And another thing! Literally any queer story that takes place during the colonial age would have a huge gaping hole in it if it didn't have anticolonialism as a theme. Especially one that centers indigenous people. Like the reason that every culture had their own concepts of gender until something happened and then suddenly the gender binary was ubiquitous is because western European colonial powers made their view of gender the only acceptable one as part of christianizing and colonizing the world. You're not gonna have a show set in 1717 in the Caribbean where the love interest is a gay Maori man and the main deuteragonist is a non-binary mestizo catholic and just skip over colonialism. Like these are exactly the people who western gender roles are being forced on at fucking gun point during this era. Jim and Ed are both mixed race characters who's gender and sexual identities are in active defiance of the colonial powers that be. And this is the fucking Stede Ed and Jim show.
And there's something to be said for the fact that Stede's toxic masculinity plot line is internalized and Ed's struggle with toxic masculinity is largely external in the form a white guy who rubs elbows with the British Navy when Ed doesn't behave to his standard of masculinity. That choice didn't come out of nowhere and it shows a deep understanding of where homophobia comes from. That's not to say that precolonial communities of color were paradise for people that we today would consider queer but the rich tapestry of sexual and gender expressions that existed in those communities were erased in the name of colonialism. That's going to affect literally any queer person at the time when OFMD is set. These two things are inextricably linked.
Like when David Jenkins says a lot of what we're taught about being men is wrong, motherfucker who taught us what a man was. Who taught Ed what a man was? Who taught Stede what a man was for that matter? It's the white dad with the English accent who is violent (derogatory) and overbearing.
Like you get what I'm saying right? Like it's a silly little rom com but also it must necessarily be that deep because of who these characters are and when and where they exist.

WOW you’ve just changed my life with Mai and Sokka teen detectives. they would really balance each other out well, I can see their dynamic really working. thank u for ur service 🫡
yes!!!! my mai&sokka besties agenda is spreading!!!! just from a cursory glance at your blog, i can see that your bio is literally “black cat x black cat supremacy” which. yeah. that’s exactly what it is (although if you’re talking about mai and zuko primarily, i’ll admit that i’ve always read him as an orange cat)

Next to it being just weird to include scenes debating if Steve died a virgin or not, the fact that the She Hulk show acts like it’d be a tragedy for him to have died a virgin is just.....what???? Why the fuck would it be a tragedy??? Because he’s hot??? Like, what is the MCU implying here??? That if you die a virgin, its tragic, especially if your hot???  Like, I thought we moved past shaming people for not having sex, especially given ace people exist, but no, MCU out here doing this shit and for some reason, people find it funny.

y’all keep saying how y’all hope ed becomes redeemable and like who tf cares he did anything wrong lmao. pushing Lucius overboard? hilarious. stranding the crew? hysterical. chopping off iffy’s toes? comedic af. y’all always so worried about a character being redeemable or morally right and it’s exhausting. that’s why modern books are what they are now. boring and lame af. ed is morally gray. he’s always been morally gray. he don’t like killin but he likes maimin and he has anger issues. and he’s hilarious when he does all of it.

