s 😩🙌🏽 Tbh the non-alcoholic ciders taste better anyways so you are not missing out!💕🍎 but yeah I think I buy like six bottles at once cause they’re always on sale and they’re soooo good🥰 anon you’re in good company haha