Ok ok… here me out for a second…
Thenamesh Addams Family AU…
The Lee Family: business associates of Father's who were coming to meet with them over real estate (or some such). Mister Lee dealt in property, and also possessed quite a lot of the railways, according to Father. Missus Lee was as much of a matriarch as Mother, although they were going to talk about their poison gardens, or some other such.
Thena stared at the family standing in the foyer. They were like the picture perfect opposite of herself and her own family. They were dressed entirely in black, even the son in a smart black suit. They had mild expressions but warmer seeming eyes, all a gentle brown.
Mother and Father had perfectly sculpted smiles, but eyes as cold as the tundra. They were dressed in all white, just like Thena was, with her white-blonde hair braided over her shoulder.
"Mister and Missus Lee," Father greeted them with a falsely warm tone. Before they had arrived, he had said that they were horrid people to do business with, despite his very warm tone.
"Such a pleasure," Mother purred as she exchanged air-cheek-kisses with Missus Lee. She had said that she would rather let Theseus - the young iguana currently hiding in Thena's room - sit on her lap than align herself with 'Mister Lee's wife'.
Such walking contradictions her parents were.
"This is our son," Mister Lee smiled more genuinely, putting his hands on his son's (broad) shoulders. "Gilgamesh."
"Pleasure to meet you." He had a soft voice.
Thena stared at the young man. He was big for their age, with a young moustache coming in on his upper lip. Thena's lips twitched; it suited him, in a funny sort of way.
"Gilgamesh," Mister Lee clapped his hands on his son's back as the parents began moving into the drawing room, "greet the young lady properly."
Not that they stuck around to see that it happened.
Thena looked at the young man again, extending her hand, her palm facing the floor. Her face was still impassive, and she hadn't said a word, just like Father always taught her.
Gilgamesh looked at her with some intrigue in his eyes, bending further than he needed to as he accepted her hand in his. He bowed his head completely, nothing short of reverent as he said, "my pleasure."
Thena tilted her head as he kissed the back of her hand. It was gentle, and he even held it softly with his other hand as his lips touched her knuckle. She smiled; she could feel his moustache tickle her skin, "enchante."
"Bless you," he extended a handkerchief.
Thena laughed before quickly raising her hand between her mouth and his eyes. She was forgetting her etiquette with their guest; Mother would be furious.
"What, are you not allowed to laugh?"
Thena looked at him again, and, without his parents to loom over him, Gilgamesh seemed more relaxed. His shoulders were still wider than any she had seen, but they were slouched, his hands in his trouser pockets. She had never seen anyone look so comfortable in their own skin before.
"It's okay," he shrugged as he smiled, attempting to encourage her into doing the same, "I won't tell."
She almost - almost! - let another laugh escape her before fixing her lips into a perfect smile. It was rigid and hard to maintain, but it was the only one she knew how to do. "I thank you for your consideration."
"So, uh," Gilgamesh leaned back just for a second before walking closer to her, away from the doorway where their parents' business mutterings were happening. "We're supposed to...talk, I guess?"
"Indeed."
"Okay," he looked at her, hands still in his pockets. His eyes ran over her, and Thena briefly forgot what she had put on that day (Mother always picked her clothes for her anyway). "What do you wanna talk about?"
Thena blinked. She had read about trains and business economics and stock options all night in preparation to meet the magnate's son. And he was asking her? "Me?"
"Yeah, you," he smiled, even more naturally than before. He had a nice smile. "What do you like to do?"
What did she like to do? What was she allowed to do? Her days were filled with lessons, and then after that, she was left to her own devices. "Sometimes Mother lets me assist her in the poison garden."
"Oh yeah, Ma has the same kind of thing at home," Gilgamesh made a face that betrayed his lack of interest in the topic. "She just gets mad when I'm outside because she always thinks I'll step on it, though."
Thena felt her lips twitch, aching to leave the practised posture of the smile she had on. "Mother is similarly protective of ours. She gets furious when Theseus crawls around in the soil."
"Who's Theseus?"
Again, Thena felt caught off guard by the question, even though they were the only ones speaking. She wasn't used to being asked so many questions that weren't on a preordained subject. "Theseus is my iguana."
"You have a pet?" Gilgamesh beamed, so utterly delighted by even the idea of having an animal companion. He stepped closer to her, "can I see him?"
"I-I suppose," she uttered before she had a chance to think better of it. Was this what she was supposed to be doing? She was told to be hospitable to the Lee Family et al, so surely that included indulging Gilgamesh too...right? "Come with me."
"Allow me," he smiled, holding out his hand for her.
Thena paused just for a moment before slipping her hand into his, the way she had seen Mother do when Father held her hand as they walked the halls of their cold and sprawling estate. The way a gentleman did with a lady.
Gilgamesh held her hand so gently she felt as if she would collapse.
Thena looked down at the steps as she lead him upstairs, opting to walk to the left first. "Mother and Father have been anticipating your visit for quite some time."
"My folks too," he concurred, in much more casual phrasing. He looked around as they walked, his other hand still in his pocket. "They're all excited for it, and yet they keep saying what a drag it is."
Thena smiled as much as she was able without practising, "my parents are the same. I haven't the faintest idea why they insist on referring to things they claim are good to be so awful."
"They're funny like that, huh?" Gilgamesh looked away from the family portraits lining the upper walls to her again. "Should I have said it was quite awful to make your acquaintance?"
Thena let another tiny little laugh escape. She peeked at Gilgamesh, just to make sure he didn't mind. But he was smiling right at her. "Abysmal to meet you as well."
"See?" he grinned so freely, so uninhibited by the gilded cage around them. "Maybe that should be our code for things. If they're going to pretend shit it so great, then we can say just the opposite."
They reached the top of the staircase, where it split from its other half. Still, he didn't let go of her hand, waiting for to lead him wherever they pleased.
"Then I am having," she paused, her lips pressing together in threat of another smile, "an awful time."
His hand squeezed around hers faintly. But it was nice. "Me too."

i find it really interesting to think about the satanic panic possibly having an impact on daniel's murky memories of the first interview. like obviously there are other factors that would play a role in his doubting what happened (memory loss from drug use, general unreliability of memory, possible tampering by armand or louis), but i love thinking about him like. being an early and vicious critic of michelle remembers and pointing out the absurdity of the sudden boom in people having repressed memories of the supernatural (half sympathetic and half condescending at the best of times to people claiming to have unrepressed their memories) and just generally trying to fight against the moral panic through his reporting, following all the trials and such. all the while being eaten up inside that he has memories not unlike the very ones he's scornfully debunking and becoming more and more certain he could never tell another living soul about what happened, quoting his own work to himself if he starts to dwell on the memory until (helped along by the other factors) it's become so dreamlike and non literal in his head hearing the tapes is a shock.

7 (If your OC had to cosplay as a fictional character, who would they choose) for Magnetophone!
No idea how 'fictional' this question is meaning (i.e. fictional character in GENERAL or fictional character to them....?!) but I guess I'll go with fictional (to them) characters cos theres a couple.
The first one, and he's probably done this before to be honest, is Fortune 500, who looks like this (designed by @/dr9com9ge-ix):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's this pretty universally-known tailmic "show host" of a show also called Fortune 500 which is mainly a comedy show but to the tune of that one "its illegal to say" skit you know? anyway it's popular with people like Maggie so of course Maggie would cosplay it. Maybe I'll come back and like draw it or something if I can figure out what the REST OF THE OUTFIT WOULD LOOK LIKE... beyond a mask
there's the second one, the half made-up "Sun God" (half in the way that, in the source material, there IS a sun god called the sun god, but the one that people talk about is this one they made up to make fun of the religious fanatic... fans. Of this other god-related TV show. I could explain more but it's like... off-topic? for this? I think?). not that I've got any cool PROPER images or anything I just wanted to say that

fully convinced that the people harping on about how killing claire's dad came out of nowhere have never had a family member die too early. because that kind of stuff literally does happen randomly and without warning. even if they've been sick for a while, getting the actual news that they died feels like a punch. and isn't that the whole point of the show? how tragedy intersects with happiness at every point in our lives? each season finale of the show had a moment of pure joy intersecting with a moment of tragedy/animosity. this time it's the same but also different because for once the instance of tragedy directly effects the kids. they've been living in a war zone but nothing too terrible has actually happened to them, until now. ive always understood the season 1 & 2 finales as being about how, for a bunch of teenagers, nothing major that happens in the world around them is comparable to their teenage problems. but now, as they're finally becoming adults, they're faced with a very major problem that alters their lives forever.

One of my fave fanfics of all time is a YGO + CSI crossover called "Evidence of Shadows" and like I normally do not fucking care for crossover fic whatsoever, but I just love this one? If only because the CSI crew get to treat Duel Monsters like it's one of their "quirky subculture of the week" episodes. I know we've never spoken or anything but I get the impression from this blog that you might enjoy this fic, have a good afternoon.

It's been interesting getting back into both Sam/Jack and MSR at the same time, I get to compare and contrast really similar themes (secret duty, dangerous truths, aliens, government oversight, honor, loss of family, pining, devotion etc) from really different framing. The X files is a much darker show overall and Chris Carter's misogyny problem and hand of fate baby arcs are frustrating and painful, and yet the MSR fic has so much more room to be much sweeter and more openly domestic and a lot of times the stakes are lower because as much as it affects their own lives, the Syndicate and the threat of Colonization is much bigger than what they personally alone can bring about or prevent. They have guilt and repression and fear of losing each other or the work to contend with, but we're also shown that as long as they have each other they're generally okay even without the work -- I mean aimlessness and depression (and out of character writing choices) yes, but the Syndicate operations aren't that closely affected by if Mulder and Scully are in the basement office or not, so you can conjure up a wide variety of believable paths for them to be together with or without 'the files.'
Meanwhile Sam and Jack could literally be prosecuted for disobeying orders/getting involved within the same chain of command, they could get their team or the whole program taken apart thanks to that excuse in the hands of Simmons or similar, they're directly on the front lines for 8 years and they're repeatedly shown via the quantum mirror that Sam and Jack both being active members of SG1 is the only reason Earth wasn't decimated in a hostile Goa'uld invasion so they can't just resign and be together. For a second you think there's a window but then there's a new war and they make Jack everyone's boss and send Sam to a different galaxy and then put her up on a ship, and you go; Oh. So that's an endless set of circumstances, then. There's so much 'be miserably, honorably apart, serving and pining forever or the destruction of Earth will directly be your fault' baggage baked into Sam and Jack's narrative setup that you're boxed into either character-bending wish fulfillment (which is satisfying to read but hard to commit to writing ime) or the soul excoriating 'hanging on waiting for what can never be' flavor of overly believable quiet tragedy.
I'm finding I'm spending more time with the show where the skinny grey aliens with big eyes are a lot more evil and the themes are more bleak but the characters are less entirely trapped by their own best intentions 💀😭😭
